Description The Central Board of Secondary Education has introduced four English novels, as Long Reading Texts, in Classes IX and X, in order to inculcate good reading and learning habits in students, and create independent learners. The CBSE Long Reading Texts series ensures that the learner reads for the sake of pleasure and develops a reading habit that will, in turn, render him/her capable of critical thinking. The texts feature extensive pre-reading material including relevant information regarding the author the publication details that include critical reception and history of the text a plot overview character lists analyses of major characters and discussion on the themes, motifs and symbols exploited in the text. Word meanings and annotations on every page facilitate the learner's understanding of the text and help improve language skills. Unfamiliar and archaic expressions have been explained in detail while a summary and analysis section help develop the learner's understanding of characters and events in the novel. In-text questions, inferential and factual, aid in recapitulation along with a variety of text-based questions in the form of MCQs, short and long subjective and descriptive questions on plot and incidents involving interpretation and inference. Graphic organisers and character maps are given to help arrange thoughts and ideas for better understanding of plot elements and character development. There are also sample assessment questions given for revision.
