Not great literature and lots of typos/grammatical issues, but great read before you see the Broadway play Hamilton (if you haven’t read the book). Also advise listening to the soundtracks (along with reading the lyrics)

We listened to the audiobook over multiple trips -- its a very long book! I knew almost nothing about Alexander Hamilton before listening to this book and it was very enlightening to learn about his significant role in writing the Federalist papers, which interpretted the US Constitution. I did not know of his role in winning the Revolutionary War by establishing federal taxes to support an army. I did not realize that the soldiers who sacrificed to secure liberty from England were not paid for years, except possibly in land. I was unaware of his role as a spokesperson and brains behind George Washington, both as top general of the Continental army and as our first president. I was unaware of his work as an abolitionist, probably to a greater extent than other founding fathers, with the possible exception of John Adams.

Hamilton published his political opinions and personal attacks through letters written to newspapers and other publications using pseudonyms. His outspoken-ness, lack of diplomacy, and need to rebut any attack were his greatest flaws and led ultimately to his death. By the time Adams was president, partisan politics led to the establishment of separate partisan 'news' outlets for the federalists and republicans. In the context of today's politics, it is interesting to see both the way that media were used to control the narrative and the tension between federal and state dominance, ultimately leading to the first Civil War.

I've read biographies of other founding fathers and I'm realizing that they tend to present a very positive view of the main character and not-so-positive views of the founding fathers that they were associated with, so its useful to get some balance by reading them all. Thomas Jefferson, in particular, does not come out looking very well in biographies of John Adams or Hamilton. The book showed John Adams to be a very spiteful man, negligent of his duties.

Hamilton's personal life was interesting, from his humble beginnings in the Caribbean to his loyalty to his wife and family. As a young man, there were hints that he had a strong attraction to a man and not-very-strong attractions to women, and its possible the original biographical material (letters) was censored by his son. However, his friend passed away and there is no reference to this in later years or after his marriage into the Schuyler family.

In short, the book was very interesting as a window into the founding of our nation and the thoughts and life of an exceptional, insightful, and indefatigable leader.

The author should take a class in English grammar

I was hoping to get a quick overview of Hamilton's life and times without reading Chernow's extensive biography, and I must admit that it accomplished that. However, you get what you pay for. His grammar is atrocious, and he changes verb tenses in the same sentence over and over. Sometimes I couldn't figure out which person did what, because he used pronouns inappropriately. He also changed the names of the political parties without references, so it was unclear which party he was talking about. Made me wonder if the author was even partially correct in his summary. I guess I'll have to read it after all.

Hamilton the book almost as good as Hamilton the movie with less bass but less poetic license.

I listed to the audiobook as an overview to decide if I wanted to commit to reading Ron Chernow’s book on Alexander Hamilton.

I purchased this summary because I was going to see Hamilton on Broadway and didn't have the time to read the full version. It wasn't the most well written piece of literature, but sufficed in achieving my goal of getting the information that I needed.

Fantastically paints the backdrop to the founding of the nation, and the characters at play from the pen of Hamilton, and relationships whether beneficial or to his detriment he formed.

very interesting history. I like that the author leaves decisions about Hamilton to the reader when only ambiguous information is available
