Summary:
Innocent Casey Eden has nursed a crush on the handsome, arrogant Theo Peters for the last year. Her heart races, her cheeks blush, and she stammers like a school-girl, but her ability to flirt with a man for the first time in her life is exciting and liberating. After a year of dancing around each other, Casey expects for her flirtations to finally step it up to the next level, anticipating the change. And change does come, but not merely to the next level. Well beyond that, in fact. Waking up one morning to a pit full of dirt is an occurrence Casey can't explain. Finding herself immersed in a supernatural world she never knew existed is almost impossible to handle. But learning that the man of her dreams is right at the center of this new world, as is she, is unfathomable. Theo and Casey's mutual attraction is not nearly as simple as that of a school-yard crush, but instead so much more. It's a soul deep longing that's hard to resist. Unfortunately, they are sworn enemies, and any association between them could only end in heartache. Forbidden love aside, there are bigger events at play that demand attention. With the world she is familiar with quickly crumbling around her, Casey is in a race against time to find out who and what she has become. There are also those who would do anything to get to Casey. With the Earth's soothing presence calling to her and her desire for the tempting touch of fire, Casey walks a fine, dangerous line, but one thing is very clear...nothing will ever be the same again.
This book started with a bang. Who can resist the heart palpitating fear that courses through you when reading of someone buried alive. Not me. So it definitely caught my attention. That said, only a short time after that, I was really kind of confused and having a bit of trouble following what was happening. This can be construed as good and bad. Bad because, I hate not being in the know, and not understanding where the story was going kind of made me antsy. Good because, I was in Casey's shoes, living the same confusion, fear, longing, and panic. All except for the whole pit of dirt thing. Learning at the same pace as the MC often helps me to connect more, and this was the case with Casey, making me feel apart of the story, pulling me in. For the most part, I liked Casey. She was compassionate, sweet, giving, but all with a spark of something more bold and feisty. The glimpses of her spirited ire were the perfect match to her personality. I even liked her incredible naivety, to a degree. Her innocence brought with it an unconscious guilelessness, which was sweet and in matching with her personality. But the repeated reminders of her inexperience started to grate. Even with those concerns, I loved her character. The life-changing journey she's started traveling is alluring. Her connection with Theo was even more so. He was wicked hot, and not just because he's a pyrkagia. He projected a cool and aloof appearance, but was really a melting pot of emotions and feelings below the surface. I love complex heroes like that. Almost from the start, I felt the absolute rightness of Theo and Casey being destined for each other. The only snag in my happily ever after was Isadora and Theo's obvious feelings for her. I loved Sonya and only wish we could have gotten a little bit more with her. Aktor was amazing! He's got it going on for an older gentleman. Overall, a brilliant addition to the Nicola Claire library. Her incredible talent for wrapping forever love in a stimulating storyline is impossible to resist and unforgettable. This first installment has captivated me, and I cannot wait to read more. But beware...there is a cliffhanger ending. <3
