This was a very good story. I've actually read book #s 1 & 2 in this series but I missed #3. It was obvious that I'd missed a bit of the background between Tolan and Jax by skipping #3 but this story is still pretty much a standalone.
Jax is a mech whisperer, someone that has special powers over anything mechanical...and Jax's skills are better than most. Jax is a Dainaree (royalty even, 4th in line for the throne), which are nature loving people and her mech abilities weren't understood or accepted. We don't get all the details but this issue apparently made her leave her planet to go live on her own.
Tolan is a Shakien Cat and lives his life as a mercenary/space pirate/spy (etc...). He has his own code but has been known to do things that some might consider unacceptable while striving to achieve his goals of ending the Death Games and getting rid of Cor Warrung. Tolan managed to end the Death Games in a previous book but is still working on finding/capturing Cor.
When the story begins, Tolan's ship is damaged while he's fighting people working for Cor. He manages to escape them and heads to see Jax for repairs. They met previously and Tolan hasn't been able to forget her ever since so now seems the perfect time to renew their acquaintance. When he gets to her home base, it becomes apparent that her shop and the space port around it had been attacked and it ends up that Cor attacked after looking for Jax and not finding her. Tolan finds Jax in the aftermath and, once he convinces her that he's not working with Cor, they decide to work together against Cor.
Tolan and Jax head to Port Sea, a moon owned by Lucan Warrung (who thankfully doesn't get along with his brother, Cor). There, they end up involved with the couples from the previous books who have their own reasons for going after Cor. Of course there are reasons why their need has a time limit and this leads to the risky decision that Jax will be used as the bait to draw Cor in. Up to this point, Tolan and Jax have shared a strong attraction but didn't act on it but once she's in danger, Tolan kind of gets spurned into action and they come together into a mating very quickly. Despite Tolan's attempts to keep Jax from putting herself in danger, the plan does proceed and as Tolan expected, things do not go according to plan. Although Cor gets away in the end, Tolan and Jax do manage to achieve some of what they needed to and come out of everything alive and able to move on towards a HEA together.
This was a very enjoyable story. I really liked Jax as a heroine and just wished there was a bit more story to allow a bit more exploration into her background and abilities. The same holds true for Tolan...I really liked him and just wished we'd gotten a little bit of a deeper view into him. Also, there were hints that the mating bonds of both Tolan and Jax's races had additional implications we didn't see yet but those were never really gone into (and I wonder what they are...). So I did have a couple complaints but they were minor. Overall, I liked the story and characters very much and would recommend it.
