Distant Worlds #4

Stealing Jax

Rate this book
Tolan Lark is a Shakien Cat, mercenary, space pirate and occasional spy for the Alliance, but his hunt to end Cor Warrung and the death games has become all consuming, until there is nothing and no one he will not risk to finish the job. At least there is no one he would not risk until he claims a mate. Jax is a royal Dainaree who has left her planet and people behind to follow her own path. She is a powerful mech whisperer; a gift that few of her nature loving people understand or accept. It is a gift that powerful men covet, and she is about to hit the radar of the most powerful and dangerous men in the galaxy. Tolan Lark might be able to keep her safe, the question is, will she let him? This is the fourth book in the Distant Worlds Series. It can be read on it's own, but is better when read in the series order.

Kelly Lucille is the author of paranormal and fantasy romance.
She has a B.A. Degree in Creative Writing and Literature from Naropa University.
Her first book "Keeping Her" published in July of 2013.

On a more personal note- I read my first romance novel: "Shanna" by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss when I was 13 years old. I still read it every year or so just to remember how amazing a really good romance novel can make you feel.

This was a very good story. I've actually read book #s 1 & 2 in this series but I missed #3. It was obvious that I'd missed a bit of the background between Tolan and Jax by skipping #3 but this story is still pretty much a standalone.

Jax is a mech whisperer, someone that has special powers over anything mechanical...and Jax's skills are better than most. Jax is a Dainaree (royalty even, 4th in line for the throne), which are nature loving people and her mech abilities weren't understood or accepted. We don't get all the details but this issue apparently made her leave her planet to go live on her own.

Tolan is a Shakien Cat and lives his life as a mercenary/space pirate/spy (etc...). He has his own code but has been known to do things that some might consider unacceptable while striving to achieve his goals of ending the Death Games and getting rid of Cor Warrung. Tolan managed to end the Death Games in a previous book but is still working on finding/capturing Cor.

When the story begins, Tolan's ship is damaged while he's fighting people working for Cor. He manages to escape them and heads to see Jax for repairs. They met previously and Tolan hasn't been able to forget her ever since so now seems the perfect time to renew their acquaintance. When he gets to her home base, it becomes apparent that her shop and the space port around it had been attacked and it ends up that Cor attacked after looking for Jax and not finding her. Tolan finds Jax in the aftermath and, once he convinces her that he's not working with Cor, they decide to work together against Cor.

Tolan and Jax head to Port Sea, a moon owned by Lucan Warrung (who thankfully doesn't get along with his brother, Cor). There, they end up involved with the couples from the previous books who have their own reasons for going after Cor. Of course there are reasons why their need has a time limit and this leads to the risky decision that Jax will be used as the bait to draw Cor in. Up to this point, Tolan and Jax have shared a strong attraction but didn't act on it but once she's in danger, Tolan kind of gets spurned into action and they come together into a mating very quickly. Despite Tolan's attempts to keep Jax from putting herself in danger, the plan does proceed and as Tolan expected, things do not go according to plan. Although Cor gets away in the end, Tolan and Jax do manage to achieve some of what they needed to and come out of everything alive and able to move on towards a HEA together.

This was a very enjoyable story. I really liked Jax as a heroine and just wished there was a bit more story to allow a bit more exploration into her background and abilities. The same holds true for Tolan...I really liked him and just wished we'd gotten a little bit of a deeper view into him. Also, there were hints that the mating bonds of both Tolan and Jax's races had additional implications we didn't see yet but those were never really gone into (and I wonder what they are...). So I did have a couple complaints but they were minor. Overall, I liked the story and characters very much and would recommend it.

loved Tolan and Jax.

This is my favorite in hen series. I want a Tolan Lark for myself. When that Shakien goes feral he does it with finesse. This is the 4th in the distant worlds series and we’re getting closer to the end of Cor Warrung hopefully. But Tolan Lark and his mate Jax are hot and steamy and both can get a bit crazy and I loved this story. Love this series. One of my favorite rereads of all.

What should have been an exciting book fell flatter than a pancake.

The characters were flat, their chemistry was flat, the plot was thin, and overall I couldn't finish the book because it was so tepid.

It's a shame, because Tolan Lark and Jax had the skills, the will and the confidence to take on the galaxy. They deserved amazing backstories and depth of character. Sadly, they didn't have either, which made neither of them likeable.

I really liked the second book in the series, Salvage Rights, and thought the third was alright, but this one was meh. (I don't remember if I read the first in the series, but I didn't find it necessary to know what went on in order to understand or enjoy the others).

I love Kelly Lucille. I have read all her books and found most of them amazing. But I have noticed that he further into a series she writes the more muddled the story and characters become. This book was about Tolan Lark and his mate Jax. There was not really any build up towards their relationsship and I still don´t understand why they felt so much for each other..Most of the story in the book was so rushed that I couldn´t even appreciate previous characters who flew by and were as woodenly described as the leading couple. I hope these flaws are just a temporary down period.

Finally a woman with enough sass, backbone and serious craziness to take on Tolan and to make him crazy haha!!! I just LOVED it and the together, sparing and being incredibly clever and resourceful as they try to survive and hunt down Warrung.
One thing I particularly enjoyed is that all previous couples are getting closer and bonding to face their common enemy. I CAN'T wait for the next adventure!!

Hooked!

All of Kelly's books are super great reading but the "Distant Worlds" series is by far my favorite. I love how the stories flow and how they keep you interested from start to finish. You always end up wanting more. This was one of those books that when you started reading it you couldn't put it down until you finished it. Thank you Kelly for the great stories. You are an amazing writer.

Great adventure!

I love reading a great action filled book with adaptable strong female characters and intrepid strong male characters. It sparked my imagination and carried it away. The romance and hot steamy love scenes just added spice to the excellent plot. I'm looking forward to future books to see how all the little hints will be brought to fruition.

It was a decent read. I wasn’t sure what kind of heroine would suit Tolan Lark, but this one made sense. She understood him well. They enjoyed annoying each other.
I am a little annoyed that we weren’t told what it actually meant to have a Dainaree mark after the heroine kept mentioning it.

I expected more

This want as action filled as I thought it would be. I am glad I read it to further the story but I still think the first and second books were the best featuring Lucan and Nori.

Jax the mechanic

Jax is an extraordinary mechanic and more. Tolan is a mercenary whose ship is in constant need of repair since he is in the line of fire on an inordinately large number of occasions. Yup, inevitable.
