Vehicles: Hide and Sneak

Rate this book
Truck, truck, truck... turtle! Spot the imposter on each page, in this handsome collection of vehicles and look-alikes.

Behold this artful and unusual odd-one-out board book for the youngest readers, featuring a favorite theme: transportation. Contraire masterfully creates a group of images on each spread which all belong together, and then adds one that bears some degree of resemblance, but has no business joining the rest. A toaster among buses, a donkey among motorcycles, and a bird among planes are all hiding in plain sight for the delighted toddler to giddily discover! Young readers will exercise skills of categorization and concentration in finding the misplaced addition, and enjoy naming the specific vehicles as well! Features an answer key at the end.

Contraire, Bastien Vehicles: Hide and Seek. BOARD BOOK. Phaidon, 2017. $10. 9780714875163

Find the item that is a lot like the other’s but not quite. Among the airplanes you’ll find a bird. Among the sailboats you’ll see an iron. The last two-page spread shows all the “other” items you should have found on the previous pages.

Find the item that is not like the others is a fun and interactive challenge for young children. The author uses only three colors in the illustrations: pink, purple, and blue, giving the book almost a retro feel.

Pre-K – ADVISABLE. Samantha Hastings, MA, MLS.

This book is good for critical thinking, close inspection, and focus. It's also good for practicing "similar" and "different" vocabulary. It's deceptively simple with no text after the first page. However, preschoolers can get a lot out of this book, practicing descriptive words and explaining why things look different or the same. We also read the Food book in this series. Check out the others!

No words. Just pictures. As an adult I can appreciate the artwork and thought that went into this book, but I am not sure how successful it will be with a young audience.

This book is tricky! That's what makes it fun. I will keep reading it so I won't get tricked anymore.
