Jason Pickering Goddard's career as a playboy hockey star comes to a dramatic halt when he tragically damages his legs in a car accident. Swearing off women, he decides to stand in as Director of Special Events at the Pickering Foundation in the interim--knowing his celebrity status will greatly help the foundation's foster home for boys.
BUT NEITHER EXPECTED THIS KIND OF MAGIC.
A sexy witch cursed by a cheating ex-fiance, Kira Fitzgerald has closed the book on men. But a new chapter in her life opens when she's appointed as Jason's coordinator. The clash of their strong personalities ignites Jason's competitive streak and sparks an inner fire that threatens to melt the ice around his heart--a slow warm-up that weakens Kira's own defenses. And there's not a spell strong enough to save her...
Annette Blair's romantic comedies owe their beginnings to a root canal and a reluctant trip to Salem Massachusetts. Though she had once proclaimed she'd never write a contemporary, she stumbled into the serendipitous role of Accidental Witch Writer on that trip. Funny how she managed to eat her words even with an aching jaw. Magic or destiny; Annette's Bewitching Romantic Comedies became her first National Bestsellers.
Her August '07 release, SEX AND THE PSYCHIC WITCH, the first in her Triplet Witch Trilogy, hit the #1 bestselling spot for contemporary romance-humorous on Barnes & Noble. It also hit B & N's overall bestseller lists for mass market and fiction mass market and #7 for romance mass market, topping Nielsen BookScan and Borders Bestseller lists as well.
This was a strange book. It was funny at times, but not in the actual “it’s funny” way, more like, “wow, this is ridiculous and stupid” sort of way. I got what I paid for.
I felt like this was a little all over the place and had too much going on. The characters were pretty good, but the ending left me wanting more of what was in Jason's head when he finally realized what he wanted. Still it had some charm and might have been more fun to read near Halloween, but then the haunting would have left me unsatisfied.
Jason Pickering Goddard's career as a playboy ice hockey star came to a dramatic halt when a car accident left him unable to play. At the insistence of his grandmother he is the new Director of Special Events at the struggling Pickering Foundation, hoping his fame will save the foundation's boys foster home. But when Jason walks into the office to see Kira Fitzgerald with wand in hand cursing her ex-fiance, he wonders if he'll be able to survive the year with Kira as his new coordinator let alone save the foundation.
This is the second book in the Accidental Witch trilogy (after The Kitchen Witch), this time focuses on Kira who was introduced in the previous book. Kira has left Salem and moved to Rhode Island to work at the Pickering Foundation after she caught her ex-fiance cheating on her with her sister. Jason has also returned to Rhode Island with broken dreams after being forced to leave the NHL. The book is well plotted and paced, with a few twists and turns thrown in and a healthy dollop of tension from the foundation's struggles to maintain a full St. Anthony's Home for Boys.
Interestingly neither Kira nor Jason are interested in starting a relationship, and while they have sparks from the moment they met each resists them accordingly. This allows them to develop a friendship which eventually grows to include some intriguing rabbit holes. Both Kira and Jason are really well written with interesting backstories and well developed personalities.
The supporting characters are equally well written. Bessie, Jason's grandmother frequently interferes in their relationship, trying to push Jason to be happy despite his determination to return to the ice. The boys from St. Anthony's steal pretty much every scene they are in, especially the twins Travis and Zane. Travis is desperate to be adopted but won't abandon his disabled brother which leads to some heart-wrenching scenes.
Melody and Vicki also appear in this book, allowing us to catch up with Melody and Logan who are now married and expecting a baby as well as the Kitchen Witch show which Kira uses as part of the fundraising campaign. We also get to learn more about Vicki who is the lead character in the final book of the trilogy.
All in all this was another great read and I'm looking forward to The Scot, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
I love reading books by this author, why is that you ask, well it is because I have come to expect a few things that make me laugh while reading them. Those would be witty, snarky dialogue, up front sex talk with lots of innuendos and toy talk, crazy antics by the couple and the people and things around them, plus lots of magic.
This time around there was lots of the above some highlights of the book would be the hockey and witch metaphors, a whole passel of boys from an orphanage and all the craziness a mass of little kids brings, talking crows, famous athletes and a very good charity. Kira and Jason sure wanted each other from the first glance, but did their best to ignore the attraction and let all the other stuff get in the way for most of the story which lead to great fun to read.
Picked this book up on a whim...romance novels are an occassional guilty pleasure for me. Had no idea what it was about and had no expections. So, that being said, I liked it and am planning on reading the other books in the series.
Simple story, really, about guy and girl who have both given up on love...only to fall for each other. Nothing new - including the Grandmother pushing them together. Funny thing, though, she was my favorite character.
Because the title character, Kira, is involved with event planning and marketing - I could really relate to that part of her. That probably gave me more reason to be interested in the story.
This was quite the cute and entertaining story! After reading this a number of years ago, I was pleased to find that I enjoyed it now as much as I had in the past.
Kira was a cute and very quirky character! I liked how much she unsettled Jason, even from day one, to the point where he just couldn't resist her. I enjoyed how she was loyal to those she cared for and defended her beliefs.
Jason started out firm and unyielding, but I liked how he loosened up a good bit over the course of the book. I really loved how he took to Travis and Zane!
My take on it is that it is a very quick and cute read that really isn't a standalone story, but one definitely worth reading!
I was looking forward to this book because I enjoyed Kitchen Witch. I only made it about 1/3 of the way through before giving up. Because they worked together, I expected there to be some semblance of appropriate behavior in the beginning. But nope, every outfit she wore was workplace inappropriate (tube dresses and midriff baring dresses, really?). And she was stroking "Harvey" in what, 2 weeks? They hadn't even kissed. It was just...off-putting.
A bit more magic in this one, continuing with the group of friends we first met in The Kitchen Witch. Again, really light read, decent romance. Fluffy fun, but I enjoyed the first one more.
Kira Fitzgerald has sworn off men, especially jocks. Her ex-fiancé and their canceled wedding –the cost of which she’s paying for alone have definitely screwed up her life. She’s left behind her job at the museum to take another at a non-profit organization which helps to support a boys’ orphanage. She took the job because it included room and board, something she can’t afford if she’s going to pay for all the unused wedding supplies alone. She can barely face her family after her sister’s betrayal with Charlie and boy does she wish she didn’t take a vow to harm none with her magic since her sister Regan and her ex-fiancé Charlie certainly harmed her. The new job seems like a life saver, that is until she meets her new boss, Bessie’s grandson, injured NHL Hockey Wizard Jason Pickering Goddard. Deemed America’s best kisser Jason is like sex in a bottle and everything Kira isn’t looking for. Jason took the job because his grandmother guilted him into it, all he wants is to be back on the ice even though most of the doctors are telling him it won’t happen. Despite this, he’s determined to bring money back into the foundation and make his grandmother proud. Unfortunately he’s sure his grandmother’s meddling extends beyond just the job, and includes some match making with the sex witch in the office next door. Since a woman’s carelessness is what caused his career ending injury and the rest continue to treat him like a piece of meat due to his reality show fame, the last thing he wants is a woman in his life. With the attraction sparking between them and the need to work together for the foundation’s benefit neither of them seems able to resist the other. Throw in a group of orphan boys, a haunted house and a meddling grandmother and who knows what will happen between them. But what happens when his six months are up and Jason returns to Hockey? Will Kira be betrayed again? Can she risk her heart and does she even want to?
So after I read the Kitchen Witch earlier this year I mentioned I wouldn’t be passing up titles by Annette Blair even though she didn’t write in my preferred genre. I’ve been putting off reading the next in the Accidental Witch Trilogy until I caught up more on the books I promised to read, however last night I caved and received another lovely journey into Blair’s Accidental Witch world. As with the first novel this is a well written, close third person contemporary romance. The main character is supposed to be a witch and she does have wand and recite a few spells but beyond that it doesn’t really have much of a paranormal aspect to it. You really aren’t sure if her spells actually work or not or if the results are just coincidence. She claims not to be Wiccan but rather a solitary white witch, but since she doesn’t have the oomph of your average paranormal witch she comes across more like a Wiccan is usually portrayed. For a romance the book has a fairly fast pace and includes some humor, though not to the extent of its predecessor. There are a couple freaky moments in the novel which allude to the idea of ghosts or that Kira does in fact has some sort of power which attracts crows to her. As with most contemporaries the book relies less on the plot to move it forward and more on the characters themselves. However she includes richly developed characters and though the book includes a lot of foreplay as well as a little sex this is not relied upon in any way to move the book forward. There were a couple of things I found a little hard to believe in the book. The first being that Kira is supposed to be one of those girls that has never had a partner who can “bring her to her happy place” sexually. That I can buy into very easily. However, during one of their not quite sex scenes Jason brings here there just from playing with her breasts. If she’s difficult to bring to orgasm the chances of that happening are quite slim. The other thing has to do with breaking a contract with what seems like relative ease and sounds highly unlikely. But I’m not really going to go into details on that one because it would spoil the surprise.
Like most romances you know from the first chapter or two who is ending up with who, that’s inevitable, the important part of the book, what makes or breaks it is not knowing who ends up together – it’s the journey and the characters who join you that decide if the novel is worth reading. The journey of this novel is highly entertaining and the characters are memorable so I feel the goal was well met. I get the impression with these books that the author is attempting to foray into paranormal romance because each book in the series employs just a little more odd occurrences than the last so I’m really looking forward to see where she goes with the finally trilogy novel. The lighthearted tone of the book makes it a joy to read and overall a very quick novel to read.
Like I mentioned above Blair has a talent for creating a well developed and likeable character. In this novel we see small cameo appearances from previous series characters like Melody, Vickie and Logan, but the focus of the book is on Kira and Jason, the couple of this romance. We also meet Jason’s grandmother and some of Kira’s family and a group of orphans in a boys home. Of the new secondary character introductions, the only ones really well developed are Jason’s grandmother Bessie and the twin Travis and Zane from the boys’ home. Bessie is more developed than the boys, but she also appears in more scenes than the boys so it’s understandable. The main characters are easy to relate to and fun to follow in this book. Kira is as I mentioned a white witch who’s been badly burned. She’s introduced in the novel while burning her wedding invitations and stopping herself from doing a spell to whither her ex-fiance’s penis. You quickly learn that the wedding was canceled after she found her jock fiancé Charlie in bed with her sister Reagan. She also pronounces how much she hates jocks just as her new boss, NHL Hockey Icon, the Ice Wolf, walks into the room. Jason, the Ice Wolf is off the ice while his knee injury, caused by a car accident heals. Most doctors say he won’t return to hockey, but he isn’t ready to give up on his dreams just yet. As it was a woman who totaled the car and put his career on hiatus, the last thing he wants is to become involved with another. Both leads have sworn off the opposite sex, but that doesn’t stop them from being physically attracted to the other one. Kira’s main issues is this book is getting past the betrayal of her previous relationship and learning to trust again. Jason has to learn to let others in. He compares himself to his cheating grandfather who hurt the grandmother that he adores enough to have taken the job as the head of fundraising at her charity institution. He recently started in a reality show naming him America’s best kisser in which he was really made to feel like a piece of meat and in general distrusts women as well as himself. The book portrays their flaws, weakness and strength as the couple comes together. The chemistry is obvious and the heat between them is intense. They were enjoyable to read about and watch interact during the book.
Overall, no it’s probably not a book I’d read twice because while I’ll enjoy a single journey through the pages there’s not enough subplot wise going on to keep my attention. However I would still highly recommend it for an initial read and I think readers of contemporary romance will love the book. If you enjoy romance and you’re looking for a fun getaway in a book, Blair’s books are not ones to be missed.
I’ve been waiting for this book to arrive on my doorstep for ages! I just loved The Kitchen Witch so much, and I couldn’t wait to read about one of her friends… I really wasn’t disappointed. So much so that I stayed up all night finishing this. Unable to put it down… I suppose having a good book by your side is one moment in which insomnia can actually work for you…
Kira only makes a brief appearance in The Kitchen Witch, but it’s enough that you are completely drawn in and want only what’s best for her. She has a great vulnerability and innocence covered in this incredibly tough outer layer. The fact that she’s been quite seriously burnt in the past, actually made me think of my own sister, which just made me want to hug her and find her a good man all the more… which of course happens. Because this is a romance. And it’s cute and why would you have a romance without a great, hunky lead to partner with the vulnerable, independent woman?
Normally I want to punch people in romances because of their incredibly stupid decisions. The vast majority of the time, the reason that they can’t work is because one of them is just epically dumb. Not so much with this story, don’t get me wrong, there were some silly decisions made… but they came from a place that I could completely understand and relate to. So much less frustrating when you can truly understand the characters’ flaws and insecurities… even if they’re still a little dumb.
This is one of those perfect books for when you’re feeling a little overwhelmed, overworked and just plain stressed. It’s not overly intense, but there is enough happening that you are fascinated by what will happen next. You know that eventually the leads will end up together, so you’re not upset by that. But there’s enough concern that you want to make sure this isn’t the one romance in which there is no happily ever after… my only actual complaint about this book is that now it’s over and I have to return to the real world…
Jason Pickering Goddard's hockey career ended when he injured his knee in a car accident, and his grandmother takes the opportunity to recruit him as the Director of Special Events for their family foundation. The foundation is losing money, and his celebrity status as a playboy hockey player will help the foundation raise money and continue to support the foundation's foster home for young boys. Once at the foundation, Jason meets Kira Fitzergald, a sexy witch cursing her cheating ex-fiance. Because of their past, Kira swore off men, and Jason swore off women. But will that be enough to stop the magic between them? This is the second book in the Accidental Witch series and is just as sweet. The plot is incredibly simple, and there are absolutely no surprises in the story, but it is so sweet that I still enjoyed the read. I really loved the involvement of the boys from the foster home, especially the tiny twin boys that attach themselves to Jason and Kira throughout the story. Also, the witchy elements and the setting in ancient mansions made it a fun, lighthearted October read!
Wow! “My Favorite Witch” is definitely an adult read! I laughed, frowned and covered my teary eyes as Kira and Jason battled personal demons, magic and each other to save St. Anthony’s Home for Boys and themselves. What a romantic and at times hysterically funny read! I loved the setting and characters especially Bessie, Travis and Zane (these three really touched my heart)! The interactions are sharp and witty…I wish I could be that quick on the uptake. Annette Blair is now on my list of favorite authors! If you love hot witchy romance with lots of laughter this is the book for you!
i wasn’t a fan of this book at all. first off the fact she’s a witch makes no sense. it’s a perfectly normal storyline and then she just casually whips out her wand here and there. i’m all for romance books so the story line of the two main characters was decently good. there was never a time where i was like “wow wasn’t expecting that.” the last chapter also seemed super scrunched together. so many things happened at once. happy ending though, i loved the little family they ended up to be, but i saw it coming as soon as the characters were introduced.
I enjoyed the characters very much but the story was a bit lacking. It focused too much on sex or "almost sex" than anything else. I wish it would've focused more on the main characters relationships with the boys (twins) from the home and maybe their relationships with their families. They both had issues that were never really delved into or worked out much.
Picked it up at a book sale for $0.50. Okay read. I think the author had too much going on. I had hoped there would have been more magic as the main character was a witch. Definitely a few lost opportunities with storylines.
Synopsis:"New from the author of the surprise hit "The Kitchen Witch" "The Kitchen Witch" author Annette Blair serves up a charming tale of a beautiful witch--cursed by her ex-boyfriend--who is appointed to work with a former hockey star, the one man who can melt the ice around her heart."
My Review: It has been a couple of years since I read the Kitchen Witch but I do recall really enjoying it. This one unfortunately didn't hit just right for me. I enjoyed some of the characters and I loved the setting and idea of the story, saving a floundering non-profit and little boys home. What set things off for me on the wrong foot was the beginning started out at such an odd point I felt like I was totally missing something. It went down hill from there with an inconsistency in the characters, and the awkward and jarring conversations between them. One minute they were flirting the next feuding and totally off dating, which can be entertaining but this just was too sudden. I do hope that reading the next book on the tail of this one will maybe make the final book in the trilogy a little smoother.
The romance between Kira and Jason is cute with lots of witty repartee and double entendres (many involving hockey sticks). Overall, this was a light, amusing, and cute story. That being said, I did have some real problems with this book... Lets see, there is a witch who carries her wand everywhere and actively encourages the waving of the wand and the power being in the wand, a lot of emphasis on what said witch is wearing, a huge lead up to the actual sex scene (lots of foreplay) which didn't pay off at all and left me thinking "that's it?", a secondary story about haunted mansions and talking crows which never quite fit the rest of the story and an incredibly predictable ending. And let's not forget the [...] named "Harvey" who "weeps" at certain moments... Oh, and did I mention the orphans in the orphanage run by nuns? Give me a break - adorable five year old twins in an orphanage would be adopted in five seconds. I'm not saying don't read this book - read it, but know that it is very very sugary and in the end, fairly unsatisfying.
Just finished this one this morning. I liked it a lot better than The Kitchen Witch. As a character, Kira is a lot more interesting than Melody, and Kira's counterpart Jason, more interesting than Melody's Logan.
Like the previous book, there was a lot of back and forth with the main characters trying to deny their feelings for each other, but unlike in the first, the reasons for Kira and Jason's denial of their feelings was more believable, and even understandable, than Melody and Logan's were. And they were both a lot less uptight too, which I appreciated.
So My Favorite Witch left me with less of a "Gimme a break!" attitude than The Kitchen Witch did. Overall, I found it an amusing story, which had me chuckling at times and held my interest. Despite the fact that it was still purely a romance, and despite the title, didn't really contain any supernatural element, Kira's Witchy ways were more a part of the story this time around than Melody's were in the previous book.
My Favorite Witch is book two in the Accidental Witch Trilogy by Annette Blair. I really enjoyed this book and this series, so far. Annette Blair's writing is fun, light, and sexy. This story is about Kira, Melody's witch friend, and Jason, an NHL Hockey Player. Jason injured his leg in an accident and is off the ice for another six months. His grandmother, Bessie, has coerced him into working as the director for his family's foundation, to help raise awareness and money for the foundation and children of St Anthony's. The events coordinator is Kira, and not only are they working closely together, but they're sharing a house, too. The story is a lot of fun and like the first book, it had me crying my eyes out and lusting of the male hottie. Kira was my least favourite character in book one, but in book two, we get to know more about her. I really loved these two and their adorable family. Keep 'em coming Annette!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This is first of all, an adult romance novel. There are vivid love scenes that add to the story but are not for teenagers and below.
I love this trilogy of romances because of the paranormal twist. We are talking about good witches and love situations.
A romance is predictable. It introduces the couple normally after they have each had disappointments in the love area of their lives. Then, the couple slowly are drawn to each other and viola! Love match!
In this novel we have a hockey player, who is a player in the fuller sense of the term, and a cheated upon witch. They both are quitting 'love' for good. Both are truly damaged. They find each other and through a heart-tugging, laugh filled story line, find true love.
This novel had an underlying tale about children needing adoption. It reminds you about the plights of lives in areas we too often do not think about. It was tastefully and lovingly related to us.
Annette Blair's books are dependable for fun, quirky, likeable characters, and romantic plots with just enough angst to keep you reading to find out how the hero and heroine finally get together.
In this outing our Favourite Witch, Kira, has just dumped her jock fiance after catching him in bed with her sister! Yikes!
She then is forced to work with another jock, Jason, who is the grandson of Kira's boss, a little old lady who, while appearing sweet and doddery, has a will of iron and schemes worthy of Machiavelli...and her schemes include getting Kira and Jason together.
As they are forced to work together on "Gram's" charitable foundation activities, the proverbial sparks fly.
As with all Blair's books, this is fun and frothy and a quick and easy read with a bit of magic thrown in.
