The news they’re after isn’t fake—it’s deadly

For top security expert Parker Lawton, the anonymous threat is explosive. Return the gold stolen during his intelligence unit’s last Iraq mission—or they’ll each be hunted down. And when one of his men is killed just before meeting investigative reporter Rebecca Wallace, he must take her under his “protection.” But her persistence in getting the real story is even more dangerous—and irresistible.

For a dashing war hero, Parker is the most guilty-acting innocent man Becca has ever seen. Still, working with him is the only way to stay ahead of a ruthless enemy. A more appropriate title for this pile of absolute shit would be Stockholm Syndrome Hero or Rape Fantasy Hero, because otherwise there's not a fucking thing Parker Lawton does that could ever justify the use of the word "hero". I hated him.

This is the worst book I've ever read. Ever. Hands down winner of that dubious title. This garbage is absolutely worthless. Books like this justify the idea of being able to give negative star ratings.

By page 20, when "hero" Parker Lawton had broken into heroine Becca Wallace's apartment and gone through all her emails, I already had a fair inkling that this would be a 1 star book. After all, Debra Webb and Regan Black's collaborations have been largely awful. (I haven't read individual Regan Black books, but I have read other books by Debra Webb and enjoyed them).

But it got so, so, so, so much worse from there.

Parker was part of a team in Iraq that has been accused of stealing gold from a family, and he's now being blackmailed with the bogus story. Rebecca "Becca" Wallace is a journalist who has received communication from the same accuser, obviously in the hope of exposing him. At some gala, she is (inexplicably) attacked, and Parker "rescues" her.

That is, he spirits her away to a safe room and holds her there AGAINST HER WILL, so he can find out who her "source" is and protect his name from being besmirched. He claims it's for her own safety, but that's total bullshit. There are a MILLION other ways he could have gone about this. He's a COWARDLY ABUSER. His actions are more at home in one of the numerous thrillers we get these days of husbands abusing the crap out of their wives.

Becca is trapped in a room for two days where she cries, screams, considers desperate actions to escape, fears rape and murder, and numerous other atrocious things. And it's the "HERO" making her feel this way! Parker knows that what he is doing is wrong, and he just keeps on doing it anyway! In real life, this pathetic coward would end up in jail!

Anyway, after two days, Parker reveals himself and it doesn't take long for Becca to decide he's totally cool and hot and she's in love with him. I have two words: STOCKHOLM SYNDROME. It just turned my stomach every single page with her basically begging him to let her tag along and solve the "mystery".

And there is no mystery, folks. We don't even get given an explanation as to why the villain is doing what they're doing! Although to be honest, anybody who wants to put a bullet between the eyes of Parker Lawton is probably doing the world a favour!

This was offensive, badly written garbage. It's rare that a book could actually offend me, but this one did. There was nothing romantic about the hero holding the heroine hostage against her will in any, way, shape or form. I'm stunned that not one, but two, female authors could actually ever think this was okay. Then again, a lot of women have given this 4 stars! So maybe I'm missing something? But this was just terrible. Terrible, terrible, terrible. Disgusting romance, no suspense, no real plot. Did I say how terrible it was? It's really sad that trees have to die so that garbage like this can see the light of day.

Good book with exciting suspense. Rebecca received an email with an anonymous tip about stolen Iraqi gold. As the producer of an investigative news show, she is intrigued, but she is also cautious. She won't broadcast a report until she is certain she has all the facts, so she and one of her reporters begin investigating the people listed in the email. One of those people is Parker, who raises a couple of red flags in Rebecca's mind.

Parker recently received a blackmail letter, threatening to kill him and his former teammates if the blackmailer isn't paid one million dollars. As Parker begins his investigation into who could be behind the letter, he discovers that he and his teammates are being contacted by reporters. He's certain that there is some connection, but he can't get Rebecca to return his calls.

The first meeting between Becca and Parker was intense. She's getting ready for a date, but her mind is busy going over what she has learned so far. She knows she has been getting calls from Parker, but she won't talk to him until she has more information about him. What she didn't expect was to have him show up at her door. Parker is quite aggressive in his attempt to get Becca to give up her source in the investigation, but she won't cooperate. Underneath the antagonism between them is also a thread of attraction.

When Parker gets a call from the police that his friend and former teammate, Theo, has been murdered on his way to talk to a reporter, he realizes that there is a link between Becca's investigation and the blackmail letter. He follows Becca to the gala, intending to confront her again. Instead, he arrives just in time to see her get drugged and prevent her from being kidnapped. Determined to both protect her and get answers, he takes her to his safe room.

This is where things got a little iffy for me. I liked Parker's protectiveness and his determination to get to the bottom of what was happening. What I didn't care for was the way he kept Becca a prisoner. She was understandably scared by his actions, especially when he restrained her. He knew what he was doing was wrong, but he kept doing it anyway. I felt that if he had simply told her what had happened at the gala and about the blackmail letter, from the beginning much of the conflict between them could have been avoided. I liked Becca's ability to remain calm and focused while she was trapped in the safe room. She uses the time to think about what has happened and begins to sort through her memories of that night. It doesn't take her long to figure out that Parker is her captor. I enjoyed her ingenuity as she made her escape plans. That confrontation was fun to see, especially Parker's admiration of her cleverness. It also finally brought them face to face and forced Parker to tell her what was going on.

Parker is a man who is accustomed to working alone. He doesn't like to ask for help, especially when he believes it will put someone else in danger. He's dealing with a lot of guilt over Theo's death and the attack on another teammate. Becca's refusal to stay out of it frustrates him to no end because he wants her to be safe. The action continues to intensify as Parker and Becca are faced with exploding cars, people following them and shooting at them. I loved how it was Becca that came up with the idea to draw the blackmailer out. The final confrontation was intense with the blackmailer determined to bring Parker down. I loved Becca's determination to protect Parker and her part in stopping the blackmailer. I also enjoyed seeing how Parker's friends Rush and Sam provided the help that Parker needed, even when he was too stubborn to ask for it.

The attraction between Becca and Parker was undeniable. Becca was not happy about it when that attraction would flare up during the time Parker had her confined in the safe room, but she couldn't stop thinking about him. The attraction between them continued to build as they worked together. Once they got past the whole safe room issue, the relationship between them developed quickly. I did like seeing how they were able to talk about their pasts with each other and open up about the feelings from those events. Their realizations of the depth of their feelings happened quickly. I liked the hint of vulnerability that Parker showed at the end.

Debra Webb and Regan Black are two of my favorite authors, so I was glad to see the next installment in the Gray Box Series, Reluctant Hero.

I was wondering what was going to happen to Parker Lawton, security expert and major investor in Gray Box. Paring him with the producer of an investigative reality show, Rebecca Wallace, who had also spent time in the Middle East around the same time Parker was there in the military made for interesting character and relationship development.

Who is hunting Parker, his unit, and Rebecca? This story about unforeseen consequences of serving and investigating in the Middle East is a timely topic.

Kudos to Debra Webb and Regan Black for another well-done novel!

I don't know what to rate this book.
If this would have been in the real world then the hero would have been in prison.
They have a war of words and then later he rescues the heroine and kidnaps her.(She is unconscious at that time). Now for 2 days she is his captive and only at the later stages she doubts its him.
But after 2 days he finally frees her and the same day they are attacked and later they kiss.
Um. WHAT?!
Stockholm syndrome anyone..?
And yeah they are even about to have sex before they are interrupted.
Next day she realizes that she loves him.
FACEPALM.
I tried moving from this aspect but it was really difficult. Like Really difficult.

Reluctant Hero is the latest collaboration between Debra Webb and Regan Black. It is also the third book in the “Gray Box” series. Parker and Becca are chasing the same story: he’s looking at it based on an attempted blackmail; she’s looking at it based on an anonymous tip. Together they will find they story is much bigger than both of them. I really wanted them to start working together a whole lot sooner. The instant chemistry felt a little forced; especially after he stashed her in a safe room for two days. Readers of this series will enjoy the interaction with the previous heroes and heroines. All in all, a solid installment in the series.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this novel.

Becca Wallace, former actress and now producer of an investigative TV programme, recently received a tip on a scandal involving the US Army and 6 former soldiers. She was on her way to a gala, when she got an email, which she had no time to read. Parker Lawton, now a civilian security expert, is one of those six soldiers. A blackmail note detained him from arriving on time at the same gala: someone from the Middle East implies that he and his five former teammates have stolen one million dollars in gold, and the nameless villain threatens to kill them one by one if the gold or the money is not restored within a few days. Parker has also heard that Becca is working on a TV show about the issue, and when Parker finally makes it to the gala, it’s to see Becca nearly abducted by a man. Parker rushes in to rescue her; she has been drugged, so he takes her to one of his homes to make sure she is safe, and then locks her up in the safe room for two days!

With that “little” error of judgement on Parker’s part, I knew I would have problems with the romance. Mind you, Becca is a fabulous heroine: through her ordeal, she keeps a cool head, doesn’t do anything stupid; she earned my respect whereas for Parker, well… He realised early on it was a bad decision; he knows what he did/is doing is stupid, but he cannot find a way to straighten things out elegantly. He keeps postponing talking to her like a reasonable human being; it was distasteful, and unnecessary, and I found this inexcusable and inconsiderate. Had he simply explained calmly to Becca what had happened at the gala, he could have enlisted her help right from the start, and everything would have been perfect. This is really what the problem is with RELUCTANT HERO. Other than that, it’s a terrific caper, fast-paced, with plenty of fab technical details, a lot of action, and the cooperation of Parker’s friends, Sam and Rush, was great, as were the writing and dialogues. What’s even worse in a way, considering Parker’s extremely questionable actions, is that Becca and Parker made an excellent team trying to elucidate the enigma. All the unpleasantness could have been avoided so easily, and the romance might have worked, because I felt the romance was extremely rushed even without taking into account Becca being held against her will. If my rating isn’t lower, it’s because the suspense angle is really fantastic.

4 1/2 STARS!

When danger strikes, will he be able to keep her safe as things are falling apart around them? This story is riddled with fast-paced intrigue that keeps our attention and has us anticipating havoc at every corner. The romance is light, but the story line is exciting enough to hold our attention until the end. Really enjoyed Parker & Becca!

Security expert Parker Lawton isn't sure what to make of correspondence he receives threatening to expose he and his former Army team in regards to an important mission they were on in Iraq. He sets out to get answers as to who is up to no good, but is quickly thwarted when one of his men winds up dead, and he realizes he's not the only one looking into the matter.

Investigating journalism producer Rebecca Wallace is extremely irritated with Parker when he makes it impossible for her to do her work in chasing down answers on this case. When bad guys keep popping up around them, they are destined to remain in danger until they put their minds and their connections together to bring this realm of terror to an end ... their sizzling attraction may get in their way of keeping their mind in the game though!

I was given a free copy of this book by the authors and publishers in exchange for my honest review.

I don’t usually really Harlequin Intrigue, but I delved into this book and was happy to have had the opportunity to read it. The plot grabbed me from the beginning, with a powerful woman who is the producer of a TV show and who is determined to uncover the truth about some American soldiers who may have stolen gold in Iran. She received an anonymous email and jumps into an investigation, not knowing that she is putting herself into danger. Parker Lawton, however, does know that she is in danger just like the other soldiers who were with him on the mission and he is absolutely determined to keep her safe at all costs. There the action, romance and suspense begin, with a relationship that starts with total distrust. This was a good book with believable characters and lots of action. Enjoyable and quick read!

A couple of years back, I kept passing by dozens of copies of this book while out grocery-shopping and my curiosity finally got the better of me, so I purchased it, took it home...and promptly sat it on my shelf with the decision that I would wait to read it when I was in the mood for the type of story it was.

Well, I just finished reading it...and it only took close to a month to finish. I'm not surprised by the ultra-fast-pacing or the Stockholm Syndrome romance, really, but ultimately this book was just very underwhelming. I feel like I was promised something genuinely intriguing and all I ended up getting was a novel that started decently but was so half-baked it couldn't save itself.

I'm still glad to cross this off my TBR, don't get that wrong, but I do intend to possibly sell this back to a secondhand bookstore or see if I can get someone to take it off my hands at a garage sale this fall.

Thank you Debra Webb for the ARC of Reluctant Hero by Debra Webb and Regan Black that I read and reviewed.
I enjoyed the storyline that Reluctant Hero was written around. I also loved the chemistry between Parker and Becca that made the story even more interesting. If you are looking for a face paced book with a lot of intrigue and some hot romance by two of the best romantic suspense authors out there Reluctant Hero is the book for you.
In this romantic suspense there is murder, an anonymous tip of stolen gold by a war hero, an attempted kidnapping and all kinds of crazy things. Did I mention during all this a security expert and investigative reporter are the ones tied into this whole mess and somehow manage to set off sparks off each other?
I am giving Reluctant Hero five out of five stars.

I just knew I should have started this book earlier than I did. Whenever Debra and Regan write a book together, it is always one you just know, once you start it, there is no stopping reading til it's done. This one has a lot of suspense, some mystery, things blown up and a little bit of romance thrown in to it. I will not give spoilers but I will say if this book is not on your list to buy, you sure are going to miss out. Go find it, you can thank me later.

I've read a few other joint books written jointly by Debra Webb and Regan Black, but I don't believe I've read anything else from this series. This story certainly stands alone, but I plan on picking up the first 2 books because I enjoyed this one so much! There is a lot of mystery, suspense, and intrigue right from page 1. The plot felt unique, and I liked the different angles of the story. The romance was fun, but it did move a little fast at the end. Overall, an enjoyable, quick story!

Reluctant Hero is full of action, romance, and suspense. When reporter Rebecca gets a tip and follows the lead, she's headed straight for trouble. Parker tried to protect her, and the sparks fly between them. Will they find more than the answers they are looking for? I really enjoyed this story, and I definitely recommend it.

A great read by Debra Webb and Regan Black. Once you pick it up you will not be able to put it down.
While this book is a part of a series, it can be read as a stand alone book. However I would recommend reading them all. Highly recommend.

I have not read the first 2 in this Grey Box series and I was not lost. I thoroughly enjoy suspense, military, law and this delivered. I personally would have preferred Becca and Parker started collabrating sooner. Enjoyable read.

I liked Reluctant Hero, a Harlequin Intrigue book, because it was a romantic suspense. It had interesting characters and was entertaining. (One thing I didn't like was the fact that the main character was described as a red head with freckles but on the cover she had long black hair.)
