After the death of his wife, and the incarceration of his sister in a nursing home, 83 year old Charles Fenemore decides he would prefer to meet his fate head-on, purchases a boat, and sets out single-handed across the Atlantic towards the West Indies - or, if you prefer, into the Sunset. The only people he confides in are his son, Jonathan, and a golfing buddy. Encountering some vile weather, his journey comes to the attention of a journalist, in a dead-end job on the local rag, who senses there is more to his trip than just a late yen for adventure. Charles reaches the West Indies, and meets up with a young female, stranded in a remote Creek in Antigua. As they are about to island hop, the girl's ex-partner turns up, and things start to turn nasty. The whole purpose of Charles trip is turned on its head, and Charles decides to return home. Despite the morbid intentions of Charles, both Jonathan, and Andrew, the journalist, who sets off to Antigua to meet Charles and get some 'meat' for his story, find his intentions and the manner he has set about to achieve them, to be life enhancing.
