Being a good parent is a skill that is acquired over time, one that requires constantly adapting to the rapidly changing times. In today’s world, where academics, extra-curricular activities and distractions in the shape of numerous gadgets make heavy demands on children’s time, it is tough to communicate with them. Dr Anupam Sibal, through his experience as father, paediatrician and Group Medical Director of Apollo Hospitals Group, outlines his approach to effectively getting through to children and mastering the art of parenthood. Focusing on the different values and qualities that make a good person, Dr Sibal has a hands-on approach to instil each of these in a child. Exploring the crux of parenting, this book asks and answers whether your child is ready to face the world.
The book is short and concise and gives a good perspective for new parents. As a new parent who's kids are starting to go to school, I would recommend this book. The book has a lot of examples but the central message of developing skills beyond academics do help in parenting. It is a quick read and can be finished in one sitting, you can start from any chapter and you will not lose the message.
I have read it when my daughter is only one year old. I suggest this book to all parents and to read it not once but atleast twice or thrice. Such a simple book, easy to read and so many examples to follow. Kudos to the writer on writing such a complex book with simple words.
Really a very nice book. The author has a very different perspective of going about parenting. The 18 virtues are very well explained with beautiful examples. I feel it should be there in reading list of every parent... Thank you Dr Sibal...
It is a good book. No doubt at all. But I feel that the content is little less than the expected level. Instead of guiding the parents, it motivates them by giving so many examples.
an easy read... and while the values that it talks of are no different from what you will find in any book on values - be it the social values to be inculcated in children (as captured in age old Panchtantra tales or the Aesop fables) or the business values that are key to leadership and excellence - the narrative is simple and full of stories which keeps it light and interesting...
but I found that adding examples of world personalities and bringing their life incidents in context (whenever done) makes it more easier to relate to... makes it seem achievable in the real world and not just a fantasy...
Note: for anyone to appreciate these personalities or the values that are behind their achievements (either for their own benefit or to share the stories with others), it would require deeper study... the couple of lines referenced to in the narrative are not enough for full context (unless you are already aware of their biographies) and the text just works as a reference index to lookup for details....
The book can be read in any random order and that gives you flexibility to pick a value that u feel like for the day... also the chapters are a few pages and can be read during stolen moments from a typical busy day!
Excellent book. Looking for a book as a friend, philosopher and a guide? Grab and read this book. Your child will be grateful to you. In the process, you too will learn the virtue of being humble.
Awesome book by the author. This doesn't fall in parenting category , once you go through the book even you'll learn something. Even the hindi edition for this one is out. A MUST READ FOR EVERYONE.
