Love is Messy #4

Battle Scars

Rate this book
They say time heals all wounds, but sometimes it does just the opposite. The pain festers, seeping deep into your heart. By the time you’ve realized what happened, it’s too late and you’re left with a scar that will never go away.

I’ve spent the last year hiding my scars, running from the man who gave them to me. What I thought was love turned out to be a nightmare that won’t end, even though I forced myself awake. Love isn’t real. Love only leads to heartache.

And then I met him, the epitome of tall, dark and handsome. Throw in some sexy confidence and a panty-melting grin, and you have the recipe for a broken heart. Only, my heart is becoming full again, being put back together piece by piece the more time we spend together.

I’ve been down this road before and know it’ll end in two ways: we’ll ride off in the sunset together and live happily ever after, or we’ll crash and burn so hard neither will survive the wreckage.

I want to be hopeful, but history is damned to repeat itself. And I have the scars to prove it.

Battle Scars is the fantastic conclusion of Ana and Cole’s love story. It picked up right where Bad Things ended. It had been a while since I read that book, but I still remember many things about it. I couldn’t wait to start this book. I really loved this novel and their whole love story actually!

In Bad Things, I got to know Ana and Cole and I read how they grew close to each other. They really liked each other and they liked spending time together (inside and outside the bedroom). The falling in love happens in this book and it was beautiful to read. They slowly realized that and they wanted to be together forever. It had been a long time since the both of them experienced those feelings. Ana and Cole never thought they would be in love again. They both deserve love and each other.

Ana and Cole were just like I remembered them. Ana is creative, talented, kind and loving. She has some trust issues and insecurities, but Cole proofs that he’s trustworthy. He’s always there for her. Cole is ambitious, smart, passionate, caring and protective.

There was a little bit of suspense. Ana’s past is back to haunt her. She will tell Cole about it, because she trusts him. Cole will do anything to protect his Ana. I was constantly wondering was the (evil) man’s plan was and what he could do next. It was solved maybe a little too quickly near the end. I expected something bigger or more dramatic. The book did end with a beautiful epilogue.

The second instalment in the Love Is Messy Duet called Battle Scars features Cole and Ana’s story is blazing hot and full of suspense and tons of passion. It picks up where book 1 left off- Ana was asleep in Cole's bed while he went out for coffee, donuts and a bouquet of Gerbera daisies. When he returns there is a strange man on his porch whom he had seen around hanging around and sort of following him. He wanted Cole to do something for him and Cole told him to call his office. It was actually Steven, Ana's psycho crazy stalker ex-boyfriend. This is when Ana was forced to come clean about her past . Ana isn’t proud about her ex. He did some damage to her – physically and emotionally. He left her unable to truly trust anyone fully anymore. Yet when she met Cole, that seemed to all change because when he holds her and she is around him, she finally feels safe . Only thing is Cole is up for t his promotion and he chooses to do certain things that put his relationship with Ana at risk. Cole knows he is totally in the wrong but he is irrational at this moment because he wants this top level job and we get to see Cole not at his best while we see him trying to struggle to keep Ana happy and all to himself . Ana is blissfully unaware while I think they make such a perfect couple but this picture is only for a short time. This book doesn’t have as many huge sex scenes but it is deep on the emotional level and deals with some sensitive issues which made this just as good as book 1 and I loved it as much.
Happiness is short lived. Trust can be easily broken while secrets can destroy all . Just remember villains can and will find you no matter how safe you think you are. Will Ana be strong enough to break free and will Cole stand beside her or will be absent?
I thought I was going to end up totally hating Cole yet I remember to err is human and that is what he was doing and what I will say is he totally redeemed himself. This is a series you do not want to miss. Cole and Ana’s love story is emotional and beautiful.

Ana and Cole continue their intense relationship in "Battle Scars," the second part in the Love is Messy Duet by Emily Goodwin . The last time we saw them, Ana was asleep in Cole's bed while he went out for coffee, donuts and a bouquet of Gerbera daisies. Upon his return, he saw a strange guy on his porch who he had also seen at the diner. He asked Cole if he would read his manuscript and Cole told him to call his office. It was actually Steven, Ana's crazy stalker ex-boyfriend. He had followed her to NYC from Kentucky after getting out of jail.
Ana was forced to tell Cole about Steven physically abusing her, which resulted in his arrest and imprisonment. She decides to file a police report, but she fears that it will do no good. She hates being afraid and is concerned that Steven might come after Cole and his family.
Cole is still being considered for the publisher position and desperately wants it. He hasn't told Ana about the promotion and he also continues to keep their relationship a secret from his co-workers. He knows in his heart that lying to her is wrong, but he has no choice.
Will Cole tell Ana the truth or will his lies ruin any chance they have for happiness? Can Ana stop living in fear and open her heart to a future with Cole?
"Battle Scars" is sensual and suspenseful, with characters and situations that everyone can relate to. Cole and Ana were destined to be together from the moment they met and this was the perfect ending to their journey

They each have some soul searching to do to make sure being with each other's is worth the risk of loosing it ALL .. them selves !!

Loved Loved this second series !! The twist and turns that you would never expect in this installment will have you yelling at the pages !!

I was so looking forward to Cole and Ana's HEA and while I enjoyed the relationship building for this couple, I felt like the build up with Steven was a non-event. And for something that was such a huge part of this story, it took away from my overall feelings for the book.

Full review to come.

Broken hearts Cole & Ana are thrown through the ringer with a stalker, secret workplace romance, Cole’s boss mingling in his dating life, and just the regular past heartbreak all trying to distance their white-hot attraction for each other. Battle Scars is a great ending to THAT cliffhanger that we were left with in Bad Things.

Make sure to pick up this duet and see if Cole & Ana are able to break free from their Battle Scars or let the outsider influences send them down a separate path….

The second instalment in the Love Is Messy Duet, we get Cole and Ana's story.

I have been waiting so patiently for this novel, so when it landed in my kindle it was excitement central.
I desperately wanted to know what happened with Cole and Ana.
And I finally got the answers that I had so patiently (or not so patiently) waited for.

Ana, an up and coming new author, Cole her editor.
They fall for each other....
Hard....

But Ana has a past.
A brutal and disturbing past.
It left her damaged, destroyed not only physically, but emotionally.
So trusting another is hard for Ana.
But when she meets Cole, when she is in his arms, everything in her world is right.

And Cole.
Left bitter and twisted by past hurt, Cole has shut himself off. His heart is off limits.
That is until the beautiful Ana walks into his life.

They are a beautiful couple.

But be careful......

Happiness can be short lived.
Trust can be easily broken.
Secrets can destroy.
And monsters can find you, no matter how safe you think you are.

I thoroughly enjoyed Battle Scars. Full of suspense, highly emotional and all things naughty. Breathtaking and heartwarming. An overall powerful read.
Also being reunited with Luke, Lexi and their babies......Brilliant.

A great way to end a duet.

4 stars.

Battle Scars is the second, and final part to Cole and Ana's story, so I must remind people that they need to read Bad Things first. This story finds Ana and Cole trying to navigate through a new relationship together, while they work on getting rid of past demons. But unfortunately, there are still secrets waiting in the wings to be revealed, and a dangerous shadow looming. Since this is the perfect ending to their story, I'm not coming off much, because seriously, just go read it! Although, Ana and Cole are doing better, he's still making some questionable decisions that make me want to shake him. BUT, as his walls are coming down, it's making him human and easier to love again. I will NEVER EVER stop saying this, so here goes....Emily Goodwin's brilliant writing style never ceases to amaze me, even if she does make my eyes leak, and emotions to run rampant with her special angsty goodness. The intensity of this story had me feeling like there was a sword over my head the whole time, which kept me on the edge of my seat. And that led to some very loud f-bomb dropping moments that probably could be heard for miles. The bumpy ride had me all jacked up, since it felt so realistic, as is there really ever the perfect romance out there in real life? One thing didn't change, and that's the FIERY FLAMES of panty destroying sexy times that I couldn't get enough of. But that's enough out of me, experience the magic for yourselves! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

I absolutely loved this book!

I recently read that Emily was originally only going to write the one book in this series but the words just kept coming and it turned into 4!

Hot Mess was the first of Emily's books that I had read and I absolutely loved it and this made me read so many more of them.

We met Cole and Ana and got to see another side to Cole, which I have to say I was happy to see this side of him as I really didn't like him in the previous 2 books of the series!

We have been able to see why Cole is the way he was and why he was so bitter, and with Ana we see that she has started to settle in to life in New York and is trying to give her relationship with Cole a go but unfortunately her Ex doesn't want to stay her Ex and begins to stalk Ana.

I am not going to give any spoilers away but all I will say is that Emily ties up any loose ends that were in previous books and gives me the ending I was hoping for!

The series is made up of 4 books (2 duets) the first 2 are Lexi and Luke's story and the 3rd and 4th books are Cole and Ana's story. You could read the last 2 books without reading the others in the series but they are so good I would totally recommend reading all 4!

Battle Scars took me on a WILD ride!  Continuing on from book one, Battle Scars digs deep into the love story of Ana and Cole.  I absolutely loved the connection these two had...they had a great respect for one another, which showed in the handling of one another's pasts, and the heat between these two could burn up the pages of the novel itself...if I were reading a paperback.  Hot, hot, HOT!

And yet all at the same time, there was a slight hesitance from both as the memory of past heartbreak haunted them both.  Easily the back and forth of not knowing if they were moving too fast or if the other was the one would almost be enough to ratchet up the emotion...but Emily Goodwin threw in more drama that definitely kept me on my toes all the way through which I really appreciated!

I was so engrossed in Battle Scars that I read it in one sitting.  It is book two in the Love is Messy Duet, so reading Bad Things is kind of important in understanding the pasts of Ana and Cole as they are referenced throughout the entire second novel.

Overall, I was pleased with this book.  I could have used a little more angst in it, but it absolutely has put Emily Goodwin on my radar for anything else she writes.

I was super excited to jump into this story, especially with how Bad Things ended.

Battle Scars is book 2 in the Love is Messy Duet, & it continues to follow Diana’s & Cole’s story & relationship. Can their relationship last through the strains of working together? Can they over come their crazy pasts, and move into a better future? Or are they on a collision course for heartbreak and disaster?

I absolutely still love Cole. Even if he believes he’s the villain in his own story- and he would know, being an editor, and reading books for a living. And I love Diana, and her quirky weirdness- who is just so relatable, not only because she is a nerd at heart. I’ve have been in such a similar relationship as she was with her ex, & it was so relatable. I know first hand all too well some of the things she experienced, & felt. I also love her geeky side & all the references from books, comics, shows, & movies- takes after my own heart!

These two have been my first Emily Goodwin books, and If you are looking for a quick, romantic read i definitely recommend the Love is Messy duets- Bad Things & Battle Scars. I read both in under a day, because i just couldn’t get enough of Cole & Diana, & their story together! I give this book & series  5 ⭐ out of 5⭐ I absolutely loved it!

This was a fab conclusion to Cole and Ana’s story.

“There’s really no denying it anymore, I’m falling for this woman, and I’m plummeting fast.”

Cole and Ana are still in a tentative place in their relationship, both fearful to rock the boat by pushing for something more, and also hiding details about their pasts.

“Wherever he is, is where I want to be.”

Ana is almost in a limbo state, in terms of her living arrangements, but when a face from Ana’s past comes back into her life, it affects not just her, but Cole, too. He realises that he’d do anything to keep her safe.

"You make me believe not only in love, but in magic."

This was a suspenseful and wonderful story as we follow Ana and Cole dealing with their issues and their deepening feelings, with a bit of danger thrown in. Both want to protect the other to the point that they might end up shattering their relationship. I really felt Ana’s fear and doubts, and I sympathised with Cole, as he tries to do the right thing. Everything is within his reach but he ends up making a mess of it!

This was an angsty, emotional, sexy read with a thoroughly satisfying conclusion. Totally recommend this duet!

Battle Scars is the conclusion to Bad Things, which left us all with a small cliffhanger.

I was very curious to see where that part of the story went, and for me it was mostly a non-event.

What ended up really holding my attention was the developing relationship between Cole and Ana, and how they learn to trust and share their pasts with each other. This was the real heart of the story.

I enjoyed watching their relationship grow, and they're interacting with each other's families.

What bothered me was Cole not understanding Ana enough to share his work interests with her. That didn't make a whole lot of sense to me based on the growing seriousness of their relationship. I would have expected that he would want to share that with Ana, being that she is an author and in the same business as he is.

I also would have liked to experience more interaction between Luke and Cole in this book. I really liked how Cole began to understand Luke better, and I would have liked to see Cole put that part of his past behind him once and for all.

Overall an excellent emotional read that I definitely recommend. This series had a little bit of everything: love, angst, drama, and family.

*** I voluntarily reviewed and advanced copy of this book.

Writing is good and I will look into other books by this author for that reason alone. I think the story was a creative idea as well. The first book about Cole and Ana ended with such an abrupt cliffhanger that it didn’t feel like the end of a book but rather the end of a chapter. I didn’t feel it came to the end smoothly. It seemed like the word limit was reached but the story had more to it so just start another book continuing with the next chapter. Picking up this book I was happy to see that we continued, it wasn’t straight in like you’d think. This book ended a bit quick. Not abrupt but I felt that once the drama part wrapped up, it was a rush to finish it. We never find out if Cole faces any issues at work dating an author even though it was such a huge part of the story, keeping it secret. Sure he gets the publisher position but was there any hurtles or not? We dive straight to Christmas and her family there, when we were only just in the fall and Ana was heading back to KY. Next thing we know they’re married and just delivered twins. I feel the last few chapters were rushed.
Overall a good story line and I really liked how the author handled the ex boyfriend stalker scene when it all comes to a head.

Marie's Tempting Reads ARC Review:

Can I just say how much I ADORED Cole after Battle Scars and how much this book had me weeping, sighing, my emotions bouncing every which way and the way Cole seemed not only less cold, but probably is one of the most magnificent heroes EVER written has me in such a state, I can't even describe it! OMG this story was so...SOOOOOO GOOD. There was so much scary situations from the ex and the way Cole was determined to protect Diana, was so heart-melting and touching and I never imagined he would end up being the BEST hero but he SO freaking was. I am still in awe over this duet! Emily Goodwin very much outdid herself with this duet and I can't tell you how much I ADORED every second of Battle Scars and the ending of this duet.

Cole and Diana is definitely my most preferred couple. Their romance is soft, sweet, sexy, and the way they feel about each other makes me happy. This duet had every one of my emotions running to the surface. This one will no doubt stay with me for a VEEEEEEERY long time!

Battle Scars gets a AMAZINGLY TOUCHING AND BEYOND FABULOUS FIVE SHOOTING STARS! This book is utter perfection and is an absolute MUST READ!!

I love Cole and Ana story at first I didn’t know who the heck was Diana at first when I read the first book. But realize it was actually Ana but she didn’t go by her real name. Anyways I was glad in the end that Steven finally went to jail for his crimes with stalking Cole and Ana among murder etc. he deserves that jail time. I still didn't understand why Cole didn’t tell Ana about what was going on though I do know that he was trying to protect her too. I still thought he should’ve told Ana not only Ana but his brother too about Steven and what was going on. I love the ending where they end up married with kids (twins at that) so cute!!!!

So I've been waiting on this book it seems forever but not really. And I'm not disappointed at all!!! I loved Cole and Ana finale all except it was the finale. I loved these two couples that are entwined in these books and want more!! I'm not sure how I'm going to write this review and not give anything away so it might be short. Of course you need to read the first book Bad Things or you will be totally lost. Cole and Ana have a lot of obstacles to go through to be together and Cole makes a lot of mistakes. And then they have Steven the crazy ex that keeps stalking them and causing problems. The build up of everything is so intense and keeps you on the edge of your seat that you will not stop reading until you finish the entire book!!! The only thing that stops this from being a full 5 star was the final collision with Steven wasn't as dynamic as the build up, I wanted just a bit more dramatics, a little more ompf to it but that's just me. It was still an amazing book that I highly recommend!- By Tina

Scars aren't only on the outside. They are hidden scars, scars that only your soul can recognize, well not only your soul, the soul of another that has suffered will recognize the battle scars.
Cole had those scars and suffered them alone. The guilt of the way he treated his brother, the jealousy and envy were things that tortured his soul, strained relationships and made him keep himself apart. When he meets Ana, well, all of those things changed for him. He let go of the things he held regret for and embraced the new feeling that she has brought about in her.
Ana, had scars that were both visible and hidden. Her scars brought about fear that would freeze her, but after meeting Cole, the paralysis melted and he became the balm to her fears.
In this book we start off right where we left off in Bad things.
Passionate, loving and filled with more fun and quirky moments that will make you heart melt. Cole goes through a major change loving her.
I loved every minute of their romance. Perfection!

This was a fantastic conclusion to Cole and Ana's story. I honestly didn't want it to end. I absolutely loved how she was able to open his heart and show that he could love and be able to receive true love as well. Cole was always so incredibly hard on himself, it almost hurt to read it. Deep down he was such a good man that only need the right woman to open him up. Ana was perfect for him and I just loved how they were with each other.

Of course there were times I just wanted him to open up to her and tell her what was going on but he felt that he needed to keep those things to himself. I was actually expecting her ex to cause more trouble than he did. Really glad Cole didn't let him get the upper hand. I also loved getting to see Cole and Luke's relationship mend further. Having their relationship strained was hard on both of the men and I loved seeing them be actual brother's instead of enemies.

I truly enjoyed Cole and Ana's story as well as Luke and Lexi's. These were all fantastic books. Sad to see the stories end. I'm going to miss all of them.

When I got to the last page of Bad Things I couldn’t wait to get my hands on Battle Scars to find out how everything would turn out for Cole and Ana. Well, the wait is over! Battle Scars is mysterious and sweet, and I fell more and more in love with Cole and Ana with each passing chapter.

I think what I like most about Cole and Ana is how real and relatable they are. I was invested in their relationship and I felt like the rate in which their feelings grew and changed throughout the course of the story was believable. There weren't as many sexy scenes in BS, but I liked it that way. It focused more on their emotional intimacy.

Their relationship, and the suspense and mystery surrounding Steven kept me intrigued, eager to find out what would happen when he inevitably caught up with them.

I thoroughly enjoyed the conclusion to Cole and Ana’s story. It was a well-paced, engaging romance. It is NOT a standalone, so be sure to read Bad Things before you begin!

I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book (given by Hype PR)...

3.5 stars

After the cliffhanger in Bad Things I really expected this book to have more action especially with the appearance of Steven, but the story fell a little flat for me. I felt that for most of this book Ana and Cole just kept repeating their same insecurities they had in the previous book and didn't really make any strides to overcome them. Also I have to say the way they handled the Steven situation was very sloppy and dangerous, I won't go into to details but I felt they had other options to make him go away.

I guess in the end it was the constant secret keeping and obstacle avoidances throughout the book that made it a little to difficult to read. I wanted to like Ana and Cole, but they just came off as a little annoying with Cole's consistent jealousy of Luke and Ana's complete disregard for her safety by ignoring Steven's actions.

Battle Scars by Emily Goodwin is the second book in the Love is Messy Duet spinoff.
Book one is Bad Things
Battle Scars is the conclusion to Cole and Ana´s story.
Cole is Luke´s brother and Lexi´s boss. He is lonely and on the sidelines of his brother´s family life.
But he is also very career driven. And then comes a new writer, Diana.
Cole wants her, bad; but he also wants the promotion.
I didn´t like Cole much in Hot Mess. He was cold, petty and angry.
But now in Bad Things and especially in Battle Scars he shows his other side. His loving and caring side. Yes he has faults and makes mistakes, big ones, but he´s only human- with goodness, bad choices and everything else.

I really, really love this book and this whole series. I love the characters, I love the words and I love the writing. I recommend Battle Scars and give 5 Stars. Thank you Emily Goodwin !

Right! Where do I begin. Well I have to say after a hell of a cliffhanger at the end of the last book. I have been left a little disappointed if I am completely honest. I like the book don't get me wrong but it fell flat and seem to go nowhere for me.

The story was sweet and the relationship that began to build and build was really good but it sort went around in circles and the story had no substance to it in my opinion. Cole and Ana make a great couple and the way she pulls Cole out of himself is what really saves this book for me. And they way he is building a relationship with Luke, Lexi and their children is a highlight too.

Emily had fast made herself a force to be reckoned with in the romance world and I really recommend this book and feel that people need to read what she has to offer. They most certainly won't be disappointed

Battle Scars - Emily Goodwin

I was given this book for an honest and unbiased review.

**** 4 STARS

This is the conclusion to Cole and Ana's story from the previous book, Bad Things.

Cole and Anna didn't have such brilliant pasts but their emotional and physical connection is further explored in this book and a few secrets and some further story elements revealed.

I was thoroughly absorbed by Cole and Anna's relationship, though Emily Goodwin showed us more of the emotional side than the physical this time around, it did round out the story nicely and tied the connections, suspense and mystery together in a neat completion to the story.

An enjoyable romantics read with well developed characters and a solidly structured story. Definitely read Bad Things before you read Battle Scars though.

Loved this book so much. Ana and Cole have a rough ride. Cole is trying to get a big promotion at work but doesn't want people there to know he's with Ana because he is her editor/publisher. He thinks they won't pick him for that. Ana has a crazy ex, Steven, who just can't let her go. He begins to infiltrate both their lives. He has a moment where he's successful. Cole lies and Ana is there to see it. But in the end we all have battle scars that we push through for for the right person. They do just that. Awesome ending to their story. I also love how characters from the previous books shine through. I think it is awesome to see more of their future! Another perfect read Emily. Book addiction is real! Ha!

I have read all of the Love is Messy books. While I did enjoy them, and they kept me on the edge of my seat, I did find myself disappointed in the second part of both stories. I was looking forward to read Cole's story, which surprised me because he was very unlikable in Hot Mess/Twice Burned. But he won me over right away, because we've all made mistakes. I felt like Battle Scars was a bit rushed, and would have loved to have gotten to the same conclusion with a little more depth along the way. That being said, I will continue to read Emily Goodwin's books, because she crafts a good story and makes you really care about the characters and what happens to them.

Here we take off where book one finished. Ana and Cole slowly finding their way as a couple, but with both their pasts throwing them big hurtles along the way.

Now I must admit, with all the hurdles that seemed to be building for this couple, I would of liked to have seen a bit more actually affect this couple, not because I'm sadistic, but because I wanted to see how the extra stress on their relationship could affect them, in a good way.

Plus you will be pleased to know that Ana and Cole finally get their HEA in this book. I'm hoping that there is another spin off in this series, just so I can see how the couple is going now.
