The first few chapters were not really working for me. The sentences felt too choppy, and there wasn't really enough explanation of what was going on for me to decide if I was on Beri's side of whatever the heck was happening with Rae (still don't know what it was) or not. As I was reading the first few chapters, I kept being reminded of "The Accidental Tourist" (which I pretty much hated) and I think this was mainly because everyone seems sad all the time, it took a while to find out what we were even talking about (which was more annoying than suspenseful), and I didn't find the main character particularly likable.
But then she met Jude, and the story seemed more interesting. Beri started to grow on me. I got more attached to her character and curious to see where things were going. And either the sentences got less choppy, or I got used to the style. Still, there were some annoying things that distracted me... for example, Jude's story of his life seems far-fetched and I don't understand why Beri just blindly assumes this stranger is being honest with her. And at no point is it mentioned that they exchanged numbers, though this seems like something significant enough that we'd hear about it, especially since I'd think that the decision to share phone numbers with a stranger in an airport would cause at least a little anxiety, so when Jude says he'll be in touch I was like, "wait, what? How? He doesn't have her number." Also his text messages are super cryptic to the point of being indecipherable (WTH does "YR FLT" even mean?? I don't know; does Beri?) and Beri doesn't ask about it. And why do their text messages show names we've never heard? It took me a while to decide "JB Loew" must be Jude, but why is it showing up like that? So.... yeah. The details kept distracting me.
Despite those distracting details, by the end of part 1, this story has pulled itself up from a very sad one or two stars to a solid three stars, and what feels like a good potential to become a page-turner of a four-star story. I am definitely waiting for the other shoe to drop, wondering what kind of twists are coming in the next part(s). I'm positive that Jude is too good to be true, but I'm wondering just what Beri will do about that, and how long it will take her to catch on.
I received a free copy of part 1 and voluntarily chose to review.

I took a chance on this one, as the author's history is non-fiction which I enjoy as well, but METTLE appeared to be the author's first foray into fiction. I now hope this writer continues in the fiction world as I found METTLE Part 1 an enjoyable read. The pace pulls you along at first tentatively, then before you know it you find yourself invested in seeing where things are headed. I finished in a sitting and found myself looking forward to Part 2. There's the feeling something is amiss and that there are surprises and twists ahead. It was reading time well spent.
The story started out a little abstract for me, but it gained purchase as the tale unfolded. Beri and Jude are inextricably drawn to each other and have great untapped chemistry. There is more depth to each of their stories, and I'm not sure if I'm getting a "good guy" vibe off of Jude or not. I was glad I had part 2 to go right into, because part one left me hanging and wanting MORE!
I started reading this book after receiving an ARC from the author. Initially unable to get into it, I stopped and read something else. I then picked it up again, and to my surprise really enjoyed it. The first third is quite slow, but then the pace picks up, and as it's the first part of a series I have high hopes that the next book(s) will be even better!
