Set in the African savannah and told from three different animals' points of view, Bravelands will thrill readers who love Spirit Animals and Wings of Fire, as well as the legion of dedicated fans who've made Erin Hunter a bestselling phenomenon.
A baboon who has uncovered an act of treachery.
An elephant uncertain of her fate.
A lion poised to strike.
The code of the wild has been broken. The elephant leader known as Great Mother has been murdered. And Bravelands is on the edge of chaos. Now a young baboon, elephant, and lion must come together to discover the truth--before the fragile balance of Bravelands is destroyed forever.
Erin Hunter is inspired by a love of cats and a fascination with the ferocity of the natural world. As well as having a great respect for nature in all its forms, Erin enjoys creating rich mythical explanations for animal behavior, shaped by her interest in astronomy and standing stones.
Wow....I didn't realize how intense this series was going to be! If you have a younger one that's interested in this series, but may be sensitive to the death of animals, please keep that in mind before diving in.
Okay, so to be honest there isn't much that I can say about this book because it is the second book in the series. Nevertheless, I can say that I've never disliked a character as much as I dislike Stinger. He's a real piece of work, dangerous, and manipulative. I absolutely adore Thorn and Sky. I'm going to need Fearless to pull it together. Honestly, I feel like his perspective is my least favorite at times, but he's so naïve. Granted, I think that this naivety will play a huge role in his story arc, but he's just a tad bit frustrating as a character.
Overall, this was another great installment in the series. I absolutely love what Erin Hunter is doing with this series and it's motivated me to continue on with the rest of the series as well as the other books that they've written. If you like political intrigue, betrayal, high stakes plot, intense, complicated, and messy character, then I definitely recommend that you try this one out.
I thought it would be impossible to outshine the first book but Hunter proved her skill as an,amazing storyteller in the 2nd novel of the bravelands series.
I finished this book in 2 days because I literally could not stop thinking about it and how it would end. This was a real page turner and had me enthralled with every chapter. These characters are amazingly well developed and the amount of absolute treachery in this book was astounding!
I almost lost,my mind a few times will all the angst going on and how much I wanted Stinger dead, I actually found I hated, him more than even Titan (who I always envisioned as the big bad of bravelands.)
what a cliffhanger! I almost recommend not reading this book until the 3rd one is out cause the ending will drive you out of your mind! I will be willing to say that this series is starting out amazingly strong and has the potential to outshine warriors.
Bravelands is an awesome new series that personifies different types of animals who live in Africa. The main characters are a young baboon, lion and elephant. There is terrible evil working against the Great Spirit and Code that rule the Bravelands. There is so much manipulation that the good animals have no clue who to trust. Bad things happen in book 2, including a heartbreaking death. Wow!
The Bravelands are still in a state of chaos after the Great Mother Elephant strider has died and now more bloodshed and violence have occurred. Will Thorn the baboon, Sky the Elephant and Fearless the lion all survive and help to find the one the Great Spirit has called upon to save Bravelands? Read on and find out for yourself.
This was a great second installment of the Bravelands series by Erin Hunter. It was action-packed and is a great animal story. If you love animal stories, be sure to check this book out at your local library and wherever books are sold.
This is going to be a very spoilery review but before I get into that I'll just say to anyone who's apprehensive about continuing the series that it's worth it, but have a box of tissues and a pint of ice cream on hand because this book is depressing.
The Bravelands are in turmoil. The weather is more bipolar than springtime in Pennsylvania, and treachery and deceit are spreading. This entire book is about the turmoil that grips Bravelands as the future becomes more and more uncertain. In this desperation, charismatic and brutal tyrants like Titan and Stinger thrive, but the seeds are sown for their downfall.
Fearless continues to bide his time to avenge his father's death and take back his pride, but as Titan's atrocities grow he realizes that the time is coming sooner than he thought. His arc hasn't changed much from the first book, except that Stinger has managed to take advantage of him and Fearless begins to distrust Loyal after his mother's dying words.
Thorn's arc is the main focus of this book. He is chosen for an elite group of guards (disturbingly similar to the Gestapo and similar groups) called Strongbranches and caught in Stinger's 4D chess game. He too is biding his time, but he is forced to commit atrocities to divert suspicion away from him. Unbeknownst to him, Stinger knows exactly what he is planning, and uses it to his advantage. The ending of this book is one of the most dismal things (in fiction) I've ever read because of that. I'm not a big cryer but I was definitely screaming "NO!" at several points. Quietly, because I live in a dorm room and I share walls with people. A note on the ending: My theory is that Thorn is the new Great Father. I'm pretty sure he's not going to die because he's the only baboon POV character and switching POV characters at this point would be strange. Also, I can't believe Frog and Starleaf died.
Speaking of characters whose deaths I'm still in denial of, MOON! Sky's arc was a journey to seek answers from the Great Spirit. Moon tags along, but Titan and his cronies track them down and kill Moon in a display of power. Because killing a freaking baby really makes one look powerful. >.> Sky gains a power-up and can now see the memories of living animals by touching them. The transitions into the memories are confusing but it does make sense that she would have this power since she's the Great Spirit's temporary vessel. We're also introduced to Silverhorn, who is adorable, and Rock, a lone bull elephant who is a great surrogate parental figure for the two of them. I'm looking forward to seeing more of those two in the future, but now I'm paranoid because of the body count of this book.
Now I have to wait till October and that's the worst part. The fact that I care so much about these characters is why this book gets 5 stars, that and the plot and pacing are well done. I think this series is written better than the later Warrior Cats books, though those are going up in quality. And I think part of the reason is because this is a new series that hasn't been going on for 10 years and having multiple spinoffs. So I hope the plot stays as neatly written as it is and doesn't get tangled, though I must say a manga series or Super Editions would not be unwelcome. My main priority with stories is the characters, though, and I don't anticipate the character quality dropping anytime soon. I'm glad none of these characters feel like clones of Warriors, Seekers, or Survivors characters (as far as I know). I do see some similarities, such as Sky and Lusa, but they have enough differences to not be the exact same characters. This is quite an accomplishment considering the number of characters the Erins have made must be up in the 100's by now.
It felt kind of dragged through at the start, but the end was intense. My favorite character in this book is Sky, and my favorite part was when Ruthless saves Fearless. It was also so sad when Moon died, and I wish Fearless had gotten there in time. I feel like Thorn could have at least told his friends a small portion of what was going on and let them help him instead of trying to keep them safe and pushing them away. Altogether, it was a good second read and I am excited for the next.
Summary: A Gathering is called and a rhino named Stronghide becomes the first rhinoceros Great Parent. Fearless, still in Titanpride, goes with Valor to watch, and on their way back, they find out that the rest of Titanpride has been breaking the code and killing hyenas for no reason. Meanwhile, the Brightforest Troop has moved territory and Thorn doesn’t know who to trust with the secret of Stinger, but he finds Nut, the banished baboon, and decides to tell him the truth. One day, Berry gets attacked by monkeys and loses her tail, so Stinger launches an attack back on them. In Sky’s herd, she and Moon, her cousin, have gone to the Plain of Our Ancestors to look for answers, and are cornered by a rhino. The rhino, Silverhorn, turns out to be friendly and wants to see the bones of the Great Parents in order to make up for a large mistake she made. Sky visits more bones and sees more vision, when suddenly a vulture snatches Great Mother’s bones and flies off. Meanwhile, Fearless hears about a plan on Titanpride to hunt two young elephants and goes to warn the Strider herd, and they ask him to find both of them. In the Brightforest Troop, Thorn finds Frog, one of his friends, dead, and goes to investigate what really caused Great Mother’s death. He finds a broken rhino horn and comes to the conclusion that Stronghide, the new Great Parent, killed Great Mother. Near the Plain of Our Ancestors, Sky, Moon, and Silverhorn follow the vulture with Great Mother’s bones, and are ambushed by the lions of Titanpride. Sky calls out desperately for help, but before a bull elephant named Rock can save them and scare off the lions, Titan injures Moon badly, and he dies right after Sky tells him the happy ending of a story. In Brightforest Troop, Stinger stops tolerating anyone who speaks out about his wrongdoing, and banishes Beetle, an elderly longtime troop member, and wants his Strongbranches to kill Starleaf, who is the guider and signreader for Brightforest Troop, and also Mud’s mother. Meanwhile, Titanpride takes Dauntlesspride, and Fearless lets Dauntless’ cub go without harm, and Titan confronts him about this and is about to kill Fearless when Ruthless, the son of Titan, says that Fearless did harm the cub and Titan relents. Fearless visits Loyal, and, knowing that Titan was about to break his oath, decides to leave the pride with Valor and his mother and stay with Loyal. Mud visits Fearless, and after, Valor brings the news that Swift, their mother, is dying. When Swift does die, Fearless vows again to avenge her and Gallant. In the valley, when Sky finally catches up to the vulture with Great Mother’s bones, the vulture tells her she has the Great Spirit and needs to pass it on to a lion from one of the vulture’s memories. In the forest, Thorn tells a few animal herds that rhinos were responsible for Great Mother’s death, but Stinger stops him and doesn’t let him wander off anymore. Sky finds out that Silverhorn didn’t warn Great Mother of Stronghide’s plan of murdering Great Mother, and knows that someone must have manipulated Stronghide into thinking Great Mother had to be killed. Later, Thorn talks with Stronghide and figures out that Stinger was manipulating him, so he confronts Stinger, planning on killing him, and he gets knocked out by a Strongbranch. When he wakes up, he realizes he is at the center of a gathering where Stinger is framing him for murder and trying to kill him. Thorn tries to defend himself and say that Stinger is the real murderer, but not even Berry or Mud believe him. Fearless believes Stinger, so when Stinger and the other animals at the gathering say to kill Thorn, Fearless complies, his jaws wide open for the kill . . .

What. The. Heck. That is SO RUDE, Erin Hunter! You can't just make me wait for a WHOLE EIGHT MONTHS to see if Thorn really dies, if Fearless is ever gonna use his brain, if Sky can find the Great Parent... I mean, you can make me wait for that, but gosh darn it I want to know NOW!

Not as good as the first book, but still SO INTENSE.
Code of Honor was so fast paced and had just SO MUCH going on ALL AT THE SAME TIME and all my favorite characters are in life threatening, extreme situations that get worse and worse that I thought I might have been reading an African Safari version of Games of Thrones.
I'm mean, dang, Erin Hunter. Couldn't you at least have hinted at some light at the end of the tunnel before shoving me full throttle over that cliffhanger?
If you thought that the first installment in the Bravelands series was remarkable for ending on such a cliffhanger, you are in for quite the surprise with Code of Honor! In a shocking series of revelations and twists in the plot, the lives of the three protagonists are challenged in a variety of ways once more. While a book for children and written on that level, the themes are dark, the intrigue is complex, and the underlying message about the sway of leaders is powerfully intense! I loved this book because it brought out emotion as I read; Stinger and Titan are the perfect villains and are so detestable it reminds me of the famous Tigerstar of the Warriors series.
As many other reviewers have mentioned, the end is a really edge-of-your-seat cliffhanger. I was amazed at the talent that brought the story to this point and look forward to reading more in the next book! The reason why I rated this only 4 stars was because of two deaths in the book; one of which I found to be utterly pointless and the other which I saw as being heart-wrenching in a slow and anticlimactic way. The dangers of a well-spoken, convincing leader are embodied in this book and it carries a haunting tone about governance in an age of "he-said/she-said." Finally, I'm SO excited for the next book to come out. This was an excellent followup to the first Bravelands book and it kept the momentum going!
(some animals do die in this book so if that bothers you then I wouldn't recommend reading it)
The book Code of Honor by Erin Hunter is about a baboon, lion, and elephant that are all trying to save their home land of Bravelands from being torn apart. I believe that the theme of this book is to keep on going no matter what the world throws at you. The genre of this book is fantasy fiction because all of the animals in Bravelands speak different languages and will meet at a time of peace where predators will talk to prey without attacking. This book takes place in Bravelands which is in Africa. There is a watering hole where all of the animals will come to speak to the great parent, who has the great spirit inside of them. The rest of Bravelands consists of plains, mountains, and valleys, but there is one other important place. The Plain of Our Ancestors, it is where all of the elephants will put the bones of other elephants that have passed away. There are many, many characters in this book, the main protagonists are Thorn the baboon, Fearless the lion, and Sky the elephant. The main antagonists are Titan the lion and Stinger the baboon. Titan took over Fearless’s pride and is now killing all of the animals in Braveland so that he can rule. Stinger killed his way to be Crownleaf of his troop and got a rhino to kill the great mother so that he could become Great Father. I really liked this book and once I started to read it I couldn’t put it down to the point where I finished it in three days. I have read another series of books by Erin Hunter called Warriors and I have liked this one just as much. Sometimes each chapter will end with a cliffhanger then go on to a different animal’s point of view. This has really kept me reading the book. Also, sometimes one of the animal’s point of view will get a little boring but they make up for that because the other storylines are always full of action. All in all I think that Code of Honor by Erin Hunter is a very good book. Anyone over the age of seven would love this book and I could see everyone wanting to read the next book after this one. I started to read books by this author when I was nine and haven’t stopped so I could easily see someone getting hooked into this book before then. This book is very good and I would recommend reading book one of Bravelands before this so that it will make sense, I hope you will try out this book!
This is the first book in the series that I read. I found it to be a good stand alone book where, while it made great references to the first book, it wasn't necessary to read that first book. It is very well written and had a compelling storyline that had me absorbed in reading it. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.
Despite the stuff that annoyed me in Broken Pride, I'm still going to read this one sometime. I want to know what happens to Thorn (the only main character I really care about), and also, there was that cliffhanger,,,
Maybe I'm an old fart and can't deal with these kinds of stories anymore but the fact that 2/3 plotlines dealt with corrupt leader drama felt very lazy. Also the fact I disliked BOTH male leads and their corrupt leader drama meant I was skimming through their sections because the only character I gave any craps about was Sky.
And annoyingly enough Sky did not get much screentime at all.
To me this is the best book of the first arc. We get some good character development (I LOVE Thorn and Fearless so much) and our villain is definitely my favorite Erin Hunter villain to date. The stakes are growing ever higher. I can only wonder if book three can top this.
As I read the book it became harder and harder to put it down. While it was easy to predict some of what would happen, I still got satisfaction from being right and enjoyed it when I was wrong about a plot twist. Overall, another great book by Erin Hunter.
