The Science of Boredom: The Upside (and Downside) of Downtime

Rate this book
Are we living in an age where we are more boredom-prone?
Or are other people boring us?
Or could we be that boring person?!

In our current information age, we are constantly connected to technology, and have so many varied ways to spend our leisure time that we should all surely never know what boredom feels like. Yet, boredom appears to be on the rise; it seems that the more we have to stimulate us, the more stimulation we crave.

In a quest to relieve our boredom, we engage in dangerous risk-taking - from extreme sports to drugs to gambling to anti-social behaviour, or we overindulge in shopping or eating.

The Science of Boredom explores the causes and consequences of boredom in the fast-paced twenty-first century. Parents are desperate to keep their children entertained during every waking moment, the education system is geared towards interactivity, and attention spans are dropping as we use multiple devices at all times. But the world of work can be increasingly repetitive and routine, and we are losing the ability to tolerate this everyday tedium.

Using Sandi Mann's own ground-breaking research into boredom, this book tells the story of how we act, react and cope when we are bored, and argues that there is a positive side to boredom. It can be a catalyst for humour, fun, reflection, creativity and inspiration. The radical solution to the 'boredom problem' is to harness it rather than try to avoid it. Allowing yourself time away from constant stimuli can enrich your life. We should all embrace our boredom and see the upside of our downtime.

The title of this book was completely misleading as was some of the blurb. Far from being a book focused on the 'upside' of boredom the first 11 chapters focused solely on the negative impacts of boredom, how it comes about and then some random chapters on boring people and how they might be autistic!!

Some of those chapters were interesting to a certain extent but the chapter on the actual 'upside' and how boredom can be harnessed to feed creativity and innovation seemed like a rushed afterthought made up of bullet point lists and very little little analytical backing.

Speaking of analysis, a lot of the studies carried out by the author seemed to only include a few hundred candidates which hardly seems like a strong enough sample size to make some of the conclusions stated in the book.

The format of the book was also frustrating with inset boxes detailing strange little stories that sometimes were relevant and other times were completely superfluous. These boxes broke up the flow of the book making it even more difficult to stick with.

Not a book I'll be recommending to others which is such a shame because the idea behind the title, at least, seemed so strong.

I had never thought I had pick up this book. A book about the intricacies of boredom wouldn't fit the life of a scheduled guy like me was what i thought.
But this book is different. Packed with exhaustive research regarding the aspects of boredom as a much neglected yet significant emotion, the author talks about boredom in detail and what role it has to play in the life of any individual in the 21st century, where over-stimulation and novelty seeking is the stick driving the generation. From the classroom to the workplace to the characteristics of a boring person, it quite simply examines and puts forward what is boredom in different contexts and what it does to us.

Quite a read if you're not bored easily!!!

Some interesting insights and research, but the book is in desperate need of better copy editing and formatting.

It’s not easy to get into a reading flow, with constant distractions like (see chapter 7 for more), boxed stories, boring bullet points and so on.

It read to me a bit like an undergraduate dissertation, full of unnecessary explanations and the spelling out of concepts and ideas to pad out word counts.

A disappointing read - the subject matter of boredom is very interesting but this book’s formatting and approach lets it down.

An interesting book which explain why an individual feel bored and the effects. Boring is mostly caused by lack of meaningful task and lack of novelty. People are often watching tv or surfing nets to fill their boredom time, but these activities are too passive and less engaging to truly cure their boredom. Thus, it is encouraging to do prosocial and outdoor activities. People use boredom as their excuse for the thing that is too hard or tedious for them (math, school, etc). However, boredom has its advantage too. By having boredom, people always try to innovate, people try to communicate, people search for meaningful task such as helping others. The book teach us to understand boredom, appreciate boredom and use boredom.

Masih topik mengenai kebosanan.

"Habituation allows us to screen out those things that we no longer need to pay attention to," demikian kata buku ini.

Three main stages of mindfulness:
(1) focusing attention towards an 'attentional anchor' (often this is the process of breathing in and out,
(2) noticing when distraction occurs and trying to tune out that distraction,
(3) refocusing or reorienting attention back to the 'attentional anchor'.

Loved this, boredom is such an intriguing topic and if you have suffered teaching, the big question is who is more bored, you or your students. There are some advantages in being bored, like space and time and creativity, but some limits as well. I think this book is written in a way that makes if fast moving, with side boxes, and is definitely not boring. And if you are bored, try chewing gum or doodling.

I quite enjoyed the exploring of boredom. I thought boom was strongest when discussing the recent rise, the potential link with adhd and the upsides to it.

Thought the book was weakest when going thorough a boring person as that's so subjective .
