An Unexpected Beginning

Rate this book
Death ignited her powers. Love binds them.
Paisley’s normal, boring life is shattered one evening when a strange, but sexy woman appears out of thin air in her living room and claims Paisley as her wife. Things spiral out of control when Paisley is informed by her mother that she is a witch that comes from a long line of witches, that other realms exist, and that the strange woman really is her wife.
As her choices slip from her grasp, Paisley must learn to navigate her new life, a new world, and a new wife. As if that wasn’t enough, Paisley must deal with a growing attraction for a new woman in her life. Throw in a dragon egg, an angry queen, a traitor, and Paisley realizes she’s going to have to learn to watch every move she makes.
As the push and pull between two women and her powers reach a standoff, Paisley makes a choice that will change the course of her life and the future of the world she calls home even if that means destroying her own happiness in the process.

Some unflagged spoilers, but most are mentioned in the book's blurb, so nothing story-breaking.

Okay, let me start by saying that the DNF on this one is entirely my fault. If I'd read the entire book description rather than just going "Ooo..DragonWitch!" and grabbing the sample, I would've saved myself a lot of disappointment which, again, was entirely my fault.

So, going into this pretty blind, I thought, "Wow, that's an interesting premise--a surprise paranormal arranged marriage." I may or may not have then imagined some chemistry between what I believed to be--but actually turned out not to be (I really should've read that description)--the two romantic leads. "Neat!," thought I, "these two have some pretty unique obstacles to overcome, but I like them together and I can't wait to see how they work through their issues."

Yeah, that doesn't happen, which, again, I would've known if I'd read the book description. It actually turned into a love-at-first-sight, double-reverse-age-gap, instant-family, saving-the-misunderstood-underdog, kind-of-out-of-the-blue-at-the-50ish%-point story, completely killing all of the story lines I thought were being set up at the beginning of the book in the process. Sooo, there's that.

The writing, for the most part, seemed quite good. Yes, it did feel like Paisley was just going around and around on the same emotional carousel for ages, but she was dealing with an entire catalogue of life-changing stuff. There were also quite a few typos, but they were pretty easily overlooked. The real trouble for me here was that I felt the narrative was telling me one story that had me hooked, when in actuality it was telling me an entirely different story that I wasn't particularly interested in. That's not the author's fault, that's all on me.

DNF at 58%

Better luck to more observant readers.

Very Good Start To New Romantic Fantasy/Adventure Series.

I really liked the premise of this book. I think it would be considered a romantic fantasy/adventure, with lots of magic, alternate worlds and the promise of dragons to come in future works. The world building is very good and the plot is interesting and original. There's a lot going on in this story and several characters to keep track of, but the author does a great job of pulling everything together in the end.

I really enjoyed reading this book and I can't wait for the next book in the series. I rate this 4.5 stars (the beginning is a little choppy and a few more details would help).
