I can help take care of me: A book about type 1 diabetes

Rate this book
"I can help take care of me" is a poetic introduction for children to life with diabetes. The book goes through the standard methods of care that a child will be living with, demonstrates how the equipment works and what it does. The book should help a child to see that his diagnosis is not the end of the world and is something that he'll live and work with. The book is also an excellent teaching tool for other family members, teachers, classmates and others who the child will be interacting with that need some knowledge of the condition.

As a Diabetic, I was quite impressed with how Yerachmiel B. Altman tackled such a difficult topic, especially for children (who can be quite upset, angry and stubborn when diagnosed with Diabetes). The earlier they are educated on all aspects of the disease and are taught that Diabetes is not a death sentence, the better. When a Diabetic child realises how important it is to tell the people around them that they are not feeling well, it soon becomes second nature to them to take care of themselves and to alert others that they may be in danger. Yerachmiel B. Altman has not only taken the mystery, stigma and fear out of Diabetes, but has also taught a child to feel empowered, in that they are more aware of their symptoms than anybody else and can play a part in making sure they, themselves are well. Educating parents about the fact that their children cannot catch the disease from those with Diabetes is also covered. I recommend ‘I Can Help Take Care Of Me’ to all newly diagnosed Diabetics, their friends, families and peers.

Diabetes from a child's perspective

I have had diabetes since I was two. When looking at books written for children who have diabetes I had not been able to find anything that covered the actual events, machines, techniques, worries and daily testing and care while providing a positive outlook on the entire sequence of events.

I have stressed in my writing this book to ensure that children in the appropriate age range would find information helpful to themselves and be able to understand it.

Whimsical children's book about type 1 diabetes

The diagnosis of diabetes in a young child can be terrifying to parents and child alike. This book helps lighten the burden by making diabetes tasks understandable with humor and rhyme. A must-have for anyone struggling to understand and manage life with type 1 diabetes.

A beautifully gentle introduction, this book speaks directly to children stepping into a new chapter of self-care. It blends clear explanations with relatable imagery, showing young readers that managing their health can become a natural part of life rather than a limitation. By walking through everyday routines and demonstrating the tools they’ll use, it replaces fear with understanding. Beyond supporting the child, it also serves as a thoughtful resource for parents, educators, friends, and anyone wanting to offer informed encouragement and empathy.

This gentle, engaging book offers young readers a reassuring look at life with a new medical routine. Through relatable characters and lifelike scenes, it captures both the challenges and the small victories of adapting to daily self-care. The storytelling is tender yet practical, giving children and families a sense of comfort while showing them that play, joy, and everyday adventures are still very much possible. The realistic photographs add a warm, familiar touch, making the journey feel personal and encouraging for children navigating similar experiences.

"I can help take care of me" is a poetic introduction for children living with diabetes. The book goes through the standard methods of care that a child will be living with, demonstrates how the equipment works and what it does. The book should help a child to see that his diagnosis is not the end of the world and is something that he'll live and work with. The book is also an excellent teaching tool for family members, teachers, classmates and others that need to become knowledgeable in diabetes.

I’ve written this book to help children diagnosed with type 1 diabetes learn the “basics”. It begins with the child’s diagnosis, gives simple explanations of what type 1 diabetes is, and then proceeds to show meters, pumps and CGMS sensors. It describes activities of daily living.

The aim is to familiarize children with the hardware and issues that they will be living with. This is NOT to be used as a medical book. I am NOT working with dosing, carbohydrate counting, or other specific medical issues as these must be handled by the medical team.
