Supernatural #2

Witch's Canyon

Rate this book
Twenty-two years ago, Sam and Dean Winchester lost their mother to a mysterious and demonic supernatural force. In the years after, their father, John, taught them about the paranormal evil that lives in the dark corners and on the back roads of America...and he taught them how to kill it.

Sam and Dean have set out on a road trip to the Grand Canyon, but this is no vacation for the brothers. On a stretch of deserted ranchland just beyond the canyon's stunning vistas, mysterious murder sprees have occurred every forty years. The area's inhabitants have been few and far between in years past, but a nearby mega-mall is about to celebrate its grand opening—and attract thousands of fresh victims.

The Winchester boys are determined to protect locals and shoppers alike, but they never anticipated they'd be fighting a group of killers this vicious, this vindictive, this . . . dead. A deadly horde of animal spirits and human ghosts has arisen to terrorize this tiny corner of the Arizona desert. If Sam and Dean can't figure out why, the wide-open spaces of the West will once again become a desolate frontier . . . and the witch's canyon will be the brothers' final resting place.

Update 2025:
I might have been a little hyped & overexcited over this book, maybe because book 1 didn't quite satisfy me.
this one was better, for sure. the thrills, the emotions. yeah great. but as much as I can't remember the reason why it so much captivated me, I just know I should lower the rating. (I remeber the feelings tho) 4 is fair.

original review:

THIS STORY,
description

When I read it, I should have forced myself to stop reading & sleep every night, otherwise I would be awake till the sun is up!
the case was intriguing!
I could imagine every scenes like I actually watching an episode! (& it belongs to season 2: it is important, because of Sam's hair; U know what I mean if you watch it. XD) & that feeling was AWESOME! (as I'm willing to see new stories about them; you know it feels like once again, I can be surprised for the first time & do fangirling)
& again:
description

Plot: ★★★★/5
the case makes much more sense than the first book (tho, the fun was a bit less)
at first it was a bit slow, but then the story pace raced & made me intrigued & hypothesized for myself & the last part, the last step was absolutely EPIC! the thrills & chills in my bones was real! my heart raced! oh boi!
the ending was so good!
-
World building: ★★★★/5
Characters: ★★★★★/5
written style: ★★★★/5
general idea: ★★★★★/5

I am rewatching Supernatural for spooky season so figured I would try one of the books too. The beginning of this book was awesome, I genuinely thought I was going to rate this 5 stars. The banter between Sam and Dean was perfect and there were nice looks at their internal thoughts.

About half way through, this book began to get extremely long winded and repetitive though. If this had been about half to 3/4 of the length it was, it would have been a 5 star read for me.

Still cool to read as a Supernatural lover, so I might try some of the others!

I don't remember a single episode with a death toll this high.
The brothers are fighting against a curse that raises the dead every forty years. Nobody knows for sure how it has started, which complicates things for the hunters.

I enjoyed this book in the series more than the first one. I felt that the Winchester's voice was actually captured in this book better than the first one. For being a book connected to a TV series I felt that it was good and kind of would have liked to see it brought to the TV.

Supernatural: Witch's Canyon is the second novel in the Supernatural series and was written by Jeff Mariotte & Eric Kripke. I've been a fan of the television series for years, but I've never read the books until now. I was glad I started because this book was great.
I love how I can picture Dean and Sam so clearly, and really see them acting and speaking the way the did throughout the book. It makes things excellent for fans of the television series, because you get more face time with Sam and Dean, and in a whole new way. Mariotte did a great job decribing the characters for us, especially those who aren't familiar with the television series.

The secondary characters who are decribed in the book don't stick around too long. I usually don't giveaway such a line but -lots of secondary characters die in this book. - It's hard to say it, it was just.. wow. There, gone. There, gone. LOL I'm glad I wasn't a secondary character in this book. ;) What I did like is the gore. No I'm not a weirdo, but I do like a good horror novel/movie, and this book was good on that aspect. More so than the show at times actually.

I enjoyed how the book got down to buisness and actually did feel like a Supernatural episode- most of the time. It was a good read, with a good plot, but I found something missing. Maybe it was the boys. They didn't feel excatly like the Sam and Dean we have grown to love, and I guess it just bothered me a little bit. Would I recommed this book to others? Yes and maybe. If you are a hardcore Supernatural fan like myself, I would recommend this book for sure. It's more Sam and Dean, what's not good about that? If your not so into the tv series, or you just think it's okay, then I would say it's up to you to read this. It's not a bad book at all, I actually enjoyed many parts, but it could be less pleasing to a regular Paranormal/Mystery reader.

First of I am a huge fan of the tv series Supernatural, that when I saw the first three novels at a bookstore I immediately grabbed them and giddily went to the cashier to buy them. Keith DE Candido's books were ok it reads more like a fan fiction than anything and especially in the first book he did not get Sam and Deans characterization but overall it is acceptable. But Jeff Mariote's book while I tried hard to finish it, starting it three times since buying it a few years ago I still could not get past chapter 2. I believe Mariotte is a good writer having read his CSI novel and I enjoyed it and it seems according to the reviews here the plot of Witch Canyon is actually better that De Candido's books but my one big beef with the story and the reason that I can't finish the book is his characterization of Dean in the book. I mean Dean always wanting somebody to tell him what to do? and Sam stepping in to fill the void their father left in Dean aka being his drill sergeant? I just can't get past that, when in the show one of Sam's beef with his brother is how Dean boss him around. Mariotte probably did not watch the show and since he was given a character of a good eldest son and soldier and his rebellious younger brother he went with it and created the characters in Witch Canyon. That is one thing wierd about their characters on the show is that Sam follows everybody except his father and Dean follows his father and leads everybody else. I guess if it is an original book I might have enjoyed it but now it just sits in my bookcase just to complete my collection of Supernatural novels.

When it comes to these Supernatural tie in novels, the most important thing I look for in everyone is that Sam and Dean sound like themselves. After that I focus on the story, the case, and the monster. Luckily, Witch's Canyon which is set in the second season does a very good job on all fronts. It's not the best of the tie in novels, but it's still a must read for fans of the series.

Between Jeff Mariotte and Keith DeCandido, I feel Mariotte has a better grasp on plot and setting. The descriptions are rich -- for a tv tie-in, that is -- and the zombies are varied, giving a unique set of dangers for each victim to face (the insect swarm was a personal favorite of mine). For those looking for horror-film amounts of gore, well, this book will probably please. In one of the later chapters, there's even a several-page montage of death scenes, each one different from the last. Points for creativity, at least.

Unfortunately, this is where Mariotte's talent ends, as Sam and Dean's characterization, dialogue, and general interactions with other characters feels stiff and at times out of character. I never got the sense that I was watching an actual episode of the show from this book, but instead was reading about two cookie-cutter generic guys that just happened to be named Sam and Dean, who happened to stumble upon a paranormal event. Indeed, the brothers seem to barely be involved with any of the goings-on in the book until the very end, instead listening to the town history as told by other characters, and tagging along for the ride.

If this had been an original novel, where Mariotte could have developed the characters into his own creations, this might have been a better book. As it stands, it reads like someone's first fanfiction.

I actually really liked this story, better than the first book in fact. I thought it was pretty awesome that you can't tell what exactly is going on for a really long time. It kept the case a real mystery and only made me want to read more and faster. The title may seem like a giveaway but I decided not to take that as a guarantee (I would personally love putting my readers onto the wrong track like that) and see for myself where it went. And boy, did it take me (and the Winchesters) a long time to figure it out. Kudos to Mariotte for creating such an original monster-of-the-week that I couldn't spot a single clue about what was causing the murders beforehand. And the way everything ended up tying together at the very end really caught me by surprise! Definitely didn't see that one coming!
So then why did I only give this three stars? The thing is, I would have given it four easily, but... there's a "but". Mostly, it annoyed the living crap out of me that the author kept calling Native Americans "Indians". For the love of Chuck that bothered me. There was also the other usual stereotyping that didn't add to my enthusiasm, but seeing how typical that is for the early seasons of SPN too, I can hardly blame him.

As a fan of the show, I walked away very disappointed in this attempt at a tie-in novel. The story itself dragged, and while the author was probably trying to fill a page count quota, it only managed to make the plot seem really uninteresting. Also, there were many instances where it felt like Dean and Sam's roles were mysteriously reversed. Their dialogue read as if they were saying each others lines. Maybe that's up to personal interpretation, but it left me wondering if the writer had even seen an episode of Supernatural before. So a very low score for this one.

OK first of all there was this one part in the book where this guy screwed up and called Dean,Sam and then when Sam corrected him he said that for some reason Sam looked like a Dean to him-and I just want to say that-i understood that reference.now on too the actual review.this book actually read like an episode of Supernatural!it had a kick ass case, the humor, the brotherly bond, and Sam and Dean actually felt like Sam and Dean!this is what I was hoping for when I read the first one.the only downside is I'm not sure I want to go to the Grand Canyon now! ;D

Would you believe I just started watching Supernatural? I'm just shy of being two decades late to the party, but now it's a party with 15 seasons that I can binge watch!

I was almost embarrassed to be reading this, but I wanted to dive into something that wasn't too deep and wouldn't require too much concentration. Like most fans, I read the book because - I have to admit - it's hard to get enough of Sam and Dean. I'm only five seasons into the show, and they already have my heart. I was hoping the book would mimic the protectiveness the boys have for each other, the adorable banter between the two, the humor, creepy "bad" characters, and a bit of action.

Sooooooooo how was it?

I mean...it actually wasn't too shabby! It was definitely better than I thought a paperback tie-in would be.

The dialogue wasn't always top notch, but there were still plenty of moments where I could hear the characters saying these lines and even chuckled a time or two. If I hadn't seen the show before reading the book and known how Dean and Sam usually speak and interact, some of it may have fallen a little flat. There were plenty of creepy bad characters committing gruesome murders and action. There was also a smidge of that protectiveness towards one another that I was glad to see brought up.

I thought the story was interesting with a whole slew of reanimated dead folks (plus shapeshifting!) although the mall bit (and the Mayor being SO adamant about its opening not being postponed) was a little hokey. I also felt like there could have been more Sam and Dean in the book; it seemed they were only present for about 1/3 of it.

3 Stars 'cause I actually liked it!

Again with the fangirlishness, it's hard not to like this book. For a tv-tie-in novel (is that what these things are called?), it's really not bad. Of course, tons of better fanfic out there (with tons more sex, too), but well, fangirl here, so I'm forgiving. Which means that I'll freely admit that I added one star just for the sheer prettiness that is SPN, because otherwise, two stars would really have been enough for this book.

Things I loved: Dean and Sam going to see the Grand Canyon (yay, normal stuff! Sightseeing! Remembering that really hot Dean/Castiel fic I read not too long ago where he kind of moves the Grand Canyon!)
Impala in the snow!
Plot, with tons of ghosts and supernatural creatures!
Hot gay sex!
Uhm, other things!

Things I didn't like so much:
Plot that involved tons of other people getting to know what the boys do.
Solution to plot that seemed kind of farfetched even for SPN (or maybe that's just because reading leaves you more time to think about how much these thigns really don't make sense)
No hot gay sex!
Other things.

So, if you just like the show and stumble across this in a bookstore, you may want to choose something else. If you are a fangirl, well you probably already own this, but you may want to just look at the cover from time to time and read some more fanfic instead. If you are a CRAZY fangirl (*hangs head in shame*), you will love this despite its weaknesses, so go ahead and read.

(plus, it's a book, and unlike most fanfic, you can carry it around and read it all over the place. That alone makes it worth buying.)

This is the second book in the Supernatural Book Series. Click here to see my review about the first book. First off I would like to point out that Jeff Mariotte's writing style is a huge improvement from the first book. The story is creepier too.

Sam and Dean take a detour to see the Grand Canyon. But any Supernatural fan should know that any detour has to mean they will find a new 'job.' Mysterious deaths start to occur left and right and the Winchester brothers are determined to stop them. Warning to readers: Do not get attached the other characters. Many do not make it. I won't say who but this book most assuredly had it's share of gory deaths.

The author does a good job with the story, but the Sam and Dean themselves seemed to need a bit or work. They came off as very forced at times. For a story on it's own, I enjoyed this but there were times I had a hard time envisioning the Winchester world. So for a creepy, supernatural thrill check this out. It can be read was part of the series or as a stand alone. Although I still recommend at least seeing the first several episodes of the tv series first. Enjoy!

Another sam and dean adventure. Travelling to the big town of ‘Cedar Wells’ they stumble upon a murder cycle which occurs every 40 years, the culprit a shapeshifting spirit.

I actually really enjoyed the storyline to this book, i was hooked in from the very beginning. Obviously love the characters, the winchester brothers will never fail to bring us a good paranormal adventure. The writing style was so atmospheric too, i felt like i was IN Cedar Wells and was experiencing everything alongside them.

If you’re a supernatural fan, definitely recommend checking out this one.

Let's see, it's a Supernatural book, so it already has my approval. However, the case although it was interesting I felt it was bad written. I would have liked a little more development of the origin of the creatures and the story itself. Also it bored me quite a bit that there were many parts of chapters telling me very specific things about the victims or people in town. On a few occasions it mentions training and situations with John Winchester that I consider super interesting, since the boys' childhood is not developed in detail in the series, and I feel it was very overlooked.

I'm not going to say I didn't love it, because I did. Any piece of Supernatural at all is near and dear to my heart, but this piece seems to go a bit against established rules for some of the creatures and lore. I wouldn't call it problematic, but against the grain. The counter spell was not in Latin as they usually are and I'm still unsure of exactly what the creatures exactly were.

Nevertheless, I still love the extention of the fandom.
