This is a short story of about 17,000 words, or 40—45 pages.
Emma Chase is the Caller of the Blood, chosen by fate and ancient magic to hold the power of all shapeshifting races in her hands. She’s held her own against monsters, gods, and even a bloodsucking ex-boyfriend, but none of that can help her when it comes to untangling the mysteries of her complicated bear warrior, Red Sun.
Please note, this is a short story set in the universe of the Wild Rites Saga, and as such it contains massive spoilers for the previous books.
The Bear’s Surrender takes place halfway between books 5 (The Raven Thief) and 6 (yet to be released) of The Wild Rites Saga. It contains massive spoilers for the previous books and features characters and relationships that may not make sense out of context. It also contains some steamy scenes. If that’s not your cup of tea, you don’t need to read this short story to understand the events of the next upcoming book.
Anna McIlwraith is the author of the urban fantasy series Caller of the Blood and the upcoming paranormal romance series Wayward Heart. She’s addicted to the mysterious power of using words to walk between worlds, and there’s nowhere she’d rather be than travelling the dusty roads and dark kingdoms of the worlds of her books. Sadly, one can visit those territories but never stay, which is the only reason Anna gets any reading of her own done.
When not reading or writing, Anna spends the rest of her free time in this dimension arguing with her cats and preparing for the zombie apocalypse. She lives near the sea in Victoria, Australia, where the weather is only slightly less hellish, but the wildlife is a lot less deadly.
Stubborn stubborn ancient bear ... FINALLY gets his head straight when it comes to our MC. Sexy times !!!! Hellooo!!!! This novella basically happened because mcbearface couldn’t get his shit together on page in book 5, he needed a hot minute to grasp the concept of “harem life”
Alexei really is the most amazing book boyfriend EVER !!!! Anna could have done more on page with the characters but there are fades to black which is frustrating. Still I love this story, Alexei is god level status of BBF....
our MC gives summer permission to find a partner for the walking god ... which is heart breaking oh telly ... how lost you are. Our author can’t do any wrong honestly I love this story. I cannot WAIT for the next book!!
I loved that we got to see more into the relationship in this short story. Emma is always so on point. So to see her take some time for her relationship is sweet. I have always loved Alexi. My complete favorite. But Red Sun has been a close second...I am so glad we got this book and it was just not assumed in book 6. Reccomend this whole series. And waiting for the next book.
More a teaser novella to tide us over until Book 6 comes out... but I was really happy to see more with Red Sun and have that relationship finally click into place. And for Emma to begin to come to terms with having a harem :)
I found this series a while back after getting sucked into the RH genre. I fell in love with the characters and the fact that there's always something going on. Then I got to the end of book 5 and started searching for when 6 would come out. *crickets* Couldn't find anything. I think maybe the last book had released a month or so before. I was so sad. So imagine my surprise when this bad boy popped up in my feed. Hells yeah! Super short but just what I needed to tide me over until book 6. Definitely tied up some lose ends that were hanging with Red Sun. Loved this and dying for book 6 now! I need my Fern back!
The Bear's Surrender was really just a teaser for the next book in the Wild Rites Saga, but it was so worth it. Just getting that sneak peak into what might happen in the next book has me craving for book 6. I'm definitely one-clicking!
Short story, a little sad as Red is so resistant to h. She is torn between her 2 men, needs them but feels weird about the polyamory. Red finally understands what h needs from him and it sets up well for the next book.
I enjoyed that short story and it got in nice and also explaining a few things. Ugh I can't wait to see who all is going to be apart of her harem. Can't wait for book 6!!! Love this series!
This is a reverse harem series! Why are we skipping the scene when the most anticipated part is about to happen?! Ughhhhh. This story also feels pivotal to the series and should have been together with 6!
Although we finally see Red Sun and Emma get together by the end as expected, there was a bit too much of polyamory resistance rehashing in the novella for my taste. Additionally, the concept of formal "mate bonds" introduced in this novella was a bit off-putting - we went through so many novels without mentioning this common PNR trope! I liked the relationships better when they had the option to "choose" to break up rather than relying on some metaphysical bond to keep them together.
It was an enjoyable short read overall, but I would have preferred either just a plain up quick intimate scene resolution without all the repeated angst.
This short story was so absolutely AMAZING! I've been hoping for more Red Sun time! This was a perfect little "snack" before book 6! I'm not so patiently waiting for that release!!
Loved it! Red finally got his head out of his behind and Alexi was his usual awesomeness. Short and steamy, great filler while waiting for the next installment.
What happened to Fern? Did Emma ever release the part of her heart she locked away? What happened to Alan and his cohorts? Where are the hybrids? Where is Horne/Keti? It's been too long a while.
