A Árvore dos Desejos é o único livro infantil de William Faulkner e terá sido escrito pouco depois da publicação do seu primeiro romance, A Recompensa do Soldado (1926). Onírica e poética, a história, com personagens que encolhem, árvores que detêm poderes mágicos ou póneis que saem de uma sacola, antecipa vários recursos narrativos e estilísticos do romance mais célebre do autor, O Som e a Fúria (1929). A 5 de fevereiro de 1927, Faulkner ofereceu um exemplar de A Árvore dos Desejos, datilografado e encadernado por si, à pequena Victoria Franklin, que celebrava nesse dia o oitavo aniversário.Victoria era filha de Estelle Oldham, uma antiga namorada de adolescência por quem o escritor continuava apaixonado, a ponto de, insistentemente, tentar convencê-la a pôr termo ao casamento infeliz e a casar-se com ele, o que veio a conseguir em 1929. No entanto, até à morte de Faulkner, em 1962, a história nunca foi publicada. Em 1964, a Random House divulgou finalmente o texto que ficara na posse de Victoria, num livro-objeto magnificamente ilustrado por Don Bolognese com tiragem limitada de quinhentos exemplares. Seguiu-se, em 1967, uma edição convencional, também ela há muito esgotada, que serviu de base a esta primeira edição portuguesa.

About the author

William Cuthbert Faulkner was an American writer. He is best known for his novels and short stories set in the fictional Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi, a stand-in for Lafayette County where he spent most of his life. A Nobel laureate, Faulkner is one of the most celebrated writers of American literature and often is considered the greatest writer of Southern literature.
Faulkner was born in New Albany, Mississippi, and raised in Oxford, Mississippi. During World War I, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, but did not serve in combat. Returning to Oxford, he attended the University of Mississippi for three semesters before dropping out. He moved to New Orleans, where he wrote his first novel Soldiers' Pay (1925). He went back to Oxford and wrote Sartoris (1927), his first work set in the fictional Yoknapatawpha County. In 1929, he published The Sound and the Fury. The following year, he wrote As I Lay Dying. Later that decade, he wrote Light in August, Absalom, Absalom! and The Wild Palms. He also worked as a screenwriter, contributing to Howard Hawks's To Have and Have Not and The Big Sleep, adapted from Raymond Chandler's novel. The former film, adapted from Ernest Hemingway's novel, is the only film with contributions by two Nobel laureates.
Faulkner's reputation grew following publication of Malcolm Cowley's The Portable Faulkner, and he was awarded the 1949 Nobel Prize in Literature for "his powerful and unique contribution to the modern American novel." He is the only Mississippi-born Nobel laureate. Two of his works, A Fable (1954) and The Reivers (1962), won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Faulkner died from a heart attack on July 6, 1962, following a fall from his horse the month before. Ralph Ellison called him "the greatest artist the South has produced".

فکرش رو هم نمی‌کردم پشت اون فاکنری که توی خشم‌ و هیاهو همچون بلایی سر زمان و نثر می‌آره، یه فاکنری وجود داشته باشه که یه داستان کودکانه رولددال‌طوری نوشته باشه در مورد یه دختری به اسم دالسی که تو روز تولدش از خواب بیدار می‌شه و راهی یه ماجراجویی خیالی پر از برآورده شدن آرزوها می‌شه.

”On the night before your birthday if you get into bed left foot first and turn the pillow over before you go to sleep, anything might happen”So begins the magical, whimsical tale The Wishing Tree by none other than the great William Faulkner. Dulcie, a young girl, wakes on her birthday to find a mysterious stranger in her room who whisks her, the other children, the maid Alice, and a 92 year old man away on a magical adventure full of wishes come true. This rare book is actually quite good as far as short children’s stories go and shows Faulkner in a unique form as he wrote it as a gift to the 8 year old daughter of a friend.

Who knew Faulkner wrote a children’s novel? I had never heard of this, so, Faulkner being a major idol of mine, I was surprised and delighted when I found it at random on the wrong shelf of The Dawn Treader Used Bookstore in Ann Arbor, Mi this past weekend in perfect condition, dust jacket and all, for under $10. I hastily picked it up and read the jacket to make sure that this actually was THE William Faulkner as it seemed unlikely he had written such a book. This story, weighing in at only 82 pages, existed as just one copy that belonged to little Victoria until it was slightly edited, garnished with the beautiful illustrations of Don Bolognese in 1967 and received an actual publication by Random House. It was written in 1927, which places it sometime around the time he wrote his second novel Mosquitoes.
The Wishing Tree is very playful and funny and shows a different side of Faulkner than is commonly seen. However, it is distinctly the words of the master, as the opening paragraph will show:

She was still asleep but she could feel herself rising up out of sleep, just like a balloon: it was like she was a goldfish in a round bowl of sleep, rising and rising through the warm waters of sleep to the top. And then she would be awake

Also, the servant woman speaks in dialect which shows off what Faulkner would polish in later novels. Alice often speaks as such: ”The one that run off on me and lef’ me payin’ a lawyer to fin’ out what the gov’ment down with him. Him and his army! I’ll war him: he ain’t never seen no war like what I can aggrovoke.” As with all his adult works (strange I would ever have to make that distinction while talking about Faulkner), there are underlying themes about the post-civil war South to be found in this story amidst the magic and wishing.

This book is perfect for any collection of Faulkner, or for any fan of Faulkner who would like to see a different early side of him. This works for me but the real excitement I felt when finding this was knowing that I can read it to my daughter when she is older and introduce her father’s favorite author at a much younger age, seeing as I am not subjecting something like Absalom! on her when she gets to be 8. I'm not quite sure how to rate a book like this but I'm going to say 4/5

אותה אליס היא דמות פארודית ונוקדנית, מעצבנת ונודניקית של אליס מארץ הפלאות.

"בחיים שלי לא ראיתי חייל שניצח במשהו במלחמה. מצד שני, מלחמות של אנשים לבנים בדרך כלל מתנהלות באופן מוזר. בפעם הבאה שללבנים תהיה מלחמה, נראה לי שאנ'לא הולך. נראה לי שבמקום זה אני פשוט אשאר היכן שאני נמצא.“

קשה לי להאמין שילד שיקרא את הספר באמת יפנים את המסרים של פוקנר, חלקם אירוניים ומצביעים על מחלות חברתיות כמו: סקסיזם וגזענות וחלקם מכוונים לעקרונות שלומדים אותם מניסיון כמו "היזהר במשאלותיך". לפעמים אגדה היא רק אגדה וכך צריך לקרוא אותה.

دولسی روز تولدش از خواب بیدار می‌شه و پسری عجیب و موقرمز رو می‌بینه که می‌خواد اون رو به دیدن درخت آرزو ببره. توی این راه با چند نفر دیگه هم همراه می‌شن و سفری کوتاه رو شکل می‌دن.

فاکنر این کتاب خیلی خیلی کوتاه رو بدون هدف چاپ و برای نوه‌اش نوشته و بعد یکی تصویرگری‌ش کرده. تصویرها جذاب‌ان و داستان کتاب هم ارزش یک بار خوندن داره، اما دقیقا شبیه وقتیه که کنار یه بچه می‌نشینی و سعی می‌کنی براش داستان تعریف کنی و به زور از دلش یک نکته‌ی اخلاقی بیرون بکشی.
با این حال تصویری که از داستان توی ذهن شکل می‌گیره قویه و داستان فضایی جادویی و رویایی داره، یه لقمه‌ی کوچیک جادویی برای روح‌های جادوطلب.

Nu știu de ce nu este apreciata mai mult aceasta poveste. Mi s-a părut ca este plina de semnificații, amuzantă, inteligentă.
Pe drumul spre marea dorință, una vagă, inexprimată, încercăm o mulțime de alte mici dorințe, unele nătângi, altele copilărești, multe egoiste și necugetate, o parte inofensive, altele periculoase, dar niciuna prea înțeleaptă. Fiecare dorința ridica o serie de probleme, de dileme sau chiar de bucluc și toate îndepărtează personajele de scopul inițial. Sunt de găsit aici câte ceva despre curaj, despre loialitate, despre atașament. Adulții sunt comici și copiii inocenți. Lumea este clar a lui Faulkner, graiul tot al lui. Visul e asa cum îi șade bine, cu un picior pe pământ și cu altul în lumea tuturor posibilităților, el amestecă realitatea și imposibilul și scoate la iveală ceea ce dorim mai mult sa se petreacă de-adevăratelea.

‫این کتاب رو وقت دبستانی بودم خوندم و یادمه از اون کتاب‌هایی بود که خیلی دوستش داشتم و همیشه برام امکانی برای خیالپردازی به وجود می‌آورد. به صورت اتّفاقی چند روز پیش پیداش کردم توی وسایل قدیمی و دوباره برای لحظاتی برگشتم به دوران بچّگی. گرچه احتمالاُ خلاف خیلی از شمایی که این نوشته رو می‌خونید، اصلاً دوست ندارم دوباره برگردم به اون زمان ((:

O Faulkner colocou o seu coração nesta pequena história - e ainda bem que o fez, porque nos permitiu, assim, aumentar o nosso.
Devíamos todos ler mais livros infantis. Estes que nos lembram porque é que começámos a ler em primeiro lugar, e que nos dão vontade de perpetuar o vício. De ler aos outros e de os fazer crer - como nós já cremos outrora- na fantasia e na maravilha da magia.

William Faulkner wrote one children's book. Never intended for publication, it found its way into print following his death. It fits the fantasy genre. Dulcie awoke on her birthday to find a red-headed boy in her room. She soon goes on a journey with neighbors to find the wishing tree. This one encourages children to make unselfish wishes. Saint Francis of Assisi makes an appearance. While Faulkner's fans will probably enjoy this tale, its language dates it, losing its appeal to twenty-first century young readers. (3.5 stars)

It's definitely Faulkner and definitely not PC. Yet, this quirky quick read delivers moral lessons for young readers. Given that it was written back in 1927, I can't fault Faulkner's use of southern dialect in the voices of two characters, but it doesn't play too well in today's sensitive world.

I enjoyed the journey and the moral lessons contained therein.

Deve haver uma razão para nunca termos ouvido falar deste livro infantil, da autoria de um dos mais conhecidos autores americanos e vencedor do Prémio Nobel da Literatura... Eu penso ter detectado várias! A começar com o misterioso surgimento de um rapaz no quarto de uma rapariga que estava até àquele momento a dormir, passando pela violência doméstica perpetrada por duas mulheres contra os seus maridos, assim como maus tratos a animais (com chicotadas a póneis e ameaças de caça a esquilos e pássaros).
Enfim, um livro infantil, fruto da sua época, cheio de apontamentos que hoje em dia seriam mais do que politicamente incorrectos.
Não acho que seja uma história fantástica nem que esteja magistralmente bem escrita. No fim, lá se tenta dar uma redenção e uma lição moral (a de que, se tratarmos de seres indefesos, não somos capazes de cometer acções egoístas... sim, claro...), mas fortemente cristã, pois transmitida por um dos santos mais famosos do cristianismo (S.Francisco)... Enfim, este livro lê-se bem, mas não creio que seja propriamente uma obra-prima...

Детска книга! „Дървото на желанията” била подарък за 8-годишно момиченце, дъщеря на бъдещата му съпруга. Дали авторът е подозирал, че един ден поучителната му приказка ще бъде издадена и ще представлява своеобразна литературна рядкост, предизвикваща любопитството на възрастните и усмивките на децата? Дори и да му е минало през ума, то едва ли е подозирал, че почти век по-късно „Дървото на желанията” ще бъде издадена в далечна България с прелестните илюстрации на Калина Мухова? А логото върху корицата, разбира се, е това на изд. „Лист” – специалисти в подбирането на „Детски шедьоври от велики писатели”. Bir yazarla -üstelik gözünüzü korkutan bir yazarsa- tanışmanın en iyi yolu, çocuklar için yazdığı şeyleri okumaktır. W.Faulkner benim hem çok merak ettiğim hem de çok çekindiğim bir yazardı; ancak, bu masal kitabıyla bile ününün hakkını verdiğini anlamak hiç zor olmadı. Çocuklar için alınması gereken mesajlar ve büyükler için tam bir edebi şölen olması, kitabın cazibesini arttırır nitelikte. Bu kısacık resimli öyküyü mutlaka okumanızı tavsiye ederim. =)

Un nonno che scrive una storia per una nipotina è un cosa di enorme dolcezza; se poi il nonno in questione è William Faulkner, allora, questa storia, bisogna proprio leggerla - e in un baleno!
Ogni bambina o bambino – e oserei estendere il concetto anche ai non bambini - vorrebbe vivere le avventure di Dulcie, la piccola buona protagonista che il giorno del suo compleanno si sveglia e, ad accoglierla nella sua stanza, trova un bambino con i capelli rossi che le prospetta grandi avventure. E Dulcie che fa? Lo segue in un viaggio che diventa scoperta e insegnamento. Tra nonsense e colori, un'eco di Lewis Carroll risuona tra le pagine, ma l'epilogo, che prende una piega spirituale, è tutt'altro che scontato.

Naquela que é a única obra que William Faulkner escreveu para crianças “A Árvores dos Desejos” é problematizado o modo como nos relacionamos com o que desejamos, o modo como as nossas ações condicionam a vida no presente e no futuro.

(nota pessoal) num dia cheio de toxicidade junto a mim ler este livro foi a leitura perfeita para descobrir o que (e quem) é mesmo importante para nós.


Escrita em 1927, e publicada em 1964 numa edição limitada com as belíssimas ilustrações de Don Bolognese, esta obra mostra-nos um outro lado desse nome cimeiro da literatura norte-americana qe foi William Faulkner.

Uma menina, no seu aniversário, é visitada por um rapaz de cabelo ruivo e poderes mágicos chamado Maurice. Os dois, juntamente ao irmão mais novo da menina e a ama de ambos(negra, é claro!), partem numa aventura na procura da mítica “árvores dos desejos”. Nessa procura, nesse caminho místico entram um árvores sujas folhas brancas assumem diferentes cores quando tocadas. E assim este grupo - a que se vão juntando outras personagens – entram numa aventura em que vão percebendo o poder que temos ao construir e verbalizar os nossos desejos.
Nesta história em jeito de fábula percebemos que ‘se formos carinhosos e ternurentos com as “coisas”, e as pessoas, poderemos ter direito a que os nossos desejos se tornem realidade’. Fica a lição?

Esta leitura foi feita no âmbito do clube #donaleitura, dinamizado pela @cat.classics , que no mês de fevereiro nos propôs um retorno à infância com a leitura de obras de literatura juvenil. Se no início do mês li poesia infantil de Manuel António Pina (integrado igualmente na iniciativa #guardalivros do @2bejay ), a hipótese de ler esta obra de Faulkner foi perfeita.

En el viaje fantástico de la pequeña Dulcie, guiada por el feérico Dickie, y acompañada por sus hermanos Georgie y Dicky, y su nodriza negra Alice, es imposible no dejar de ver un contratipo de las aventuras tan llenas de peligro y de falta de inocencia de los Compsons, cuando eran niños, de The Sound and the Fury: de la indómita Caddy, de los hermanos Jason y Quentin y del pequeño retrasado Benjy, y de la visión distante y dolida de la criada negra Dalsy, la que lo vio todo.
Una obra menor de Faulkner, en que el intento de narrar con una sintaxis simple y repleta de hechos tan maravillosos como cotidianos queda eclipsado por su gran y trágica novela.

Bir çocuk kitabını bitirdikten sonra tüylerim diken diken hissedeceğim hiç aklıma gelmezdi.

Kötü duyguların büyümesini engelleyen ve biraz hristiyan inancı'nın etkisi görülen bir çocuk kitabı. Aşırı bağnaz değilseniz korkulacak hiçbir şey yok. Öğrenmenin yaşı yoktur düsturunda belki sizi bile tetikleyebilecek bir kitap.
William Faulkner 'büyük adam' kalıbını tekrar hissettirdi.

Kitap biraz Alice Harikalar Diyarında'yı anımsattı. Çocuk kitaplarını okumayı seven biri olarak kitap ilgilimi çekmedi. Bitirdiğimde beklediğimi bulamadığım bir kitap oldu. Hikaye yarım yamalak yazılmış gibi. Kitabın başında buna istinaden bir uyarı bulunmaktaydı, dikkate alarak okumanızı tavsiye ederim.

Finally! A Faulkner that I really like! This was a sweet fairy tale and I giggled at the fact that the goofy old man was named Mr. Egbert. I especially appreciated how Faulkner incorporated both a sense of his beloved South and Saint Francis. Many great ideas to discuss with a child if the two of you read this one together.

I doubt you will find this on the bookshelves of children's libraries today. I found it stuck in with the other great Faulkner tomes in my local library. A short little read---if you will, a Southern Alice in Wonderland. Of course it is brilliant; isn't everything by Faulkner brilliant? This was the only children's book he ever wrote and it was personally written and bound for an eight year old for her birthday and never meant to be published. It is rare and out of print--you can still procure it on the Kindle, but that rather defeats the purpose, no? A rare copy of it is very expensive. Can't wait for my kids to get their first taste of the magic prose of Faulkner via this book.

Étrange livre que cet Arbre aux souhaits. Il y a du Alice aux pays des Merveilles dedans, car on évolue dans un monde incohérent, où les lois de la physique ne s’appliquent pas. Quelques astuces d’écriture qui permettent à la narration de couler d’incohérences en incohérences : « il y avait » et « et » qui sont répétés à l’envi. Intéressant mais je ne sais pas si j’ai aimé : trop de ressemblances avec Alice, un univers déstabilisant et une écriture trop mécanique...
