2nd Managing type 1 diabetes during pregnancy is an incredibly overwhelming yet rewarding pursuit. It's about so much more than just counting your carbs and getting exercise. Due to constantly increasing hormones during pregnancy, your insulin needs constantly change, too. While no two women's pregnancies will be alike, the timing of those anticipated insulin adjustments will be similar. In this book, Ginger Vieira and Jennifer Smith, CDE & RD, guide you through preparing for pregnancy, from conception to birth, and through the challenges of managing your blood sugars during postpartum.
Ginger Vieira has lived with type 1 diabetes and celiac disease since 1999. She is a certified cognitive coach, personal trainer, Ashtanga yoga instructor, and set 15 records in drug-free powerlifting during 2009 and 2010. Today, Ginger works with people of all ages across the globe as a Wellness & Diabetes Coach in her own business, Living in Progress. Also the author of Your Diabetes Science Experiment, Ginger has a B.S. in Professional Writing from Champlain College, and writes regularly for the greater diabetes community providing motivation, support, and occasionally, a good laugh about a very serious disease.
Started reading this before I was pregnant and found it sooo helpful in preparing for pregnancy and knowing what I could expect month by month. Only gripe was the authors felt waaayyyy strict about their T1D..like girlie Greek yogurt is not the devil and I am drinking Diet Coke and I am ~not ashamed~
The mom’s stories at the end kinda stressed me out too so we ended up skipping some of those. But majority of the book was extremely helpful for T1D mamas!
Highly recommend even if you never plan to get pregnant! I learned so much about my T1D throughout the course of this book. Has completely changed my life and the way I manage my T1D. I was diagnosed as an adult and have been living with T1D for 15 years. In just a few short months, I’ve made significant improvement not just in my daily blood sugar levels but my confidence in managing the unexpected and giving myself grace on this learning journey. The knowledge gained has improved my physical and mental health and even my outlook on life with T1D. I know pregnancy will come with its own set of challenges but I feel so much more competent and confident entering that path thanks to this book. Thank you to all the T1D moms who came before me.
I’m so happy to have found this book. I’m not pregnant yet, but this book has already made me feel more prepared for pregnancy with type 1 diabetes.
The authors take great care in giving as much information as possible down to explaining carb to insulin ratios, preparing yourself for pregnancy to breastfeeding.
I also appreciate the authors are type 1 diabetes mothers and that just gave me more comfort knowing that the person writing these words has felt the way I do and have had similar thoughts and fears but have had their own successful pregnancies.
I would recommend an woman contemplating conceiving to read this book.
Informative as far as what to expect with the pregnancy and good tips on diet. I wish there was more targeted info on Type 1 diabetes. For example, more specifics on how glucose levels change, more current approaches to management (got scale CGM/ pump use), etc. Overall, I'm glad to have the info though, thank you!
There was a bit of redundant information, however the bulk of this book was very helpful and informative for type one diabetics. I learned a great deal from this book, and I think the tips in this book are relevant even outside of pregnancy. Would absolutely read prior to trying!
