TAKODA tied the last of his gear on the back of his ATV and climbed on. He started the engine and took off, away from the clearing that housed his trailer, down the bumpy drive. He was happy and the only thing that stopped an ear-to-ear grin was the thought of bugs in his teeth. He’d gotten a good job here on the reservation, doing web design. His supervisor was a white guy who’d been officially accepted into the tribe. Bryce was a good guy, who took the time to steer Takoda onto the right path without being bossy. Yes, everything was going his way, at least for now. Growing up on the reservation, Takoda knew to celebrate the good and make the best of the bad. Before landing this job, it seemed he’d spent a lot of time dealing with the bad.
Takoda rode for a while, leaving the central reservation area behind and heading out into the canyons. After an entire week of working with other people, he needed some time outdoors and alone. His destination was a campsite that friends of his had set up near the rim. He only hoped he got there before they did. Takoda gunned the engine and flew over the trail as he approached his destination.
This won't take long to read, but it's worth making time to enjoy the sense of place and gentle prose. A young Lakota man drives up the mountain for a camp over the weekend, but ends up finding a more reliable way to travel. Is it true that a great man deserves a great horse, but the horse must do the choosing?
Andrew Grey often writes gay romances, set in various communities, but this short story is suitable for any reader.
This is a great short story about Takoda, one of the main characters of The Fight for Identity (which I have yet to read). It sets the scene nicely, and references some of the characters from the first two books - which I loved.
Takoda grew up on the reservation, and has a job doing web design for Bryce (from book two), but he also loves his little retreats into nature for the occasional weekend away from people. On one of these trips he finds a trapped horse and frees it, only to have the animal return to him later.
As short as this story is, it's great at conveying the mood of the other books in this series, as well as showing Takoda's character. And it's free, so perfect if you want to see if you might like this series.
I know, I have problems with Grey's writing so I should have known this was a failure to me. But anyway I read and am really not so impressed. 2 stars.
This is the sweet story of how Horse claimed Takoda. You can read this story before book three of the Good Fight series if you want because it doesn't give anything away from the series. However, you will understand the context of the story a little better if you read it as the fourth story. If you click on the AMAZON link it will give you the option to buy the kindle version for free.
A really great series - all with interesting and sexy MC's in each one - Whew! There are 3 novels and a short story - they could probably be stand-alones but are so good, I suggest them all.
This is book #4 (which is the short story and the other 3 are novels). It is the story about Takoda (MC in book #3) and how he meets his horse - no romance and no spoilers so I suggest reading it after book #2, before book #3, because chronologically, that is how it happens but it doesn't really matter.
Nice little short story to be read as a supplement to The Fight for Identity. This can be read as a prequel or a sequel, it doesn't matter but, by all means, read it as it's the story of how Takoda met Horse, or vice versa.
I loved this shorty! Sweet horse choosing to be with the man who saved him. Takoda, a true spiritual man who is in tune with nature. Who can ask for a more compelling pair! Now, to get the rest of the series! Gotta LOVE Andrew's writing!
A short story centered on Takoda and his horse 'Horse' from the fight for identity. Its very sweet and gives insight of how their companionship came to be. Also have some characters from the previous books.
I don’t know why Amazon made this book 4 when it obviously takes place before the most of ‘The Fight for Identity’. Takoda didn’t have the horse, that he named Horse, when first met Will. I think this book should have been labelled as book 2.5. sigh
