The trans-national MURKOFF CORPORATION tirelessly pushes the frontier of scientific research and development. Partnering with the greatest minds of tomorrow, Murkoff expands the reach of every branch of scientific inquiry, including gene therapy, behavioral psychology, information technology, and medicine.
In the event of mistake or oversight, the MURKOFF INSURANCE MITIGATION DEPARTMENT comes in to minimize economic fallout. Mitigation Officers are damage control. They are not here to save lives or help people, they are here to make sure it doesn’t cost the company any more than it has to.
Paul Marion and Pauline Glick are recovering after the former sabotaged Murkoff. While Marion is telling his story to the FBI after giving himself up, Glick is helping Murkoff find her former colleague. They start at the beginning of their work together, back in late 2008, when they investigated the Hatbox Murders among the patients of a Murkoff institution, the Spindeltop Psychotherapy Clinic for Iraq veterans in Hattin, Texas.
Besides writing children's books, Petty is also a director and screenwriter for movies and video games. His film Soft for Digging was an Official Selection of the Sundance Film Festival. He received a Game Developers Choice Award for his work on the bestselling video game Splinter Cell. JT lives in Brooklyn, New York.
I'm surprising myself by reading a comic that fits along a survival horror video game. But I was brushing up on Wikia, and there were a lot citations to these "Murkoff Account" sources and they turned out to be comics. Six of them. This is bizarrely exciting. I love piecing together story elements not fully explored in games.
This one covers the start of the Pauls and the origin of Chris Walker. It's short, but interesting. And the art style is vague like viewing through a windshield in a rain storm, so it's of a "it was a dark and stormy night" mold and not near as horrifying as the actual game.
If you're into Outlast (the video games), then I might recommend this to you, because there are some things that are filled in as far as the strangeness of Murkoff and some background with Chris Walker.
Go play the Whistleblower DLC instead of reading this.
I went into reading these issues thinking they'd clear fog regarding some central characters but not only was this not the case, the story was poor and badly-written.
Since its interest in the Mount Massive Asylum as is learned in the original games, the infamous Murkoff Corporation worked tirelessly conducting experiments on patients to create a host for their swarm of nanites (The Wallrider). The mentioning of MK Ultra was only natural at this point, and helped clarify the essence of the program.
This isn't something mentioned in the comic issues. How very sad.
On another note, the choice of artwork is befitting — silhouettes are vague, character faces are diffused, almost grotesque. The use of sketch and monotones greatly enhanced the propagated eerie feeling.
We get to experience the stories of the Murkoff Insurance Mitigation Office first-hand, whose main interest is to minimize economic fallout. Oh, goodie! Too bad it felt like two rookie cops getting themselves into a lot of trouble.
It's short but interesting. If you enjoyed the first Outlast game then you'll enjoy this if you want more lore surrounding The Murkoff Corporation and Chris Walker.
Part 1 definitely tugged at my heart strings, especially how Chris's facial expressions were drawn. He seemed so lost and distraught. He definitely wasn't in his right mind when he committed those murders.
"... Why are the killers always angry toddlers?"
Got me good. Because, hey, Paul's right.
Seeing Chris before he became a variant, coupled with him clutching his pig stuffed animal was just oof emotionally.
I removed one star because I'm not the biggest fan of the art style. It's very sketchy. It seems lazy to only leave the drawings with the few hasty lines in most of the comic. You can have a sketchy art style and still not make it look like you banged the entire thing out in one coffee-addled night sesh.

While the art is sometimes hard to follow the storyline is great so far. If you’ve played or watched someone play Outlast, Whistleblower and Outlast 2 and you’d like to know more about the lore and story of the series take a look at these. They fill in backstory and also should explain what happened between Whistleblower and the second game. There’s also a series of graphic novels for Outlast Trials, that I haven’t watched a playthrough of yet but am interested to find more lore in.
Nice read if you liked Outlast and want to know more about the story, as it's basically a way to fill the gaps left by the games. You can see the origin of iconic characters, what happened to the protagonists after their games, and even some sort of epilogue for Outlast 2, although there are many things that are left unanswered, so they'll probably do a sequel to these comics as a tie-in for Outlast 3 if that ever comes to fruition.
I don't know what took me so damn long to read these, but they definitely make me dislike the narrative jump between Outlast 1 and Outlast 2. If only these had been more highly publicized when the game came out. I'm always fascinated by people that are 'fixers' for huge corporations and honestly, Murkoff feels absolutely believable in the world we're living in today.
As far as I know, the first volume of The Murkoff Account works as an introduction. It tells you about various characters and gives you background information about the early days of the Murkoff Corporation and some incidents that occurred around this time.
massive fan of the outlast franchise - i highly recommend giving the comics a read if you want more updates about the lore, post 1st and second game, and even comics surrounding the new trials game!!!!!
