This is a very scenic book, set up on Lake Superior and in the charming little town of Bayfield. The characters are complex, frustrating and ultimately endearing -- especially Kacie, the main character who has had too much tragedy in her life and is searching for family. Many adults in the town help her fill that void. She rings true as a pre-teen, making some incredibly bad decisions, but also exhibiting a lot of courage and fortitude. This is an action-packed read and one that both adults and young adults will enjoy. It will also appeal to those who love sailing and being out on Lake Superior around the Apostle Islands.

I always enjoy reading the Star Tribune's serialized novels every summer, and that's true of this book, too. Fredericksen offers enough suspense, intrigue and characters to keep me reading.

The character of the Pirate is inspired (Life of Pi fans will appreciate him, too.) But, and this is a big but, I hated, hated, hated Kacie, who was described as being 12. Most of her actions and her emotions were those of an 18- or 20-year-old, not a preteen. This is a huge problem because Kacie is one of two main characters.

Still, if you like sailing or if you appreciate Minnesota settings, you'll probably like this book.

This was a serial that ran daily in the paper over 2 months. Definitely the best they have published so far. A bit of fluff, and ultimely predictable. But good never the less particularly if you live in Minnesota.

As a sailor on Lake Superior I thought I was in for a good read. Alas, it was a totally let down and disappointment. A plot that was weak and characters not much better.
