The Chronicles of Brother Hermitage #8

The Case of The Curious Corpse

Rate this book
More medieval crime comedy; the genre that hides in the bushes and makes strange noises.

Brother Hermitage is compelled to yet another investigation by the sight of a most curious corpse. Helpful compulsion also comes in the shape of a dozen well-armed Norman soldiers and the King’s man Le Pedvin, who will probably stab him if he doesn’t get on with it.

Clearly this a Very Important Victim.

Suspicions are raised by a host of fascinating characters, including Hereward the Wake, all of whom claim to have loved the victim dearly, but who all benefit from the death in one way or another.
It’s also a bit odd that King William insists that he is not to blame, despite boasting about being the killer of an awful lot of other people.
On top of all that there is even a rival for the role of Investigator. As Hermitage doesn’t want to be an investigator that’s good, isn’t it?
Ploughing in with Wat and Cwen at his back, side and sometimes in front, Brother Hermitage relies on his well established methodology (hoping something occurs to him at the last minute). With all that's going on around this particular death, that might not be enough...

The mysteries of Brother Hermitage have been variously described as “hilarious”, “laugh out loud funny”, “side-splitting”, and “stupid” - which is a bit of mystery in its own right. Go on, give it a try….

Howard of Warwick

Howard of Warwick is but a humble chronicler with the blind luck to stumble upon manuscripts which describe the goings-on of Brother Hermitage and his companion Wat the weaver.

His work has been heard, seen and read, most of it accompanied by laughter and some of it by money. His peers have even seen fit to recognize his unworthy efforts with a prize for making up stories.

There are now eighteen - make that twenty - novels of Brother Hermitage, the most medieval of detectives, loose on the world and they have found considerable success with the buying public.

The most recent outpouring from the scriptorium is The King's Investigator Part II.

Tales of Hermitage continue to flow forth with few checks for accuracy. There are even short stories available for free.

I love Brother Hermitage and crew, and these books just keep getting better and better. This tale had all the adventure as the previous novels, a new visitor who was unique and great, as well as the usual team, but the writing is the best yet in the series. It made me laugh as always, but beyond the comedy and hijinks, the author has really made me care about these characters and that's why I keep coming back to them. I recommend the Hermitage books to all my friends who love Terry Pratchett and Monty Python because they are worthy inheritors of those traditions.

Howard has written another great comical story of the exploits of Brother Hermitage and crew. King William, La Pedvin join in the adventure along with Mademoiselle La Pedvin as the crew tries to find the killer of a Saracen hostage murdered while under William's care. It's a fun read as Hermitage, Wat, and Cwen try to solve the crime and stay alive.

Big fan

Howard is a genius. I only wish that there were more HISTORIANS of his calibre around when the Normans invaded, us Saxons might have laughed more.

Yet More abject Hilarilty

Fun stuff, this time with a visiting Saracen investigator! Good historical details so one can convince oneself it's a protein bar and not a chocie.
