Dan Taylor has more lives than the proverbial cat. I lost count of how many times someone tried to kill him in his book but he kept on bouncing back. He also endures amazing injuries without going to hospital, though that may be because on the one occasion he does he nearly gets murdered there too.
Like many novels in this genre though it just requires the reader to suspend belief and go with the flow and everything is great! I like Dan Taylor and the rest of his team, and enjoy how smart they all are - always smarter than the average guy and usually one step ahead. I was totally confused by most of the politicking though and by the end I had no idea who, if anyone, was a good guy. Apart from Dan of course.
The ending was brilliant and left me wanting to move on to the next book as soon as possible.
Well researched and cleverly plotted Three Lives Down is a tension filled political thriller laced with mystery, intrigue, double crossing, Government cover-ups and secrets. Right from the first page I was hanging on every word. The fear was real and it had my heart racing. A gripping story with a couple of unexpected twists and turns thrown in make this novel unputdownable. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good political thriller.
With my thanks to the author for my copy to read and review.
When Dan Taylor discovered that radioactive isotope had been stolen from a secure government site, and three men had been murdered, he was astounded. How had it happened? Unable to locate team members Mitch and David, Dan decided to do some investigation on his own. And his findings that there was enough isotope missing to make a dirty bomb had him shuddering. It was obviously the work of terrorists, but who? Which group?
Unsure who to trust, Dan enlisted the help of IT expert Mel and reporter girlfriend Sarah. Between them they were able to uncover a devastating plot aimed at the British government. But how to prove what they knew to be truth? They knew there were people out there who would stop at nothing to achieve their goals. And when suddenly disaster struck, the circumstances changed in a heartbeat.
How was Dan to save his country? Where were Mitch and David – he needed their expertise. And would he survive; was his life on the line this time?
Wow! Full on action from the very first page! The first chapter of Three Lives Down had me holding my breath in anticipation of what was to happen next! What an opening! Aussie author Rachel Amphlett writes up a storm of a thriller – she is on top of her game and her writing only gets better! An extremely fast paced novel, brilliant plot and tightly woven, well developed characters – Three Lives Down has it all. I have no hesitation in recommending this, the 3rd in the Dan Taylor series very highly, and am keen for the next!
With thanks to the author for my copy to read and review.
My View: A surprisingly good novel! Surprised – yes I was – very pleasantly so. I am sorry to say I had not come across Aussie author Rachel Amphlett before and didn’t really know what I might find when I opened this book. When I decide to read a new author there is always a little trepidation involved - will the book live up to my expectations – and those expectations are pretty high? I wasn’t disappointed. What a great read it was.
Despite not having read the first two books in the series I had no problem relating to the main characters or understanding the situations they found themselves in. I was quickly enmeshed in this read.
The action is fast paced, the tone tense and the situations highly credible. I loved that Rachel wove a sub story about fracking into this mix - the world really does need to know about and understand the potential problems that relate to this practice and the situation in this novel is very sensitively and powerfully delivered without hysteria or emotional blackmail. Great work Rachel. I am no fan of fracking and I do not apologise for my view.
Back to the novel:
Fast paced √ Action packed √ Realistic scenarios √ Settings vivid and visual√ Writing – explodes on the page√ Characters- are empathetic and credible √ Will you be up all night reading this - most definitely! Would I recommend to you – most certainly! √ My rating - five stars!
Rachel Amphlett is star! She has achieved so much in her relatively short writing career. Rachel has successfully self-published and promoted her books and the Italian foreign rights to White Gold, the first book in this series, were sold last year to Fanucci Editore's TimeCRIME imprint, the same imprint that publishes David Baldacci, John Connolly, and Karin Slaughter. What a coup! Rachel Amphlett is a writer we are most certainly going to hear lost more about!
The third installment in the Dan Taylor series is another complex thriller from Rachel Amphlett. Well paced. and starting with Dan in a tricky situation and lots of twists and turns, and politics along the way. I liked the new character of tech bad-girl Melissa, hoping she recurs in the next installment but the way things ended that might be unlikely!
Fans of big, larger-than-life political thrillers where the threat is enormous, the conspiracy deep seated, and the need for a hero overwhelming could do worse than get on board with the Dan Taylor series.
Book three, THREE LIVES DOWN, could be read as a standalone, although knowing the background to Taylor’s life and work will help with flesh out some of his connections, supporters and enemies. Of course, this is a book that comes straight out of that big threat thriller world, so you will also have to be a fan of huge scenarios, with high stakes games being played in high places - in this case the upper echelons of British government.
Set against the backdrop of the tensions over the European Union gives the story not just a timeframe, but also a feeling of how frequently, if it’s going to hit the fan, it comes at you from multiple directions. Of course, when you have a bloke like Dan Taylor on your side, you could be excused for an expectation that the good guys are going to win (battered, bruised and by the skin of their teeth), and the bad guys are going to go down.
Whilst much of the focus of the story is on Taylor and his efforts, there are supporting characters who step up when required. Mel, the grumpy and eccentric IT expert ticks all the expected boxes, but she is also determined, and one of those people that gets going when the going gets tough.
There’s action aplenty and lots of nicely twisty plot elements. There’s some close scrapes and a lot of charging about. And there’s heaps of entertainment and quite a few subtly funny moments as a bonus. THREE LIVES DOWN is definitely one for political thriller fans.
I was provided a copy of Three Lives Down in exchange for an honest review.
This is book three in the Dan Taylor thriller series. I haven't read the first two books but I did not feel lost at all.
Dan Taylor is almost a cross between a James Bond and a Jack Ryan. He works for the British Energy Protection Group, but is more like a CIA operative. I'm not sure if the EPG is a real agency and never really got a lock on what it was they did from this book. The way Dan and the others acted I thought they were some type of secret agents.
Anyways, the book is political, action, suspense thriller much the same way a James Bond movie is. It also starts off with an action sequences, that without having the music, and special CGI effects to accompany it just doesn't do much for the story.
The story itself was good. Radioactive Isotopes have been stolen from a hydraulic fracking site. The information finds it way to Dan and the chase is on.
There is a whole lot going on in this story. Many different political cogs turning and we are only given bits and pieces. So we only know as much or sometimes a little bit more than Dan does. I really liked that. I like all the twist the story took, even though it got a bit convoluted at times.
Political thrillers aren't necessarily my favorite read and I know nothing about British politics. However just for entertainment purposes this book was pretty good and full of action and suspense, it gets a solid three from me. If you love political thrillers you need to give this series a go...Sara
Starts with a bang with action from the very first line and never really halts until the last words are read. I love the Dan Taylor series - in fact, have thoroughly enjoyed all of Rachel Amphlett's novels. What an exciting author. I'm not sure whether Rachel has some sort of inside line to what's going on in the UK and the wider world, but her stories are scarily current. Listening to a discussion on fracking on the radio last week, I found myself thinking 'wow, you should read Three Lives Down!' That's how realistic this author's novels are! A truly worthy addition to this series, and I find myself wishing and hoping that there are many more to come. I've been recommending this one to everyone I know, it's THAT good!!! Excellent work, Rachel - you are awesome!
I am privileged to have received an arc of this novel, which did not affect my above review in any way whatsoever.
This is the 3rd Dan Taylor series book but the first I have read in this particular series. While it can be read as a stand-alone novel, I would now like to read books 1 & 2. I have read other novels by this author before and enjoyed them immensely. This book was fast paced, action packed with interesting characters. I gave it 4.5 stars (but I had to put 4 stars) only because I got a bit lost with the political side of things. If you like political spy type thrillers, you will enjoy this book.
Having been rescued from a East European prison that was apparently under the control of a Russian Oligarch Dan joins his old ERG team to protect the Prime Minister. However, by the end of the book he is on the run and looks as if he will have to disappear for some time!
Political intrigue is not usually for me but this story is very well written and was excellent read. As usual with this author it has a twist at the end. Very enjoyable but prefer her crime novels. Personal preference however.
Well, fluff me. What on earth are you doing to our poor Dan, Ms Amphlett? I mean, he’s always put in a tight spot, his life on the line and risking everything but in Three Lives Down he is hit by all that and the kitchen sink. Man, this book certainly keeps you on your toes.
You are hit with fast paced action from the very first chapter where an elite team is sent into Eastern Europe to rescue an important hostage. From here we travel to the North East of England where a team of scientists running a fracking operation find their ives in danger for something far more potent than a potential gas supply. Throw in a healthy dose of double cross, the now familiar energy and environmental tussle which informs these books, and our hero Dan Taylor, now on his own following the disappearance of his colleagues Mitch and David Ludlow, and the scene is set for one tense, political/environmental thriller. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not all tense action. There are moments of calm, particularly when Dan spends time with journalist Sarah, his on again off again girlfriend who we first met in White Gold. But in fairness these are few and far between as from the moment Sarah and Dan meet up she is feeding him information which is going to lead him into certain danger and set him against his most trying and powerful opponent yet – the British Government.
The beauty of listening to the audio book, coupled with having a very long drive for work, is that I got to listen to this all in the same day. It meant no real break in the tension, no let up in the action, save for a couple of hours meeting before I was on the road again. And this worked perfectly because it felt like a read/listen in one sitting kind of a book. The story really did grip me, several moments making me smile if only because Dan or Mitch did exactly as I expected them to. I don’t mean that it felt predictable, far from it. I just now feel like I know them so well. They are characters who have really grown on me, hardened and focused by their military training, they will do anything to protect their country, but they are still passionate and ultimately human. They are very likeable and I’m loathe to race through book four now because I will miss them.
As for the story. It is twisted and full of duplicitous and treacherous behaviour from all parties, so much so that it is hard to know who to trust. I must admit there were elements that had me and my colleague grinning. We have spent the last few months talking about MSDS (material safety data sheets) at work and to hear them being talked about in the book as well made us chuckle. And elements of the story are very topical given that in the book there are strong links to the whole failed EU negotiations, the precursor to the wonderful (?) situation of Brexit that we now find ourselves in. Oh the irony.
But oh. That ending. Urf. That’s the only way to describe it. What next for poor Dan? I really want to find out but I also really don’t. Finding the balance between delaying the inevitable and satisfying my curiosity is going to be very difficult. I really do love this series. It has everything I look for in a thriller. Strong characters, great plotting, convincing setting and a lot of fabulous but not fantastical action. Rachel Amphlett manages to humanise it, make it feel authentic rather than make it unbelievable. And the narration on the audio book is top notch, really capturing the essence of each individual character perfectly.
This was my third "A Dan Taylor Thriller" by Rachel Amphlett.

I did like it but I liked the first two Dan Taylor's Thrillers (White Gold and Under fire) more.
Perhaps the reason was that I figured out the outcome too soon. Perhaps because... oops... almost blurted out too much and spoiled it for you... ;) But that's just me. The book is worth to read if you like fast-paced thrillers this one is definitely for you
Dan Tyler’s back! In this, the brilliant third in her Dan Tyler series, Rachel Amphlett takes the reader on a fast-paced thrill-filled ride where not everything or everyone is as they seem. This is a page turner which keeps the reader in suspense as Dan tries to work out who wants him dead, and why, what has happened to his two friends, and the significance of three men killed in northern England. The various strands of the story are cleverly woven together to keep the reader on edge till the very end. Amphlett at her best. Don’t miss this one.
Thanks to the author for my copy to read and review
I received an advanced reading copy of the latest Dan Taylor thriller, Three Lives Down, and enjoyed every reading minute. The contemporary story line seems very plausible to me and, in addition, is truly scary. Dan and his co-workers, and their assortment of high-tech equipment are fun to read about, interesting and just on the edge of being too good to be true. The places of action are so interesting, I want to know if they are real (I don't want to give anything away by saying too much…). In short, I recommend this book to all readers of this genre.
I loved this book! I have read all of the work of Rachel Amphlett and have never been disappointed. Well written, engaging, realistic, believable from start to finish. Gripping, keeps you guessing right to the very end. Can't wait to see what 2016 brings! I read all books before going Goodreads so can't recall the dates. As I 'Follow' Rachel I am alerted to her next work and read the book straight away. I know I won't be disappointed!
An ambitious politician. An unsavory Russian mafia kingpin. Deceit and betrayal at the highest level in the British government. Dan Taylor is caught in the middle of it. This is a highly suspenseful action thriller!! Twists and turns on every page....to the very last. I highly recommend!!
I have been looking forward to this book for some time and Rachel delivered another page turner. She throws everything except the kitchen sink at her characters and i love the way she makes them deal with it. A great read.
