A path to the Ghostfeast, where everything will end.
International bestselling author Kent Holloway lives on death. Literally. With more than twenty-two years’ experience in forensic death investigations, he’s seen it all. Experienced the worst that life has to give and never let it dim his sense of wonder or humor. Now, he brings all this experience, along with a zeal for uncovering the folklore and superstitions of death, to the written page as author of mysteries, forensic crime fiction, and paranormal thrillers!
He is the author of six paranormal thrillers, including his highly acclaimed Ezekiel Crane series, as well as his forensic thriller, CLEAN EXIT. He’s also written his first installment of the Baron Tombstone adventures—a series that steps directly into the world of the dead—in the shared pirate world series, Tattered Sails.
Death investigations isn’t his only foray into the darker side of life. He's also an adjunct professor of criminal justice at St. Johns River State College in Florida. He’s worked as a private investigator and a newspaper reporter covering the crime beat in Florida. When he’s not writing, designing book covers, or investigating deaths, he spends much of his spare time researching folklore, as well as investigating ghosts and cryptids throughout northeast Florida.
Ghost Feast is another great book in the Ezekiel Crane series. Holloway tears at your heart strings throughout the book, then leaves you desperate for the next one.
How’s that for an opening sentence? Well, not much for those of you who want to know about the ‘why’, I reckon. Here goes!
The good:
Throughout ‘Cursed’, ‘Deathsong’ and ‘Ghostfeast’ we get to know a relatively small, yet brilliantly crafted set of characters. There are Some you’ll instantly like and maybe even relate to. Others will come across as outright suspicious and I do like the fact that Kent Holloway inmost cases decided that these characters actually do take on a antagonistic persona, even though in some cases it’s not entirely of their own free will.
There are several plot twists in place. Most of them have been executed masterfully, like how the main antagonist of this book is developed and eventually unmasked. I had a pretty good idea of who it was about halfway into the story, but Holloway kept me guessing here and there. I did get it right in the end, which made me feel even better about my modest detective skills ;)
Lastly, if you’ve read the first three of the books in this series like I have, you’ll have come to love Ezekiel Crane. You finally experience what he is enduring throughout the whole story and for that he can definitely count himself among the likes of Aloysius Pendergast and Will Trent. The paranormal aspect got an uplift from ‘Cursed’ and ‘Deathsong’ and while I was sceptical at first, it played out extremely well.
Room for improvement:
Ultimately I was a bit disappointed with the actual role Holloway decided to give the sin-eater. The entire plot could have had a much bigger climax with some minor adjustments, even though the ending in itself was very satisfying.
The other aspect of the story that felt a bit awkward at times were the love affairs, for as far as they can be classified as such. Ashera and Kili both felt as love interests in multiple cases, but Holloway didn’t let this come to fruition so far. This especially makes Ashera one very complex character because of her nature, and I was not entirely sure that the author knew in which direction he would take her during the writing process.
All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed ‘Ghostfeast’. Too bad it wasn’t just a bit longer, which could have provided the space to straighten out the slightly off-key parts in this otherwise brilliantly written paranormal mystery novel.
Awesome series... love the characters.... the storyline is so original!! So glad I found this series. The author is a magnificent story teller. Bring on the next book!!!!!
In the deep dark world of the Appalachians, folklore, voodoo, mysticism and weird rituals abound (weird to some of us, anyway). In the town of Boone Creek (home of notorious Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, Ezekiel Crane), a new son-eater has been named. Normally a valued and sacrosanct (although secret) role in the community, the new sin-eater has brought nothing but evilness and murder to the small town. It is up to Ezekiel Crane to solve the mystery, not only the identity of the sin-eater, but why he (or she) is killing people and not allowing their souls to find their rest. What he finds will being dire consequences to the town and mortal danger to himself.
In the third installment of the Ezekiel Crane Mysteries, we are thrown almost instantaneously into the action from the start. What follows is a scary and intriguing thrill ride that will have you wondering what could possibly happen next. The amount of twists and turns in this book will definitely keep you guessing until the last page. I'm certainly hoping that there will be another book in this series, and if there's one thing I've taken away from the sage so far, it's that I'm going to stay right away from the area - it seems like a terrifying world to live in!!!
I have thoroughly enjoyed this Ezekiel Crane trilogy, but the ending to The Ghostfeast is far too much of a cliffhanger for me. Not to say I won't read the next book when it comes out - of course I will. I love the in-depth characters, the continuous action, and the way Mr. Holloway slowly reveals the mysteries that Crane suspects are happening. There are so many great twists and turns in the plot that there's no way to predict Crane 's next move. I hope it doesn't take too long for he next book to come out. And, oh yeah, BRING BACK GRANNY! 😊 She's too rich of a character to die off so soon.
This third book in the Ezekiel Crane series may be my favorite one yet. It was a bit darker and creepier, with the same amazing story-telling that I have come to expect from Kent Holloway. I love that he stays true to the language and places of the Kentucky mountain people, which really brings the characters to life. The story has some unexpected twists and turns and keeps you guessing right up to the end! It was a great read and I hated to see it end.
Ezekiel Crane is back...finally. Kent Holloway sure made us wait, but it was worth it. If you like mysteries, with maybe a bit of creep in there, then you'll love this series. I'll be honest, I cursed Mr. Holloway a couple times in this book..all in good reader fun, he'll keep you guessing and may even surprise you with a few twists.
