I thought the situation (of this story) should have been awkward for the heroine. Jess and Misty grew up together in foster care. Having no family, Jess at least considers Misty her sister and Misty's 4-year old son Jake, her nephew. Jake is result of a one-night stand with Sean Murphy and four years later she springs (surprise -- you're my baby's daddy) this news on him because her goal is a big payday from Jake winning the DNA Lottery.
Misty isn't much of a mother as she relinquishes her motherly duties onto Jess. Fearing what would happen to Jake without her in his life, Jess keeps Misty close so that she doesn't take off with Jake and neglect him to spite her. Jess is Jake's primary caretaker and she is concerned about Sean's intentions when he enters the picture. Sean is shocked to have a son, but family is very important to him. Though he barely remembers Misty (and yes, he used a condom) he is determined to be a part of his son's life and win Jess's respect.
The awkward part (at least to me) is that Misty is still in the picture since she flits in and out of the lives of Jess and Jake and quasi-lives with them. It just felt weird for Jess to be interested in Sean, especially given there was no conversation between the two women about it. Jess and Sean's road to romance was uneventful, as was the sex! Sean spent no time getting the engine ready, before immediately firing the piston in one fell swoop -- each and every time. Don't even get me started about sex with clothes on -- it's tawdry to me!
Jess felt a deep love for Misty, but Misty made her true feelings for Jess known. One of the pivotal moments in the story was extremely convenient and didn't make much sense to me in the grand scheme of things. But I loved Sean's ultimate resolution to the crisis -- loved it!
Caveat: Don't mess with the Murphy Brothers!
