Queen Evelina is the victorious hero of the war that freed her countrymen from tyrannical invaders and her own wicked father. She is revered by the people—mighty of arms, inspired with strategy and relentless in tenacity... thirsty of blood, towering with pride, and cemented in obstinance—she is feared by the people. Old enemies seek her ruin, the fall of her kingdom and a return to power. Known as the Dawnmaiden to those who love her, and as the Bloody Virgin to those that hate her; will Evelina overcome her own flaws and spite, or will she become indistinguishable from the villains she fights? Dead Kings is a character driven fantasy epic in a vast world of warring kingdoms, conquering empires and godlike necromancers.
Oh man, I'm the first person to leave a review for this.
Plot: The book opens with a fight scene when a Queens counsil rebels and attempts to kill her. She's forced to flee and seek help from her father.... who is an Undead King. It turns out there are more Undead Kings, he's not the only one and they are all brothers and there's a grandfather Undead King as well. There's discord among the brothers and it could lead to war, there could also be a civil war over the matter of the queens position of whether to queen her or kill her.
Characters:
Evalina is the queen, and she's a super over powered MC. She has special abilities since she's the daughter of one of the Undead Kings. Since she's half elf, half undead she's ridiculously strong and cuts through huge numbers of people.
Maire is the queens younger half sister. Sweet, innocent, has healing abilities. Usually sees the best in people.
There are a bunch of side characters, but the story is basically about these two.
Pacing:
It speeds up and slows down, the battle scenes are awesome but there are slower scenes with politics and what not.
Audience:
* People who don't mind debut novel unpolishedness * People who like Undead hordes, necromancers, and the elves * People who like a lot of magic * People who like a lot of sword fights * People who like over powered main characters * People who like more straight forward story telling
First, I wish to thank Aaron for sending me his book in return for an honest review. I had so much fun with it. I love reading books about Kings and Queens, I love watching TV Series with Kings and Queens. At this moment, my favorite TV Series is Reign, and if you haven't watched it yet, you must do it. As well as reading this book. Even though is just fiction, is so awesome. The cover is done by Darnis Art and I just love it!!! Is one of my favorite covers I've ever seen. I know that I shouldn't judge a book by its cover by I couldn't help it. When I saw it for the first time I was so enchanted by it that I had high expectations from this book. And thank God, I enjoyed every second I'd spend reading it. The writing is so easy and clear, and the characters are well contoured. The environment is very good described. What I loved about it the most is the fact that at the end of the book, there are a few pages on which is described every character or phrases. For example, the wizards are called Arcan, or the people who have no magical ability are called Brume. I just hope that there will be a second book, continuing with Evelina's adventures.
Good story, but leaves too many questions unanswered
The story could have done with a prelude or some flashbacks. There is no clue as to what the villains end game is, why they act like they do, why are The Dead Kings still kings..... if you can get past that, it's pretty decent. Maybe the sequel will explain more.
