Now the Director of the Kentucky Office of Homeland Security, Brooke Fairfax has one objective: Stay on top of all threats to the people and property of the Commonwealth. The position is thankless and never-ending. It even pulls her out of Declan O’Roark’s bed in the middle of the night.

A power grid failure has struck Kentucky’s largest city and Brooke assumes the role of lead coordinator for the investigation. The power outage pushes the city to the brink of chaos. Police, fire, and rescue workers are overwhelmed—their efforts crippled by failed communication systems, looters ransacking businesses, hospitals running on emergency generators, and people desperate to find safety in a city quickly eroding into lawlessness.

While experts scramble to restore the grid before thousands lose their lives, Declan receives word from an intelligence contact that an eastern European cell of cyber terrorists are looking to take down the power grid for the entire Eastern Seaboard. Brooke and Declan must combine their efforts before the next attack. Just as Brooke and Declan get close to the truth, the attackers turn their attention on stopping their greatest threat—Brooke and Declan.

Covered in Darkness by Heather Sunseri is the third volume in the In Darkness series. Brooke Fairfax and her boyfriend, Declan O’Roark are enjoying the reopening party of the Mint Julep Inn until Brooke starts receiving warnings of an impending storms (high winds, hail, tornados). Brooke is the new director of Kentucky Office of Homeland Security and the governor is worried. The storm takes out the power in many areas and leaves debris in its wake. Power is restored but not in Louisville. When Louisville Power fails to respond to Brooke’s calls, she heads to Louisville with Governor Mac Kale. After speaking with Ryan Saltzman (the CEO of LP), Brooke can tell the company is hiding something. But what? With the help of Sam Clay and her team, Brooke uncovers a cyberterrorism plot. Louisville is just a jumping off point for this group. Brooke and her team needs to find the culprits before they succeed in terminating power along the whole eastern seaboard. When Sam is kidnapped, Brooke will do what it takes to get her back even if it means risking her own life. Join Brooke on her latest case in Covered in Darkness.

Covered in Darkness is nicely written and it has a fast pace. There are evildoers, kidnapping, a stalker, romance, thoroughbred horses, cyberterrorism, and more. Covered in Darkness is the third book in the In Darkness series and the books are best read in order. The books in the series build upon each other. I thought the main mystery was complex with many twists and turns. The Romeo storyline (is present in all the books in the series) is beginning to grate on my nerves. I keep hoping that the identity of Romeo will be revealed (so it can end and I can see if I correctly identified him). My rating for Covered in Darkness is 3.5 out of 5 stars. While it is a good story, I found it similar to Exposed in Darkness and Cut in Darkness. In each novel, there is a bad guy that Brooke needs to find, she risks her life, Declan to the rescue with the help of Romeo. Declan tries to protect Brooke, but she is stubborn and wishes to prove she can take care of herself (which leads to her needing to be rescued). I would like to see more growth in Brooke. While she is in a relationship with Declan, she has yet to emotionally move past what happened to her husband. Brooke is still angry with her father and refusing to speak with him about personal matters. There is repetition of information (details about the case for example). In Covered in Darkness there is foul language, violence, and intimate relations in Covered in Darkness. Covered in Darkness is a good suspense novel (don’t get me wrong), however, I would like the author to deviate from her formula (shake things up).

I am a big fan of Heather Sunseri, including her 'In Darkness' series. In this third installment, heroine Brooke Fairfax is now Kentucky's Director of Homeland Security, but, of course. that doesn't mean she's out of harm's way. One of the things I really liked about this book was that I felt the main scenario/conflict was easy to relate to. Power outages happen all the time, and can lead to other problems for a city or state if they are prolonged. But this book asked the question... what if terrorists are behind the outage? It's an intriguing plot. I also liked that one of the most climactic scenes is told from the point of view of Declan O'Roarke, Brooke's hot hot hot, loving, devoted, and charming-as-hell boyfriend. He's basically everyone's dream guy, but he's not perfect. And the glimpses inside his head are great parts of the book.

What kept me from giving this book 5 stars is that I didn't think the plot was as delicately woven as the first two in the series. Everything here seemed a bit more straight-forward and less mysterious. In some cases, I felt like Brooke wasn't really considering the other people in her life when she was making decisions to do dangerous things. That seemed out of character for her to me, because I always took her as a caring (albeit bad-ass) individual. Furthermore, I felt like the reader was left hanging with 'Romeo' story line. He is reintroduced fairly early, but it seems like he's there just to be there, and not because he has any sort of real agenda.

All-in-all, "Covered" is an entertaining read. I'm looking forward to seeing what's next for Brooke and Declan.

I have to start with admission that In Darkness series is one of my favourite series, my auto buy whenever a book in this series came out. It’s an adult romance suspense genre although without explicit sex scenes that prominent in RS genre books.

I love the premise of the series, where it follows the life of Brooke Fairfax and Declan O’Roark. While the main mystery was stand-alone, the characters (including those marvellous side characters) and over-arching story were continuous from previous books. So I would say that you could not read this book with full enjoyment and understanding if you haven’t read previous books.

In this third book, Brooke was the Director of Homeland Security of Kentucky and Declan was… still Declan. A billionaire with penchant for thoroughbred horses. Once again Brooke faced with sinister plot threatening America, and she and her team tried everything to prevent it. And of course, with Romeo made cameos in scenes. As usual, it was suspenseful, kept me reading to the end, and heartfelt with sweet romantic scenes between Brooke and Declan. Brooke’s complicated relationship with her dad was pictured more deeply here as well, and it really added to the depth of the story.

What prevent me from 5 stars review then? Well, I think, for a seasoned ex-FBI agent, Brooke was too careless and took unnecessary risks one too many times. After the second carelessness, she’s sound like an amateur sleuth. Maybe it’s just me, but I really felt the ‘step-down’ from the smart woman in the previous two books.

I am still impatiently waiting for the next book of course, and so glad that it will be published soon enough.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from the publisher.

Heather is one of my favorite authors and here is why.

This is a continuation in the Exposed in Darkness series and it does not disappoint.

Brooke is working for the Kentucky Homeland Security. She left the FBI for numerous reasons, and its no doubt that Declan feels better about her out of danger, but will that feeling last? One night of terrible storms and tornados, Louisville Kentucky looses power and the town goes to chaos. A record making heatwave strikes when the town has no AC. The hospitals only have so much juice in their generators, people are getting sick, people are panicking and robbing stores, killing, and vandalizing. All of this while the LP is denying anything suspicious about the power grid and that it will function soon enough. Brooke has a gut feeling that there is something worse going on. With LP bringing their technologist who specializes in hacking and with the Senator's theory of the power grid being vulnerable to terrorists, Brooke decides to start digging even though Declan worries about her safety non stop. If there is something running deeper, will Brooke find out what? And if Brooke goes in deep, will Declan forgive her for the worrying he goes through?

This series is one of my favorites with an amazing and badass heroine and hot and sweet love interest. The plot is twisting and curving non stop leaving you on the edge of your seat. You will be frustrated at times and swoon at others and laugh numerous times when it comes to Dimitri, Ty, and Declan.

I can safely say I need the next book NOW!!!! I read an excerpt of Shot in Darkness and am feeling for the next book, or even next excerpt! JUST SOMETHING!

Read this series or you will regret it. This series need to be on TV or a movie.

Covered in Darkness is an intense and epic addition to the In Darkness series from Heather Sunseri. Brooke is still the tough girl who doesn’t play around even though she is now the Director of Kentucky Homeland Security instead of working for the FBI. She doesn’t let that stop her from getting involved in taking down a cyber terrorist group that plans on attacking the USA.

Sunseri keeps the pace moving with the amount of suspense and action. Declan finds himself added to the mix which makes his past all the more interesting to learn about. Dimitri was also a nice added touch. We finally get to meet him and learn more about him as he helps Declan and Brooke figure out who Romeo is.

There were so many twists and turns that I didn’t see coming that made this all the more enjoyable. All I’m going to say is, I NEED THE NEXT BOOK NOW!

Highly recommended for those looking for a book that is impossible to put down, that has all of the feels, is intense and suspenseful, then you need to pick this up ASAP.

There are a few minor sexual scenes (all of which are non-graphic, short and sweet that readers can easily skip over without missing anything), swearing, and some drinking alcoholic beverages. It’s clean for the most part other than that.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the publisher for my honest review, which I have given. I was not required to write a positive review and have not been compensated for it in any way. All opinions expressed are my own.

I read as slowly as I could, because...

BOOM 💥

This author continues to blow my mind with every book in this series. She is outstanding, Heather Sunseri is such a talented storyteller.

This is romantic suspense at its best. Besides the absolute stellar character development, the story lines are new and fresh in every book.

It's interesting to delve deeper into Declan's past, and how it intersects with the Russians overtaking the power grid. And Dimitri, a big part of Declan's past is quite the interesting character. On top of all that Romeo is still a step ahead of everyone.

And the best part...Brooke is as kick ass as ever, I can't wait to delve deeper into her past. And I need Brooke & Declan's HEA. This series is so good, this author's talent is epic.

A fun, fast paced addition to the In Darkness series. Brooke and Declan have another crazy adventure, this time with Russian hackers, and craziness follows. There was a lot more looking into Declan's past, and of course the mysterious Romeo, but I missed more action with some of the supporting characters we have come to love in the previous novels. However, the stage is set for book 4 and I am looking forward to seeing where Brooke takes us next...

This is book three in the Exposed in Darkness Series and the series just gets better and darker. This one involves a Department of Homeland Security Agent Brooke and her love interest Declan. A very intense thriller that brings in all types of problems, real and conspiracy. A major power outage in Kentucky that cripples hospitals, police, businesses, etc. No shortage of surprises or drama, terrorists, power grid failures, tornadoes, a US Senator and numerous emergencies. Brooke and Declan are in serious danger. No spoiler here, but quite a gripping story that captures your attention at the beginning and keeps it. I received an advance copy and voluntarily chose to review it.

I am a huge fan of this series and Book 3 does not disappoint.

When a widespread blackout occurs across the State of Kentucky, Brooke Fairchild the Director of the State's Homeland Security Task Force, jumps in to try to solve the issue. Once and analyst, always and analyst, Brooke's FBI training and instincts kick in and she soon finds herself up against some nasty people. With the help of her partner Ty and her love Declan (and a cast of other characters) Brooke sets out to find the answers to the current mystery.

This story grabbed me in and didn't spit me out until the end. Definitely recommend!

Another great book in this ongoing story line. The characters are so nicely developed with new surprises being offered up with each new release.

Nice little mystery thriller without the blood and guts descriptions. Backstabbing and betrayals with unlikely partnerships being formed temporarily for the greater good.

I got this as an advanced copy. OMG! Heather did it again! This book is very intriguing and keeps you on the edge of your seat. Brooke knows how to get into serious trouble and Romeo always seems to know what she is doing. Declan is always trying to keep Brooke safe and protected. Dimitri is definitely an interesting character.

If you want to read about suspense and action, this is the book for you. This series just keeps getting better with each book that Heather writes. Keep up the good work Heather!

This doesn't official release until August 1st, but I had the opportunity to read an ARC and I'm here to tell you that this book in the series is just as spellbinding as those that have come before. Brooke and Declan are a couple that shows they keep on growing and she is more important to him than anything else in the world. Having Brooke, Declan, Dimitri, Ty, Marti, Aidan, and even Romero back in the mix continues to give this story depth. The suspense alone will have you on the edge of our seat, but add all the rest and you won't be able to put it down.

I absolutely love this series. The characters pull you in from the start and don't let go. I also really love the the female character is a strong female and has ethics and morals. The chemistry between her and her work partner, and her and her romantic parter is great, all the personalities shine through and the plot is frightening in an all together too possible way. Can't go wrong here.

Intrigue and suspense galore in this third outing in the In Darkness series. Hopefully no terrorist read this book and get any ideas...

Brooke Fairfax walked away from the FBI to become the Director of Homeland Security of Kentucky. Now you may be thinking that has to be a boring job – what terrorist are interesting in Kentucky. Well, Brooke seems to be a magnet for intense situations and after an intense round of storms tear through Kentucky and the power grid goes down in Louisville what everyone first thought was just an outage due to weather soon morphs into something more sinister.

Brooke and her team at the fusion center soon start getting clues that the outage may be part of a terrorist attack and with the full backing of the Governor they start an investigation. Of course her previous employer – the FBI – including her father who is the Director aren't to keen on her involvement. But as I mentioned before Brooke is a magnet for all things nefarious and her and her team are getting information the FBI doesn't have and Brooke waits for no one.

Brooke's millionaire boyfriend Declan is understandably stressed that she has found herself in the middle of danger again. I have to give him credit though he doesnt forbid her from doing anything (like that would work with Brooke) but he stays one step behind her always having her back and utilizing his old intelligence partner Dimitri to help him again.

This genre is definitely this author forte. She excels at suspense and keeping the story moving at a high rate of speed. And (stalker/informant) Mr Romeo.. I cannot wait to find out who this dude is he is as dangerous as he is helpful and the man has got to have superpowers..

The continuation of Brooke & Declan’s story in Covered in Darkness has the couple sorting through the latest mystery facing the Governor’s office, while simultaneously testing the strength of their relationship. This time the power has gone out, but the outage isn’t due to the storms. The outage was intentional, and Brooke needs to find out who is behind it before it is too late.

Brooke is now the head of Homeland Security for the State of Kentucky, a job she loves, but that places her at odds with the F.B.I., an organization she is intimately familiar with. Declan thought this position would be less dangerous for her, but it seems that Brooke keeps getting pulled into the middle of volatile situations. Brooke learns that the recent power outage is anything but routine and as she follows the clues, they lead her deeper into a terrorist plot to extort large sums of money from the power companies. The men who are requesting the money aren’t messing around, and don’t care who they have to kill to get it. Her associate has been taken by them and it is up to Brooke to save her from the terrorists.

Heather delivers a great story that is believable and suspenseful. It is evident that she does a great deal of research on her topics, and her characters are well rounded and developed. I am looking forward to reading more about Brooke’s journey to come to terms with her past heartbreak, and Declan’s attempts to win her heart. I am definitely looking forward to learning more about Dimitri, so glad to hear he will be getting his own story!

Excitement and intrigue again..loved it

Ok- how Brooke seems to find trouble at every turn is beyond me. What irritates me so much in this story (as with the others) is that..for a woman who keep saying she can take care of herself, she sucks at surveillance and protecting herself all the time. I was agitated that she keeps getting kidnapped, snuck up on, injured..yet she thinks she so "together". She needed to have a tracking device inserted under her skin just so we can find her. Ok- I'm done my rant.

This book was another great addition to the Declan/ Brooke saga..while some things were left unfinished (like what's with the coincidence that the same Russian thug Declan tangled with is in Kentucky..uh huh..and how did he determine Declan's involvement with with Brooke and the power issue..).. anywho, between that unfinished business and Brooke's constant need to find trouble..some parts seemed a little..implausible for my tastes, but I still loved it. I'm dying to fiend out who Romeo is and how he knows so much about cases Brooke works on..hopefully his identity and this thread won't last forever.

If you're a fan of the series, this is a great addition..read on. If you're finding this book for the first time, you can read it alone, but reading the others will be more enjoyable.

Heather Sunseri has done it again. An engaging story in which we learn more about the main characters with a very believable and currently relevant problem for Brooke to figure out. I must admit, the stories are almost so believable that I wonder if I will read about this same plot in a future news story and that is somewhat terrifying. The author does a great job of explaining the technical problems so that they are understandable and yet not watered down for the average adult reader. I'm enjoying learning more about the main characters and I'm hoping that she will write more about each of them. Including Declan's past life (as well as Brooke's). I'm still not sure that I fully understand the characters yet, but that only adds to the intrigue and trying to understand why they make the choices they make. I appreciate that the individuals are not perfect and that they don't make perfect decisions, but they are consistent within their own personal character traits. I would recommend these books to anyone interested in a face paced, well-written FBI type thriller. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from the publisher."

Sunseri's third book in the series is absolutely the best. This book's plot was the most creative and the most well-researched. Brooke is still the emotional equivalent of an adolescent, but I am beginning to think this is her personality and that she is not going to simply grow out of it any time soon.
Understanding more of Declan's backstory was a definite must for this third installment. Sunseri gave us answers at the right time because following all of Declan's motivations was becoming difficult.
Sunseri excels at the mystery, suspense, and action-packed thrill ride. You'll be breathless from the danger to danger ride, but you might want to punch the heroine at times because she makes hasty decisions. For all of her, sharing-info-law-enforcement-working-together ideals, she sure goes into most situations without back-up or other agencies knowing her game plan. I know she has issues with the feds, but local police could be her friend.

4 stars. Covered in Darkness is the third book in the In Darkness series. If you have read the previous books it helps you understand the setting and the main characters. But this book can be read as a standalone. There isn't a cliffhanger at the end though it is open-ended for the next book in the series. There is violence and sex so 18+.

The book blurb adequately describes the storyline so I'm not going to repeat that info here. The main characters in the series are Brooke Fairfax and Declan O'Rourke. You easily get caught up in the emotions of the characters and story. The plot of this book involves terrorism using the electrical grid. There is plenty of action as well as twists and turns in the book. I really enjoyed this book and storyline. I look forward to reading more of Heather Sunseri's other books as well as future books in this series. I received a copy of this book from the author and chose to leave a review for other readers.

Just when I think this series can't possibly get better, another book comes out and proves me wrong. It's filled with fast-paced, gripping action that had me madly flipping pages to see what would happen next. We learn a little more about Declan's mysterious past and get to see more of Dimitri in action. Romeo's back, and just as slyly manipulative as ever. Brooke's still can't resist running straight into the heart of danger, but I don't think we'd lover her the same if she was more cautious. I loved watching Declan break through some of that diamond-hard armor Brooke's been keeping her heart behind. And seeing the two of them actually behaving like a couple was really sweet. I also greatly enjoyed the opportunity to catch-up on the lives of their "faithful sidekicks": Ty, Carrie Anne, Marti, and Aidan. The ending, while not a cliff-hanger, has certainly guaranteed that I need to read the next book.
I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book.

Covered in Darkness is a great addition to this series. It felt a tiny bit slow at first and the action seemed to be over too quickly. I think that could have been more my mood than the quality of the story. Despite that, I loved it and get more and more excited about the characters with each book. I think Heather has developed the them beautifully. I love Declan unconditionally, Brooke has moments that make me want to scream as well as cheer but the characters I am dying to know more about are Dimitri and Romeo. They are mysterious while Declan and Brooke are sort of settling into a relationship. I love the healthy mix of adventure, mystery, and romance. I really enjoy the way the story is wrapped up in the end except one or two tiny elements that make you count the days until the next book. I can't wait to see where this goes. Who is Romeo?!?

This Series keeps getting better and better. Declan fights to be closer to Brooke but Romeo is right there hidden in the shadows along with a group of terrorists linked to Declan's past. Brooke still feels broken, she knows that she loves Declan but cannot give him what she has left of herself after the tragedy of her husband and child. With little time to think about herself, she keeps pushing those closest to her away and running toward the certain danger that is trying to take control of her state. It's a nailbiter until the final page. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from the publisher.

Darkness 3

Brooke finds herself in an act of terrorism and her father is caught between saving his daughter or having his country. Brooke gets caught up in an unusual power disruption after a major storm rips through Kentucky but as clues are gathered, it leads the Kentucky Office of Homeland security to Russian terrorist and Brooke to danger. Brooke realizes that accepting help from Declan and Dimitri can only aid her investigation. Will they all be able to beat the terrorist and come away with their lives?

Another great installment in this series and I am looking forward to the next book.

This is another book that you can't stop reading once you've started. Heather did an amazing job on the plot (as usual) and continuing to develop the characters. Love this series and this book is the best so far. Since we know all the characters from the previous books I loved seeing their interactions and relationships develop.
The mystery and intrigue is notched up to max by the end of this book. I love how all in Declan is and his efforts to save and get Brooke to be all in too. She is just so gun shy of relationships since her last husband was murdered. She loves Declan but is afraid being in his life is going to get him killed.
Great series should be read in order.

Another masterpiece by heather. Brooke and Declan are a perfect couple. she always finds herself in a mess of trouble with the bad guys, this time the Russian mob. Thankfully she has Declan and friends that are willing to go through anything to help her. Strong characters and an excellent story, well worth the read. This series is one of my favourites and can't wait for the next one.

Truly engaging -- best one yet!

I have enjoyed books one through three the last few days and have enjoyed each one! They have unique plots, vividly written scenes, terrific dialogue and interesting characters!

With that said, yup, LOL, I think this was the best one yet! The story was truly compelling -- frightening if it even has tiny chance of occurring! Entertaining and a fun book to sink into a comfy spot with!

Covered in Darkness, the third book in the In Darkness series, is filled with edge of your seat action that had me shouting in my head at Brooke to stop being so Brooke-ish and putting herself continually in danger. This book drops a few more hints about Declan’s background and what Dmitri really is. I very highly recommend reading this book. The first two books aren’t totally necessary to read first, but this one will make much more sense if you do.

I love this series, it's like watching crime TV shows, only in book form. You'll be on edge, cry out (ok, just in my mind) profanities on how stupid their decisions are, and try to solve the case with them. This was a tad bit predictable, but forgivable predictable.

Like the first two books, I got hooked on the story. I'm definitely gonna watch out for the next book.
