Intelligence analyst and former FBI special agent Brooke Fairfax is on the run. Not from anything sinister, but from her past. She’s hiding from Declan O’Roark after he proposed a question she simply wasn’t ready to answer. She finds solitude in Washington D.C. where she struggles to reconcile her feelings about her late husband and a possible future with Declan. Within hours, Declan tracks her down, desperate to save the relationship.
After establishing a tenuous truce, Brooke and Declan meet a suspicious man outside a Georgetown neighborhood bar. Terror begins to unfold just as Brooke realizes the man’s intentions. But what appears to be yet another random shooting spree turns out to be a highly targeted act. Brooke’s and Declan’s lives will be changed forever — if they’re lucky enough to escape.
Heather Sunseri was raised on a tiny farm in the smallest of towns in thoroughbred horse country near Lexington, Kentucky. After high school, she attended Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina, and later graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in accounting. Always torn between a passion for fantasy and a mind for the rational, it only made sense to combine her career in accounting with a novel-writing dream.
Heather now lives in a different small town on the other side of Lexington with her two children, and her husband, Mike, the biggest Oregon Duck fan in the universe. When she’s not writing or working as a CPA, she spends her time tormenting her daughter’s cat, Olivia, and loving on her son’s Golden Retriever, Jenny. MINDSPEAK is her first published novel.
This novella is packed with punches! You learn so much about Romeo and watch Brooke grow in her journey of love and loss.
Shot in Darkness is about Brooke who goes to D.C to visit a friend of hers who is being stalked and might know who Romeo is. She goes to Ty's house and dog sits for them while they are on vacation. One thing she didn't count on was Declan tracking her down and showing up on Ty's door step. Together, they decide to meet with this friend to find out about Romeo... but will they make it to the meeting with a creepy neighbor on Ty's street who might be missing a few screws?
This novella had me begging for more! I need to know what happens next! Like two hours before now!!!
If any book series should be a TV show or movie series, this is it! I can't stop reading once I start! Forget meals and the bathroom! With scenes depicted in the best way almost like a motion picture, great plots, twists, funny moments, love, and who can forget about the hot Irish billionaire that is too sweet to be real!
Read this series and this novella or you will regret it for the rest of your life!

For this to be a novella there were so many Oh My God moments through out it.
OMG – Chapter 8
OMG - Dimitri
OMG – that last chapter
This is not a stand alone book. You need to have read all the previous books but it such a fabulous series if you haven't read it yet what are you waiting for...
Omg, for a novella Heather manages to get so much into this book. Finally a name for Romeo and why he's stalking/helping Brooke. Declan getting shot is the perfect push for Brooke to finally realize how much she loves him and wants a life with him. Awesome novella and definitely worth the read. Can't wait for the next one. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from the publisher.
This is a short novella that is easy to read in one sitting as it is fast paced and suspenseful. This story comes directly after the Russian mob tried to kill Brooke, now she unknowingly stumbles into another case as she is chasing the identity of Romeo. When Declan gets caught in the crossfire, Brooke must decide what she really wants in life. I can't wait for more of this series.
Shot in Darkness by Heather Sunseri is the fourth novella in the In Darkness collection. Brooke Fairfax has agreed to housesit/pet sit for her friends, Tyler and James in Georgetown (dogs are called Thurston and Lovey—who know what show these names come from?). The call came just when Brooke needed to get away and her old college friend, Anya Bhatia requested an in-person meeting (good timing). Her boyfriend, Declan O’Roark was talking about their future and Brooke is not sure she is ready. She packed up her suitcase and took off—without telling Declan. Brooke is out with the dogs when she notices Tyler’s neighbor, Bradley getting a large package of ammunition. She puts it aside when she sees Declan standing on the front porch (did not take him long to track her down). They agree to not discuss the future for the next two weeks (while housesitting). That evening on the way to the Full Court Press for her meeting with Anya she notices Bradley again. Brooke calls Tyler to get some details while Declan heads into the bar. Then shots ring out and, once again, Brooke’s life is in jeopardy. But who was shot? Does this have anything to do with Brooke asking Anya to dig for Romeo’s identity?
Shot in Darkness contains good writing and strong characters. I was thrilled that Shot in Darkness had a faster pace than the last two books. It is a quick and easy novella to read (just a short story). And at long last, it looks like the Romeo case is making headway (hooray). It was nice to see growth in Brooke’s character (about time). I could feel the suspense during critical scenes in this story. I can understand wanting answers about her husband, but Brooke takes things to extremes. I give Shot in Darkness 4 out of 5 stars (I liked it). Shot in Darkness is not a stand-alone book. Each book in the In Darkness series builds upon the previous one. It will be interesting to see what happens next regarding Romeo (I am just hoping it does not drag on for several more books).
“Shot in Darkness” by Heather Sunseri is the fourth book in the In Darkness series. While this is much shorter than the other novels, considering a novella, this will only leave the reader wanting more. This time Brooke isn’t even on a case, but we deal with Romeo. In fact, we finally learn who he is! FINALLY!
Brooke is also struggling with deciding whether or not she wants to commit to Declan and to Kentucky. While I completely understand her reasoning, it was kind of annoying to see her deal with that for so long. I enjoyed that. Hopefully, she sticks with this decision and doesn’t decide to change her mind later.
The romance is super cute. This book does contain one non-graphic and short pre-marital sex scene but is overall done well. There is also some bad language and drinking wine here and there so I would only suggest this series for older teens and adults.
Overall, I really enjoyed this read. When I first started reading, I wasn’t planning on finishing it in one sitting, but that’s exactly what I ended up doing. This is indeed a fast page-turner. I need the next book ASAP because I need more!
Highly recommended!
Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the publisher for my honest review, which I have given. I was not required to write a positive review and have not been compensated for it in any way. All opinions expressed are my own.
Suspense hanging in each page, atmosphere of mystery everywhere, and love is in the air.
The suspense started right off the bat. Brooke ‘ran’ away, needing some space to think things through. A new, extremely curious character showed up. Declan, as Declan always was, tenacious yet so patient and understanding. Goodness, I really love Declan. If there was ever a perfect guy, he’s the one. I also loved how Brooke finally able to work things on her own, set her priority right. It’s about time. I just hope she wouldn’t change her mind later.
And, OH, we now knew who Romeo was! Ha!
I was provided a complementary copy by the author / publisher, but this in no way influenced my thoughts or opinions.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this series, and can not get enough of Brooke and Declan!!!!! There were so many moments that I very loudly said OMG and WTF. And of course when the book ended I was going noooooooooooooo I want MORE!!! This is a must read series that has plenty of suspense, action and romance! I received a free copy of this book and volunteered to review it.
OMG! Another great book by Heather! The plot thickens as Brooke gets closer to finding out who Romeo is. It is unfortunate that Brooke's friend takes a hit! Brooke is finally realizing what she wants in life and Declan is the man to give it to her. Now Dimitri is an interesting character but he is not in this book too much. He does come to the rescue when Brooke needed it. The action in this book is definitely fast-paced and it will keep you on the edge of your seat. Just when you think things will calm down, they just escalate to the next level. Also, nothing like leaving a HUGH cliff-hanger. Can't wait for the next book!

A quick novella that doesn't have a case for Brooke and Declan, but it sure gives us more info into the mysterious Romeo! It also goes deeper into a future for our favorite couple and leaves us with a huge cliffhanger. Fast paced and fun, yet surprisingly emotional, this was a one bote book that I wish was more. We even got a look into Ty's personal life more! Is book 5 out yet?

I was beyond happy to get so many answers in this novella. If you are following the story, then this one is a must-read.
Sunseri does suspense so well that it's like a superpower. You will greedily turn each page with a finger swipe, and this time, you will even find yourself satisfied at the end. Because, even though you did not want it to end, you will have real answers! This is the turn in the Romeo plot line you have been waiting for- eagerly...or impatiently.
I am looking forward to the next book. Book 4 in a series is always a hard sell, and I usually start to lose interest by this point. Shot in Darkness is not the lull but rather the infusion of intrigue. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from the publisher.
I really enjoyed this! I love the way it moved the Romeo storyline along but there are still so many questions. I can't wait to learn more. I will be completely honest, I'm losing interest in the Brooke and Declan relationship. I love him and I'm almost to the point of wanting him to move on. I keep asking myself if the first love interest always has to be "the one?" Speaking of moving on, I LOVE Dimitri! I want to know more. There is just enough bad boy and mystery to get excited about. As always, I really enjoyed the action. This one didn't wrap up the main storyline like the others but I believe that wasn't the intended purpose here. Great book, great series!

The In the Darkness series keeps getting better and better. Heather Sunseri sure knows how to weave a book and make the characters so real that you tear up when they hurt and smile when they are happy. The fourth book in the series sees Brooke run away to D.C. after she feels that Declan gets too close to her, but Declan will not give up that easily. He tracks her down and with his heart open pushes Brooke to see why she really left. But a single moment is all it will take to change things drastically. Will they change forever? Or will there still be a happy ending to Brooke's life? I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from the publisher
Well...that packed a powerful punch for a novella.
It was beyond a fast paced wild ride. Every single book in this series gets better and better. Character development, fresh new twists every time. This book kept me holding my breath, love the conclusions that Brooke came to about Declan. And I can't wait to see what's next, I must say I'm looking forward to Romeo going down in a fiery ball of flames. Oh AND...Dimitri. THUD! I need more of him.
This writer is absolutely spot on in her story telling, she is a fresh brilliant voice in this genre. I'm so glad I found her through a friend!
Shot in Darkness is an intense addition to the In Darkness series. I inhaled this latest In Darkness book! I turned the last page and wanted MORE! There are many questions answered and more needing answers. Now that we have Romeo’s identity, what does that mean for Brooke? Will Declan and Dimitri’s past play a part somehow? What more is instore for our intriguing and beloved characters? I cannot wait to find out. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from the publisher.
This is the fourth book in the darkness series and could be read as a stand-a-lone, but more enjoyable if you've read the first three book. This series is well written, fast paced and has great characters. Lots of twists and more suspense than you can imagine. A page turner for sure and a great read. Declan is the best guy and it's hard not to want to take him home with you. A great read. I received an advance copy and voluntarily chose to review this book.
"Nooooooo!!!!!!" she wails into the night like a dying banshee. "You can't leave me there." It's not an actual cliff-hanger ending, but this book answers just enough questions to make me want to know more. NOW! This brings us one giant leap closer to Brooke bringing Romeo to justice: we finally have a real-world identity for him. The book also opens up several new avenues of investigation that we're left waiting to see how they'll pan out. Circumstances also force Brooke to deal with more of her emotional baggage and make decisions about her romantic past and future. I was already hooked on the series before reading this latest installment. Now I'll be counting down the seconds until we have the next book. I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book.
Heather Sunseri definitely knows how to capture her target audience. I love this Darkness series and this book held me captive from the time I started to read. Declan won't let Brooke run away, and Brooke isn't certain she can deal with their relationship. What's the problem? This woman seems to attract trouble no matter where she goes and it isn't always her stalker that is at the root of the problem. However, I think Romero has taken a more active role in this one. The suspense is killer....literally. She knows that this Romero is a scaring dude and yet she continues her search for him. She still believes he can answer her questions about Teddy's death. Stop the presses and stop looking for him on your own. After this book, and what he has apparently revealed, who is to say he isn't the one. You have to read it, but you really need to read from the beginning in order to understand the dynamics here. You won't be sorry.
4 stars. Shot in Darkness is the fourth book in the In Darkness series. If you have read the previous books it helps you understand the setting and the main characters. But this book can be read as a standalone. There isn't a cliffhanger at the end though it is open-ended for the next book in the series. There is violence and sex so 18+.
The book blurb adequately describes the storyline so I'm not going to repeat that info here. The main characters in the series are Brooke Fairfax and Declan O'Rourke. You easily get caught up in the emotions of the characters and story. There is plenty of action as well as twists and turns in the book. I really enjoyed this book and storyline. I look forward to reading more of Heather Sunseri's other books as well as future books in this series. I received a copy of this book from the author and chose to leave a review for other readers.
Shot in Darkness Another fantastic story by Heather Sunseri. I enjoyed this novella, where we finally learn more about Romeo and are ready to see this part reach a conclusion. Brooke is struggling after the ending of the precious book. She is still running from her past and fears repeating the pain that she has been through one more time. We learn a little more about some of the other characters, but this one is mainly about Brooke. There appears to be more going on in her head, than we might have originally thought, and I am ready for her to open up and share her thoughts and feelings with the ones who care about her. I'm sure that this will occur- in due time. This is a definite read for those who have been reading the series- good writing, fast action and never a dull moment. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from the publisher.
Heather Sunseri has done it again. I read the book in a day, because I was so interested in knowing what was going to happen next. And now I want to know what happens in the next book! (That there will hopefully be!)
This page turner has everything you could want in a good book: suspense, action, romance! I love trying to figure out what Brook knows before she reveals it. Heather Sunseri has a way of making you feel like you know the characters personally. The feelings are not always warm and fuzzy, but I feel like the characters could be my neighbors I know hem so well.
Outstanding quick read, that I highly recommend. Sunseri fills in enough back story, that you don't even need to have read the first 3 books in the series. (But you should because they're awesome, too!)
I received an adjvanced copy of this book for my for my unbiased review.
Of course, Brooke has stumbled into another murder plot, only this time, Declan may be a casualty. Will she be able to save hi and save herself when it's all said and done?
Well, I've got to say, while I appreciate the additional info on Romeo..I'm getting tired of this storyline..4 books and he's still around.. Brooke was snuck up on..AGAIN. For an agent, she can be sloppy.
This book gave us some clues to Romeos identity and that's great. Brooke is finally ready to really move forward with Declan..Ty and James almost made it to vacation..we're making progress.
Great read! Can't wait to wrap up this Romeo storyline though..
The only thing I didn't like about this book is that it wasn't longer! Author Heather Sunseri manages to pack a ton of suspense, action and romance into this shortest installment of the "In Darkness" series. My favorite part was the deeper glimpse into Romeo, the man who's been stalking protagonist Brooke Fairfax. I also enjoyed the development of Brooke's relationship with Declan O'Roarke. Although it's easy for the reader to see the two of them together, I really think it makes Brooke that much more relateable that she's something unsure of how the two of them would work out. I loved that this came out so soon after the last one, and I can't wait until the next one! I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from the publisher.
Novella that semi wraps up the series 1-4 but there is still a major mystery that will be revealed in book 5. Brooke is again involved in the mystery of Romeo - who he is and why he is stalking her. She is also running from Declan as he wants to marry her and she is so gun shy after her 1st husband was murdered, she can't bear to see Declan hurt because of her job/danger/stalker. There is a shooting which draws them into danger again. Declan is so attractive, sweet and swoony, he is all in and tries not to pressure her but wants them to get on with life. Can hardly wait for book 5 to solve the mystery of Romeo.
Maybe I should have read this series from the beginning to feel if our main characters really have chemistry or something.
I opted to read this one first because aside from being short, Andrew Eiden is one of the narrators ( a bit disappointed because he just narrated a few chapters). Anyway, this series reminds me of the Fatal series by Marie Force and as my first book from this author, it is a delight to read suspense that is not really that dark, after all. Obsessive, sure, but at least it was not gloomy and brooding, if you know what I mean.
I enjoyed this quick read from the 'in darkness' series. Some of these characters really get me thinking and contemplating what they're thinking and why they're doing what they're doing. I was glad to find out more about Romeo. I think it answered a lot of necessary questions about his who and why, but still leaves it open for more information to come out in future books.

Brooke is running scared and runs to Washington DC in hopes to sort her feelings out. Dec!an follows her in hopes to find out where her thoughts are. When the two end up facing the truth Brooke realizes that she is in love with Dec!an but will she be able to avoid additional senseless murders before she can pledge her love for Declan?
This is a novella but there is a lot of information packed into this short story.
In this novella, Heather continues to intrigue us with more of Romeo's story, and she puts Brooke and Declan's future on the line. I love Heather's writing and avidlylook forward to more from her. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from the publisher.
