Wow! A intriguing steam punk with a touch of the paranormal

Suspense, mystery, betrayal Oh My! Now for anyone who has read my reviews or seen my read and to be read list, you know I love the Paranormal. So when I came upon this title and read the synopsis, I just had to try this book. I wasn't disappointed. The story just flowed and I could picture everything the author described. As soon the man on the train with the scar first appeared and the somewhat unicorn showed up it was obvious that genetic engineering was at play. I had a hard time putting the book down , then comes the wolf. My favorite animal. The preacher kind of gave himself away by all the stuff of divine intervention. At first I thought he was the wolf then it started to make sense. He was a bit cuckoo with deciding who lives and who dies.

Now that Aareth has been bitten I'm guessing he's going to become a wolf. Now I have to find out what happens in the next book. I'm going to say Sloan will not be happy with what's coming and I can't wait to see what she does.

Wow! Where to start. I have to say this has been one of the most amazing books I've read this year. It has some really unique stuff in it. And talk about a wild ride, there was never a dull moment. I wish it would be made into a movie. It would be better than Harry Potter! I know the excerpt read like it was mainly focused on Sloan, but there was just as much, if not more, about Jack in it. I absolutely loved the characters. Jack and his father, Marcus, have been asked by the queen to go to the Outlands to hunt down a creature that is killing residents. Jack and Marcus are Sorcerers and the best at tracking. Aereth is also chosen for the journey. He was once an inspector in New Hope where the Queen resides. You will love Sloan's character. At first I was thinking, "Oh no, not another female heroine in an Urban Fantasy!" Those are a dime a dozen. But no, this is nothing like your average Urban Fantasy these days. I was reading until 3am and on such an emotional high after the end that I couldn't sleep. There were times I had to stop and reread because I was so in awe at what was happening. Things I thought for sure I knew was going on, only to find out I was way off. It was great! During the first part they have tracked a creature you think you know what it is. But it's something I would've never guessed. It blew my mind. How does this author dream up this stuff? He's amazing! And the things the ragtag team encounter along the way are something else. This reads like an alternate reality. Jack has always lived in the Outlands so he has never been to the city of New Hope. He gets to see the inventions of Edison and his Mage powered engines, like the locomotive. I felt like we were in the dark ages coming to the future. His adventures lead him to steel horses, lol. Or, I think they also called them mage powered bicycles. It's like different realms come together. It all makes sense though and is very well written. The town of Burrow Den, where creature has been attacking, is so strange. You will meet some odd people there. And this opens up a whole new can of worms. We are getting set up for some really great adventures in the next books. I can't wait to find out what lies ahead! Don't worry, there's not a cliff hanger at the end. The mission gets completed, but we also discover some new things that are tied to it. It will be interesting to see what happens.

An intriguing paranormal, steampunk, supernatural story!

House of Wolves is a quick and fun read with plenty of surprising twists that pop out of nowhere. The queen of New Hope dispatches Sloan (the captain of her personal guard) Aereth (former inspector and assassin) and Marcus and Jack (father and son sorcerers) to help the outlying city of Burrow Den. Burrow Den has had multiple attacks by an unknown animal/monster. The queen is trying to build good relationships with the outlying cities and has agreed to help. She sends the four out on this quest . Little did they know, there is so much more going on. They are almost assassinated, they crash their transportation, and find all kinds of quirks and craziness along the way and when they arrive at Burrow Den. Now they need to find the culprit. Animal or human? Who and what is going on?

The world building was interesting to follow. The way it is described leaves a little to the imagination but this is really great because in my mind I had several different ways it could all be set up. When I read the synopsis I thought I would be following Sloan, and only Sloan. It is a little misleading. We follow the entire group and the story is told from all of their points of view. I feel like this book is a cross between Steampunk and Supernatural. Not at all like the technology that we have but they have magic powered tech too. This was a fun book to read. Truly unique. And the investigating that the group do will keep you right in the middle of the story. This is the first book that I have read by Jonathan Yanez and won't be the last. I am looking forward to the next!

REALLY not what I was expecting...but ....

A book that kept me turning the pages wanting to read more, learn more.

The world has been created amazingly. Part eighteenth/ nineteenth century era mixed with magic. For example - they've discovered trains that run on "mage fuel" - as do lights.

The history is brought forward but not in a "yawn REALLY?" kinda way, it's slipped in filling in the gaps you didn't realise were there.

We are basically following four individuals who were summoned by the queen to go to a close by town in need of help.

One is Captain of the Queens guard, another a former member of the law enforcement but turned assassin and two mages.

The trouble behind pretty much as soon as the train gets closer to the end of where the line has been built to....

......and the driver has accidentally been shot and the train really doesn't want to stop.

I can't help but feel this book is merely a setting the scene book. A stepping stone.

There are way too many loose ends right now and tip of the iceberg has only been wiggled!!!

A very unusual book, but one that helps your imagination run away with you.
A book that's left it's covers wide open in invitation to the second book to add itself in.

I guess it's one I need to get!!!!!

House of Wolves - a review by Rosemary Kenny

House of Wolves is Book 1 of a 5 book series The Vampire Project, by the prolific genius Jonathan Yanez. It starts like a 'traditional' fairy story in the Grimm Brothers' style, updated for the 21st century, with a hero(ine) and brave fellow-combatants overcoming a dreadful evil - witch. sorcerer, demon,or wolf and having a love interest to 'gain the hand of', to lead to a HEA.
But that's about as far as the comparison goes, as Captain of Queen Eleanor's New Hope Army Charlotte Sloan, is a feisty female, who can kick-ass with the best of her troops and proves able to conquer any and all enemies - even the supernatural ones!
She and reforming assassin Aereth, join forces with 'Outsider' warlocks, [father and son] Marcus and Jack at the Queen's command, to seek and destroy the predator who's been killing townsfolk in the hamlet of Burrow Den (a Hobbit-like community).
What the questers find on their mission will be nothing like whatever you'd imagine and not only their bodies, but their minds and their very souls may be in peril.
Although a series-starter, House of Wolves is complete and without a cliffhanger in sight, which is very refreshing. Book 2 is clearly going to be a real treat!

The captain of the Queen's personal guard, an assassin and two mages must hunt down a vicious creature that is killing townspeople in the Outlands.

Not really what I was expecting, but it was okay. Lots of action, but I just couldn't connect to a single character or to the world at all. The world-building itself was all over the place, with "magical" technology that really seemed like science (yes, yes, I understand the advanced technology is just the same as science quote, but this was a little odd), the rando presence of gnomes, and the use of swords over guns when guns were obviously present. I was a little turned off by Sloan—who would have been an awesome character if developed a little better—because I'm exhausted by the trope that women can only be respected if they best every. single. man. at unmanned combat. How exhausting. And demeaning in that the only respectable thing is your physical strength.

This has the seeds of being something really great, but I think it could have used a little more editing, for the pacing, grammar and general spell check.

Different but good

I actually have enjoyed the storyline of the Hunters Call. I liked the style of the new inventions, regarding to steam engineering, cleverly done. And very detailed description.
They all where a great team, Sloan, Aareth, Jack and Markus. I really loved the father of Jack, he truly was a great Men in this team.

At the start you had really great details at the action with Sloan, same with Aareth. They both quite fast and strong fighters. But those strong skills have been somehow missing at the bid action when there all arrived at the town, to help and find out what has happened. Somehow they all less strong with those extra magic weapons they all got. This was a bit disappointed, still the fight scenes were good, but I got the impression that they have been stronger without the weapons.
The development of the characters are at a good pace, as well the storyline had a good a strong plot. I do look forward to the next one.

This book seems to straddle more than one genre-- a mix of steampunk, quest saga, paranormal (sorcerers), and detective/mystery. The blurb and title are somewhat misleading, but I think that has something to do with the genre mix, it's hard to know what to focus on in the synopsis as the author is trying to appeal to multiple audiences. The plot was good- transparent in places and twisty-surprising in others. I would have enjoyed more depth to each of the characters, but the story line was entertaining enough to hold my interest.

Great story

I don't know why I keep being surprised by this author and how much I like his books.
More than just a writer he's becoming a storyteller, pulling you into his books so fully it seems like I'm right there in the story. I haven't found many who can tell a story that well and actually only two come to mind, one is Harold Robbins and the other is Stephen King, very different genres to be sure but incredible in the way they suck you into their stories... Jonathan is becoming a storyteller like they are.

House of something...

I didn't really know what to expect but I was intrigued. Well worth reading...a story of four people brought together to help a town with mysterious deaths, secret labs, and a town living in fear. Interesting series that I can't wait to find out what happens next

A really good story with a mix of Paranormal, mystery, and a steampunk vibe, The characters are well fleshed out, the world building is really good.with a cast of miss matched would be heroes, makes a truly enjoyable book. It does need a little bit of proof reading, there were many times in the book where Sloan was referred to as "he" it was a tad confusing.

Good novel

The book went by fast. The subject matter was interesting and the world was well thought out. I like the characters and the author took the right amount of time helping readers get to know them. I enjoyed it but the book left a lot unsaid and I look forward to the next book.

What a great book

I don't think I have ever read a paranormal book like this one. Great story that keeps you reading from page one until you finish the book. Sloan, Jack, the Inspector and Jack's father made this book. Don't want to give anything away, but you have to get this book. A small cliffhanger, but you will not mind.

Shoot I’m behind with these. Lets see House of Wolves is good and feels like a beginning. Whereas the book is fast paced, the plot itself is slow going. Sloan takes a while to get used to. I liked the father and son combo but I think my favourite is the Ghost. Drawn together to solve a mystery the four become like a small family, I like their interactions as pairings and as a group. Didn’t end on a cliffhanger per se but left enough open to want to read the next one.

Title: House Of Wolves
Author: Jonathan Yanez
Genre: Adult, Fantasy
Format: Ebook
Pages: 215
Rating: 4
Heat: 1

Thoughts: Interesting start to a promising new series! As with many new series, book one is a little slow at first, building the world for the reader. And this one is no exception, but I will say it was a great taste into what the characters are facing. About the characters, not the type to come together on their own, this mismatched band end up uncovering something more sinister than just some wild animal attacking and killing people. I look forward to reading more of this series, it’s a mix of dystopian, paranormal, and a hint of steampunk but instead of steam it’s mage power. It’s quite interesting.

Oh my goodness! What just happened? I'm so floored right now by this first book. So much is going on I'm overwhelmed with emotion. There is violence, love, passion, fighting, betrayal. It's insane. Well I'm ready to find out what is next.

GREAT FANTASY

From start to finish this story was action packed. I love when a book moves forward without having stalls in the action. There is plenty of mystery to go around and great finish for book one. I look forward to the next story.

Great start to the series!

I love Jonathan Yanez books and it amazes me how different each series is! I love the primarily fantasy with a hint of science fiction feel to The Vampire Project series.

Not something for me.

I don't like this kind of writing style where the "good" are strong, proud, righteous with toned athletic bodies.
The villains are small, stupid, clumsy, confused, ugly, evil vicious "snakes".

The storyline is excellent but does get broken by the dialogue at times. It is worth finishing and I will be reading the next book as soon as possible.

Nope.

I tried. I ignored when homophones started cropping up (ruins vs runes). I kept reading when useless trivia was dumped for no apparent reason (the flag was red...and had a symbol for power on it. Yay).

I kept reading because there occasionally was a glimmer of imagination mixed with a bit of whimsy. The plot seemed to stagger along well enough. The prose was...not actively bad.

Then the sex of one of the main characters fluctuated at a random moment.

PROOFREAD YOUR WORK!!!!

Yes, indie, so the money is tight or non-existent.

But...this is your brand. I stopped reading because I tired of tripping over simple, obvious mistakes. I stopped reading which means I will NOT buy the next book. I will not buy any more books from this author because quality control does not appear to happen.

I'm not asking for flawless prose. Simply reduce the visible error rate below 1 in 200 words. It needs to be less than one mistake per page. And this wasn't.

Wow

This book is amazing. Seeing magic used as a fuel for most everyday things is quite wonderful. But watching for very different people embark on a journey to help the Queen is a must read
