New Dead #3

Dead: Suffer the Children

Rate this book
Evan has returned. After fighting his way back, he discovers that his former encampment has been overrun in a brutal attack. Unsure of what to do, he is eventually forced into action by an approaching herd of the undead numbering in the thousands. It is then that he suffers more stings of betrayal and once again encounters Don Evans.

Running for his life again, Evan decides to make a run for a place he feels is suitable and safe. Along the way, he encounters more of the dregs of humanity, a woman who seems like she was pulled from an action-hero adventure, as well as survivors just looking for hope.

Through it all, he continues to encounter the "zombie children" that act very different from the adult variety. Do they still possess some sense of their humanity? Or are they simply just more dangerous?

Tucked away in the Pacific Northwest with my wife Denise, a Border Collie named Aoife, a guitar collection, and an increasing number of aquariums sporting a variety of fish (cichlids are my new favorites), I live for football season when I can cheer on the Oregon Ducks and be disappointed by my Seattle Seahawks once again. I am a fan of Cookie Monster, KISS, and Dr. Who (along with most things British).

As a person who always dreamed of writing as well as one completely enthralled by all things zombie, it is hard to believe that I never once considered writing in the genre. It is true. I wanted to be more “mainstream”. The first novel I actually wrote is titled Dakota (as Todd Brown). It is about a pair of DEA types tossed back in time to just prior to the start of the Civil War. They are in Charleston, South Carolina, and one of them is an African-American.

The zombie thing really started when I wrote a short for a college Creative Writing class. The teacher, Ms. Bose, pulled me up and told me I had an obvious love for the subject and a real talent for the style. I decided to give it a shot.

The first thing I cobbled together was Zomblog. I wrote it as a warm up for the project I had brewing in the back of my mind. It is a journal account of the apocalypse. The funny thing is that it was never intended to be published. A few things happened and it ended up being presented to me as a gift in book format by my wife for a Christmas present. There was something I will never forget about holding the copy of that book in my hand the first time.
Because it gained a readership, and those readers asked for more, I made it a trilogy (Zomblog, Zomblog II, and Zomblog: The Final Entry). It is also because of those fans that I have returned to the Zomblog universe and just released the sixth (and FINAL) book in the series on Halloween of 2013: Zomblog: Snoe's Journey. I freely admit that I will sellout my plans to write what the fans ask for.

I really want my DEAD series to be what I am known for, and in the last year, it has really taken off. However, I will say that with the release of the fourth book in the DEAD series (DEAD: Winter), the numbers started to pick up beyond my wildest dreams.

The DEAD series (DEAD: The Ugly Beginning, DEAD: Revelations, and DEAD: Fortunes & Failures, DEAD: Winter, DEAD: Siege & Survival, DEAD: Confrontation, DEAD: Reborn) is scheduled to be a 12 part epic series.

It is told in three rotating chapters. One is from the first person perspective of Steve Hobart, a man thrust into the role of leader for a group of survivors struggling to keep alive. One chapter follows a group of four self-professed zombie “geeks” who initially believe that the zombie apocalypse would be fun and soon discover that it is nothing like the movies. The third of the rotating chapters is called “Vignettes” and is a series of snapshots from all around the world. Some of the vignettes are single chapter episodes, others are continuing threads that carry on for several chapters. A few are merged into the Steve story or the Geek story line.

Last year,I began my horror/comedy series, "That Ghoul Ava" and have found it to be my new guilty pleasure.

Love/Hate

Why that headline? I didn’t think I’d like this new series, the first book Dead: Onset, I wasn’t a fan of the main character Evan, the story was great, I just didn’t like our reluctant hero. The first series I instantly liked 2 characters Steve and Kevin, I think with this new series I just missed those previous “heroes”, but with this 3rd book I have embraced all of the people and fear for them (TW has this ability to make you forget you’re reading fiction). And why the fear? Mr. Brown has no problem killing off main characters, he does it all the time, Even Evan had no guarantee that he will be around, so why keep reading, great story telling that’s why. If you have a love for zombie fiction, give this a try. Hope you enjoy.

Good review

Again,I let you know that this is a good review in the subject line so that you wouldn't have to steel yourself, lol.... I should just have made a copy of my first review because the new Dead series is as outstanding as the first twelve volumes of Dead - the original series. I hope you have many more volumes of the New Dead Series stashed away in that marvelous mind of yours..... All I can say is "Keep on writing." I think I will re-read Zomblog now. Have a wonderful day!!!!

Hmmm. I liked it.

I liked the story and I like the way the writer put it all together, along with the alternative zombie type. I enjoyed the authors love of his dog too. I'm a Leo k9 handler and love that aspect! But I must say, I REPEATEDLY overlooked this series due to the AWFUL covers. It completely detracts from the quality story. The covers are awful. Even a black cover with title would be significantly better!

I love the stories and character development of this newer series. I'm not crazy about the zombie children... But, thankfully there is enough story around the children, so there was more than just that. I have followed and highly recommend this author to anyone! The first dead series was incredible! Zomblog-Amazing! He honestly hasn't written anything I haven't thoroughly enjoyed.

Where's the Beef?

Suffer the Children is somewhat interesting but, at times repartitious. Evan's doubts are annoying. If your gut is telling you that man is no good go with it. There is something lacking in the storytelling that fails to draw me in completely. Where's the beef?

A must read

A phenomenal third book in the New READ series by TW Brown, Dead: Suffer The Children kept my interest and left me wanting another book. Action, drama, bad guys, creep zombie Children, and the awesome Chewie... Yep, this book delivers! Definitely recommend.

Finished the series. I especially liked the cats aspect of the story line. Also liked the short stories at the end of the books on how some of these people became zombies. Aside from a few typos, it was a good storyline.
