A mysterious message from a midnight duelist sends fashion reporter Maddie Hatter to New York's finest parasol dueling academy, where she foils a daring daylight kidnapping.
The grateful rescuee, only daughter of an American Steamlord, offers Maddie a job as her bodyguard. Soon both young ladies are up to their lace gloves in industrial intrigue and irrepressible street urchins.
Maddie's clockwork bird faces danger too: hungry owls, curious inventors, even a clockwork foe that hides sneaky tricks behind its jewel-green eyes.
From the mansions of Park Avenue to the Statue of Liberty, Maddie hunts a fearless spy and confronts an unexpected power from her past.
Two words: parasol dueling. If that phrase fills you with joy, you will almost certainly love this book. I really enjoyed the first Maddie Hatter adventure, Maddie Hatter and the Deadly Diamond, and the follow-up was just as enchanting. Maddie Hatter is the alter ego of Madeleine Main-Bearing, the daughter of a Steamlord and fashion journalist. Hemmed in by her sex and social standing, she seeks freedom under a new name and disguises, thirsty for juicier stories to tell. She's enticed to the parasol dueling academy by the promise of a scoop by the mysterious Emmy Gat. Scenes of parasol dueling absolutely steal the show here. Barnard's descriptions of the moves from various dueling disciplines and their fanciful names are a delight. Emmy Gat's scoop is initially a bust, but Maddie starts an acquaintance with Emmeline Gauge, daughter of an American steamlord, which gives her an interesting job as a bodyguard and a front-row view of some mysterious happenings. Complicating matters is the arrival of her father to the Gauge home.
Maddie is again a delight, and the new locale and mystery serve her well. Barnard makes the differences between American and English technology and social norms fascinating, and did I mention the fabulous parasol dueling? There are plenty of plot twists to keep Maddie busy and the action moving along, and new and familiar supporting characters round out the cast. My only complaints about this book are that it's too short and I have to wait too long for the third in the series.
Another fun entry in the series. This time, Maddie is in a steampunk version of New York City. I enjoyed all of the new characters Maddie meets, and actually wish they would continue in the series.
Maddie Hatter and the Gilded Gauge is the second book in the steampunk trilogy by Canadian author, Jayne Barnard. Maddie Hatter is the daughter of a rich English Steam Lord but has left home to strike out on her own. She doesn't want her father to arrange a marriage for her. So as described in the 1st book, she now works as a reporter for a London newspaper, under the pseudonym of Maddie Hatter, writing about fashion and the lives of the rich and famous.
She also spies for Madame Taxus - Hemlock. Madame provided Maddie with TD a mechanical sparrow who helps Maddie with her cases, recording information, taking photos, communicating with Madame through her hawks and other mechanics.
So, Maddie is now in New York and meets one Emmeline Gatsby-Gauge at a ladies' umbrella academy, a sporting institution where they also learn to duel with parasols. Yup.. you read it correctly. Emmeline decides to hire Maddie as a bodyguard of sorts. There have been attempts to kidnap Emmeline and she hopes Maddie can help her find out who. Oh yes, Emmeline also has a bit of an alter ego, Emmy Gat, where she disguises herself and helps orphans.
Emmy's father has invented a gauge that he hopes to sell. Various Steam Lords, including Maddie's father (Yipes!) are coming to New York to meet with Emmy's father to try and buy into his gauge program. Someone is trying to steal the gauge or the plans for building it and a Russian Lady is suspected.
OK, well, that's sort of the gist of the story. It's a bit convoluted but always interesting and entertaining. The people are interesting. The orphans who help Emmy Gat are like the Dead End kids, rambunctious, adventurous and always willing to help Emmy and Maddie resolve the mystery of who is trying to kidnap Emmy and help protect the gauge from being stolen. As well, Maddie's two friends, Hiram and Obie, both introduced in the first book, also are always available.
The chase moves around New York with a climactic ending at the Statue of Liberty. All good fun and adventure. One more book to read. (3.0 stars)
In may I bought and fell in love with the first book, was equally impressed with book two. Maddie Hatter has become one of my most favorite characters and I would put this book up there with the Harry Potter series in terms of my enjoyment! In Maddie Hatter and the Gilded Gauge, Maddie is in New York, she stumbles upon some great stories to write about as her alter egos W.Y. Knott and for her fashion column she writes under the name Maddie Hatter! With the help of her trusty clockwork bird TD, her new found friends and employer Maddie helps to foil a plot to steal a closely guarded gauge! I loved learning about Steampunk culture through this book, about all the marvelous inventions and names for everyday items used in the book. This story is set in what I think is best described as an alternative victorian area New York, but with a very modern day feel. This book had me dreaming of clockwork birds, international spies, parasol dueling (yes it is a real thing!) and Zeppelins. I did not want this book to end and I anxiously await the October arrival of book three!
“another well-crafted, fast-paced mystery laden with intrigue; a romp through steampunk New York”
“this world of steam-driven machinery, inventions, airships, clockwork-type animated birds seems as real as our own”

This second adventure finds Maddie in steampunk New York where the technology may lag behind that of the Continent but the criminals are no less devious. Maddie accepts the role of protector for Miss Emmeline Gatsby-Gage, daughter of a newly affluent American Steamlord whose not-yet-licenced invention makes the young lady a ransom target. The responsibility takes Maddie on a swashbuckling pursuit through the streets of a New York City skewed through a funhouse lens. Even with the aid of familiar friends, real and clockwork, and the support of a band of street urchins led by the cheeky Cat Cheshire—Oliver with a steampunk twist—Maddie must use her wits and her formidable skills in the deadly art of parasol duelling to keep her charge—and herself—safe.
In this page-turning escapade Barnard skillfully and economically drops in just enough information to keep the reader captivated by an alternate history where airships, spy-spiders, and a segmented, rotating Statue of Liberty are not only believable but leave us wondering what other devices she’ll dream up for Maddie’s next adventure.
This is one of those books that pop you into the life of a real steam punk double delight of a lady. Highly adventurous, slightly mysterious, great for young adults and those of us who are young at heart. Do yourself a favor by popping into Maddie's world for a fun time!
I was very excited to read this book (#2 in the Maddie Hatter series). I am delighted to say I met the author, Jayne Barnard, and she signed my copy of the book! Jayne is a delight and so much fun. Please pick up your copies of this book and book #1 Maddie Hatter and the Deadly Diamond. You will not be disappointed.
Maddie Hatter has become a favorite character. I love her spunk, her attitude to life and her ability to get things done. The engaging characters, the setting and the plot make this book a fun read and one that young and old can enjoy.
Thank you Jayne! Now I shall wait, impatiently I might add, for book #3!
In this second book, we catch up to Maddie in New York. After following a mysterious tip, she ends up acting as a bodyguard for a young lady, and it's not long before trouble comes looking for them both. With car chases and kidnappings, Ms. Barnard takes us quickly into the action in a steam powered version of New York that has its own twist on the Statue of Liberty. Come for the parasol duels, but stick around for the steam-powered scooter. Maddie will need all of her parasol combat skills and the help of a ragtag group of orphans to survive ruthless industrial spies intent on stealing the secret of the Gatsby Gauge.
This book is quirky and engaging, a fantasic story driven by a strong female lead. The steampunk world Barnard has built is well executed and intriguing. While this is the econd book in the series I still found it a coherent read even though I have not yet read the first book. A must read for every young girl!
Meddie Hatter and the Gilded Gauge The author has done it aegean, I loved this book from beginning to end and I have to say I still want a TD. The characters and plot are fantastic and I can not wait to see what maddie gets into in the next book.
