Zombie Science: More Icons of Evolution
In 2000, biologist Jonathan Wells took the science world by storm with Icons of Evolution , a book showing how biology textbooks routinely promote Darwinism using bogus evidence—icons of evolution like Ernst Haeckel’s faked embryo drawings and peppered moths glued to tree trunks. Critics of the book complained that Wells had merely gathered up a handful of innocent textbook errors and blown them out of proportion. Wells joined the Unification Church in 1974, and subsequently wrote that the teachings of its founder Sun Myung Moon and his own studies at the Unification Theological Seminary and his prayers convinced him to devote his life to "destroying Darwinism."

In this book, Wells demolishes many icons of evolution. It is a brief book which does a very good job of showing much of the "evidence" given to support evolution is, in fact, incorrect, and at times downright fraudulent. Although written in an entertaining and witty style, Wells presents his arguments in a very clear and concise way. Many of the icons destroyed in this book I have had real dealings with in talking with friends to reading articles in the Encylopedia Brittanica. Highly recommend.

Not long ago I sat next an entomologist on a flight from Ontario, CA to Denver. During our conversation he tried to convince me that there is no difference between micro- and macro-evolution. Hey, if you’re out there, you need to read this book! (I mean that in the nicest way.)
In addition to a review of the 10 examples illustrated in his book, Icons of Evolution, Wells discusses micro-evolution, walking whales, DNA, antibiotics, cancer, the human eye, the appendix and other new icons of evolution.
He says his first book was criticized as nitpicking minor mistakes, but if so why were these “mistakes” not corrected? They still persist in science textbooks, proliferating zombies joined by new zombies, hence the title.
Though not a scientist, I have gained a better understanding of the arguments that invalidate macro-evolution from reading this book. Sincere seekers of truth should read it.

Don’t you want to read a book that would likely get you fired if you were a scientist seen reading it? What are they afraid of?
I was a bit skeptical when I picked up Zombie Science, but it’s very well researched and cited. While I thought it got a bit snarky at times, the case-examples provided by Wells were overwhelmingly convincing. It’s also an enjoyable read that flows well, and attempts to let the “zombies” speak for themselves. After reading it, I’m left shaking my head. Materialist scientists are just as religious as anyone else; they just hold their theory as religion. Read this book. You won’t regret it. And yeah, I want to read a book that people say scientists could lose their jobs over.

THE INTELLIGENT DESIGN BIOLOGIST CONTINUES HIS CRITIQUE OF EVOLUTION
Author and biologist Jonathan Wells wrote in the first chapter of this 2017 book, “Zombies are the walking dead. In science, a theory or image is dead when it doesn’t fit the evidence. I wrote a book [‘Icons of Evolution’] in 2000 about ten images, ten ‘icons of evolution,’ that did not fit the evidence and were empirically dead. They should have been buried, but they are still with us, haunting our science classrooms and stalking our children. They are part of what I call zombie science… whenever people persist in defending a materialistic explanation after it has been shown to be inconsistent with the evidence, and is thus empirically dead, they are practicing zombie science. We find the most prominent displays of zombie science in evolutionary biology.” (Pg. 15, 18) He adds, “A person does not have to believe in materialism to believe in evolution, but evolution is a materialistic story. And since the materialistic story trumps the evidence, it is zombie science.” (Pg. 22)
He observes, “The reason Science Says that ALL species must have descended from common ancestors is that materialistic science abhors he idea that any of them were created. According to materialistic science, creation is rules out from the start… and if creation is not allowed, then the tree of life wins by default, whatever the evidence. Notice that such reasoning cannot be defended on the grounds of methodological naturalism. Someone operating within the framework of methodological naturalism could decide that the true history of life is beyond the reach of empirical science and move on to more tractable problems. But nothing forces such a person to assume a materialistic conclusion that has been refuted by the evidence. Evolutionists who insist there MUST be a materialistic tree of life… are practicing not methodological naturalism but philosophical naturalism.” (Pg. 47)
Of origin-of-life researchers, he states, “this story consists entirely of assumptions. IF… simple chemistry led to the synthesis of biological building blocks, and IF these building blocks assembled themselves into primitive cells, etc., etc. None of these steps have been empirically demonstrated. In fact, origin-of-life research has been spectacularly unsuccessful. The Miller-Urey experiment is just one of its many dead ends… And prebiotic synthesis would be just the first step. Even if we could explain now life’s chemical building blocks formed on the early Earth, we would still be a very long way from explaining how they assembled themselves into a living cell.” (Pg. 55-56)
He points out, “biology textbooks started using photos of a four-winged fruit fly to show students what mutations can accomplished. But the mutant four-winged fruit fly lost its balancers in the bargain. Worse, the mutant wings do not have any flight muscles. So the four-winged fly has great difficulty flying and mating, and it cannot survive for long outside the laboratory. It is a sideshow freak, and evolutionary dead end. Yet some textbooks in 2000 featured photos of four-winged fruit flies, and some continue to do so.” (Pg. 71)
Of the proposed evolutionary sequence of whales, he says, “Basilosaurus and Dorudon were contemporaries, and the fossil records of some of the others overlapped each other. All of the ‘walking whales’ … are reconstructed from incomplete skeletons… and Kutchicetus was actually smaller than Maiacetus or Ambulocetus. In any case, none of the fossils … were ancestors or descendants of the others.” (Pg. 102) He continues, “None of these animals are really whales, or even close. Otters and sea lions are amphibious land animals that spend some of their lives in water, but whales, dolphins, and porpoises spend ALL of their lives in the water coming onto land is not a natural act for cetaceans; beached whales die if they are not quickly helped back into the water… Why not just call them what they were: amphibious mammals that spent part of their lives on land and part of their lives in water?” (Pg. 103)
He argues that the human appendix is not “vestigial”: “we now know that the human appendix is not useless. Instead, it has at least two functions: One is to help fight infections; the other is to provide a safe haven for beneficial bacteria… The appendix … is part of the human immune system. This system fights infections by recognizing molecules called antigens on the surface of harmful viruses and bacteria, then producing antibodies that lock only those antigens to target the harmful cells for destruction.” (Pg. 116-117)
He notes of so-called “Junk DNA,” “Not only were RNAs being transcribed from much of our so-called ‘junk DNA,’ but more and more of those RNAs were also turning out to serve important functions… Since 2010 there has been a virtual flood of new reports of functions in RNAs … [that] help to specify the three-dimensional structure of chromosomes, and their three-dimensional positioning inside the nucleus, both of which have profound effects on gene expression… More functions of such RNAs are discovered every month.” (Pg. 128)
Of the so-called ‘blind spot’ in the eye, he says, “The blind spot is not a serious problem, first of all because it is so small and second of all because the blind spot produced by the left eye is not in the same place as the blind spot produced by the right eye. This means that in humans with two good eyes, the field of vision of one eye covers for the blind spot of the other eye, and vice versa.” (Pg. 144-145)
He states, “The proliferation of antibiotic resistance is clearly an example of microevolution, but it is just as clearly not an example of macroevolution. Bacteria that become resistant to antibiotics do not thereby become new species. Yet many people in the scientific establishment routinely equivocate on the word ‘evolution,’ switching back and forth between microevolution and macroevolution as though they were the same thing.” (Pg. 155)
He concludes, “Scientists who explicitly accept intelligent design are also developing the paradigm with empirical research… So despite fierce opposition from establishment science, scientific inference in intelligent design is growing. In fact, its growth took an upward turn in 2016. Because evolution’s defenders currently control public funding for science… ID must rely on private funding. In 2016, the Discovery Institute in Seattle received a grant to fund more than a dozen research projects directed by ID-friendly scientists at universities around the world. Here comes the sun, and the reign of zombie science is coming to an end.” (Pg. 186-187)
This book will be “must reading” for Creationists and IDers interested in critiques of evolutionary theory.

IN 2000, molecular biologist Dr. Jonathan Wells surged a storm by publishing Icons of Evolution. This book disturbed ardent evolutionist across america. He showed that the proposed evidences for evolution i.e. the icons of evolution-are not so plain and simple as evolutionists try to depict. Rather it's full of problems, sometimes outright lies! His confident destruction of Haeckel's fraudulent drawing of embryonic similarity forced national academy giant Bruce Albert, to retract those drawing from the book which was written by Albert!!
So, that begged the question-If evidences for evolution are so convincing, why is then these icons promoted as solid proof for evolution- which is full of confusion, contradiction and deception? Now Dr. Wells present more icons of evolution and let the readers think for himself. Enjoyable read.

This book discusses issues at a superficial level for anyone to understand. Chapter 4 left wanting a deeper explanation as to why the "DNA makes protein make you" line of thought is incorrect. Also the Discovery Institute is pro ID, but not YEC.

This is a proper followup/sequel to Icons of evolution and the Politically incorrect guide to Darwinism. When I read his previous works, I did not appreciate Jonathan Wells' wittiness. Evidently, my reading comprehension in English has improved over the years. I minored in biol, but JW's ability to almost casually distill such variegated subtopics of biological sciences, especially with new findings in the field since I distanced from the discipline, was impressive. I'd say.. wow, cool.
I have great respect for the ID proponents, especially because of their courage. The mainstream caricatures are just caricatures. This author and his colleagues are some of the most intelligent yet humble men. Anyway, it was a fun book. Whether you agree with the author or not, it should be a fun read. Well, actually, in my experience (looking back at my college years), those that disagree tend to be disagreeable when it comes to any discussion involving Darwinism, ID, and/or other origins scenarios, so maybe I'm wrong. Whatevs.

Great buy
Any evolutionist wanting to argue his philosophical materialistic case - watch out! I now have all the weapons of sound reasoning behind me, every word spoken by Jonathan Wells will empower me in this ridiculous battle. I have never understood why people even listen to the evolutionist garbage. I work as a teacher and try my utmost to open the eyes of my students to the absolute miracle of God's design. One must be incredibly obtuse to the point of moronic to buy into the evolutionist theory. I have taught science and have been called to the principal's office for refusing to teach evolution. Instead I taught exquisite design involving the most advanced and stunning intelligence. I told the kids if they wanted to study evolution they could do it on their own, but warned them they were falling in the category of believers in the flat earth, believers in a sun revolving around earth, and witches flying on brooms. Thanks Jonathan.

A great book! The book was entertaining, informative and well-referenced. It stayed on point telling us what it said it would tell us and not wandering into the weeds off the beaten path. I can't say who is right on evolution; if it was possible for life as we know it to evolve its complexity, but; I can say there is a lot of political problem with the game evolutionists play subverting those arguing that evolution is a failure (at least in arguing it's the origin of species). If you're interested at all in the question (not closed minded on the issue), then you'll love this book for the questions it asks (as I do).

Well written and insightful, a must read for anyone that truly loves science (at least, loves truth more than feelings). Mr Wells addresses key aspects that have been falsified 100% and yet are still in today's science textbooks and lectures. This is quite shocking, most of us can not double check everything, we are misled by big names. Many of us have come to confuse consensus science with empirical science. The truth will win, yet, currently, the evolutionary ideology is hiding the truth as far as they can to continue their false narratives.

I read this in the course of a few weeks, savouring each chapter slowly. I love this kind of straightforward discourse, clearly outlined and thoughtfully written, which questions the current secularist and materialist ideologies that drive certain sections of science today. Highly recommend for people of faith who want to understand how secular education and culture have been hiding/obfuscating discrepancies within the evolutionary account.

The third way does not solve the problem and I do believe it will eventually point to a solution that is outside of mainstream "scientific" thinking. Abductively, one must conclude there was someone outside space and time that caused life to happen.

Excellent refutation of evolutionist scientists' deceptions and outright lies which continue to be force-fed to students in textbooks, such as Haeckel's fraudulent embryo drawings, their complete misunderstanding of the way the vertebrate eye works, and their making up of evolutionary stories that have not a shred of evidence to back them up. He emphasizes that these evolutionists will do anything to spread their religious belief in materialism and naturalism.

Jonathan Wells argues so effectively and presents information so clearly that his books should be essential reading for either side of the argument. He raises many probing questions and points out many logical flaws in Darwinian theory. If "Science" is to be taken seriously by anyone who values truth, these questions must be addressed.

This book looks at many of the old, outdated and yet often still in use iconic ideas in support of evolution. It's not about making a case for a new theory as much as it just shows how many of the ideas have been discredited for years, yet still live in our language and thinking.

A wonderful book that questions the scientific dogma of materialism. Evolutionary theory is challenged. Micro evolution is acknowledged but macro evolution is shrouded in doubt. Many Icons of Evolution are proven false or fraudulent . An interesting look at what is wrong in Darwinian Evolution.
