Jonathan Carroll

The book introduced several hallmarks of Carroll’s writing, including talking animals and worlds that straddle the thin line between reality and the surreal, a technique that has seen him compared to South American magical realists.
Outside the Dog Museum (1991) was named the best novel of the year by the British Fantasy Society, and has proven to be one of Carroll’s most popular works. A most wonderful thought provoking insightful collection of personal observational thoughts by Jonathan Carroll as he strolls around Venice- the people, views, shops, structures, transport, sights and smells etc.
I took my time with this chunky book as it need to be savoured rather than gobbled down and unappreciated so I read it over time along side contrasting fictional books.
Carroll is one of my favourite authors of magical realism so I jumped at the chance to really get inside and marvel at his amazingly wacky mind and it certainly did not disappoint, a real must for any fan!.
My thanks go to the author, publishers and Netgalley in providing this arc in return for a honest review.

naprawdę świetna książka w której autor dzieli się z nami swoimi postrzeżeniami na temat sensu naszego istnienia
odwołuje się do wielu ciekawych sytuacji i swoje myśli wyraża poprzez nietypowe metafory
bardzo polubiłam i związałam się z tym utworem
posiada dużo refleksji z którymi się utożsamiam i które w jakiś sposób mnie najbardziej uwiodły
przez to że książka jest napisana w postaci zboru opowiadań szybką i płynnie się ją czyta
trudno mi było się zebrać i ją skończyć, bo wiedziałam, że mnóstwo treści mi umknie dlatego od razu planuje przyszłościowy reread :) polecam

I've had this book sitting on our dining table for an embarrassingly long time. Not because it was hard to read or incredibly dense, but because reading this book feels like eating a very, very large box of chocolate truffles. Each one is small, but very rich. They're not nutritious, but they're *nourishing*. You have one at a time, maybe two, and savor them. They are each delicious, but varied, and you never regret eating them. You don't sit and eat the whole box in one sitting.
This book is like that. Each "essay" (Entry? Passage?) lasts 1-2 pages, with large text. They're extremely short, but each one makes you feel so good. I'd sit at the table with my meal or a snack, and read 10-20 pages at a time. And that was enough. Any more, and I think it just wouldn't feel as special.

Przyznam, że niejednokrotnie zaszkliły mi się oczy albo miałam takie myśli jak "Ej faktycznie! Też tak mam!". Wszystko to, łącznie z wszechobecną dziwacznością, sprawiło, że poczułam ogromną więź między mną, a stronami tej książki. Z niecierpliwością oczekuje momentu, aż zabiorę się za resztę jego dzieł.
Droga mamo, teraz już wiem, dlaczego nazywasz go swym ulubionym autorem.

I do not like short stories that well. But this is not a collection of short stories ... it is a collection of short observations and thoughts of life. In these brief writings , he is writing about the mundane and the everyday while also connecting them to deeper meaning.
I seem to spend a lot of time sitting in my car ... waiting ... I am going to keep it in the car to read while waiting
I have also used several of his observations in my psychology and interpersonal communications class

Obviously I'd prefer a new novel from Mr. Carroll, but while waiting for the next, this chunky little book of internet musings and other shorts is well worth reading. It's also a perfect pick-up/put-down book, because the longest entry is only about 5 pages, most being 1 or 2 pages. Perfect for commuting, lunchtime browsing, etc. As always, the language is lovely, the ideas are thought-provoking and interesting, and the warmth of his regard comes through with every piece.

„Kolacja dla wrony” była lekturą września 2023 w Dyskusyjnym Klubie Książki przy Bibliotece Miejskiej w Rawie Mazowieckiej. Rozmowa o tej książce wyjątkowo często i uparcie meandrowała, uciekała w najbardziej odległe skojarzenia oraz refleksje; i nic dziwnego, gdyż „Kolacja dla wrony” to wybór baardzo krótkich, rożnorodnych stylistycznie i tematycznie form literackich przypominających najbardziej zbiór notatek z codziennych refleksji i skojarzeń zapisywanych na bieżąco i wrzucanych do pudełka, a potem wydanych w formie książki. Właśnie incydentalnych, pojawiających się znikąd refleksji i skojarzeń, a nie przemyśleń, opowiadań czy innych „poważnych” rozważań czy konstatacji. Jedni z nas mają takie myśli częściej, inni rzadziej. Sądząc jednak z braku tożsamych znaczeniowo synonimów dla refleksji i skojarzenia w rozumieniu błyskawicznej, ulotnej i często błachej obserwacji, połączenia faktów i wypracowania nowej interpretacji, zastanawiającej, nierzadko oryginalnej, nowatorskiej, ale nie burzącej świata i niczego niezmieniającej, wielu z nas, przynajmniej przez znaczną część życia, takich efektów pracy mózgu u siebie nie obserwuje.
Okazało się, że wszyscy w Klubie akurat też takie skojarzenia miewają i dla takich czytelników książka Jonathana Carrola będzie lekką i przyjemną, ale na pewno niewnoszącą nieczego odkrywczego lekturą. Mocniejszy powiew oryginalności odczują na pewno czytelnicy, których nie trapią takie samoistne myśli. Kto by jednak tego zbiorku nie czytał, musi docenić niesamowite pióro autora i swobodne operowanie różnymi konwencjami literackimi. Inna sprawa, że ze względu na to, iż każdy tekst jest „z innej parafii” i są one przemieszane bez widocznego ładu czy klucza, nie da się całości czytać bez przerw, bez odsapnięcia, nabrania dystansu i zresetowania się. No i trzeba uczciwie wspomnieć, że tytułowa „Kolacja dla wron” jest jednym z najsłabszych elementów w zbiorku, podobnie jak teksty wprowadzające do innych, „pełnowymiarowych” dzieła autora, które na szczęście zgrupowane są pod koniec, więc łatwo je przebrnąć z rozpędu.
Oceny w klubie wypadły następująco: nie było nikogo, komu by się książkia nie podobała, dla dwóch osób była OK, a pozostałe (3) stwierdziły, że się im podobała. Nikomu nie podobała się bardzo, nie mówiąc o tym, by ktoś uznał ją za niesamowitą. W tym jednak wypadku oceny są mniej wążkie od kluczowej konstatacji, że nie po miesiącu, ale może już tygodniu czy dwóch, absolutna większość czytelników niczego, lub prawie niczego, już z tej lektury nie będzie pamiętać.

„The Crows Dinner“ is a collection of short texts by Jonathan Carroll that originally appeared on his website. In these Carroll is observing the mundane and the everyday while all too often trying to impose deeper meaning on these things or use them as a starting point for his mildly interesting musings.
The main problem is that Jonathan Carroll observations are mostly shallow, his thoughts rather predictable and most of what he does is stating the obvious while scratching the surface. On closer inspection most of the book is pointless ramblings and it is obvious that the author is trying way too hard without ever reaching a point where his content becomes meaningful or worthwhile. I couldn't bring myself to finish this, even though I tried many times, but I simply was unable to stand another page of generic irrelevance blown out of proportion just for the sake of the very few genuine thoughts Carroll indeed does drop here and there.

I’ve been waiting for this book for 20 years. This is the kind of book that made me fall in love with Jonathan Carroll’s writing so many years ago. I didn’t realize he could write stuff like this anymore. Since From the Teeth of Angels, I’ve been ever-more bored with his crazy stories that take place among dead characters rather than the beautiful fractured living.
But this book is full of two-page vignettes that are pure slice-of-life magic, as likely to make you smile wistfully as to tear up. Or maybe both plus something else.
What I realized as I moved into the second hundred pages is that there is a LOT here. Not the fact that it’s 565 pages. The fact that it’s so rich. It’s clear that these pieces were written occasionally, and they should be enjoyed that way too. Trying to tackle 40-50 pages at a sitting is like trying to drink a bottle of syrup. It’s better to read one or two pieces each day, then go out to experience the world as a more beautiful magical place than you are accustomed to.

Great stuff, as usual from Mr. Carroll. I was thinking it had been a very long time since I’d seen anything new from him so I did a search for his most recent works, and found this and one other novel I’d never seen.
This collection is full of very short essays and thoughts, the vast majority not even a full page long. I highlighted more from this collection, though, than from the last dozen novels I’ve read - that’s how poetic his prose can be, how a seemingly simple turn of phrase can resonate and vibrate like a recently rung bell inside your mind. There are no such things as spoilers in these writings, so do check out those highlights for a good sampling of what the book is like overall.
I may need to read something else before tackling the recent novel; I don’t want to dull any of its waiting revelations by risking having too much of a good thing, too quickly.

At worst trite, at best spell binding; a generous collection of brief observations and insights on life by Jonathan Carroll. I devoured the book in less than a day. It made me want to read his novels again.

I hate books like this. When you’re reading them it feels like a famous author has decided that anything he writes is worth publishing. This is a collection of essays and impressions that should have never left Carroll’s notebook. The only parts worth reading are the ones about writing.

A very hard book to easily label. Short essays about everyday life and the beauty that is all around us. I agree with the reviewer who compared it to a box of chocolate truffles. Or Turkish delight in my case. Don’t read this book over a short period, rather savor it for as long as possible

Albo mi sie wydaje, albo bylo bardzo duzo powtorzen z "Oka dnia". Gdybym czytala, nie znajac "Oka dnia", ocenilabym wyzej, a tak, to niestety troche mnie ksiazka rozczarowala.

No mam słabość do Carrolla. Jest to mistyczne pisanie na krawędzi cudu i grozy. Technicznie różnie, ale w małych formach jest lepiej niż w powieściach. Przyjemnie mi się w tym było.
