3.5 Stars Down And Dirty: A Single Dad Bad Boy Romance By Annette Fields
Solomon (Sol) and Natalie.......
This review was difficult to write without giving you a wrong impression. First you need to know despite my negative comments, I did like this book. This was not my first book by Annette Fields and it won't be my last. I believe the end goal is to be entertained by a book, and I was with this one. Also, I hope you'll take my comments as information and not so much critique. Because we all have different tastes, what I think is ridiculous, you may not. That said, I'll be brief so I won't spoil anything for you.
Beyond her control, Natalie has been in a horrific situation for six months before she was able to get away. What she went though was downright tragic and life changing. The fact that she was not mentally affected by those circumstances and bounced back to reality so easily was unrealistic.
Sol takes Natalie in to help her. He opens his home to her and offers her a safe haven as well as kindness and protection. The fact he brings a stranger into his home and around his six year old daughter was also not something I'd agree with.
Sol is a hard criminal (says that in the blurb). A criminal is the very last person you'd expect someone in Natalie's position to feel safe with. But they had strong chemistry and an instant attraction so being together was unavoidable. I did feel the love they had for each other and I enjoyed watching their relationship develop. There is some angst, suspense and danger in the book. At one point I was worried where the story was going and my concern went to the characters. Though in the end it worked out that everyone got what they deserved. And I do mean everyone. I thought the epilogue was sweet and I was more than happy with the ending.
That said, this was a short, steamy story with some over the top situations. If you don't mind the 'unrealistic' in a story, you'll enjoy this book. I did.
This is my honest and unbiased review and I thank you for taking the time to read it.
Jesus. Was this written by a completely different author than the previous two in the series? Yikes. This was terrible.
I was totally excited for Sol's story. His scenes in the previous book really made me want to know more about him. I almost wish I hadn't read this... Alright, I do wish I hadn't read this - had I skipped it I would have been blissfully unaware of how ridiculous his character would turn out to be.
If you don't like spoilers stop reading. This is like a cliff-notes version of the story. WHY would I do something like that? Because I want to save you the few hours I wasted reading this.
Here's the basics:
1.) Cheating? No. 2.) Cliffhanger? No. 3.) HEA (Happily Ever After)? Yes. 4.) Violence? Yes, fairly graphic. Physical (like stabbing, shooting, beating etc) and sexual (rape). 5.) Writing/Grammar? Grammatically it was decent yeah but the actual story was nonsense, keep reading for detailed summary. 6.) Sexual content? There's like four sex scenes I think, vanilla, nothing kinky. 7.) Would I recommend this book to my friends? NO! No no no. 8.) POV? Dual
Here's the details:
Last warning... legit SPOILERS startinggggggg NOW!
Sol is a single father. His daughter’s mother having abandoned their baby when he was put in jail and kicked out of college (for selling drugs). Sol became the head boss of his mob or gang or whatever to support his daughter. While unloading a shipment he finds Natalie hiding in the delivery truck/van whatever.
Natalie was a college student who bought uppers to stay awake/study. Her dealer abducted her and sold her to what's-his-name, a super evil sex trafficker mob boss guy. She manages to escape after... I dunno how long, it doesn't honestly matter. She jumps in the previously mentioned vehicle and bam, freedom.
Despite the fact that super evil guy could be looking for Natalie and potentially put him and his daughter in danger (Sol's a bad guy yes, but not as powerful as super evil guy) he takes Natalie home with him. Yeah - he's father of the year. Trust me it gets worse.
After being raped for months and months, kept in filthy living conditions, starved and still literally bleeding from injuries she suffered during her escape, Natalie's totally turned on by Sol and tries to get in his pants. I'm just assuming at this point that Natalie is deranged, no sane human would feel frisky in those circumstances. Sol turns her down, not wanting to take advantage of her, she gets butt-hurt and sulks.
Natalie was apparently raised primarily by her pops (her mother died when she was young) and she loves and misses him terribly. She calls him as soon as she gets the chance and lets him know she's alive and well. HAHA gotcha - no she actually totally just blows that idea off and lets him think she's dead for like, most of the book.
Natalie spends a few days playing mommy to Sol’s 6 year old (who asks if she'll be her mommy within like, a day) and worming her way into Sol's heart. I know. I was rolling my eyes too. It gets better, well not BETTER but you know like better in a terrible way - anyway, moving on.
Fast forward a few days and Sol is DTF, he tells Natalie he learned his lesson from the first kid and grabs a condom. The morning after their "magical" night together he suddenly realizes 1.) Natalie being in his house puts his kid in danger -if super evil bad guy finds out she's in his house 2.) He really doesn't know Natalie -and if she'll stick around- and his daughter is getting super attached 3.) He's apparently afraid of commitment, tells her to pack her ish, drives her two towns over to a women's shelter and dumps her like a stray cat.
Of course once his kid (Ari) finds out he dumped "mommy" at the pound she freaks out, stomps and demands he return her (she's a wee spoiled). That and the thought of missing out on sex on the reg makes him regret his decision and wish he could bring her back. He doesn't have long to wait.
Natalie makes it like three days in the shelter, the women there are super mean to her. It’s like the movie Mean Girls with shitty clothes and less dental hygiene. A super scary chick, Janelle or Jasmine or something, threatens to rape her so Natalie bounces. One guess where she goes. Yep - back to Sol. If some dude dumped me the morning after we hooked up the last place I'd go is back to his place... unless it was to like, to key his car or something but nah, Natalie's not interested in her pride. Plus, he's hot. Duh.
When she shows up on his doorstep Sol's super happy to have her back and all the sex happens. Only this time he apparently forgets that lesson he leaned and doesn't go for a condom. I'd like to point out here that Natalie was a sex slave in a pretty gross place for who knows how long... were the men paying to rape kidnapped women made to use condoms? As the reader we have no idea which means Sol doesn't and again: being father of the year, the thought of contracting something and getting super sick or dying doesn't faze him. Ugh, gross. Speaking of gross. Sol gets even classier with this little gem:
"I still felt worn out and deeply relaxed from our hot makeup sex and that incredible blowjob she gave me. I mean, holy f***. If there was any upside to her awful time spent in captivity, it was that she got enough practice and technique down to make any man finish prematurely."
I had to re-read that too. Me: Wait... did he just... yep. Ew. All those articles about how to give a better blowjob are a waste. Get kidnapped and get real world experience ladies, apparently that's hot.
Reading the moment when the hero and heroine finally say they love each other is right up there with the first kiss. It's beautiful, romantic, poetry. I love that moment in stories. This book’s "I love you" moment fits perfectly with the story. They're drunk, stumbling home, Sol says something but Natalie's wasted and thinks he told her he loves her so she gets all big eyed and breathy and tells him she loves him too. Drunkenly he tries to remember if he said that –think think think- he didn't. Whatever sure, he tells her he does (again for her, the first time for him). Look out, Jane Austin - this literary masterpiece just kicked things up a notch!
Watching the news, Natalie see's that the police identified a body and it’s of one of her fellow captives. She freaks out. She tells Sol that if he loves her, he'll risk his life taking on super evil bad guy to avenge her, the dead chick and save the others still being held. He agrees. *sigh*
Before Sol heads out, he gets super swoony. You're dying to know how aren't you?
"If I don't come back, a part of me will live on in Ari. But." He paused and lowered a hand to my waist, then slowly trailed his fingertips across my lower belly where he stopped. "I want to live on in a life that I create with you."
HAHAHAHA I know right? Leaving her to take care of his 6 year old if he dies isn't enough, he wants to make her the a potential single mother of two. Of course she's like no way! I'm totally smarter than that! - I lied, she's not smarter than that. She's totally down with this and agrees to getting knocked up. This book was so romantic I just can't you guys.
Sol fights super evil guy, he's victorious (because he's the hero and therefore magic) and races home into Natalie's mentally challenged arms. During the super cheesy confrontation with super evil guy (it was SO cheesy) he has an epiphany and decides he's leaving the life of crime behind him and going straight.
Natalie (finally) lets her dad know she's alive. Sol reconnects with his estranged parents, Natalie DID end up getting pregnant and we end with a proposal and a perfectly neat little HEA. The End.
Ok, so, think back to the beginning of my review… that turned into a summary of the entire book - yeah sorry that was a while ago, you probably had to stop and take a bathroom break half way through this rant, grab a snack etc. Remember I posed the question that this book had to have been written by someone else? If you read the first two books and then you read this “review” you totally get why I say that. There's just no way this is the same writer. There was as actual effort and a decent/not cheesy story line in the first two, what the heck was this nonsense?
Natalie has been held captive after being kidnapped. Forced into prostitution. Finally finding her one chance she escapes!! She hides out in a van until running into the owner. Solomon is a single father and crime boss. He happens to find and Natalie in his van and gets her to open up as to why she is hiding. Finding out his has been betrayed Solomon seeks revenge. Natalie and Sol's love story has many ups and downs with twists and turns thrown in. Super hot book!! Full of love and suspense!!
Although this is the 3rd in the series, it can be read as a standalone. Can two broken souls heal and find happiness with each other? This read has drama, turmoil and heated passion. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
I received and Advanced Reader Copy of this book. The third in the Small Town Bad Boys series. A stand-alone bad boy romance. Having read the previous two books in the series I have a hard time rating this book. The writing was again very good but somehow I just couldn't relate to the main characters. The storyline unfolds around a very serious topic. Natalie was abducted and kept as a sexual slave in the hands of a gruesome criminal. After a lot of suffering she escapes and finds herself in the hands of another criminal, Solomon. He is revolted by the human trafficking business of his rival but still a criminal. What bothered me the most that despite being repulsive of this kind of dirty business Solomon was really reluctant up until the very end to save those innocent girls suffering and still in captivity. I liked that Natalie was so loving but would have liked a bit more of a backbone for her character. I would have liked a bit more detail about her relationship with her father. I liked that Sol was so devoted to his daughter but I didn't like how he treated Natalie, and at one point his inner thoughts seemed utterly disrespectful and insensitive of what she has been through. I liked that he accepted Natalie's guidance and made amends with his parents. I can't really put my finger on it why but I just couldn't feel the chemistry, connection and love between Natalie and Sol as much as with the couples in the previous books. Although it wasn't my favorite in the series it still was an ejoyable entertaining read.
Solomon does not expect his latest shipment to contain extra cargo, especially when that cargo is a disheveled scared mad as hell women holding a knife. Natalie on the run from her captors had jumped into the back of box truck, not knowing where it was headed, she figured it could not be any worse than where she had been. She only knew she had escaped and needed to get help to the others- whoever opened the back of the truck she would deal with it. Solomon does not keep witnesses she had been in that back of his truck, with his illegal goods, but something told him she was worth more to him alive than dead- These two are about to embark on something neither of them had planned. Criminal minds, darkness, sweet moments, hotness, revenge, all leading up to romance and figuring out how to love. This raw upfront fast paced read this all to you in a way that kept me glued to the pages! Certainly, an interesting read from Annette Feilds! I am looking forward to what she has in store for us next! I voluntarily read an advanced readers copy of this book
He is a crime boss, she is a abused woman he saves from slavery when she hides in his truck after a delivery. The premise while dark really intrigued me enough to ask for an ARC to read and review. This is a well written book which makes me being on the fence so hard. Natalie was kidnapped, abused and kept as a sex slave for 6 months with all the abuse you would expect. I felt she got over it way, way too fast. Her reaction immediately after being saved by Solomon was true to her experiences but being able to start a relationship in just a few days is just too much for me. Perhaps if the book had been longer and there was more time before the relationship started it would have been more realistic. That said, belief suspended I enjoyed the writing, the interaction between the H/h and his daughter. I do need to go back and read the first two books in this series...lol. I can recommend this book to mature readers due to content.
I received a complimentary copy of this book for voluntary review consideration.
I love Annette Fields books. She has a way of drawing you into her world. A woman (Natalie) escapes hell and finds her way to a drug lord (Solomon) who has no idea what is going on. When Soloman finds out that the man he has been dealing with in the drug trade is also dealing in sex trafficking all hell will break loose. This is such a wonderful love story that takes you to hell and brings you back into the light. Natalie is such a strong woman after what has happened to her and to find an equally strong man to help her rise to the potential that she will have to come to get over everything that has happened to her. And Soloman being the man that he is doesn't make Natalie feel less than a woman he is there to support her and give her back her life and a family. This is a love story that is just wonderful. This is a must read story that you won't want to put down.
This is a standalone in the Small Town Bad Boy series. Can two people with a dark existence and broken souls find love and peace together. This is the story of crime boss Solomon who is tough as nails but has a heart of gold for his six year old daughter. Everything he does is to help secure a better life for her. the chemistry is instant when Solomon finds Natalie hiding in the back of the truck. She had been sold into a world of sex traffic and escape after stabbing a man. Lots of turmoil and passion as they fight their feelings for each other. An emotional roller coaster. Not wanting to be a spoiler so you'll need to read the book to see if they find happiness together and make a family with his daughter. I voluntarily reviewed an arc copy of this book.
Sol loves only one female and that is adorable 6 year old daughter. He will do anything to make her life as perfect as possible, with the one exception of her not having a Mum. Sol's line of work isn't exactly legal and he finds Natalie in the back of his truck on the run form other criminals. He promises, after she has stopped fighting him, to protect her and keep her safe. This is the third book in a series and they are all terrific. Annette Fields has proven with this book that she is a really good writer. As a good writer she weaves the storyline and draws you into it, such that you almost "feel" the emotions of the characters. They are 3-dimensional and you can experience their love/lust story developing. This is one steamy, hot story that is also fun to read!
I usually like the books that Layla Valentine has written but this book wasn't one of her best for me. Now that being said, it may be just the book you are looking for. She is a good writer and her stories are normally well written with storylines that are appealing. I personally had a hard time getting in to the story at first so it wasn't as fast of a read that one of her other books may have been. It's entertaining though. There are also a few other books attached for your enjoyment. I voluntarily read an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book.
I'd recommend it, give it a read and see what you all think. I believe the released book has an extra few books attached and that's always a good thing.
This was a great read, the plot was a little dark in places but it only added to the overall feel of the story, the characters were a mixture of hot, sweet, loving, broken, scary and down right disgusting. This book has almost everything you could want in a romance story with a deep and thoughtful plot, it was an easy to read book that kept me interested and I honestly couldn't put it down. Its a decent length book about 5-6 hours total reading time, I would suggest this book to anyone who enjoys a good romance and doesn't mind a slight dark side to the plot.
I received a copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review
Solomon is a criminal boss with a heart of gold. He is also a single father to a six year old girl. One day, when his driver brought in a truckload of product, Sol discovered a stowaway, a dirty, beaten, half starved woman. Natalie's appearance into his life would change him forever. Learning Natalie's story is heartbreaking as well as fascinating. Seeing how Solomon & Natalie affect and change each other's lives and how Natalie recovers from her ordeal is very interesting and entertaining. Highly recommend this book. It is well written with believable, realistic characters and a beautiful resolution. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book. Five stars.
Glad to finally get Solomon's story. Natalie was held captive and had escaped right into Solomon's territory. Having been betrayed Solomon will have to seek revenge. Not wanting to get attached to Natalie for his sake and his daughter but realizes his mistake and wants Natalie back. Both want each other and being together just feels right. Can they both have the family they both longed for? Loved Solomon & Natalie together especially how they were with Ari. Great story & great characters that will having you reading non stop
I voluntarily reviewed this Advanced Reader Copy of this book
This is the story of Solomon who we met before and were very intrigued by him, so I was hoping he would get his own story and this one does not disappoint. We meet Natalie who is trying to heal and recover from a very traumatic and heartbreaking past. Of course there's lots of action, drama and great chemistry with her and Solomon. Book 3 in the series but can absolutely be read alone. Plus we get a HEA. I volunteered to read ARC for my honest opinion and Annette Fields always writes a great story so I was happy for the opportunity
Natalie has been kidnapped into prostitution and is beeing held captive. one day she managed to escape. She hides in a van and the owner of the van is the single dad Soloman. He is a crime boss but one with a heart. Natalie and Solomon soon get feelings for each other and Solomon promises to keep her safe. This book was really great. Terrible stuff that Natalie has been trough. It was hot and romantic and super exciting. definitely worth to read
4* Natalie is running for her life after stabbing a man trying to rape Leah another captive in the neck. Solomon gets a shock when he finds Natalie inside a truck delivering packages to him. Where has she come from & why does his body react to her? He's powerful but why is her body reacting to him after all she's been through? I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book Another great story
I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book
This is the 3rd book in the series but can be read as a standalone.
Natalie is running for her life, she has escaped a prostitution ring straight into the arms of criminal Solomon. Solomon deals in drugs, but never women. He keeps Natalie safe, his daughter wants a mother and Solomon is falling hard for Natalie. With drama, romance and a great story line this was a fantastic book.
**I am voluntarily reviewing an Advanced Readers Copy of this book** Third Book in the Small Town BB Series by Annette Fields and Solomon and Natalie's story is probably my favorite so far. These characters booth have their own baggage, her's is so much more devastating than his, however both are damaged. How they develop their relationship and mend each other is definitely worth the read. A page turner from start to finish. Great job Anette. Free with your KU subscription.
As a crime boss Solomon has to do what ever it takes to run his business! But he is an honorable man so, when an abused sex slave stowaway shows up in a load of product he has to help her! He calls on his friend Liam a good cop who knows when to turn a blind eye! Ms. Fields has done it again! This story is the third in the series and can be read as a standalone! But it is more fun to read them in order!
Down and Dirty is the story of Solomon and Natalie. Sol is committed to one girl and one girl only and that is his 6 yr old daughter. Natalie has escaped from a human sex slaver. She turns up in Sol's life, stowed away in a delivery he was expecting. A really good storyline, with great characters and an easily enjoyable read. I couldn't put it down.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy, this the 3 Book in the Small Town Bad Boys, and they just keep getting better with each book. This is Natalie and Sol Story. This is one book i'll reccomend to all my friends. i love this author and her way with words. she is one author that no matter how many books i have to read i'll drop them all for hers first. The romance the drama and the characters they all mesh well together. once you start reading this book you can't put it down. This is a standalone with a HEA.
If you want a good book to read, then this is it. Not only does it have that single, bad boy, dad romance but it has so much more too. This book is sweet, touching and definitely worth reading. You will love not only enjoy the storyline and how different it is, but you will fall in love with the characters and hope they get their happily ever after.
Solomon was a bad boy but he knew he needed to do right by Natalie. Loved their riveting story! I was rooting for them all the way, and it was an amazing adventure to get to the end. Loved the steam and the way Solomon and Natalie heated up the pages! I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
I received an ARC of this book. I voluntarily chose to review it. This isn't my usual type of book but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. This is well written. This is the first book by Annette Fields I have read it won't be the last. I encourage you to go get this one, it's worth your time and effort. This one is something different, but its good!!!
Down & Dirty, Solomon is a single dad to an adorable 6 year old daughter and a crime boss, Natalie escapes from captivity from hell and is ready to end her own life rather than get taken again. The story was full of twist & turns, insta attraction, a little action, a really slimy bad guy, hot steamy sexy time. Enjoy
I really enjoyed Solomon and Natalie's story. Natalie has had it rough and Solomon is there to protect her. It is a little dark with painful elements - but it is well written. It is as great read. Good characters and plot. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
