In the spirit of Snoopy and Charlie Brown, or Calvin and Hobbes, Dog eat Doug is the cartooning creation of Brian Anderson that follows the daily exploits of Sophie, a cheese-loving chocolate Lab with a nose for the nuances of sarcasm and irony, and baby Doug, a healthy, happy newborn with no concept of jealousy and a limitless curiosity.
Together, this dynamic duo adjusts to sharing the spotlight, the toys, and the affections of Mom and Dad, while exploring nature and its majesty, the couch and its cushions, and the cookie jar and its contents.
Brian Anderson is the creator of the upcoming graphic novels and animated series “Sophie”, based on his syndicated comic, “Dog eat Doug”.
He is also the author of The Conjurers trilogy (Rise of the Shadow, Hunt for the Lost, and Fight of the Fallen) as well as the picture books Nighty Night, Sleepy Sleeps; The Prince’s New Pet; and Monster Chefs. He lives in North Carolina with his family, which includes a herd of rescued dogs and cats.
Dog eat Doug Volume 10 by Brian Anderson continues the funny family life of Doug and his puppy Spine, and the two brainy cats! Lots of fun for anyone who has had kids and pets together growing up. Very clever and enjoyable!
I have read of few of these books now and each one is funnier than the last. I truly enjoy all the pop culture references mixed in. I have always been a fan of comic strips and used to look forward to the funny pages every day and especially Sundays. Growing up in Chicago we had two great papers with so many strips worth reading. These are somewhat reminiscent of Calvin and Hobbes and yet so different. I can enjoy them both over and over again. I would highly recommend these books for anyone young or old.
Volume 10! Whew… I’ve now read all volumes from 1-10. I’ve got to say that overall the series is pretty decent. If I still got a newspaper and it was a comic in the paper I would read it everyday. Is this truly on the level of Calvin & Hobbes? No, it has its moments but it rarely reaches that level of genuine awesomeness, although it has potential, after 10 volumes I don’t think it is ever going to reach that potential. Volume 10 is similar to Volume 9, more in the short story lines and less of the longer story lines. No Alabama Lab in this one which is disappointing to me.
The art as always is fantastic. The writing is again mediocre but again better now they have the interactions with the cats as well. I just wish the author would do more story lines like Alabama Lab and other longer story lines poking fun at modern pop culture. Instead most of the jabs are just short one comic panel one liners.
Somedays you need to chuckle. One of the best ways to do that is read the funny papers, right? Or you could read Dog eat Doug and have pages and pages of funny dog/baby vs cats/parents laughs. Reminiscent of Calvin and Hobbes adventures and thoughts, Sophie the dog and Doug the baby stick closer to home but have their own brand of fun. It is a relaxing book to read, and brings an element of truth to light for those of us who have had dogs and babies, and especially at the same time! Loads of fun and no bad language besides!
Written with the mischievous spirit of Calvin and Hobbes or Get Fuzzy, this is a fun collection. The baby and the dog are the leads, but I found the cats to be diabolically entertaining as well. While not laugh out loud funny, it was amusing and I'll watch for more.
Dog eat Doug is the best strip out there! Baby Doug and puppy Sophie are constantly getting into mischief and the artwork shows it all in hilarious detail! Funny, funny, funny! If you haven't met these two yet, pick any of their books and settle in to be entertained.
As always, Dog eat Doug made me laugh! And so many situations ring true. I didn't know the strips were out in book form. I'll read more of them. Recommended!
Trying to be quiet and not just cackle with laughter waking the whole is sleeping will give you a serious red face and the snorts! Loved it, looking for more now!
