The Mysteries of Max #3

Purrfect Revenge

Rate this book
Blorange tabby Max and ragamuffin Dooley are on the case again. This time a world-famous reality star has been found murdered in her own bed, and it looks like the crime just might be terror-related. The Kenspeckles, stars of the well-known reality show Keeping Up with the Kenspeckles, are in town to film a new season of their show, so the case soon turns into a complete media circus, with the Kenspeckles insisting the entire investigation is filmed for their show.

Odelia Poole, Hampton Cove’s premier reporter, teams up with Detective Chase Kingsley to catch the killer, but with cameras filming their every move, and every Kenspeckle a suspect, they’re not making a lot of progress. Good thing Odelia’s cats Max and Dooley can sneak around undetected, tracking leads and hunting clues. But first they have to pacify Shana’s French Bulldog Kane, who just might be in possession of the clue that breaks the case. And they have to outsmart Chase’s black tabby Brutus, who has his own reasons to find the killer.

Will Max and Dooley solve the case? Or will Brutus beat them to it? And will Dooley finally get to first tail with Harriet? Find out in Purrfect Revenge, the third installment in the funny cat mystery series The Mysteries of Max.

A very silly book.

The concept of cats talking to each other is one thing, but the whole family conversing with them like humans is just silly. Same with the insipid cat romance. I couldn't even finish it to see if the humans got to liking each other. Read the last chapter to see who don't it and that was awful also.

Great story.

This story will make you laugh out loud and if you're down, will lift you up. Good who done it story. Lovable cats and one French Bulldog named Kane help their humans to solve the mystery.

I didn't care for the storyline

A new take on the Kardashians. Not a favorite. When we finally got passed all of the crap, the murder was solved. That is all.

SUCH A GREAT SERIES, I'M HUNTING FOR MORE COZIES FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF ANIMALS.

SERIES PREMISE: In this series we follow Max, a Blorange Tabby cat whom, along-side his bestie Dooley (a Tabby), his friend Harriett (a Persian) and her boyfriend Brutis (a black cat) help Max's human Odellia to solve cases in Hampton Cove, New York.
In this book: "The Kenspeckles" sounds very much like The Kardashian's, a reality tv series following sisters. However, one of the sisters has been murdered. One of Max's other cat friends saw the whole thing go down. Odellia is finally trusted enough by new cop Chase to come with her to interview the suspects at the Kenspeckle mansion and even Brutis wants in. But Max knows only he and Dooley can solve this one.

THOUGHTS: I love this series so far as a whole and am saddened the audiobooks stop after the next one as I would listen to all 98 if they were available. In saying that, if I love book 4 as much as the rest I might just force myself to read them physically. That's how much I love them.
Max as a cat-sleuth is perfect! I also love the divesity of cat-characteristics between Max, Dooley, Harriet and Brutis.
Really enjoyed a massive arc in this one between Max and Brutis in particular.
The reveal didn't thrill me, but it wasn't enough for me to warrant dropping anything from my rating.

A Purrfect 5 Stars!
xoxo.

OK

I started reading this book because my wife said it was good. I found the first eight or ninety pages very boring. All of a sudden, it got interesting and was enjoyable through the end of the book. Good characters including the cats. The book was well written.

Definitely fun!

I couldn't stop laughing at the majestic parody of a well (yucky) show this case is centred on. Max and the gang are a delight as usual and the bits with the humans are entertaining. On to the next!!

Relaxing read before surgery!

I wanted something short and fun to read and this hit the spot! Love the cats being part of the detective team! Cannot wait to read the next book in the series.

I don't often write a review, but I really loved this series. The books are short, but definitely have a bit of a surprise at the end. And the cats are great, as a "crazy cat lady" I recognize the way the cats interact, and love their sleuthing. Last but not least, I appreciate the cost of the books, I read a lot, often a book a day, and I wont even start a series or author if the digital books are priced over $5.00. If I can't pass a book on or resell it at a garage sale I wont pay more than this. So thanks, Nic Saint for a bunch of great books at a good price point. I will be exploring the other series.

Too Violent

I like my cozy mysteries unviollent and ungory. Gore and violence were present far beyond the norm. I enjoy the cats and all the recurring characters, but I easily could have skipped this one. Best part took place at the top of a tree.

This series is growing on me. I just have to suspend belief with reality and regard it as a light and entertaining read and not take it too seriously. The cats can understand human speak and love to help Odelia investigate murders. They are her eyes and ears out "on the street" and most people tend to ignore them. Our heroine, Odelia Poole, is an excellent reporter for the Hampton Cove Gazette, because the cats she knows roam around town picking up gossip, interviewing other cats, looking for clues, investigating for her, tracking down leads, and supplying her with a steady stream of news for her to write up. Only the women of the Poole family have the special gift of communicating with cats. Other people only hear cat mewings. A lot of the dialogue is written from a cat's point of view with plenty of banter and snarky commentaries.

Our favorite cats are back. Max is a blorange (his word) Tabby and belongs to Odelia. His best friend is Dooley, a big beige ragamuffin that is sweet, kind, and dimwitted who belongs to Odelia's grandmother. Harriet is an empty-headed, shallow white Persian who belongs to Odelia's parents. her paramour is a black cat named Brutus who belongs to Detective Chase Kingsley. Chase is new to town and used to work for the NYPD. He is living with Odelia's Uncle Alec ( who is Sheriff of Hampton Cove) until he can find a place of his own, and Odelia is kind of attracted to him. Clarice is a feral cat who helped solve the case in the last book and is an eyewitness to a murder in this one.

This book is a parody of reality shows. A film crew is in town on location to film a show titled "Keeping Up With the Kenspeckles". They are renting a house on beach front property. Odelia's boss wants her to do a story on them. The Kenspeckles consist of Shana, Shayonne, Shalonda, Shantel, Sandy, Steel, Camille, and Starr. It isn't long before Shana Kenspeckle is found murdered in her bed by her husband. Her head is missing which is later found on the dining room table with an apple in her mouth along with a note pasted to her forehead signed Al Kida. It sounds like terrorists who can't spell their own name. This is the part that doesn't scream "cozy mystery" for me! The eyewitness to the murder is Clarice, the feral cat, who spotted the killer wearing a long black robe and black mask. The Sheriff is out of town and since he has engaged Odelia as an official consultant to the police department and includes her in their business, he has asked Chase to partner up with her and investigate until he can return. Unlike most cozies, Odelia is considered an asset rather than a hindrance to the police.

The plethora of suspects include:
- Director of the show, Alejandro Salanova, was heard praying for a murder to get the show back to the top of the ratings and get people watching it again. They are on the verge of being cancelled.
- Writer Eamonn Dot wanted to leave the show because he hates it but has an ironclad contract.
- Stanbury Boa is a bodyguard who runs the detail that protects the Kenspeckles.
- All the sisters - Shana upstaged them and tried to steal their boyfriends and was sleeping with Shayonne's husband. She also stole her husband Damien from Sholanda. Turns out Shana was not a nice person!
- Robin Masters, Shana's ex-boyfriend went ballistic when Shana got engaged to Damien LeWood.
- Dion was getting kicked off the show and wanted revenge against Shana. Murder might also benefit him if he got his own show out of it.
Luckily, cameraman Burr Newberry had an alibi, but did he?.
Stylist Laurelle Merritt was publicly humiliated by Shana.

The show insists that the entire investigation be filmed. Well, one of these suspects is arrested when Max and Dooley find a black robe and meat cleaver in his/her closet. Really??? Clarice also supplied a clue that nobody picks up at first and involves Shana's French bulldog named Kane. Brutus has a theory that Shana was killed by a huge, ferocious dog who bit her head off. His theory gets shot down immediately. The cat choir is also back which leads to chaos in the neighborhood. Watch for a couple of funny scenes that are laugh-out-loud funny. One involves the cats chasing Kane, the French bulldog, around while the body guards are chasing reporters around the pool. The other is Max and Brutus challenging each other to climb higher and higher in a tree. The upside is that they commiserate together all night, wait to be rescued, and become friends, maybe...

When the famous reality show family, the Kenspeckles, come to town to film their show, it becomes a media circus. The situation is made worse when one of the Kenspeckle sisters is murdered in her own bed. Odelia teams up with Detective Chase Kingsley to investigate, taking all four of their cats along. Max and his friend Dooley are determined to crack the case, but Chase's cat Brutus wants to beat them to the punch. With the Kenspeckles wanting the investigation filmed for their show, Odelia and Chase are constrained in their sleuthing. Fortunately the cats can sneak around unnoticed and hopefully uncover some clues. The biggest clues, however, may come from a feral cat and from the victim's French bulldog...if only Max can get the other animals to talk.

A mild improvement over the second book, which was a mild improvement over the first. Brutus is still a jerk, but we learn more about why he is how he is. Chase is still a jerk, and Odelia still can't control her vagina around him. Something about this series that bugs me is how Odelia communicates with her cats. She has the ability to understand them, which is great, but when she speaks to them, she speaks "in cat". However, the cats have no trouble understanding what other characters (who don't share Odelia's gift) are saying. So why then must she meow at them when she's talking to them? It makes no sense. The murder was a tad grisly for a "cozy" mystery, and the dog and pony show that the investigation turned into was appalling. It seemed no one in the family cared that their sister/daughter/friend was dead; they were more excited about how it would ramp up their ratings. Wow.

Average read, average rating.

While I know this book probably shouldn't rate 4 stars I simply can't help myself - I have a soft spot for Max, Dooley, Harriett, and Brutus. The quartet of cat detectives are on the case again in the 3rd installment of The Mysteries of Max series. This time they are out to solve the brutal slaying of a reality show tv star. And while the take off of a certain reality show (think lots of "K" names) was delicious, what makes this book (and this series) work is that the mystery always remains solid. The fact that you are buying into talking cats never overshadows "who done it" - and that is the way it should be. All of the series are extremely fast reads, so give this one a go when you have a couple of hours.

Third in the series, still very cartoony to me, lol, but I'm sure the cat people are enjoying Max and friends' shenanigans.

I do not watch shows like the Kardashian drama queens, I really don't get the appeal. But reading this book, I didn't realize just how scripted they were, if this has any truth to it LOL. This series came up on my Kindle for some reason as a book with all 10 of the series. So far, it has been one of those series I can read them, but I can just as easily put them down; not one of those series that gets me so drawn in I lose track of time, but not so terrible I stop and never look back. I do keep hoping they get better but so far the series is pretty much a solid 3 ⭐ for me.

I loved these cute little cozies with the talking detective cat and this one, #3, was no exception. Max the cat is the narrator and his human, a reporter, speaks cat and together they solve murder mysteries. The murder in this one is a tad gruesome for a cozy but it doesn't stay in focus long and the cats are charming enough for me to overlook that. The author shows a good grasp of felines iin these books as well and if cats could talk, I believe you'd find he has nailed their society and personalities. Many people think cats are solitary but if they are allowed, they have a complex social life and he's captured that here in the background to a great little mystery.

Reality star found headless

Hampton Cove is host to a reality show for the summer. Only problem is, one of the family has been murdered. Odelia and Chase, and Max and the cats are on the case.

Unfortunately, this time they are a little slow finding the killer and the head of the family forces the FBI to take over!

Will Max and Dooley figure it out before the family leaves town? Will Odelia and Chase prove what happened? Will Max and Brutus become friends? And just who is out for revenge?

Lots of fun, clues, and life in a small-ish town. If you haven't yet met thses people, now is a good time to do so.

Fun enjoyable read

This is a well written light and enjoyable read. It’s a who-done-it of course. There is some humor and mild excitement.
I rate this a five because it fulfills my expectations for this genre. It is not an intense adventure or deep exploration of humanity. There is no significant character development.
It is a fun light read perfect for relaxing and getting one’s mind off of stressful times. I do not recall even one editing mistake which is an accomplishment. Many books (especially e-books) have numerous errors these days. I recommend this when you are looking for something light and enjoyable.

Definitely a 5 Star read.

This book has 4 cats that can com o municate with Odelia, who helps the police work on the case of Murder . Chase is a very good-looking cop that Odelia has worked with before. Between them, can they solve the cats before someone else is more. This is a well written story that keeps the attention of the reader. Of course the cats keep a bit of humor going as they talk with Odelia about the case. Good book. I starting the next one in the series today.

An ugly reality!

The Chief has told Detective Chase Kingsley that Odelia is the departments new crime consultant. Chase isn’t happy about it but Odelia is with him at the crime scene investigating the murder of a reality show star. The murder is brutal and the clues point to an inside job but the reality show family is treating this like a new script. Fortunately, Odelia has help from Max, Dooley, Brutus, and Harriet in searching for evidence.

This is an enjoyable cozy series with human and animal detectives working together.

What’s this we see? A softening of enemies into becoming friends? Or… maybe even more in one case? I love the way this story pokes fun at the reality-television family America loves to hate. I thought this was a perfect satirical tribute to them, because I’m certain there are people out there who would very much like to be the villain in this story. The answer to the mystery wasn’t one I was expecting and the clue that gave away their identity was just as unexpected, though fiendishly clever. I can’t wait to see where the series takes us next.

Are Max, Dooley, Henrietta and Brutus finally a crime solving team?

A TV star beheaded in her bed, a TV crew, a mansion full of relatives discover the head of the star on the coffee table. Will Max and Brutus ever become civil to each other? Odelia and Chase work together to solve the gruesome murder with the help of the fearsome four fur babies working together to bring the murderer to justice.

A Fun Read

Max and friends help Chase and Odelia identify the murderer in another hard to put down story.
A rich reality star is beheaded in her sleep. Her family insists that it was a terrorist attack, but Chase and Odelia don't buy that theory.
The cats sneak in and out, looking for clues. But the best help comes from a feral cat, Clarice, who witnessed the crime.
Gotta love the humans who can talk with their cats!
Can't wait for the next book.

I enjoy these quick, light, and easy cozy mysteries about a cat whose owner can converse with him. Odelia and the women in their family are blessed with the ability to communicate with cats. Odelia has Max and his friends help her solve murder mysteries that occur in her town. I enjoy these books. They are the perfect in-betweens. I read them while I wait for my next library book. I am looking forward to #4.

Love these books!

It is such a neat basis for a series - a woman who talks to cats and has them help her solve murders. This third one in the series revolves around celebs filming a reality show, when one of them is murdered. And of course Max and the cats help reporter Odelia figure out “who done it”! Surprise ending!

Max, Odelia's cat and Dooley. Grandma's cat are investigating a murder to help Odelia Poole the reporter. A Reality Show is being filmed in Hampton Cove when the star of the show is murdered. Like all of Max's Mysteries with the cats talking to Odelia who can talk to cats, this is a funny and a break from ordinary mysteries.

Another murder and Max and his buddies are at it again. This time it seems they can't get any information to help with the case. Max and his rival Brutus finally sort of become friends after spending a few hours up a very tall tree. But in the end both Max and Odelia figure out who the murder is. Love these talking cats.

This book actually had me LOL…laughing out loud.

This is a nice relaxing book. The humor is well placed and the characters (animals included} are fun. What a nice little break from reality. Love the author for the change of pace offered with every book. Now, please explain why my dog can’t talk to me.

I enjoyed this book much more than the previous two. It's a very clever use of why the dog didn't bark.
I didn't see it until the end when the cat started realizing why the dog didn't bark, and I'm familiar with the Sherlock Holmes use of it. Plus, Gran wasn't in the book much, and that also made the book better. This is the best book, so far.

I should probably stop grabbing these when they are freebies, but maybe they'll get better? There is a murder mystery in here. The reveal is plausible, but This book is mainly take over by absurd romances and love triangles between the cats. Could have done without 94% of that.
