Read this in the space of a TAFE lunch time - absolutely fantastic. Short, sweet and unsettling.

It never ceases to amaze me how someone can write a 170-page novel which tells a deeper and more intriguing and emotional story than a book which is 500+ pages. Them Swedes.

I don't think I ever used the word "poignant" to describe a book before, but it fits this book perfectly. The smart Thomasine finds herself stuck in the house of her dying aunt, with her family as disconnected from each other as strangers. Her youngest cousin finds then a wardrobe full of mirrors, and once you step out of it after being inside for a while, you're in an alternate version of the house, with a sweet host, many mirrors, and the chance to heal.

The style reminds me a little of Neil Gaiman, and I do mean that as a compliment, but there was a bonus element... something cathartic. This is beautiful. Please read this book.

OK. Why did I even read this? Two equally good reasons.

1. It was cheap on BookDepository.
2. It was written by a Swedish author I've never heard before.

I bought this one on a whim. Despite my love for all things Swedish I've never heard of Mårten Sandén before reading this book. And it was a pleasant surprise.

The book is a tale of healing. How a dysfunctional family (by family I mean cousins and aunts and uncles together) lives in a big house in Sweden waiting for the death of Henrietta, the great great-aunt of the narrator, if I understood the family relations correctly.

There is Thomasine, who's grieving the death of his little brother; there's Signe who's five and barely talks; there's Wilma who's around thirteen and she struggles to be accepted at school because of her weight and also among her family; there's Erland, the bad boy. All of them will be healed by confronting with the past thanks to a magical room, which contains all the mirrors that there used to be in the house.

Very nice a surprising reading!

За Мортен Санден бях чувал все хубави неща и реших да прочета негова книга. Отначало си представях забавна детска книжка за тайнствена къща, в която се случват мистериозни неща, а няколко хлапета изживяват първите си страхове, пробудени от непознати явления. Като че има доста от това, но, като в криво огледало, събитията се пречупват през погледа на един много интересен персонаж, за когото времето на този свят почти е приключило. „Къщата без огледала“ („Ергон“, 2017, с превод на Диана Райкова) не е познатата призрачна история, макар да има такава атмосфера. Тук настоящето се преплита с миналото, животът и смъртта се материализират във всякакви форми, а щастието се крие зад една илюзия. Или може би някаква магическа трансформация. Книгата увлича още в самото си начало и води към наистина необикновено приключение.

Типичната меланхолична скандинавска история, в най-хубавия смисъл, разбира се. Хареса ми, че посланието ѝ до голяма степен е оставено неизказано и поверено изцяло на интерпретацията на читателя. Totally loved this book. Despite the fact that it is a children's book and is a rather short read, it spoke to me on a more deeper level. I don't actually know how it would go with children these days, everything they get is sickening sweet or boring, not even remotely creepy like when I was young (which wasnt even that long ago, im 21), and this book was creepy. But I liked it for its creepiness, you may want to read it yourself before you actually go reading it to a kid.

Тъжна нордическа история, и то тъгуваща по онзи мрачен и безутешен начин, по който само северните народи могат да скърбят. Времево пътешествие през огледала, изкривяване на континиума и неясно омагьосване на болните от тъга съзнания тип Лабиринтът на Пан, но всичко това остава на заден фон на чисто човешката история за едно нещастно, изключително дисфункционално семейство. Такива книги не харесвам, но ако обичате ефекта на буцата в гърлото, горчивината в устата и присвиването на стомаха, продукт на собствените ви спомени и страхове - то Къщата без огледала може би е вашата порция чуждо нещастие, от което да се поучите. За мен тази мъка може би дойде малко в повече.

I wasn't really sure where to place this but think KS3 and very smart, reflective, deep-thinking readers in Year 6. I would have loved to have explored this with some children in Year 6 for its themes and writing style (translated from Swedish so well by Karin Altenberg).

Told in first person, we follow 11 year old Tomasine as she accompanies her father to a grand house belonging to an aging great-great aunt who nears death. With her come an aunt and uncle and their children. It is whilst playing hide and seek one day that her youngest cousin happens to discover a wardrobe full of mirrors which transport the passenger to a different time.

The book is many things and the way Sanden deals with issues around death and loss seen through the eyes of a young girl is so well done. I was surprised, as the story unfolded, to find that the themes of loss and identity went far deeper than I thought it would: it is a sophisticated and well-considered story in which a sentence here and there can grab your heart with its poignancy and style.

In reading it, I found myself comparing it to Tom's Midnight Garden and Guus Kuijer's The Book of Everything but feel that it is braver in how deeply open and honest it is when children have to cope with understanding and supporting parents when they are dealing with their own grief.

C’è una seconda possibilità per tutti noi e anche se significa mettersi il mondo contro bisogna coglierla perché solo così si riuscirà a costruire la propria felicità.

Thomasina and her father are staying in her great-aunt Henrietta's house. Great-aunt Henrietta is on her deathbed, and Thomasina is wrapped up in caring for her, and in his grief over Thomasina's younger brother's death, the reader discovers. Thomasina's cousins are also in residence, along with an aunt and uncle. All of the residents of the house have their problems and are steeped in their own unhappiness, until one day Signe, the youngest cousin, finds a portal from a mirror-lined wardrobe into an alternate version of the house, occupied by a young girl named Hetty. Visiting the mirror version of the house always seems to help, somehow -- but are some of their problems too big to be solved even by this gentle magic?

This story is a bit Narnia meets Through the Looking Glass, except that the mirror house is not nearly as outright magical as either of the ones in the titles I've mentioned. This is an interesting book, very dark in spots, very Scandinavian. I'd recommend this to a specific sort of child, who enjoys thoughtful books that explore complicated emotional themes, and also to adults who occasionally enjoy children's literature.

Una casa enorme, infinitamente grande per le poche persone che vivono al suo interno, è il teatro in cui si muovono Thomasine e i componenti della sua sgangherata famiglia.
Una famiglia un tempo unita, allegra e felice che, con lo scorrere del tempo, si è allontanata.
I legami, quei fili invisibili e apparentemente invincibili che uniscono le persone, si sono, come capita in numerose storie di altrettante famiglie, logorati e spezzati. I rapporti si sono raffreddati, la vita con i suoi contrattempi e le sue disgrazie è intervenuta e ha, via via, allentato i fili di quell'intreccio bellissimo, che pareva essere creato per durare per sempre, per resistere al tempo.
Come l'enorme dimora che li ha accolti di generazione in generazione, mostrando crepe sempre più profonde, perdendo lo smalto, sbiadendo nei colori, mostrando ruggini e ragnatele sempre nuove, i legami si spezzano e tutto resta sospeso, nel ricordo di ciò che era, di ciò che sarebbe potuto essere, e di ciò che invece è.
Ora quei pezzi frammentati sono tutti lì, riuniti sotto lo stesso tetto, per assistere e vegliare su Henrietta, la prozia malata che, piano piano, si sta spegnendo nel suo letto, accomiatandosi da una vita ricca e lunga.
E mentre una vita si spegne le altre continuano a scorrere, o almeno tentano di trovare un modo per andare avanti, anche se non sempre è quello giusto.
Thomas, ad esempio, il padre di Thomasine, trascorre le sue giornate al capezzale di Henrietta, non se ne distacca mai, se non per brevi momenti, quasi come volesse espiare una colpa.
Thomasine non si capacita di come suo padre sia diventato un uomo così triste e malinconico, ma sa bene come tutto è iniziato, una tragedia, la disgrazia che anni prima ha colpito la sua famiglia, lo ha distrutto, facendolo entrare in un buco nero dal quale non è più riuscito ad uscire.
Suo zio Daniel, un tempo allegro e sorridente, come del resto lo era suo padre, è divenuto il riflesso sbiadito e contorto di ciò che era. Distaccato, freddo, saccente, distante dai suoi stessi figli, che hanno reagito a tanta indifferenza diventando, chi crudele e prepotente come nel caso di Erland, chi chiudendosi in un timoroso mutismo come nel caso della piccola Signe.
Anche zia Kajsa e la cugina Wilma hanno un rapporto burrascoso. La madre completamente assorbita dai problemi economici, e sua figlia che non riesce a far pace con il suo aspetto fisico, considerandosi brutta a grassa.
Tutti troppo presi da se stessi, o dai propri crucci, si isolano, si discostano così tanto da diventare quasi estranei gli uni per gli altri.
Ma la casa della prozia Henrietta svela un segreto, un segreto che metterà tutti, uno per uno, faccia a faccia con la realtà. Li costringerà a guardarsi allo specchio, scrutarsi dentro e scoprirsi, forse per la prima volta, con i propri pregi e difetti.
Osservarsi da vicino e capire chi si è, cosa si è diventati, e cosa li ha portati a quel punto: gli errori, gli sbagli, e poi migliorare in qualche caso, o semplicemente perdonarsi.
Marten Sandén scrive quella che solo apparentemente può sembrare una favola alla "Alice attraverso lo specchio", ma in realtà non c'è niente di strano, assurdo o grottesco in queste pagine. Tutt'altro, ne "La casa senza specchi" la fantasia è solo un pretesto, una metafora, per un romanzo che parla essenzialmente di nascita, di vita, e di morte, perché, come dice la stessa Thomasine, sono queste le storie che vale davvero la pena leggere.
E vale davvero la pena leggere questo libro, in cui troverete emozioni familiari perché sono e saranno anche le vostre. Pensieri che accomunano tutti, ma che fa sempre un certo effetto vedere stampati nero su bianco.
Leggendolo penserete ai tempi andati, a ciò che il tempo vi ha dato e poi portato via, a quello che è stato e non tornerà più, ai rimpianti, alle occasioni perse, a quell'abbraccio non dato quando ancora si era in tempo.
Probabilmente vi farà piangere, sicuramente vi farà emozionare.

Mi capita poche volte di leggere un libro e trovare tutto descritto così perfettamente da desiderare fortemente di esserne l'autrice. Questo è uno di quei casi.
Sin dalle prime pagine si è pervasi da un'atmosfera magica e misteriosa ed allo stesso tempo triste e nostalgica.
In realtà non so neanche dire il perché, ma ho subito iniziato ad amare ciò che veniva raccontato. Sarà stata l'ambientazione (un'antica dimora) i personaggi (uno stuolo di bambini ed i loro affaccendati genitori) o la storia, alquanto surreale, fatto sta che tra quelle pagine mi sono sentita a casa.
L'autore ci parla della giovane Thomasine che si sente persa, trascinata dagli eventi ed incapace di dare una svolta alla sua vita. Si limita ad assistere: alla depressione del padre, alle insicurezze della cugina Wilma, al mutismo della piccola Signe, all'atteggiamento prevaricatore dello zio Daniel, al comportamento stravagante e crudele del cugino Erlend.
È sempre in attesa, di qualcuno o qualcosa che possa guarire la sua famiglia che, ormai in pezzi, non fa che scontrarsi o fingere di non vedersi.
Ma alle volte ciò che tanto bramiamo è proprio davanti ai nostri occhi, anche se non riusciamo a percepirlo. Perché sì, Thomasine e i suoi parenti, compieranno un viaggio in una realtà parallela, che in effetti non è molto dissimile da quella reale. Ma il vero percorso sarà dentro di loro.
È un guardarsi attraverso, affrontare le proprie paure, cambiare ciò che può essere cambiato e accettare tutto il resto, per quanto doloroso sia.
Capire che vita e morte sono parte di una stessa ruota e tutti noi non siamo che minuscoli ingranaggi di un meccanismo infinitamente più grande. Tutto ciò che possiamo fare è vivere, nel migliore dei modi, senza rimpianti e con la capacità di perdonare e perdonarsi.
Un libro solo apparentemente per ragazzi. Una storia che ci appartiene e ci somiglia, e che fa riflettere, come uno specchio in cui, vuoi o non vuoi, sei costretto a guardarti.
Una storia che parla di una famiglia disfunzionale che è in realtà un po' tutte le famiglie.
Di paure, rimorsi, insicurezze e dolori che sono anche le nostre.
Di persone smarrite che in realtà siamo noi.

Pensando a questa storia mi vengono in mente "Le cronache di Narnia" per l'armadio che conduce nella casa specchio, "Coraline e la porta magica" perché come Coraline i personaggi si ritrovano in un luogo molto simile alla casa di Henrietta e "Harry Potter" perché questo armadio rappresenta una sorta di stanza delle necessità.
La protagonista Thomasine ci fa conoscere la sua famiglia, una famiglia dove nessuno è felice, a partire da suo padre che passa le giornate al capezzale della vecchia Henrietta - l'unico insieme a Thomasine a cui sembra interessare veramente di lei - un uomo a cui non brillano più gli occhi da quando ha perso il figlio e che ha smesso di pensare alla propria vita; lo zio Daniel che non sembra interessarsi ai figli; sua zia Kajsa che non ascolta sua figlia Wilma; la cugina Wilma che non ha ancora preso in mano la vita; il cupo cugino Erland di 7 anni che si diverte a far dispetti e la piccola Signe che parla pochissimo.
Tutto cambia quando Signe si nasconde in un grande armadio pieno di specchi e ne esce diversa, più sicura di sè... è l'armadio ad averla trasformata o magari una bambina di nome Hetty che dice di aver conosciuto lì?
La casa specchio e la sua misteriosa abitante rappresenteranno una sorta di psicologo per questa famiglia perché le permetterà di guardarsi allo specchio e di capire che cosa non va.
Dalle pagine dell'autore si respira proprio l'atmosfera iniziale pesante e cupa, si sente la tristezza e la solitudine dei personaggi come si percepisce anche l'alleggerimento della situazione man mano che i componenti della famiglia conoscono Hetty. La magia sarà terapeutica per questa famiglia e Henrietta che sembra superflua in questa storia in realtà giocherà un grande ruolo.

This is the second time I’ve read this book; the first time being around two years ago. This time around I felt as if I got way more out of it. I think this is because I’m older now and my English has progressed a lot. This time I was completely captivated by the poignant use of language and the message that this book sends across. It is a beautiful story about finding yourself and dealing with the problems life can throw at you. These struggles were combined wonderfully with the use of magical realism, which made this story not only more interesting, but also stronger and more memorable. The portrayal of grief in this book was very on point and because of that I kept tearing up throughout the entirety of the second half of the book. The story felt so real that the emotions and the problems that tormented the characters didn’t even had to be spelled out, it was made clear in between sentences. This book may seem like a children’s book, but I believe that many adults can get a lot out of it as well. Even though the main character is a young girl, the narrative was far from childish and I would recommend this book to everyone.

After the death of her baby brother, Thomasine is staying with her cousins at her great aunt Henrietta’s house. The curious thing is that there are no mirrors hanging anywhere in this sprawling old manor. Then Thomasine’s five-year-old cousin Signe, who hardly ever speaks, comes out from the wardrobe where the mirrors are all hidden away suddenly spouting complete sentences and Thomasine begins to wonder what is going on. Using the wardrobe as a transporter, Signe leads her to an alternate world where a girl named Hetty is growing up. As her cousins Wilma and Erland and even her Uncle Daniel all experience this alternate world they are changed by what happens there. Thomasine wonders how it can all be real and why only she remains the same. So desperately does she hope for a way her family can recover from her brother’s death that she returns to the wardrobe world once more—this time bringing along her father. This story about a broken family recovering from a loss leaves much to be read in between the lines. I recommend it for older tweens and teens.

Aynasız Ev'i kütüphanede görüp hem kapağına hem de konusuna bayılıp da almıştım. Adı bile ilgi çekici gelince hemen okudum. İsveç bir yazardan okuduğum ilk eserdi sanırım.

Thomasiene, Henriette halanin, daha doğrusu büyük büyük halasının evinde babası, halası ve amcası tabi ki bir de kuzenleri ile kalmaktadir. Henriette halanın hasta olmasından dolayı orada geçirdikleri günler zorludur, çünkü hem kalabalıklardir hem de Erland adındaki yaramaz kuzeni onu kızdırmaktadir.

Signe adındaki kuzeni ise hiç konuşmamaktadır, ancak bir gün saklambaç oynarken kuzeni bir anda kaybolur ve daha neşeli konuşkan biri haline dönüşür. Sebebi ise aynalarla kaplı bir oda bulması ve o odada yaşadıklarıdir, peki hiç ayna olmayan bu evde aynalarla kaplı bir oda bulmak ve orada neler deneyimleyecekleri Thomasiene için nasıl bir macera oluşturacaktır?

Macera desem de tam olarak maceralik bir kitap değil, ve yazarın anlatmaya çalıştığı ana düşünce güzel olsa da ne yazık ki, anlatamamış. Özellikle Thomasiene karakteri sanki bir çocuk değil de yetişkin bir karaktermis gibi, aynı zamanda olaya pek açıklık getirilmemiş pat diye bitivermis kitap. Beklentimi karşılamadı. Okumak güzel olsa da aklımda bir yer edinmedi.
Ne yazık ki ben sevemedim, o yüzden şans vereceklere keyifli okumalar diliyorum.

3.5 stars. I bought this book in a whim, and I liked it. It was a very easy book to read and very fun as well. For me it feels like one of those books you finish and forget about, but after years suddenly comes back into your life. even though i liked the story, I kind of missed the whole importance of the mirrors. I don't really know why they were never in the house, why they were taken away in the first place. Is it because they are scared of what is looking back at them? What is Henrietta's backstory? I have no clue. So I liked the book but the story behind the words was not really that obvious for me.

У свої 10-14 років я б уподобала цю книжку. Я і зараз її полюбила, але тоді - вона була б мені дивом, і може, я б навіть не здогадалася, хто така Гетті до кінця.
Текст (ну, ок, переклад) дуже комфортний, нехитрий, але водночас рукотворний, гаптований деталями, образами, емоціями. Таємниці, магія (чи, радше, містика), атмосфера старого будинку - така достовірна, аж чути тихеньке рипіння підлоги і теплий запах пилу. Словом, ах!
А ще оформлення видання - ілюстрації Моа Шульман, верстка (здається, така сама, як і у шведському оригіналі) - дуже в настрій.

Ο Marten Sanden γράφει μια ενδιαφέρουσα ιστορία, γεμάτη ανατροπές και συναίσθημα. Μέσα από τις σελίδες του βιβλίου του, παρακολουθούμε τους ήρωες να αλλάξουν, να μεγαλώνουν, να ενηλικιώονται, να ξεπερνούν τους φόβους ακόμα και τον ίδιο τους τον εαυτό, ενώ παράλληλα ζούμε μαζί τους τις εντάσεις της οικογενειακής τους ζωής. Ένα καταπληκτικό ανάγνωσμα για παιδιά (αλλά και για μεγάλους), που θα σας χαρίσει μεγάλες ανατριχίλες και δάκρυα χαράς. Ο Σουηδός συγγραφέας τιμήθηκε το 2015 με το βραβείο Astrid Lindgren για το σύνολο του έργου του.

What a lovely surprise this was. I'm not sure exactly what I was expecting when I started A House Without Mirrors, perhaps something like one of the many quirky middle grades books about magical and mysterious places populated by precocious kids and either clueless or villainous adults. Or maybe a short spooky story about a mysterious house passed down through generations. This is kind of both of those and also completely different. It is a moving and well told novel about loss, love and identity-with a little magic, mystery and creepiness thrown in for good measure.

Another book labeled as a children's book that wasn't written for children. The story and the message of letting go of the things of the past was a good one. What wasn't good was the 2-3 instances of the s-word in a book on the children's bookshelf. I'm glad i read this before handing it my kids...i don't need them calling people "little s@$!s" after reading this book. Would I recommend this book? Yes, but not for kids.
