Merrybelle Montgomery left her career as Homicide Detective when her husband was so ill, and then died. It's been several years and she's still not sure what she wants to do with the rest of her life.
Wyatt Thomas is a Forensic Psychiatrist who finds he needs peace and quiet to finish writing his latest book about serial killers. Good idea ... until Merrybelle discovers a human hand in her yard... which leads her to a secretive burial ground.
After finding many bodies, some decades old, Merrybelle is asked by the small town Sheriff to lend a hand. She winds up teamed with Wyatt to profile the killer. Wasn't what either of them wanted or needed, but they are up to their eye teeth in dead bodies.
Wyatt's sister, Annie, and her partner, Blake, both FBI Agents play a role in that they are dispatched to help identify the killer.
Things really take a turn for the worse when Merrybelle is personally targeted by the killer... and he almost succeeds.

Personally, I enjoyed the addition of information about real serial killers. It certainly lends credibility to the story.
This is a welcome addition to a compelling series. I love the interactions between the characters, especially the relationship of the siblings. This is noted as a Romantic Suspense, but it's very short on the romance, and long on the mystery.
All the books in this series is stand alone. There are no cliff hangers. All the books can be read in any order.
Many thanks to the author for the advanced digital copy of HOLLOW SCREAM. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Wow! You feel like your are involved in a Criminal Minds TV Episode!
I was first introduced to Morgan MacDonald with her Spirit Series. I loved her use of the language and descriptions that were so vivid you could really picture every scene! And now, I just finished Hollow Scream the 5th book in the Thomas Family Series. Although I have read this book out of order, you can definitely read it as a stand-alone. Of course, now I just HAVE to read the first 4! Hollow Scream is the story of a serial killer or could it be 3 since the dates of the corpses found were so vast! BUT the MO for the expanse of time seemed to be brutally the same. What a puzzle. While Forensic Psychiatrist, Wyatt Thomas comes to Crescent Hollow to get away from it all to finish his book on Serial Killers, he gets drawn into the serial killer puzzle and elects to help the FBI one of whom happens to be his sister. And then there is Merrybell Montgomery who was a former city detective who came to Crescent Hollow with her very ill husband to care for him before his death. This books has some very descriptive killings. Can the team figure it all out before even more bodies show up? Who is toying with them and why is Merrybell in danger and although Wyatt was burned and Merrybell lost her husband can they actually get together? loved this book. I was particularly impressed with Morgan's research in serial killers and the very detailed descriptions of each case. Sometimes the breath of information got in the way, but I could NOT put this book down! I received and ARC copy from the author but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own!
Book 5 of the Thomas Family Series certainly doesn't disappoint. Morgan Hannah MacDonald shoots for the moon and hits the sun! Meet Merrybell Montgomery, former Philadelphia Homicide Detective, living in the small mountain town of Crescent Hollow after leaving her job to care for her dying husband. Merrybell is enjoying time with her friends, when Bo, Cindy's dog comes out of the forest toting something. When Cindy, gets Bo to drop the "bird" she thinks he has carried home a scream arises from her mouth. Merrybell goes into cop mode. Bo doesn't have a bird, he's carrying a severed human hand! And so begins the hunt.....when local Sheriff Tully finds multiple bodies, Merrybell recommends he call in the FBI. Annie Thomas has joined the FBIs Behavioral Analyst Unit (BAU), Sheriff Tully and his team called and requested their help after digging up 5 of who knows how many bodies in the George Washington Jefferson National Forest. The BAU is headed to Crescent Hollow to lend a hand - pun intended. As the body count rises the BAU is left to wonder. Not your typical serial killer has been at work here, bodies from recent to back in the 60s and all the years in between. Nothing makes sense. Imagine Annie's surprise when she runs into big brother Wyatt Thomas. Wyatt is in Crescent Hollow trying to finish his next book on serial killers. He's met Merrybell by chance and likes what he sees - after spending some time with her at the family bakery, he's a little bit smitten. When he finds out she's been attacked he goes to her home only to find little sister Annie! Merrybell has been brutally attacked in her own home, possibly by an active serial killer. When the BAU asks for Wyatt's help, and asks him to hide Merrybell, what can he do? To everyone's horror they believe they are digging up bodies of 3 different killers, all using the same dumping ground. Can this team find the monster that is killing today? Can they do it before he or she kills again? Was it the killer that attacked Merrybell, and if so, why? The most recent victims are elderly women.... Can you figure out who done it? Morgan has hit it out of the park again. As usual with her books, even if you haven't enjoyed a previous book in this series, you can enjoy this book. Warning, this author's books are addictive and certainly not for the faint of heart!

My thoughts: 5 stars First off I would love to say thinks to Morgan Hannah MacDonald for send me an ARC copy of Hollow Scream to read and review in change for my honest opinion which this is, second think is that I'm kicking myself right now because I've had the first book to this series and still haven't picked it up, now after reading this I want to, this is the four time I've read something by her and have gotten lost in the story, and her characters, it has everything in that I love , a romance ( that doesn't take any thing away from the story), characters that come to life before your very eyes, and it's also that type of story that grabs you and won't let go, on that note I do have to say that it's not for the faint of heart, because it does go into details about different serial killers and how the killed their victims, and what they did to their bodies. Think goodness I'm not one of those, because this book is dark, and shows the dark side of humanity. But it still is a must read infact the hole series is.So go pick it up and give it a chance.
By the end of Hollow Scream your knowledge of every serial killer known to man will be greatly increased. The author blends real life info on famous serial killers to her fictional ones killing in the book.
Hollow Scream has a large cast of characters. If you have read this series before you know each book features a Thomas sibling. Other than Wyatt, the main hero in this book, the others have all been in the law enforcement field. This book takes place in the small town of Crescent Hollow, Virginia which is surrounded by the George Washington Jefferson National Forest. Turns out a killer or two has been using it as their dumping ground for their victims.
Cast of Characters: Wyatt Thomas is a forensic psychiatrist. Along with his day job he also writes non-fiction books on serial killers. He decides to take time off from work when he gets behind on a book deadline and heads to a cabin in the mountains of Crescent Hollow to finish. We get a glimps into each chapter he is writing which features real life killers and the dilemmas jurors face when they are brought to justice when the defense of not guilty by reason of insanity is used. Interesting stuff.. I would have to agree that most probably are insane but to make sure the “monster” is put away most juries choose to find not insane. While Wyatt is locked away in his cabin he is oblivious to what's going on around him until he comes up for air and finds out multiple bodies have been found in the forest, that his FBI sister Annie and her partner Blake have been called to town and that Merrybell, a woman he connected with one night when he wandered out for food, has been attacked by the killer.
Merrybell Montgomery was a detective with the Philadelphia PD when her husband got terminal cancer. She decided to retire take him back to the town he grew up in so he would be surrounded by family. Its been 1 year since he died and she is still in Crescent Hollow working for her mother in law at her pastry shop. She is part of group of ladies that finds the first body parts and they sheriff who only has a crew of one asks her for help which unfortunately brings her under the radar of the killer.
FBI agent Annie Thomas and her partner Blake Hayashi. Annie was the main lead in the last book and is Wyatt's sister. Annie and Blake are charged with putting all the clues together from victims which turns out spans from the 1960's to current day. This begs the real question of is there more than one killer. They also work closely with forensic anthropologist Vivian Patel who is brought in to help identify when the victims were killed (which gives us a secondary romance between her and Blake).
This book is very explicit in describing the acts done to the victims (of real and the fiction ones from this book) but also about the sexual and physical abuse that most serial killers went through in their childhood that molded them into the killers they became. Lots of sick and interesting facts sprinkled through out the book.
The Thomas Family again comes together in this fifth crime thriller. Wyatt Thomas is a Forensic psychiatrist seeking some alone time to complete another book. An expert on the mind of serial killers; Wyatt seeks solitude in a friends cabin to satisfy his editor and the closely looming deadline. Cut off from current events; Wyatt is shocked to discover his sister Annie Thomas, a FBI Behavioral Analyst in town and unearthing remains that have been discovered in a nearby Forest. Merrybell Montgomery is a widow with a background in law enforcement seeking a direction after the death of her husband. When a friend's golden retriever emerges with a severed hand; Merrybell's training awakens. MacDonald has included insights into serial crimes with graphic detail. If this is a trigger please heed. Remarkable crime drama with the weaving of romance. MacDonald has a flare for characters, suspense, and drama that is amazing. "A copy of this book was provided to me by author with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read and my comments here are my honest opinion."
Wow! What a way to wrap up the Thomas series! (Although, I am not-so-secretly hoping that MacDonald might surprise us with another one.) This was a top notch read and, as per usual with a MacDonald thriller, kept me turning the pages with a fevered voracity late into the night.
I loved the complex and engaging plot which keeps you speculating on how many killers are actually involved. There are three distinct but eerily similar MOs, that could be the work of several serial killers or could, quite possibly, be the work of a single killer that has evolved in his methodology over time. You may find yourself changing your deducement frequently over the course of the book. And, it is that guessing game that adds to the appeal of an already very well-developed story line.
The sub-plot of a budding relationship between Dr. Wyatt Thomas and homicide detective Merrybell Montgomery has the charm of an old-fashioned, whirlwind romance in a modern day setting with tons of chemistry sparking off between the two characters. Even though their attraction was instantaneous, they took the time to allow a friendship to blossom (though at a very accelerated rate) and for mutual trust and respect to grow, before they indulged in their sensual draw to each other.
MacDonald does an excellent job of letting you see directly into the mindset of a killer, which was frightening, disturbing and mesmerizing all at the same time. And, although I can't even begin to fathom or justify the actions of someone existing in that kind of warped, mental state, I can see how traumatic events and/or a cruel or savage upbringing could twist the mind of an individual, heavily attributing to their becoming a true "monster". But, however pitiable that may be, the actions of such a person cannot be sanctioned or excused.
To date, I have not been even the tiniest bit disappointed by a MacDonald novel, and Hollow Scream was no exception. This was an outstanding and immensely interesting work of thriller fiction, and I can't wait to see what she has in store for us, next!
*I received a complimentary ARC of this book in order to read and provide a voluntary, unbiased and honest review, should I choose to do so.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Well now that’s out of the way, this is a well-written, well-researched addition to the Thomas family series. Wyatt Thomas is a forensic psychologist who consults with the FBI, generally regarding serial killers. He goes to a cabin in Virginia to work on his latest book in seclusion and quiet. (Yeah, right. Not so much.) Wyatt’s writing is represented in the Italic sections of Hollow Scream, and goes into detail regarding historical and recent serial killers; if this sort of information bothers you, you have been advised. It disturbs me slightly that I knew about most of the serial killers; however, I once met Ted Bundy, so…
Wyatt’s quiet retreat is suddenly in the midst of a murder when Merrybell Montgomery finds a severed hand brought out of the nearby forest by a pet dog. Merrybell is a retired police officer, and is eventually brought into the case along with Wyatt. The case becomes confusing as the FBI and the local police learn that the killer has been active for years and varies his method of killing.
This is tightly plotted story and is highly recommended. I ended up going back and reading the other books in the series, they are highly recommended as well.
“Hollow Scream” has a decent main storyline, but the book as a whole is disturbingly macabre, as in the literal definition of that word. I’ve read a lot of mysteries, including serial killer police procedurals, but this entry beats all previous books for the blatant presentation of how each murderer killed and the specific results; not to mention the sheer number of the worst killers referenced. I say this as one who has read nonfiction by FBI profilers, psychology books, and books dedicated to specific serial killer cases.
That said, in this book the serial killer information (especially the italicized sections) began to interfere with my interest in following the main storyline. I skimmed or skipped blocks of historical serial killer info, except when it seemed pertinent to the current murders.
This book shows the reader how serial killers think and how law enforcement departments work together to find and arrest these people. When a dog returns a severed hand to his master, Merrybell, who used to work in the police department, things go from a quiet small town to a full blown circus. The FBI is called in, reporters are everywhere. More bodies are found, ranging in different ages from young to old. Is there only one killer or more? If so, they have been at it a while. Can the sheriff department and the FBI find the killer before he kills again? Read the book to find out. I received ARC of this book from the author. The review is of my own choosing and the opinions of the book are all my own.
Another book that I didn't want to put down. Wyatt was the main character along with Merrybell in this fast paced, action packed story. The scenery and the descriptions were fantastic and at times almost too realistic with facts from real serial killers thrown in just added to the entire story. The relationship between the characters was well done and I enjoyed seeing previous characters again. The secondary characters were well developed and very likeable. If you enjoy books with action and mystery about serial killer than this series will deliver it! A little romance thrown in just completes this book. I am giving my voluntary honest review of an ARC of this book I received
Morgan's writing does not disappoint, as she nails another great story.
Forensic psychiatrist Wyatt Thomas travels to Crescent Hollow to finish writing his book and gets roped in to a police drama as a serial killer is discovered operating in the town. Is it one or three killers operating over fifty years?
He falls for an ex cop Merrybell who was attacked and he has sworn to keep her safe, with the help of his FBI Behavioral Analyst sister and her side kick Blake.
Who will be slayed next or will he be caught before his next victim?
Great book and part of a fantastic series. Knock yourself out and buy the lot.
The Thomas Family series is one of my all-time favorites. This is Wyatt’s story. Wow! This story is well written and the details are thoroughly researched and anchored in facts. Although some parts may be a little dark for readers, the author has them clearly marked and skipping them does not detract at all from the overall story. I absolutely loved this story and the pairing of Wyatt and Merrybell. And getting to see the other Thomas siblings is such a great bonus. This is a must read but don’t stop at this one. Do yourself a favor and read the entire series.
I received an ARC from the author for an honest review. Hollow Scream is the 5th book in The Thomas Family series, and i was not disappointed in this book. Morgan Hannah McDonald has out done herself with this one. It will keep you on the edge of your seat with all the excitement, and suspense.. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough, couldn't wait to find out who the killer was. I have read the whole series and by far enjoyed all of them. I would give this book more than 5 stars if i could, and recommend it highly. Thank you Morgan for another enjoyable read!
This story can be read as a standalone but the first four books in the series are also great reads and I highly recommend them. I have been anxious to get Wyatt's story and it did not disappoint. The story is full of mystery, suspense, romance, and twists you won't see coming. I always say the hallmark of a good mystery is one in which you have to wait to figure out the killer along with the characters and this was one you won't see coming! Another really great read from this author. I received an ARC of this book.
I received this ARC copy in exchange for an honest review. Holy crap Morgan doesn't disappoint!!! In this installment of the Thomas Family we get to meet the oldest, Wyatt. He travels to Crescent Hollow to finish his book only to find love and murder. With the aid of his FBI sister Annie and local authorities the killer is caught but not before the woman he falls for his hurt. A great read for anyone who is interested in romantic thrillers. Morgan is one of the best authors I've ever come across and I can't wait to see what she comes up with next.
I have read every book this author has written. Each one is a very scary read which I love. I really enjoy the way the characters are wound through each book. This reminds me of Stephen King who is another favorite. Each of these can also be read alone, but for me the intertwining characters make the story even better. There are also beautiful love stories.
This book was full of suspense and intrigue right from the beginning. Adding in biographies and factoids about real serial killers only made the story seem more realistic. I spent most of the book trying to figure out who the killer, or killers, were, but I never saw the ending coming. Another great read from Morgan Hannah MacDonald.
I found this book gripping from start to finish.so much so I read it in a few days after work. morgans novels are all great thrillers, I love the same characters in them and the love stories that progress along the way. I can recommend this book for any thriller lovers out there.
I devoured this book ! Absolutely thrilling vivid characters wild plot twists could not put it down ! Kept you guessing right till the end. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
Lots of action and full of twists and turns, this book will keep you on the edge of your seat. Morgan has created another masterpiece that rivals some of James Patterson's or Agatha Christie's works.
As always, Ms. MacDonald has a winner! Along with her other "Scream" books, the reader is riveted from beginning to end. I've read quite a few of her books and I'm never disappointed. First class writer and genuinely nice person.
Wow what a read. Suspense to keep you intrigued until the end. Just couldn’t put it down. Received an ARC and appreciated receiving it. Ready for more.
