In England 1869, Lady Bronwen is murdered in a satanic ritual by twelve demon worshipers. She is sent to the Under-realm where she meets Thanatos, its handsome and charmingly demonic ruler who wants Bronwen as his eternal companion. When Bronwen refuses him, Thanatos makes the Lady a deal of her own. If she can track down all of her killers, he will release her from his possession. However, if she cannot resist his seduction, she will remain his forever. Bronwen accepts the deal, trusting herself and her moral upbringing to endure Thanatos. But, as the identity of the twelve are revealed, it becomes clear to Bronwen that she alone values her life. She desperately tries to find something to stay alive for and is forced to question her conscience, religion, social standing and above all, her womanly desires for a man she believes is the devil.
this book is very difficult to rate. I liked the hero but wished he would have been more present. the heroine did a lot of stupid things again and again, it made my eyes rolling. she made a deal with the devil and was supposed to find her killers for revenge, but lost sight of her goal in the course of the story. the fights were described too boring and long-winded and there were too many unnecessary lines of action that came to nothing. especially at the end, where I was constantly waiting for their conclusions only to be left hanging. there is an end and an epilogue that is like "that's it, so now be satisfied". it's not a happy ending, H/h like each other, but there isn't love between them. they aren't together.
if this was a first part of a series or there was a sequel planned, then it would be ok for me, because then hopefully all open questions would be answered in the next book. but with an epilogue and no hint in the title that says "book 1" I have to assume that was it.
and this is how it ends:
+++++++++++ SPOILER +++++++++++ after everyone h cared about left her or died, she kills herself to go back to the under-realm, goes to H and takes off her gown to finally give him her virginity. H is pleased at first, but feels something is off, only to wake up and realize, he dreamed everything. ++++++++++ SPOILER END +++++++++
WTF????? REALLY????? so, where is she? was anything else even real? if yes, then what happened to the rest of her killers? and the villain, her fiancé? he gets away with everything? what happened to her best friend in the woods? how exactly did she die? what was the secret she found out about the fiancé and didn't tell h yet? what is he? has it something to do with the shape-changing wolf/thing that hunted and killed her? what happened at the meeting? what exactly did the fiancé did to h's father?
I really do hope this is not the end and a sequel will answer all the questions. if not, then I would be very disappointed to waste so much time on a book without a happy ending and no conclusions.

Unfortunately this has been added to my Dnf shelf. I just could not get into it and even considered creating a drinking game everytime Bronwen was mentioned ( her name was said roughly 5 times per page every page) and when I finally started to enjoy it they changed who the character they were talking about. I'm disappointed as it sounded brilliant and I really wanted to enjoy it but just couldn't. At least I got it on Ku so didn't waste any money
Good read, excited to read the second book in this set, only annoyance is that the heroine keeps getting herself into scraps rather than thinking things through....she’s developing her kick arse side too slowly for me...just my own personal niggle though. Do recommend this book, read it....lots of depth....
Have you ever read a book, that had you physically grabbing at air? Searching for more of it to read. Yea, that was me when I finished this book. It was great and I hope there will be more books. Thantos was the perfect anti hero. It was dark and gripping and I absolutely loved it.
I got to 56% of this book which is where it got jogged down in innate useless stuff.
The premise of the book is brilliant, the 'devil' is pithy and the dialogue really good with him but... It seemed to get stuck and I got bored waiting to see what happened. That it was without technology, since it was set in the 1890's England, meant that things felt a little more sinister, like she couldn't call for help or at least not using a mobile phone. That was refreshing, to go back a little to the days when a good listen at a door was necessary and phones didn't go off every two minutes.
I actually really enjoyed this! The heroine is just a lady put in a shit situation but learning to find herself and her voice. And through it all dealing with the god of death. It was different and dark and I found it an easy read with lots of tension thrown in!
