This seems to be the year for me to read the Bible (King James Version, always) in random order, driven to it by books, movies, and series that reference certain books within it.
I read The Book of Esther today because The Book of V.: A Novel, by Anna Solomon, is very much a retelling of it in many ways. Having done so, I wish I had read them in reverse. Everything in Ms Solomon's book (well, OK, maybe not _everything_, but certainly a great deal more) makes more sense if you have read the traditional story recently, and not approximately 45 years ago (ahem).
I'm definitely not gonna rate anything in the Bible. It is what it is. But I will say that I think both Vashti and Esther had a lot of gumption, and good on them for it!
Also? Mordecai was in sore need of an editor; he was big on saying the same thing twice, albeit in slightly different ways.
Finally, I now understand Purim a lot better, because in addition to reading Esther I also read some commentary on it.
I have to wonder what the next book will reveal itself to be.....
I love the book of Esther. This is the only book in the Bible where the name God is not mentioned but you could see God's Hand throughout the entire book. Esther was from a humble background and was obedient in listener to her uncle Mordecai who was like a mentor and a father figure to her. Her humility brought her favour and she rose all the way to the throne. Despite her fears when Haman schemed to kill her people, the Jews, she found it within herself to risk her life entering the kings presence uninvited. The king was so fascinate by her that he stated that any request she had would be granted up to half his kingdom. What I appreciate was although she was afraid and hesitated initially, she found it within herself to do the right thing despite the odd,s but to God be the glory she was triumphant and the gallows that Haman set up, he swung from it. God's name may not have been mentioned but His presence and actions were felt in a mighty way.
Generally speaking, my favorite book of the Bible is whichever one I am reading at the time... so, Esther is definitely one of my favorites. The name of God is not mentioned in Esther, per se, but His handprints are all over it. I mean, when it discusses the Jews fasting and praying just Who do you think they were praying to? I currently read 5 chapters of the Old Testament daily but I HAD to read this whole book... it's just that interesting!
The book of Esther is a wonderful book in the Bible of a courageous young woman who became Queen and risked her life for the sake of her people. It also shows how God is always at work in the lives of people and if we listen to His calling and follow His lead, He can do great things through His people. Even when it looks like evil will prevail, God is always in control and at work.
