Sam always knew he had a dark side, but many years of unfulfilling one-night stands would pass before he learned that his fantasies had a BDSM.

By the time Sam comes to realise that there’s only one girl he has ever truly loved, he has already lost her; Imogen is now finding her own way in life and Sam’s kinky preferences mean that their paths cannot ever cross again.

This compelling story is one of love and kink, of triumph and heartache, and of the joys and complications that fate so capriciously deals out.

Having previously read an autobiographical book on BDSM (Vanilla Breaks by David Wade), I was curious about what else was out there in the genre. I wasn't too keen on the popular Fifty Shades series, which my wife told me all her friends were secretly reading at the time, and instead wanted something a bit more true to life. I found Convergence and thought, 'well, why not?' With no particularly high expectations, it turned out to be a surprisingly enjoyable read.

The male protagonist, Sam, is no Christian Grey. He's just a regular guy trying to make his way through life one day at a time. He knows that his preference for kinky sex sets him apart from the mainstream.

The story essentially describes how the relationship with his best female friend, Imogen, falls apart after he drunkenly tries it on with her, and how he then, for as long as possible, tries to ignore his dominant traits. The story follows a few of his relationships, meeting some interesting characters along the way.

At the same time, Imogen has moved on with her life, suffering traumas and hardship. She also meets an interesting character or two and her life is forever altered.

Sam's and Imogen's worlds are wildly different, busy and chaotic, and I found myself really caring about whether the two of them would meet up again in the end. It's a romance, albeit in a refreshingly un-Hollywood style. I can imagine this sort of thing happening in real life, given the way the character's lives and actions are described.

Overall, a well written and engaging story, with some kinky sex scenes thrown in (nothing too hardcore), and it's an interesting insight into the world of BDSM.
