What does it mean to be married? What do we commit to when we commit to each other for life? On a tense, hot summer night at the New York Institute, one couple will begin to find out as they celebrate their engagement. Another couple will explore that step, only to be thrown back by a violent emergency that calls them to duty before love.
When Simon Lewis spontaneously proposes to Isabelle Lightwood, Clary Fairchild has two days to plan a grand engagement party. With a lot of help from their Downworlder and mundane friends, Clary and Jace Herondale pull it off.
But it wouldn't be the Shadow World if trouble didn't arrive to threaten even the most joyous occasion. As the new co-head of the New York Institute, Clary must deal with an impending Downworlder civil war, all while trying to keep Isabelle away from a room suspiciously full of tulips, to which she is dangerously allergic.
Clary and Jace finally find a moment for themselves, but Magnus Bane interrupts them before they can have the conversation they really need to have – a conversation about that longest of conversations, marriage, that they may never get to have if they don't survive the night...
Cassandra Clare was born to American parents in Tehran, Iran and spent much of her childhood travelling the world with her family, including one trek through the Himalayas as a toddler where she spent a month living in her father’s backpack. She lived in France, England and Switzerland before she was ten years old.
Since her family moved around so much she found familiarity in books and went everywhere with a book under her arm. She spent her high school years in Los Angeles where she used to write stories to amuse her classmates, including an epic novel called “The Beautiful Cassandra” based on a Jane Austen short story of the same name (and which later inspired her current pen name).
After college, Cassie lived in Los Angeles and New York where she worked at various entertainment magazines and even some rather suspect tabloids where she reported on Brad and Angelina’s world travels and Britney Spears’ wardrobe malfunctions. She started working on her YA novel, City of Bones, in 2004, inspired by the urban landscape of Manhattan, her favourite city. She turned to writing fantasy fiction full time in 2006 and hopes never to have to write about Paris Hilton again. Cassie’s first professional writing sale was a short story called “The Girl’s Guide to Defeating the Dark Lord” in a Baen anthology of humor fantasy. Cassie hates working at home alone because she always gets distracted by reality TV shows and the antics of her cats, so she usually sets out to write in local coffee shops and restaurants. She likes to work in the company of her friends, who see that she sticks to her deadlines.
City of Bones was her first novel. Sword Catcher is her most recent novel.
”The sounds of laughter and music from outside were blurring; she could hear Jace’s quick breathing, remembered the boy he had been, in the grass with her in front of the Wayland Manor in Idris, when they had kissed and kissed and she had realized that love could cut you like the edge of a blade.”
Okay so this actually made me feel as
sappy, maudlin, nostalgic and emotional
as I thought I would feel. *lol*
It wasn’t exactly what I expected though. For some reason I thought I’d get an insight at Clary’s thoughts and why she was about to say I mean like seriously, Cassie!!?? There’s got to be more than just bad dreams and dubious foreboding to answer like that. XD
Anyway, I really loved to see a little bit of Alec and Magnus and of course they were awesome again.
”Alec,” Clary said firmly. “They won’t take Rafe away from you. We won’t let them.” “I won’t let them,” said Alec. “I’d kill them all first. But that would be awkward and ruin the party.”
Aww Alec my fierce and deadly papa tiger!! <333
Magnus waved a dismissive hand. “I’ve walked in on your ancestors doing worse,” he said. “Besides it’s an emergency.”
*LMAO* Yes, Magnus, sweetheart. You’ve walked in on them doing worse. *nods, suppresses a chuckle and smirks*
I just love this universe!!! And by the Angels, I’m living for those small hints and references that always appear when you least expect them. It’s such a wonderful experience and it gives me life!!! I’ll never get tired of this world and my precious boys! =)))
All told, this was a nice addition to the series, since there didn’t happen all too much it didn’t really blow my mind though. *lol*
Conclusion: “A Long Conversation” is a nice short story and if you’re a die-hard fan and want to dive into the Shadowhunter world for a little while this might exactly be what you’ve been looking for. ;-)
"Clary couldn’t help but remember the first time she’d seen him in the Institute, playing the piano, his back to her. Alec? he’d said. Is that you? "
You know what breaks my heart (in the best possible way, obviously!) the most? All those shared moments and references and history between The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices, the ones you don't pick up when you first read them cause there are simply too many things happening, too many new characters and places and situations to keep track of. The ones that hit you right in the chest when you see Tessa through Clary's eyes, when Jace reacts the same way Jem once did, when Will comes alive once more and everything is magical and as it should be. I have such love for this world and my heart is so full (and there may or may not be tears involved as well) and still, I can't put into words how grateful I am to have these books and this world and these people in my life. What I can and will do, though, is keep loving them while anxiously anticipating whichever of the next instalments of series old and new comes next!
Right until this moment I hadn't realize just how much I missed the original group. This story was just so perfect and made me remember just how much I love "The Mortal Instruments" and how much I want to re-read them.
The whole story revolves around Simon and Isabelle's engagement party and the feelings that brings. Narrated from Clary's POV, to keep the tradition, it felt like returning home, like getting back into your favorite and most comfortable shirt.
The moment, of course, is one that I'm already familiar with, since -thankfully- I'm caught out in the Shadowhunter world. Still, it was wonderful to revisit the New York Institute and see the moment unfold in front of my own eyes.
I laughed a great deal with their shenanigans and interactions, but at the same time, it was great to see how at ease the different characters are now with one another.
There's really not much to say since the story is super short, and so must be my review.
I read this at the end of Lady Midnight, I believe. Unpopular opinion, but I love Clary Fairchild. She's my favorite series MC out of her, Tessa, and Emma. I just, I love her. It was great to see her, and I just adore everyone from TMI - Clary, Simon, Jace, Izzy, Alec, Magnus... I love these characters with a love I haven't honestly felt for anyone else in all of Cassandra Clare's books.
I have to find out what is going on with Clary. Don't die on me girl, if that's the case...
I wish this was longer, I just miss them all so much. I really miss reading in clary’s perspective but anyway, I’m happy I could read about them again and see how happy everyone is, it brings me so much joy!
Spoiler: quoted lines here :) . Jace leaned away from Clary, but only slightly. His eyes were narrowed. “I would say ‘Don’t you knock?’ but it seems evident you don’t,” he said. “We are, however, busy.” . Magnus waved a dismissive hand. “I’ve walked in on your ancestors doing worse,” he said. “Besides, it’s an emergency.” . Ahh remember Will and Tessa ?? Anyway, I just loved this short story, I love to read everything that happens behind the scenes and this is one where all we were reading about was Emma Carstairs and the Blackthorns ❤️
I forgot how much I missed Clary and Jace and Izzy and Simon and Alec and Magnus and everyone at the New York Institute. I love them so much. It's like reconnecting with old friend~. They will forever have my heart.
And I've accepted I am dedicating my entire life to the Shadowhunters, as long as Cassie keeps writing them, I'll be here to read them.
“I ordered roses. I swear I did. I don’t know what happened. I’ll go down to the florist and kill them tomorrow. Or maybe Alec might do it. He seems murderous tonight.” - Clarissa Fairchild

“I’m getting married! To Simon! I’m happy! I used to think there was something weak about giving your heart to someone. That they might break it. But I know better now.” - Isabelle Lightwood
➴❝Come on, you saved the world once, remember? I believe in you ❞
➴❝Alec?—he’d said—Is that you? ❞
➴❝When you and Simon first got to be friends and he brought you home from school, my mom said to me:‘That girl is going to bring magic into his life’—And you did❞
➴❝He stood up and came over to where Clary was standing by the door.“Wise girl”—he said ❞
➴❝Clary paused—Okay-she said.Good-bye, then.Have a nice day ❞
This is a cute installment! It is before Lady Midnight but I still love the Jace and Clary updates! Also the Alec and Magnus and Simon and Izzy! I'm a sucker for them all!
Okay, so, this was a very cute little story to fit in among the events of Lady Midnight. I obviously will take any and all opportunities to be with my favorite characters in this world — and many of them appear here!
Had to search for this story because it wasn’t in my copy of Lady Midnight but I’m so glad I got to see my favorites all living their best lives 💕 (well, sort of)
HOWEVER, Clace has suffered enough can we please just leave them be? 😭
Then again... if it means we get to see more of them in LoS then I guess I’m not too mad about it
