Tactical Reading: A Snappy Guide to the Snap Election 2017

Rate this book
In an astonishing turn of events, Theresa May’s decision to call a General Election for June 2017 made British history. Since Brexit shocked the cultural elite last year, Britain has been shaken by terrorist attack, women’s marches larger than any since the Second Wave have taken to the streets, and only now do we realise how divided our society really is. The election aims to bring stability and certainty back to Britain, but if there is anything we can be sure of in modern politics, it is that no outcome can be assumed. Cutting through mediaspeak, this book gives an edgy, intelligent overview of the main parties, characters, and factors influencing the General Election. The cast at Westminster has never been larger or more varied. The stage is set. The population must be prepared to decide.

With an introduction from world-famous pollster, Nik Nanos, this paperback gathers together a broad array of voices, ages and reactions in order to present essays on all important aspects of the General Election – from the youth on social media, to the Welsh nationalist voting for the return of EU farming subsidies. What these writers have in common is that each has a unique viewpoint to present - but more than that: a plea for a certain side of the story to be heard. This witty, readable book represents an intervention of alternative voices, far from the Westminster bubble. Britain has gone too long ignoring what it does not want to think about.

When I picked this up from the bookshelf, I thought it would teach me a lot. It told me a lot of things I hadn't heard before. That's not the same thing.
