THREE HEART-STOPPING POLICE PROCEDURALS AT A KILLER PRICE! This nicely-priced bundle of Volumes 1-3 of Kimberly Amato’s Jasmine Steele series is made to order for fans of hard-boiled police procedurals, badass female sleuths, and bargains. Those who can't get enough of the exciting new wave of hard-boiled women sleuths, created by writers like Megan Abbott, Laura Lippmann, Lisa Lutz, and Vicki Hendricks will love Amato’s take-no-prisoners style, her unflinching attention to harrowing detail, and her tough-as-nails but soft-hearted detective. Lovers of traditional mysteries will appreciate the web of fierce loyalty tempered with fearful caution that links Jazz’s tiny but hardy support system—both at work and at home. Somehow or other, in each book, Amato manages to mix all the excitement of an action thriller with the swirling emotions of a mainstream psychological novel.STEELE INTENT "Don't think you're untouchable…you or your son." Then a dial tone... Home is no haven with that that kind of caller on the line. Shrewd, hardened New York homicide detective Jasmine (“Jazz) Steele’s just come back from a grisly crime scene involving the body of a brutally-beaten young girl, the second she's investigated this week. That was horrendous, but with these eight words, ending ominously in “your son,” Jazz’s immediate fear is for her nephew Chase, who’s already been through hell in his seven short years. In Kimberly Amato’s hard-boiled yet deeply emotional police procedural, no one is spared tough breaks and turbulent anguish. A lesser cop than Jazz would barely be able to cope. With a shadow on Chase and the aid of her friends’ grace-under-fire and brandy-fueled heart-to-hearts, Jazz--who has more 'tude than even the toughest investigator, male or female--navigates the cruel streets of New York City while struggling to keep custody of the only family she has left, doggedly in search of the elusive, psychopathic murderer who seems to be killing off women who look suspiciously like someone close to Jazz... and she's not willing to lose yet another person she loves. MELTING STEELE In Jasmine Steele’s heartbreaking new case, an entire family's been viciously murdered. Hard-boiled author Kimberly Amato pulls no punches. The mother's throat was slit while trying to call for help and the father was shot in the chest, then gruesomely sliced up while still alive, like a scene from a horror film. Also found, the body of their young son, about Jazz’s son’s age, left in the closet with a snapped neck. But it's the remaining clues to a missing fourth victim--a teenage daughter named Kaley--that leave her reeling. Kaley's seemingly disappeared without a trace. Soon Jazz discovers that the family had plenty of disturbing skeletons in its closet. Skeletons possibly warranting hiring a hit man on the Internet… BREAKING STEELEGory video game violence comes home to roost when two store managers are brutally murdered in the back room of their gaming shop just before peek holiday season. The corporation that owns the store is doing everything it can to keep the matter quiet—but they won’t succeed if detective Jasmine Steele cracks the case. Because said corporation has plenty of skeletons in its closet; and one of them is far too familiar to our heroine… Kimberly Amato serves up a heart-pounding, chilling addition to the Jasmine Steele hard-boiled mystery series—a fast-paced police procedura

This three book set is different than most books I've read and benefits from being read as a set. The main character, Jasmine Steele, is a thirty something homicide detective in NYC. Her brother and his wife were killed in an auto accident, leaving her guardianship of their young son, Chase. And her girlfriend is the NYC police psychologist, who left them after Chase moved in with them. The ME is a childhood friend and her captain is like a father. Her new partner, Will, is a former Marine and like a big brother. Then there's Hadley, another childhood friend who stars in slasher movies. But, the unexpected is Jasmine's unannounced vivid dreams and nightmares. Jas is intent on bringing justice for her brother and his wife, which leads her to a case that will demand everything from her. It's often hard for her to determine what is real, what is important, and what is worth the risk. Somehow, Jas makes it through to the finish line at the end of book three, but it's not without great personal cost and lots of self examination. I enjoyed this series, which caught hold and wouldn't let me leave before finishing, and am looking forward to book four.
I am a strong writer and a total grammarian and have been an editor at many of my jobs. In the first page I noticed the clunky style and grammatical and sentence structure mistakes, and just lost interest.
For one little instance, on page 13 she says “in this field you have to find SOMETHING to blow off steam.” Huh? Are you maybe looking for a WAY to blow off steam, or are you actually speaking of steamboats? A steam iron? These are fifth grade mistakes! It looked there would be plenty of the same.
I’ve written a novel and know how challenging it is. You’ve got to at least have good writing chops though. They may come later in the book but there wasn’t enough to hold me.
What a great storyline. Full of tension, red herrings, and psychological strain on the main character, Jazz and those she fights the bad guys with.
I loved the way that Jazz and Frankie's relationship is dealt with. Showing that love is love in whatever form it takes. A family doesn't have to be blood-related.
My only real grumble was that my version had some silly spelling mistakes and I would have preferred some kind of page break when the action was jumping days, weeks or months ahead. It was kind of jarring to delve into the next paragraph and realise there was a significant time jump.
Other than that I would highly recommend this read!
How is it that so many supposedly literate proofreaders, editors, and writers are still staggering through the swamp of the verbs lay and lie?! They should have emerged onto dry land in highschool. Besides that annoyance, there were just too many plot continuity hiccups to make this a pleasant reading experience. And since when does a lead homicide investigator not care about manner of death in a series of killings? I really tried, for the sake of some interesting characters and relationships, to keep going, but my mental red pen was starting to hemorrhage. Take this one back to the writers' group for some serious reworking.
I enjoyed this series more than I thought I would. It started out slow, but as the book progressed it became more interesting. I had moments where I felt the story went on a bit longer than needed and I was taken aback, by how negatively Puerto Rico was portrayed. I have been going there my whole life and yes, there are terrible crimes there, but the whole island is not as it was described in the story. I really liked Jasmine’s character & determination throughout the book.
First, I very rarely give a 5 stars rating but this author earned every one of them. Suspend your judgements and ride the emotional, often frustrating ups, downs, insides, outsides, twists and turns of this legal based series. There are some surprises, some touching words, mysteries all to challenge the reader to guess or conclude the outcome. Hope you enjoy as much as I did.
Looking back at some of the poorer reviews, I wonder if this is a new, improved version, or if I was so headlong into the suspense that I did not notice spelling errors and sentence fragments. It was a total enjoyment, even though stressful thinking of those who really live through some of these scenarios -- hopefully not packed in as tightly as the ones in this series.
All 3 stories are interesting and well told. The characters seem like real people we all might know. Given that, they desperately need editing to clean up things like air when err would be appropriate.
Fabulous. Fabulous. Fabulous. Omg. I loved these three books. My god. The plot. The characters. The twists and turns, are simply incredible. Can't wait to read the next ones. Brilliant author.
Well written and great character development, If you don't like police or murder mystery,, skip this book. If you are a fan of good writing and great suspense, read and enjoy.
This series is outstanding, like the farmer in the field!Noutg
Nothing to dislike, the story line was as realistic as could be. It grabs you and will not turn you loose. Didn’t like it, I loved it. Do yourself a favor and grab a copy!
I thoroughly enjoyed the stories in this collection! The characters were interesting and well developed. The twists and turns of the plots were interesting, I had a hard time putting the book down!!! I think anyone who likes mysteries would enjoy reading them.
This is actually the second time I read these books And every time I read them I can't put him down I recommend this series the great characters and great story line on to the next book
The editing in this book sucked! Major misspellings and completely wrong words used. I almost wasn’t able to finish the first book but kept hoping it would get better. It didn’t. I’m not even bothering with the other two in the set.
This was a good mystery series; but it could have been shorter if there hadn't been so much psycho babble. I guessed early on that the author had to be a psychology major.
I loved this book couldn't wait to open it again and again. I never would have closed til I finished the series if I didn't have other obligations lol can't wait to read more :-) Thank you
