Lilias Cameron was told by a seer that she would one day marry a dark man with stormy eyes. He sounded like a beast to her, but she never forgot. Now as her mother lies dying there is a hunt for the best woman of the clan to marry their enemy to seal a peace treaty. Laird Dirk MacDougall has promised his troublesome cousin and enemy the best woman in the clan for a bride. Actually delivering her is going to prove a problem. War is to be avoided, no matter the cost. Too many lives are at stake to change things. An exciting journey through the Scottish highlands with a wonderful tormented hero and a very brave heroine. Note to self, I love the word "crapulous" for hungover or drunk. I might just have to use it all the time now. Lots of adventure. I loved it.
This novella was amazing!!! It was so good I was sad when it was over because I wanted more!!! Well written and fantastic characters!! Eliza Knight never disappoints in my opinion. I read this novella as part of the Forbidden Highlands collection. From the beginning you can tell that Dirk, Laird of Twilight is different than some heros we encounter in historical romance novels. There is something in his demeanor and the way he carries himself that sets him apart. He is brooding and fierce without giving the reader any reason to doubt his heroism and nobility. You are rooting for him from page one. The heroin is also quite fantastic. She is not overly defiant and head strong as well as she is not a complete damsel in distress. I believe that is why I feel the characters are written so superbly. The story was a quick read for the simple fact that you are spell bound by a charming laird and a equally charming lady who fight every natural instinct to try and do the right thing by their country and people. I was content with the ending however I could have ready many more chapters on their tale. Fantastic novella by an incredibly talented writer!!!
Great book. I love how Dirk likes Lilias as she is.She is smart, feisty and puts Dirk in his place. She isn’t what you expect for the times and that makes it great to see. I don’t think Dirk is what you expect of men of his time as well. He is honored to have his position, respects his people, men and woman but is also very caring and honest. He doesn’t like to put people in the line of danger but does when necessary. His cousin makes it necessary. Dirk comes off as gruff but is really a teddy bear when it comes to family and his people. He is fierce and loyal. Kind and honest.
A cousin who is cruel, spoiled and very uncaring. So glad to see Dirk put him in his place. But he almost loses a chance at love to gain peace with this man.
Dirk and Lilias meet under tough circumstances but the attraction is through the roof. They learn about each other as he is bringing her to a situation neither likes. Dirk tries so hard to be valiant and true to his word but it is awfully hard for him due to how much he likes LIlias. And as he gets to know her he falls more in love with her. She doesn’t back down from things, speaks her mind and is loyal and loving. All that dirk loves. I love how they are equals in Dirk’s mind and he has so much respect for her. Their love grows as they get to know one another but Dirk struggles with doing what is right for his people and his heart. So does LIlias in a way but not like Dirk. In the end we do see love prevail as does kindness and loyalty.
the story gives both the point of view of Dirk and Lilias and we see just how hard all of this is on Dirk. We see their attraction play out and see them struggle with duty and what is right. We see them fall in love and find a way to be together. A wonderfully written story of duty, love and loyalty. Of respect and doing what is right even when it is hard. Wonderfully written full of sassy moments, honesty and action while our two main characters get to know one another and fall in love.
Earlier this year, a novella came out inside a wonderful little book bundle titled " Forbidden Highlands". This story is now a full length book also titled " The Laird of Twilight". It is the story of two people, Laird Dirk and Lady Lilias. There has been a long conflict between Dirk's clan and that of a distant cousin named Morten Olafsson. Olafsson is a nasty fellow. In an attempt to broker a peace agreement, to save lives, Dirk asks Olafsson what he can give him to stop the fighting - it's simple- Olafsson wants Dirk's betrothed. At first it's not such a sacrifice. Dirk isn't betrothed. So he promises his enemy a woman from his clan- the most beautiful and accomplished one they have amongst them. Dirk has his mother and grandmother act as the 'search committee' of sorts, for the clan girl he can give to his enemy in a bid to save his people. The women choose Lilias. Lilias doesn't want to marry this Olafsson. She's suffered her own loss, she doesn't want to be a bargaining chip in a war that isn't even her own! But if she refuses, her family and clan may suffer. And a long time ago there was a prophecy.... But then it's his task to deliver Lilias to Olafsson. Along the way things begin to change. The two begin to see and understand each other. The longing begins. What would happen if Lilias didn't go to Olafsson? Is it worth war to chance it? Is there any other way? Without giving up any spoilers, this is a terrific plot, filled with intrigue, action, longing, and heat. I enjoyed the novella, but the book is filled with sooo much more detail and explanation- I couldn't put it down. I highly recommend this story to lovers of historical fiction, especially with a Scottish Laird like Dirk!
How does a tale about a woman being given away as a bride to complete a peace treaty turn out to be a romantic love story? Having a verra strong female unwilling bride is a major first step. And as small a role as the other women may play in this novel, their strength stands out as well.
Lilias Cameron knows her role in her family and later in her role as peacekeeper for her people. It all happens so quickly she has no time to plan what she will do. She really doesn't know what to expect except that the man she is suddenly betrothed to is a monster who is responsible for ravaging her country repeatedly. Her Lord, whom she has never seen, is known as a man of honor but Lilias knows nothing more about him. He even puts the task of choosing a bride for his cousin in the hands of his mother and grandmother. Women have always been too much trouble, he has no plans to become tied to one. Besides, his family is cursed. He figures he will be the end of his lineage.
The characters are wonderful, the language and settings make it easy to suspend disbelief and travel along with Dirk and Lilias on this dreary journey. Only it is not dreary. Fraught with sexual tension and conflicting emotions, as each knows what must be done even as their feelings grow. What is more important - one's reputation as honorable or true love, which is unexpected. A captivating escape into a more primitive era that will melt your heart.
A SOLID 3.5 STARS! I HAVE ALWAYS ENJOYED A GOOD HIGHLAND STORY, AND THIS TABOO ROMANCE WAS TOO GOOD TO PASS UP ON. BUT WHAT WOULD HAVE MADE IT BETTER WAS THE AMPLIFICATION OF ITS ANGST. I FELT LIKE IT WAS GOING TO GET TO A GOOD CLIMAX BUT IT ALL ENDED TOO SOON, LEAVING ME A LITTLE HIGH AND DRY.
OUR HERO is a laird who has promised his distant cousin that he shall find him a bride if that would make peace between their clans. However, he didn't count on being so wholly attracted to her and each moment spent in her arms only magnified his feelings until he's certain it would be torture without her because he's gone and fallen for the bride of another man. Oh, the attraction was quite passionate but I expected more angst but unfortunately it all ended way too soon when he proposes to her.
OUR HEROINE has always known her destiny, to be married to a dark haired man with stormy eyes. Who was to know he would be the same man leading her to 'slaughter' by sacrificing her to the enemy? She cannot help but grow attracted to him, finding him a man of honour and one she feels inexplicably safe with and loved. How will she ever convince him that they are meant to be?
OVERALL this story here pretty fast for me because I just devoured their entire chemistry before my eyes. Its just a little sad there wasn't more angst to deliver that final impact before the grand HEA.
In order to stop a continued battle with his enemy cousin, Laird Dirk MacDougall, Laird of the Isles agrees to find a marriage alliance for his cousin. The requirements are that she must be a woman of worth, of beauty, and strength of blood.".
He meets Lady Lilias Cameron and he must escort her to his enemy. It is time to fulfill the treaty alliance. He realizes she surely is "a woman of worth, of beauty, and strength of blood.". His mother and grandmother mother chose too well in his opinion.
Lilias, knows she should hate the man who is delivering her to someone cruel, old and mean. Instead she is very attracted to him. She is reminded of a childhood prophecy that was forseen for her future..."He is dark of hair, stormy eyes, fiercer than the wickedest gale storm and he commands Twilight. More and more she realizes how much Dirk MacDougall.
Will a battle finally be put to rest? Or will we witness a battle of hearts? Which scenario triumph? Who will be brave enough to be the ripple.
I enjoyed this story immensely! This series has been very good!
I'm both disappointed and discouraged at how Eliza would decided to begin this next story. I don't appreciate reading the first 2 chapters of the next story with repeating the last 2 chapters of the previous story. While I enjoy the numerous highlander stories by Eliza, look at what stands out the most. I have only just begun this next series and wanted to write this review now. To say I am disappointed is an understatement. I am angry to waste my time with 2 chapters of a new story that I've already read.

The Scottish were very superstitious, they had their healers and their seers. A forced visit at a very young age left Lilias with a future legacy. A dark haired man was her destiny. A very intelligent young woman, she is chosen to be the sacrificial bride to save her family and her clan. Lilias and Dirk's story was such a wild ride. Dirk just wanted to stop fighting his cousin and personally deliver a bride to Olafsson for a final resolution to the constant battles. Dirk just didn't plan to fall in love with the beautiful, intelligent and charming woman that his mother and grandmother had chosen. The dialogue and interactions between Dirk and Lilias are wonderfully written.
A perfect addition to the MacDougal Legacy Series!
Dirk, Laird MacDougall had an opportunity for peace and to keep his distant cousin Olphasson from continuing to attack. Dirk agreed to find him a wife from his clan as a peace offering. Sacrifice one for the safety of many. Lilias was the chosen one although she did not see it as a honor. When she first met Dirk, they both felt something instantly. Yet Dirk had to deliver her to his cousin. Their journey brought obstacles to overcome, including their growing attachment to each other.
I love these books. I have read the Stolen Bride, Conquered Bride, Sutherland Legacy, and now MnDougall Legacy. Good stories, however, Eliza needs to proofread her work or she needs a better editor. I find cases of missing articles, words that don’t fit. In this book I found places where Lilias’s hair is described as golden and in another black as a raven’s wing. So which is it?
Eliza Knight writes another great story. In this story Dirk MacDougall is ready to call a halt to all of fighting. A young lady is found. The next part is to meet, sign the papers and go back home. Things change and now they have to get ready for a fight. There is a lot happening. I would recommend reading the book just to see the events unfold.
While, #2, it can be read as a stand alone. A quick read with an enjoyable cast of characters and an I interesting and intriguing plot. Well written, steady paced, the storyline flowed seemingly and was well executed. I enjoyed the H/H, they were a great couple. Another hit for Eliza Knight.
A Laird must keep his end of the treaty to find a wife for his distant cousin who would take everything he has. But the woman must be suitable as if she was the wife for the Laird. How can a Laird give up what he wants for himself? A passionate romance for a good read.
Having read many of this author’s books this one just knocked my socks off! It has many twists and turns. You will lose many winks as you read when you should be sleeping.
How can anyone weight their options in the 13th century when it was not a word for 400 years. I didn't read anymore after options appeared. Sorry. I forgot you use it in all your books of that time period.
The chemistry between Dirk & Lilias was obvious right from the start. The part you had to figure out, was how would they break the marriage contract between the Norseman and Lilias. Great read, now on to the next.
I love it. The story was very light and was not mystery just a little bit war againts enemy. Sometime i need to have break from mystery and little bit thriller.
Didn't expected to love this story as much as I do now.Well written & definately without any plot holes,..Really enjoyed how she(author) managed to bring out Lilias & Dirk story based on a journey of 7 days..Recommended to those who are looking for a short, steamy regency romance series with a good storyline..
The only complain I have is the lack of more emotional attachment in ch 10,11,12..These are most important chapters in the whole story (from my view) as this is where Lilias & Dirk relation moves to more an emotional stage.. Not only that, these are parts where Lilias engages with other characters for which is why she earns the favor of the troup in the end...In some parts in those, it only emphasized on their physical attraction rather than feelings & companionship between them which I wanted see more ..Other than that, I loved these chapters as it adds so much to the story..Much needed chapters surely..
