This is book one of the Shifters at Law series and the main characters are Lara Berkshire and Ronan Casa. The story is set in the shifter town of Bradshaw, Kansas, but Lara isn’t supposed to know about shifters, being one of the only humans in town. She ends up visiting the lawyers of Casa, Fee and Lyon, due to an issue with her neighbour Lester that has been escalating. She has an appointment with Ronan Casa, a wolf shifter and when she sees him, she gets aroused and realises he can smell her, leaving her a bit embarrassed. Her neighbour doesn’t like having a human move in next door to him and has been harassing her every day when she comes back home from her work in a school teaching English. She has tried to complain to the local police, but Lester ending up getting a restraining order against her and is now taking her to court! She hasn’t done anything wrong, but she is the one suffering. Ronan agrees to take her case pro bono, which leaves her in tears from his kindness, after all the stress with her neighbour.
He prides himself on his self-control, something very useful in his role, but that has gone completely out of the window as soon as he met Lara. Their instant attraction to each other is off the charts, but when his workmates come in when he sets her off crying, one asks why he has upset his mate! Everything becomes a little bit too much for Lara and she runs out of the office. Ronan is left wondering if she will accept him as her mate and also what else is happening with her neighbour, as she stays away from him. Matters escalate before the court date and while she calls the police, she also ends up calling Ronan as well. He wants to keep her safe, whether she accepts their mating bond or not. He will always look out for her and love her, no matter what her decision and he tells her this. Lester doesn’t know any of this and takes matters further, leaving both of them in danger. He has a tragic past history with a human neighbour and a massive loss, which has driven his behaviour. Lots of loving and hating, but also a bit of understanding that goes beyond what others expect, especially in the heat of what happens. A lovely short story of a human in a mostly shifter town, finding she is in the minority and may not get justice, but may have found something far more important in life.
