I ‘strayed’ from the usual type of memoir I like to read - I am so glad I did - this book is inspirational (in my humble opinion)… what an achievement - I’ve not been to Morocco but it’s somewhere I’d like to visit and possibly do something similar to this ‘trek’ for charity. The author, Dawne Archer, took herself by her ‘back-brace’ and despite being is agony she did the trek ...... although illness just prior to the trek very nearly stopped her. I enjoyed ‘being along on this journey’ with her and her close friend - just shows you what you can do with determination - and all in aid of Thrombosis UK - good on her I say.

The book synopsis tells us the author is a blood clot survivor who decides to go on a trek in the Sahara Desert to raise money for Thrombosis UK. That, in itself, piqued my interest. But, wow, there is so much more to this memoir.

Gritty in places, highly emotional in others, this is a terrific story excellently told. I love Dawne’s straightforward writing style, adored her descriptions of the desert, and hugely admired her courage and determination. I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending this book and applaud this lady for her bravery and fundraising efforts. Oh, and if she writes a sequel, I’ll be first in line to read it.

I have to take my hat off to Dawne Archer for undertaking this trek across the Sahara to raise money for Thrombosis UK. As a very young woman Dawne suffered a thrombosis which for her was life changing. Sadly, she lost her father to the same condition while he was a relatively young man which gave her the impetus to learn more about this condition and, if possible, to educate others about it.
Fast forward many years and she and her childhood friend decide to undertake a trek though Saharan Morocco to raise money for their chosen charities. I had to admire their courage as it's not something I would ever do!
Unfortunately, just weeks before the trip Dawne suffers a back injury which causes excruciating pain. Undeterred off she goes to Morocco to meet up with her friend and the rest of the trekkers. I loved her descriptions of the desert, the dunes, the black night sky peppered with stars and of course the heat. She tries to focus on the beauty surrounding her to take her mind off her pain. I enjoyed the way she told her story, her sense of determination and her sense of humour, something which is definitely a requirement given the lack certain 'facilities' in the desert! Well done Dawne. You are an inspirational lady.

Dawne Archer is a survivor of both a pulmonary embolism and a DVT. Sadly, her father succumbed to a pulmonary embolism at a relatively young age, and Dawne was faced with survivor's guilt.
Both she and her father were flagged as carriers of Factor V Leiden, which increased their susceptibility to blood clots.
Determined to raise awareness of this hereditary condition, the author decided to embark on a six day fundraising trek in the Moroccan desert. She was joined by her childhood friend.
Although they had trained together in the heat of the Mallorcan sun, neither of them anticipated the challenges they would face, both before and during the trek.
A painful back injury would have deterred many from completing such a challenging walk. However, sheer guts and determination resulted in both an inspiring and transformational journey.
As a carrier of Factor V Leiden, I applaud the author for raising awareness and funding for Thrombosis UK.

When Dawne Archer discovered in her twenties that she had clots and a pulmonary embolism, she promised to make every effort to increase the public’s awareness of the dangers of thrombosis. Then her father died from a clot too and her resolve strengthened.

This memoir is about the author’s decision, with a close friend from her teenage years, to trek across part of the Moroccan Sahara to raise money for Thrombosis UK. It leads the reader through her painful efforts to get fit and her other fund raising ventures to the trek itself. I have to say I admire her immensely, but I also think she was bonkers too...in the best possible way. Without spilling all the beans, Dawne had more than the usual challenges and they were tremendous as it was. She deserves immense kudos for accomplishing her goal.

The book is great fun to read. It romps along and the reader feels that s(he) is there with Dawne and her friend, experiencing every step with them. The descriptions of the desert are lovely and it made me want to do it too. I could see the beautiful sunsets, feel the searing heat and taste the dust. Just wonderful. It is very well written, it’s well edited and has plenty of humorous moments and great natural dialogue. It is also informative about Thrombosis, so really useful as well. I enjoyed it very much and recommend it highly.

Having had a life-threatening health scare at the age of 26 years Dawne sets out to high-light awareness of blood clots and to support Thrombosis UK by going on a fundraising trek through the Sahara Desert. With her childhood friend Sarah, the pair begin training and fundraising the funds to go. This book is well written and takes the reader through the journey Dawne embarks on. However, before they are to set out Dawn experiences a back injury that may put the adventure in jeopardy. Pushing through the pain and with the aid of pain killers and a back brace Dawne doesn't give up but continues on with her plan. The six-day trek takes the reader through the obstacles, the fun, the challenges, the friendship with Sarah and support of others who are also fundraising their causes by doing the trek. An inspiring read and interesting as the trek go through the country of Morocco, so you also read of the people, the landscape and the culture as well as the challenges faced.

A wonderful memoir about a woman determined to complete a trek through the desert in aid of the charity Thrombosis UK, despite suffering herself at the time from a painful back injury. Her stoicism and refusal to give up are truly admirable. Surviving on carefully administered painkillrs and sheer mind over matter, she conveys not only her pain but the companionship within the group, the kindness of the guides and the beauty of the desert. I could truly sympathise at her difficulties in using the latrines and holes when she was in too much pain to bend over, let alone stand up again!
Did she finally complete the trek? For that you need to read this lovely tale of travel and travail.

I am not a massive fan of getting fit or walking great distances but I have a grudging respect for those who do. However, to begin a fund-raising trek with a rather compromised sciatic nerve seems like sheer madness. Add a friend who has a very nasty bout of food poisoning, and walking boots that need industrial tape to function and you have quite an adventure. Well written, the author's pain and discomfort are contrasted with the sheer beauty of the Sahara in all its moods; definitely worth the read.

Dawne Archer is without doubt a very brave and inspiring person and her book, Trekker Girl, Morocco Bound is testament to this.
At the age of 26 Dawne suffered life threatening blood clots which were misdiagnosed by the medical professionals she went to for help.
Her father later tragically died from a similar situation involving blood clots.
Ever since these events Dawne has been on a mission to educate people about blood clots and the behaviour changes we need to adopt in order to protect ourselves against them. She set herself a challenge in her fifties to take part in a trek across the Sahara Desert in order to raise money for the charity Thrombosis UK and this book is the story of her journey. She had to endure terrible pain in her back and leg which came on shortly before the trek and almost derailed her carefully made plans. This lady is made from strong stuff and she wasn’t going to let a little (lot of) agonizing pain ruin everything she had worked so hard for.
Despite the pain she endured with such courage and determination, Dawne was able to enjoy her challenge and take her mind off her pain by taking in the wonderful sights of the dunes and landscape of the Sahara, along with her cherished time spent with her close childhood friend Sarah, who accompanied her on the trek. It must have made for a wonderful experience and it’s retelling has given us a truly inspiring memoir which I recommend highly!

I've given this memoir five stars for several reasons, and I love that the proceeds from sales support a most worthy cause, Thrombosis UK. I very much enjoyed reading this book because it was written in a style that drew me in - it was like me and the author had sat down for a cold beer and she was telling me all about this adventure: the style of writing and language I found very "chatty" and I really liked that. The book is peppered with bits that made me chuckle, not least the way the two friends talk to each other. The reader goes not the adventure and is with Dawne all the way through this memoir, feeling every joy and every difficulty, but it's always a positive read. The book is an uplifting read - a celebration of personal achievement - and at the end, the reader almost feels the raw emotions bursting through as the author unleashes her feelings which she's suppressed somewhat. ....and only after reading the book will the reader discover that the cover is an interesting twist!!

Thank you to author Dawne Archer for a copy of her memoir Trekker Girl - Morroco Bound which I won. Here are my thoughts:

This is an inspiring memoir based on the author's experiences with thrombosis, (and with reference to her father's,) and her life long commitment to fundraising for Thrombosis UK.

Commendable, heart-warming and full of camaraderie and human spirit. Dawne's memoir takes us along with her on her brave trek with fellow trekkers, including her mate Sarah. There are many health obstacles to overcome, added issues such as backache and stomach problems, and mirages!

Read this wonderful memoir to find out more about Dawne's and fellow trekkers determination, and to understand the implications of thrombosis and meet her fellow trekkers.

The memoir also includes some lovely photos.

Highly recommended.

It is absolutely amazing what sheer guts & determination can achieve. Dawne’s wit & courage shine through. What she puts herself through is remarkable. Dawne supports Thrombosis Uk because of her own experience, & the fact that sadly her father died. DVTs & PEs can be deadly. The charity aims to alert people to the dangers. Dawne gives helpful advice in the book. The training & fundraising in her locality of Mallorca is interesting. As is learning about the medical facilities there!
The 6 day trek across the Sahara in Morocco is a feat of endurance. The days are wonderfully described in brilliant detail…the good, the bad & the ugly! This is a truly fascinating & enjoyable read. A page-turner. Highly recommend.

Dawne's writing style and pictures of important highlights of her trip, made this memoir an enjoyable read.
The courage and tenacity of this author is to be commended. She continued her trek across a desert in unbearable temperatures all the while suffering from a compressed disc resting on the femoral nerve. This was all in the name of fundraising for Thrombosis which she had personally experienced and recovered from.
The characters in her party, especially her travelling companion and friend, seemed like enjoyable people to travel with. The camaraderie was evident at the end of their journey as they all came together to celebrate their achievements.
After this great achievement, what will come next in Dawne's life?

This is a well written account of what is involved in taking on a Charity Challenge like walking across the Desert.

The Author takes us through the whole process - her motivation - she is a blood clot survivor and all that entails. Her commitment to raising awareness of thrombosis along with how she raised the funding to participate. Finally, her determination to complete the trek in the face of adversity.

If you are considering doing or, want to know the level of commitment and determination needed to do a charity challenge this is the book for you.

First of all: I must admit - I'm a fan of deserts too, so the book cover really
attracted me. The walking part is something else.

I liked the way the author talked about her life, her illness
and her amazing travel plan. She's very positive!

She wrote honestly and the book read easily as I wanted to continue
reading.

She described her travels detailled. It was chronological and
good structured. And I also did like the photographs and the comments
as well!

I'm really certain now. When we can travel again: Morocco is on
the wish list!

I would recommend Trekker Girl - Morocco Bound to anyone who
loves fair travel memoirs. I like to give with lots of pleasure and support a
5* rating.

I received a free copy via the We love Memoirs group on Facebook.

In her forward, the author talks about survivor guilt – why did she survive thrombosis and not her father? The answer is clear – so that she would be able to write this book to advise others of the complexity of the condition and things that can be done to avoid it. She was diagnosed with blood clots in her twenties. Time spent in hospital to thin her blood and break down the clots left her none the wiser about her condition. When her father succumbed to a pulmonary embolism, she felt helpless and powerless but set about learning all that she could and decided to help raise awareness by taking a trek to Morocco on a fundraising expedition for Thrombosis UK. She experiences the joy of desert life (camels, isolation, starry nights) and the deprivation (getting back to basics for personal needs). The author takes the reader along on her trek, provides a delightful read and raises funds and awareness for a cause close to her heart.

Is it possible to trek through the desert with terrible back and leg pain?

After reading about Dawne Archer’s attempt to do this, I knew I had to read this book. Having been born with two curves in my spine, I’ve known more pain than most. I don’t think I’d ever spend five days hiking in a desert, let alone do it when my back was flaring up with pain, even if it was for charity.

But Dawne’s heart is pure, and she’s committed to raising money for Thrombosis UK. There is never a dull moment in this book. If you want to read more about this author’s hike in the Sahara Desert, where there are sand dunes, dangerous spiders, and scorpion risks, pick up your copy of Trekker Girl Morocco Bound to see if this brave or crazy author makes it out without severe consequences to her health or if she has to be rescued. All proceeds from the book will be donated.

They say that every now and then it's a good idea to get out of your comfort zone and do something you've never done before. Dawne Archer certainly did this, when she and an old school friend decided to sign up for a trek across the Sahara Desert to raise funds for Thrombosis UK. Dawne has Factor V Leiden, which means she is more susceptible to blood clots/ deep vein thrombosis, having inherited the gene from both parents (her father died from a blood clot to the lung). She had already suffered a life-threatening thrombosis in her twenties, but now in her fifties she also has other health issues that made her wonder whether in reality she would be able to complete the trek.
With the health problems Dawne had at the time, I would never have even contemplated such an arduous task, but this lady had true grit and a grim determination not to let down her sponsors (all proceeds of the book's sale go to Thrombosis UK). She and her friend set off with a support team and other more experienced trekkers to discover just what it's like to walk across the shifting sands of the Sahara Desert in broiling heat. Whether or not she completed the trek you will have to find out for yourself, but the writing is such that you can imagine yourself actually there in amongst the heat, sand, scorpions, blisters, and the endless desert vista stretching for mile after sandy mile.
A recommended 5 star read. Kudos to Ms Archer for having the guts to do something as strenuous as this!

A Remarkable Memoir

I read this book when it was first published and remember it had a profound effect on me.

When this second edition was released, with its appealing new cover, I was keen to read it again.

I am so glad I did. Dawne’s is a remarkable memoir.

The first section covers her family background and the impact that thrombosis has had on her family, laying her low at an early age and causing her father’s premature death. We learn about this serious condition and the charity that Dawne fundraises for – Thrombosis UK. There is also a lot of interesting detail about her earlier years, how she meets up with her schoolfriend Sarah after 25 years and the plans they make for their trek.

Despite multiple setbacks, Dawne perseveres with exceptional stoicism and soon she is flying out to start the arduous expedition across the dunes and through the hostile desert environment of the Sahara.

Immersed in the story, it seemed like I was on that trek with her, feeling the pain she was suffering. Dawne’s powers of endurance shone through, and I loved her descriptions of the journey. We learn about the camaraderie she builds with her fellow trekkers, guides, and locals, as well as the remote regions they travel through. Her experiences are a delight to read, and the photos give further insight.

Thank you for sharing your story, Dawne. It is so inspiring, and you are an example to us all.

Whether you say “I can,” or “I can’t!” You will be right.

A lesser person might have decided against a gruelling trek through the Sahara Desert to raise money and awareness for a cause so close to home that it claimed her father’s life, and almost her own.

Not only that, her training and preparations were dogged with the sort of setbacks and injuries that would have made Bear Grylls contemplate holding a coffee morning instead.

Suffering excruciating pain, there would have been no shame in giving in. Yet with grit, determination and the camaraderie of a group all determined to succeed for their own personal reasons, this middle-aged lady, as she describes herself, battles through. She is an inspiration to us all.

Besides being a splendid desert adventure, with beautiful descriptions of dunes, oases, Bedoin and camels, this book is also educational. The author’s passion for educating people to the danger of Thrombosis shines through. I had no idea that 1 in 4 people die from causes related to blood clots.

And, if a tremendous read is not enough of a reward, all profits from the book go to the charity Thrombosis UK.

Well done, Dawne. I am filled with admiration for what you have achieved.

I won a copy of this book in a competition, but am voluntarily leaving an honest, unbiased review.

First and foremost this book demonstrates what your body can do when you put your mind to it. And it's always good to bring a friend along for a walk.

Early in her 2nd decade Dawne Archer is diagnosed with blood clots and a Pulmonary Embolism.
Here her story begins. Dawn vows to educate the public on the signs and dangers of Thrombosis. In part, this is the reason for the author's decision to trek across the Morracan Sahara Desert in order to raise money for the Thrombosis UK Organization. When the final decision is made and a long time friend agrees to go with her, training begins. Also they begin working towards getting donations to fund the trip....this too is not easy work but people were very supportive toward their mission. Dawne ends up with a back injury...rest, physical therapy and medication along with physicians "go ahead" allows her to carry on.
Each day of the Morracan trek is perfectly described to the reader. It is as if you are dealing with the heat. seeing the beautiful sand dunes, and using the questionable toilet situations with her. There is humor lots of camaraderie, frustrations, support medically , physically and emotionally and strength getting through the day's trek. I enjoyed the experience very much. The author has big kudos from me for completing the trek.

Dawne certainly went out of her comfort zone when she set herself the tack of trekking with her friend across the Sahara Desert. Being a blood clot survivor would cause enough health complications on their own but then to suffer with a month of setbacks due to unforeseen health problems, wow.

In the beginning I did not hold out much hope for the completion of her task...little did I know of her steely nature and determination...failure was not an option, at least not in Dawne´s eyes. She especially did not want to let her sponsors down so off she went. The 1st leg of her trip was to be completed on her own, meeting up with her life long friend and other trekkers.

I found this highly emotional in places but also got to know a bit about this plucky lady. Trekking across the Sahara desert in punishing heat, facing uphill and downhill struggles...well I will say Dawne you are one gutsy lady.

All proceeds from the sale of this book go to Thrombosis UK, to discover if she competed her task I am afraid you will have to but the book to find out. I will say that it is a book well worth reading.

Thank you Dawne x

In Dawne Archer’s Trekker Girl Morocco Bound, Dawne and her childhood friend, Sarah plan to meet in Morocco for a fundraising trek across part of the Sahara Desert. They reconnected after a 20-year hiatus and joined others in the trekking party who are walking for different charities. Right before the trip and after daily practices, Dawne experienced some serious back pain from a slipped disc. At points, she wondered if she could go through with it, but with the encouragement of doctors and pain killers, she made the trip to Morocco to trek for her charity, Thrombosis UK, in memory of her late father.

At times, she and both Sarah asked what they had gotten themselves into, but through illnesses and weariness, they make it through the five-day walk-through sand dunes. They were assisted by experienced guides, had medics on hand while the Berbers helped them through the terrain. They saw camels, a watering hole in the desert and visited a lively Moroccan market just to name a few of their adventures. At the end of the journey the traveling party celebrated before all returned to their respective homes. A great read of brave and determined souls!

Trekker Girl Morocco Bound by Dawne Archer is nothing short of an epic voyage. The first part of this memoir expertly and tenderly lays down a foundation that shows the reader why this trek is no ordinary travel memoir. The familial background provides the depth of why this story -- and others like them -- are so important, even necessary. Life is fragile, and yet we can still strive to embrace it and live each and every moment as if ... as if life isn't also fleeting and fickle.

The author's father dies at a young age and then she herself is diagnosed with the very same condition that claimed him. Despite the guilt, her own diagnosis, and the added layer of chronic pain, Dawne Archer not only endures her six-day journey across the Sahara, she triumphs at living life on her terms.

This is the kind of story that speaks to me: inspiring and so very rewarding. Read this memoir of persistence, resiliency, determination, and unexpected humor. The proceeds from this book support Thrombosis UK.

Two friends not in the best of health set off on an organised fund-raising trek in an inhospitable desert. Brave? Foolhardy? Yes. It might have sounded like a good idea in the planning stages, in a comfortable home in Europe, but as they candidly admit themselves, nothing prepares you for the heat, dust, and basic conditions you’ll encounter walking across a developing country.

What makes Trekker Girl different is that it’s personal. Diagnosed with a life-threatening condition at twenty-six, Dawne hasn’t let her health challenges define her. The journey becomes more than just a physical challenge—it’s about raising awareness of thrombosis and blood clots.

As readers ponder whether they could endure what the intrepid duo did (and this one couldn’t), the author reminds us that her journey isn’t only about physical stamina, but what you can achieve when you’re determined to make a difference.

Trekker Girl is a celebration of life, a defiance against adversity and required reading for anyone setting out on a fund-raising adventure.

Most people who recover from a life-threatening condition are grateful. To her credit, Dawn Archer went many, many steps further– she undertook a gruelling trek in the Sahara Desert to raise funds for the charity that does so much for thrombosis victims, Thrombosis UK.

From a comfortable life in Mallorca, she and a lifelong schoolfriend undertake a circular walk from and back to the Moroccan oasis of Ouarzazate, known as the gateway to the Sahara Desert. Their experience covers everything one might expect from a wilderness expedition in the company of a score of other adventurers prepared for hardships – blistering sun, miles of sand dunes, welcome oases, mysterious Kasbahs, and local people as curious about these middle-aged trekkers as the trekkers are about them.

Dawne Archer deserves both our respect for fundraising in a personally challenging manner to benefit a charitable organization and our appreciation for writing about her Sahara experience with such frankness.

This was a fascinating read. The author describes her own experiences with life-threatening blood clots, and the events that led her to eventually reconnect with an old school friend and do a walk across the Sahara Desert for charity.

I was enthralled throughout, as she talked about her struggles to get fit for the walk, and a disaster happening in the final month before the walk was to take place. I have nothing but admiration for the way she dealt with every crisis, and her determination to complete the walk despite her problems was incredible, to say the least.

There were some hilarious moments, and some painful ones, and the author is frank about her emotions during the whole experience. I felt as though I was with her every step of the way, wincing, laughing, cheering her on.

An emotional read, with essential advice about blood clots and deep vein thrombosis, and all proceeds going to Thrombosis UK. Highly recommend.
