If you love Sophie Kinsella and Emily Giffin, you'll love this heartwarming sequel to One S'more Summer from a fresh voice in contemporary chick-lit that offers a lighthearted and fun take on life, love, and how to move forward without looking back.
Four years after her life-changing summer, Gigi Goldstein thinks saying goodbye to Camp Chinooka means saying hello to a brand new life. Now faced with a second chance at her career, she is filled with more hope than she's felt in a long time. Her design house, G. Malone is taking the fashion world by storm, even attracting notice of Victoria Ellicott, the fashionable British socialite who just happens to be engaged to the future king of England. When Gigi is chosen to design the royal wedding dress, she is forced to confront her ex-fiancé, Perry Gillman, now a successful composer with a hit show on the West End.
But when Gigi learns Perry's been dating Victoria's sister Annabelle, who rivals her in looks, style and sophistication, Gigi can't help but feel inadequate in everything. Her world begins to crumble as she develops a creative block so debilitating, she fears that a wedding dress of royal proportions is never going to happen. Even a budding relationship with the handsome, worldly, and charismatic Viscount Satterley can't make her forget about Perry and her inability to get over him. As the world gears up for the wedding of the century, Gigi is on the brink of buckling under the immense pressure of the uncertainties of her future and failures of her past.
Will she be able overcome her creative paralysis to design the dress of Victoria's dreams, or will she break down now that she has even s'more to lose?
The Campfire Series 1. One S'more Summer 2. S'more to Lose
Beth is a native New Yorker who loves rom-coms, Broadway, and a good maxi dress. She was introduced to her husband through a friend she met at sleepaway camp and considers the eight summers she spent there to be the most formative of her life. One S’more Summer is Beth's debut novel.
Okay, I really did enjoy the first book, One S'more Summer. But let me say that I devoured this book in only one day! I picked this up on a break at work on Thursday, continued reading during my lunch break, and then couldn't stop reading, had to finish before bed! It was a little easier to get into now that I know Gigi better and am past how she started off in the first book. One thing that always makes me crazy when I'm reading, but in a good way, is knowing something happened, but not knowing exactly what, and being kept wondering for quite some time. Another author who does that quite well is Samantha Young. Anyway, I had fallen in love with Perry by the end of the first book, so I was so sad that they were not together at the beginning of this one. And while I wanted to have them back together, since I wasn't sure at first what broke them up, I soon grew to love her new love interest, Gideon, and was totally rooting for him. Until, well, until he did his not listening thing and shutting her out, for the 2nd time. At that point I was a little irritated with him, and kind of rooting for Gigi and Perry to figure it out. The book ends with a bit of a cliffhanger, and definitely some bad news for Gigi and her fashion company. Definitely now I don't know how I can wait until book 3, to see if Gideon really will be the right guy, or if in the end, she will get back with Perry.
Once again I loved her best friend, Jamie, he is so funny. I was in shock that he didn't already adore Downton Abbey, but laughed at all the times he called it "Downtown Abbey" at first. I love that the show revolves around a musical written about Queen Elizabeth that is reminiscent of the current hit Hamilton. I would watch it too! I look forward to seeing how it goes once Elizabeth hits Broadway in book 3, and finding out where our couple's romance may or may not go.
I've now ordered a physical copy for myself of book 1, and will definitely be ordering a physical copy of book 2 when I get the money as well.
Set four years after the first book finished and we learn that unfortunately the romance between Perry and Gigi has ended and things seemed so positive for them. It looks like their careers got in the way of their lives as Gigi and Jamie created their fashion line and is currently in the bid to win the Princess's Wedding dresses. Perry is a big star on Broadway now, and in London, like his play, Elizabeth 1 has taken the world of theatre by storm. Gigi has avoided everything to do with Perry and never thought their lives would ever cross paths but seems Perry's new love interest is the sister of the current Princess. Gigi has captured the attention of another royal in the form of Viscount Slattery aka Gideon. What will happen though when she and Perry start to spend time together? Will their emotions and chemistry start sizzling for one another making both their current relationships sit on rocky ground? Once again we find Gigi losing her mind and running back to her one safe space in the world - Camp Chinooka. Will this help her find herself and her inspiration? I have to admit I didn't like the ending of this book as the tables turned and Gigi was made to look like the bad person and none of her friends especially Jamie came to her side. I was very disappointed in Jamie as I thought that he would stand by her side as she knew about Perry and their history together. After the way this particular one ended, I am in two minds about starting number three when it is released.
(edited to change rating from 4 stars to 5 stars. I figured after rereading this book twice since I first read it a week ago that it was due the 5 stars!)
"Gershwin, Gigi, always Gershwin."
I have been pleasantly surprised with how much I’ve enjoyed this series. The writing is fantastic, the plot is interesting without being overdone, the characters are realistically flawed. I really enjoyed the first book and getting to know the characters and was anticipating the release of the second book. It did not disappoint and I read it all in one sitting.
While I really enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it to others to read, I’ll never understand why authors spend one book making you fall in love with a character (or a relationship between two characters), and the next book convincing you how wrong they are for each other and how perfect a new character is for the relationship. In my opinion, Gideon is way too perfect and way too understanding for fiery Gigi. Their relationship is vanilla while Gigi and Perry have a chocolate, chili relationship. Gigi and Perry are spicy and passionate, and I really, really hope that they can work things out in the third book. I know that she’s grown and progressed through the years, but I’m having a hard time reconciling the Gigi that cracks under pressure, eats in the basement of a restaurant in Chinatown, and passes out in Rosie’s with “Countess Georgica,” who will live out her days at Bagdley Hall. I was so drawn to how Gigi always had to locate Perry as soon as she entered a room, and how Perry continually slipped away to have a conversation whenever they were in the same place. No matter how many times Gigi tried to convince herself that their relationship was over "a long time ago," I wasn't convinced! I’ll be waiting, not so patiently, for book 3 to come out and wrap up this intriguing story.
Another American who CBA to do the tiniest bit of research. Lazy. A London hotel with only a dozen tv channels? A woman who is going to be the ‘future queen of England’ who is, apparently, marrying the Prince of England ?? Rolls eyes here.
First person past tense, the usual I, I, I, I.... Me me me ..... I’ve read better fan fiction.
It's filled with mundane details. There are no steamy scenes. It's like a bowl of Wheaties when you wanted Count Chocula. Then the heroine is utterly foolish and makes bad choices. Why must authors make their heroines so stupid?
This was a case where the second book in the series was better than the first. The title, S’MORE TO LOSE, is the perfect way to describe how the stakes are higher this time around for Gigi and Perry. Set four years after ONE S’MORE SUMMER, book two finds Gigi and Perry established in their respective careers, but apart. It takes at least half the book for the reader to fully understand what happened between them that set their relationship into a death spiral even as Perry’s musical about Elizabeth I takes the world by storm at the same time that Gigi and Jamie’s new label, G. Malone, is getting the kind of recognition they both dreamed of.
With G. Malone in the running to design the wedding gown for the bride of the next king of England, the spotlight couldn’t be brighter. But when she runs into Perry in London, old feelings and insecurities coming racing back, leaving her no choice but to return to Camp Chinooka to get her groove back. Gigi grows as an individual and as designer in the one place that never ceases to inspire her creativity. But nothing is ever that easy, and Perry’s new love interest could ruin everything for Gigi and Jamie, just as Gigi is finally moving on with Gideon, the charming Viscount of Slatterley.
Plot I felt like this story moved faster due to the backstory being told in book 1. There were a lot of unexpected twists and turns that made this one much more fun for me to read. I was heartbroken at first to find that Gigi and Perry had broken up, but Gideon grew on me from nearly the beginning. There’s a lot of excitement surrounding a royal wedding, and I felt much more drawn into the world of fashion this time around. I could almost see the pieces in my head, the author’s descriptions were so vivid.
Characters I loved seeing Gigi’s growth in this book and not repeating the mistakes of her past. But that doesn’t mean she doesn’t make new mistakes, because she does, and they come back to bite her in the arse big time. New characters, like the bride-to-be, Victoria, and her sister, Annabelle, and Gideon are welcome additions to the cast.
What I Loved About S’MORE TO LOSE 1. Fashion Design. While I love looking at beautiful clothes, the whole couture thing has never been something I was interested in. Until now. I loved all the description of the gowns, the clothes, the fabrics, the details.
2. Character Development. Seeing how Gigi has grown since the first book was one of my favorite parts about the sequel. Something many books in a series fall flat on.
3. London. I’ve only been to London once, but I felt as if I was back there again through the author’s descriptions.
4. Camp Chinooka. A nice way to circle back to the s’more theme of the series.
5. Ending. Another perfect happy-for-now ending with the promise of more to come in book three.
Bottom Line A fun, flirty, heartwarming romance with all the elements of a page-turner.
Disclaimer I was provided with a copy of the book by the author in exchange for an honest review.
This book ended up on my Kindle account for free somehow. I don't remember getting it, but I was getting ready to take a camping trip and thought it seemed like a fitting book. I didn't realize it was about people who used to go to a camp. This whole book is set between London and NYC, minus a few pages at the mythical Camp Chinooka. (And I confess sleepaway camps are forever ruined by my personal experience the summer after 3rd grade.) But all that aside - it was actually an entertaining, short read.
The story centers around Georgica "Gigi" Goldstein, a sometimes likable fashion designer who gets the contract of the century with her business partner - to design the wedding dress for the future Queen of England. (This book borrows a lot of themes from real life. Victoria, the future Queen, for instance, is clearly modeled on Kate Middleton, although she and her husband are given the Duke and Duchess of Sussex title.) Through the process, Gigi meets some random British hottie named Gideon, who also happens to be a viscount. But she is also still sorta (or not?) in love with her ex-fiance, Perry Gillman, who happens to be the toast of the town for creating the new It musical, "Elizabeth." (Think "Hamilton" for the Brits. Remember that borrowing of themes?)
While the story borders on trite and is rather predictable, the characters are actually charming and drive the story along. I think more of it would have made more sense/mattered more if I had read the first book (the one actually at Camp Chinooka), but this was a sweet breezy summer read. I would do 3.5 stars, but since GR doesn't, here's 4.
From the ache in my heart that it evoked reminding me of something in my past, to the happiness I felt that reminded me of my present and possibly future, this book was the perfect mixture of fairytale and reality.
I liked Beth Merlin's "S'more to Lose" even better than the first book in the Campfire series. Main character Gigi seemed so much more confident in herself and her abilities this time around, despite the brief crisis and case of designer's block that sent her back to visit Camp Chinooka one more time in the middle of the book. Rather than running away from her problems, she seemed to be running towards inspiration, which showed just how far her character has come since the beginning of book #1.
As for Gigi's romantic prospects, I have to admit that I wasn't super excited about Gideon, Viscount Satterley, as her prospective love interest. He seemed like a nice enough guy, but overall, Perry, her love interest from the first book, seemed like a better match for her. Perry challenged Gigi and seemed to bring her out of herself, which in turn helped her to find her inspiration. I can't help but hope Gigi and Perry will find a way to reconcile in book #3.
Overall, I loved this book. It stands very well on its own for those who have not yet read the first book in the Campfire series, though I recommend that book too. I can't wait to see what happens in book #3!
*Review copy provided by the publisher. All opinions expressed are my own.
I have not read the first book in the series but Beth does a good job of subtly filling in the background. I liked that the book was not just about the two llove relationships. There was good character building of all the players and the event thst pulled them together. Getting the next book now!
To be honest, I was rather hesitant to start this book particularly after the ending of book 1 (which seems perfect actually) because I've grown to love Perry and Gigi, and I couldn't bear the thought of them not being together. Of course, curiosity lured me in - I couldn't resist returning to the warmth of Camp Chinooka!
What I did not expect was to fall completely in love with the series for the second time, and even though it ended with a cliffhanger that left you pulling out your hair (at least it was to me), I wouldn't trade those hours reading into the night for anything else.
I was legitly torn between Perry and Gideon, and I typically avoid romance with two love interests, but somehow Beth's works are like a charm that enchant me to keep on reading this series. However...shhh...because I fell in love with Perry first, I'm still rooting for their HEA.
I can't wait for book 3!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book generously provided by Xpresso Book Tours and the author. Thank you so much for the reviewing opportunity!
Nothing objectionable, which I'm okay with. No real surprises. I would have liked less Perry and more Gideon interactions. This book just needed a little something more.
Because I hadn't read the first book, this felt like walking in on the middle of a conversation. You can follow along and eventually catch up with most of the important points, but no matter how carefully you listen there will always be things that you never 'get'. There were constant references to the events in One S'More Summer. For that reason, I wouldn't recommend reading this until you've read the first book. Now, on to the review.
What I liked:
The book was really well written. I can't say that enough.
Some of the characters were hilarious. Gigi's mother? Made me laugh out loud. One of many memorable scenes was the one where she clinked on the glass as if she were at a wedding, trying to get them to kiss and had to be dragged inside by the sister.
What I didn't like as much:
*MILD SPOILER* There's no real HEA. Not even a HFN, really. It's more of a cliffhanger. As in, Gigi's with Gideon (who I was rooting for, personally), but it seemed sort of up in the air whether she was REALLY going to end up with him in Book 3.
Which brings me to my next point. I thought it was crap that she spent most of the book obsessing about Perry. Who, let's remember, moved to London while they were engaged and she never heard from again.
In fact, Gigi seemed to be emotionally flighty in general. First, her One True Love was Joshua. But wait, no, apparently that was just a crush. Then it was Perry, over whom she obsessed for all of Book 2. Then she decided to date the very sweet Gideon, insisting that it absolutely wasn't a rebound. And now we're waiting to see how that turns out.
So, in short, the writing was top notch. In fact, I was up until 4:30 a.m. finishing this. I found Gigi a little annoying sometimes. But her mother was hilarious, as were Gigi's comments to her about "you just want designer grandchildren." And you may want to start with the first book so you haven't missed out on anything.
I'm so excited to be reviewing this book today! I loved it.
This one is even better than the first book. The characters are more developed and have a of history together. I'm also a little biased because I love everything British, so this story was perfect for me!
The beginning is unexpected since usually in the sequel to a romance, the main couple has gotten together. Though Gigi and Perry were together at the end of One S'more Summer, they have broken up now. I liked this unconventional way to begin a sequel.
I loved the way that the things that have happened in the last four years were told gradually. Everything, including Gigi and Perry's breakup, was woven into conversations so it didn't break up the narrative. This was a great way to fill us in on what's happened in their lives without delaying the story.
I also liked the way things were like real life but slightly different. They talk about Top Designer a lot, which is just like Project Runway. Also Victoria and Prince Alexander are very much like Prince William and Kate. But there was some real pop culture in the story, because Gigi loves Downton Abbey. These little additions were so funny throughout the story.
I loved this story! I can't wait to see where the story goes in the third book.
I received a copy of this book from Xpresso Book Tours.
This book has been sitting on my kindle for a little while, now, so I thought it would be a good time to read it. I was unaware, when buying, that it was the second in a series. Now, usually, I want to read books in order, but I let that go. Now, after reading the book, I think I will, at some point go back to book one, and then read the subsequent two, as I thoroughly enjoyed the story. Gigi is one half of the G Malone design duo that is about to take the world by storm, having been asked to design the wedding dress for the future Queen of England. Unbeknown to her, tangled within the 'nearly' Royal family that she is working with, is her ex-fiancé, who is in a relationship with the sister of the bride to be. What a mess. Her feelings for him, are still not fully resolved, as they never had proper closure, and, to top it off, shes got a Viscount falling for her, too! So much angst and torment! Will she get the dress, and the wedding wardrobe designed, with her partner, Jamie? Will she succumb to the charms of the man she was in love with for four years? Or, will she end up becoming a part of the British aristocracy, herself? I had great fun, reading, and as I mentioned, I think I will have to invest in the rest of these!
I received a ebook copy from netgalley in exchange for an honest review
This is the second book of the Campfire series It starts with Gigi or Georgica and Jamie meeting Victoria the future queen to discuss on her wedding gown, as G Malone, their design house is one of choices. Then they realize that Victoria has chosen to design not only her wedding gown, but her other dresses leading to the wedding. They are ecstatic. Gigi is afraid of meeting of meeting her ex, Perry, whose has become a celebrity with his play Elizabeth I. Meeting Perry's new lover Annabelle doesn't help in increasing Gigi's confidence.
Will Gigi be able to design the perfect wedding dress? Or will she lose it all like in the Top Designer finale? Will Perry and Gigi get back together? Read to find out
A cute romantic story. Since I didn't read the first book, did feel a little left out. But there is some backstory so it was kind of easy to get into the book. I would recommend the readers to read the first one before reading. Recommended for romance and chick lit readers
S'more to Lose is the follow up instalment to One S'more Summer. Four years have passed since that summer at Camp Chinooka. Gigi was in a relationship with Perry but they haha since split up.
Gigi's label G.Malone was in the running to design the wedding dress of the century for the future queen of England and that's where her path crossed once again with Perry. Gigi found it really difficult to bump into Perry all the time while maintaining her professionalism and she suffered a design block.
At the same time Gigi met someone new, but she's not sure if she's really over Perry or whether it was just a rebound.
I really enjoyed the scenes where the various dresses were designed and getting an insight into the many stages of the wedding of the century. I'll definitely continue reading the rest of this series by Beth Merlin.
(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book)
I realize this is the middle of a three book series. While the romantic aspect is interesting, I'm actually English and a fashion designer, designing for the royal family? I don't think there is a royal family in the world where the royals themselves don't wear clothes designed in that country by a designer of that country, think all the British royal weddings, Princess Mary in Denmark and so forth. Part of the job of being royal is to promote the goods of their country. So the story would have been more successful had the person commissioning the designs been a celebrity, Kate Winslet or any other high profile British celebrity, singer, actor whatever, they, unlike royalty, don't HAVE to promote British products. Aside from that, the musician ex seemed like a serial non-commitment type, so watching him behave similarly with his current and very high profile partner should have been enough of an enlightening moment to put anyone off. It makes the hero of the story seem a bit dumb.
Thanks to NetGalley and Ink Monster for the opportunity to read and review S'more to Lose by Beth Merlin! Four years after the first book, this sequel finds Gigi and Perry in London and at an impasse in their relationship. They have moved on from their relationship, by all appearances. Perry is famous for writing a popular musical and Gigi and Jamie have built a growing, productive designer business, G-Malone. Prince Alexander and Victoria Ellicott are planning their wedding and want G-Malone to design the wedding dress and wedding attire for the upcoming royal wedding celebration. Gigi meets Gideon and they gradually fall for each other and all is well until paparazzi create a gossip story under false pretenses and blow everything out of the water. Tumultuous and romantic with the added bonus of artistic creativity build into a very enjoyable story; 5 stars!
Although this book is the sequel to One S'More Summer, there is a huge gap between the end of that and the start of this. And it is a bit of a disconnect to be honest, until you get back into the swing of things.
And then the book turns into a bit of a tease as the past 4 years of her relationship (or not) are revealed in increments. Add to that the hoopla with the dress, the Viscount and that ending, and you have a significantly more drama laden story than before.
Overall, this is a more complex story than the first book with more detailing around the emotional relationships.
I'm intrigued to see where the author will go with book 3.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
What is the point in the first book if she ends up with someone else in the book? I don’t like to get invested in characters then have then have a whole new character in the second book.
Also, I just don’t get how Perry changed so much and started talking to Annabelle before breaking it off with Gigi. That doesn’t seem like him at all. The idea that the character would change so drastically is horrible.
I did enjoy the story, but to be honest, I kept waiting for her and Perry to get together...
Also, this book desperately needs to be edited. There would be sentences with words missing and it would be confusing to figure out.
I would rate this book a 3.5 because I did genuinely want to know how it ended and will read the next one.

While I didn’t read the first book, I was still able to enjoy this one. I would put it down to try and focus on something else only to find myself going right back to read more. I can’t say how much I loved this story enough. The characters were all so lovable and so funny. Gigi’s mom was my absolute favorite, I couldn’t help but laugh while reading about her. Since I haven’t read book one I’m going to go read it so I can better understand this “S’more To Lose” and I’m sure that I’m only going to love it more. And you don’t have to wonder if I’m super pumped to read the next one “Love you S’more” because I am!
This book hardly had any romance. Yet it's supposed to be a romance. The main character dates a guy for like 6 months and all we get is, a sentence saying "We went out and I started to like him more." Not an exact quote, but that's it. And then we are supposed to really care that said-guy proposes at the end of the book. There is no real connection. It was all about the dress and the main character's stresses. And the guy that we learned to care about from the first book is made to look like a jerk. If I could have just gotten to know this guy (I can't even remember his name now) that proposes better, I would have been happier.

Well, this book is a really easy read. I didn’t expect to finish it so quickly, especially since the first half of the book I was all, “really? Georgia, have you not grown as an individual in the four years that have passed since the first book? Do I really need to read about your crippling, self-inflicted insecurities? Maybe instead of running away from your problems or drinking alcohol, you should invest in some therapy.l
But then, the book improved. Girlfriend got a backbone. She was almost always professional, and she was always honest with her latest love interest. What I didn’t care for was the ending, which was Perry’s doing and yet somehow it’s the woman’s fault?
The second in this "Campfire Series" had moments of unexplained and "neat" segues with a predictable ending. I did not enjoy this second of the three in the series as much as the first, mostly because Gigi, the protagonist, just irritated me. Her immature and emotionally stunted behavior did not square with the magnitude of her creative talent and professional success. Jamie, her best friend, and most honest supporter, had repeatedly warned her of the potential consequences of keeping the secret of her and Perry's past from Victoria and Annabelle, so it is no surprise, at the end, that he refuses to take her call. Of course, I have to read the third book of the series and hope that she is redeemed, but believe that she will not be the only character given a second chance.
Honestly, after several intense books in a row, I was just ready to read something lighthearted and unchallenging.
What I actually got, was a rollercoaster of drama, romance and fashion intrigue, wrapped up with a huge slice of England and all the things I love about Gloucestershire.
This was a wonderful breath of fresh air and just what I needed. I would happiliy recommend this story to anyone who wants to curl up with a cup of hot Earl Gray tea, needs a book to read on a trip, or wants something fun and different to break up more weighty tomes. You won't be disappointed!
This is a really enjoyable book. It was cozy, never dull and a very fast read. The only issue for me was that I haven't read the first book which made certain parts of the book a little bit confusing.
Can someone please explain to me why the majority of her friends turn their backs on Gigi after the Perry incident at the end of the book? As their friends shouldn't they at least give her the benefit of a doubt? I get that they are hurt and so on... but so is Gigi? In addition to the lack of support from her friends, she has to deal with the media. I'm so angry at her so-called friends and so sorry for her. Sorry, for the rant... I just had to get it out.
