Batteries in a Portable World: A Handbook on Rechargeable Batteries for Non-Engineers, Fourth Edition

Rate this book
Batteries receive much media attention, but they lag behind other technologies. These limitations become apparent when advancing the battery from portable uses to wheeled mobility that demands strenuous conformities and long service under harsh conditions. Incremental improvements are being made and the fourth edition Batteries in a Portable World elaborates on these developments. This bestseller handbook on batteries provides a basic understanding of their strength and limitations. If helps the busy professional who needs a crash course on batteries; the engineer who searches for a battery to launch a new product; the student who seeks answers for an academic project; and the everyday battery user who wants to get the most out of each battery. The book is easy to read and makes minimal use of technical jargons. The focus is on practical applications and steps towards perfection.

I read both the first and fourth edition. The first is mercifully short, fourth takes you up to date past the lithium revolution. Haven't read intermediate editions.

I don't know of a better primer. Start with his articles on batteryuniversity.com to get a feel for the concise, friendly, helpful style.

The publisher, CADEX, out of Vancouver, is the author's own company. He designed and sold battery charging stations since the 90's. The book does have some marketing flavor but certainly not annoying. I would rather be marketed to via a world-class tutorial than any other means.

He is not a chemist.

As someone who dabbles in batteries and looking to incorporate different types ( Ni Cad, AGM, Lead Acid etc) into my energy centered venture this publication while I do not want to go so far as to say invaluable, going forward it will be and has been very useful to me. Another feature that is very relavant is that it is up to date and current in an industry that is exploding with change and new technologies.
